Success in Partnering MCM Construction / Caltrans District 4 San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge East Span Seismic Safety Project Oakland Touchdown Phase 1 (OTD1)
Prior to the start of construction, MCM and Caltrans sat down and talked about the project goals.  Because of the high profile and highly visibility nature of the project, it would be necessary to work together to understand the emerging environmental philosophy that is shaping today's construction. The Oakland Touchdown contract fit into an overall schedule that required that the project be completed within a designated time frame.  Schedule was to be a top priority.   Technical challenges with respect to the seismic features of the bridge.  (Looks good on paper, but how do you build it?)       Pre-Construction Project Elements
Environmental Excellence Cooperation on technical aspects of construction (i.e. Hinge Pipe Beams) Outstanding Safety Record Project Partnering Highlights
Environmental Solutions The OTD project is located adjacent to a large ESA, a major concern for the environmental agencies.  The contract permits allowed for open water dredging which would be a major source for unwanted turbidity in the ESA.
Environmental Solutions (Cont.) The Caltrans Design Team envisioned access dredging followed by dredging the footings and then installing cofferdams to complete the work. In an effort to drastically reduce the environmental impacts, MCM installed a land based access trestle and cofferdams, prior to dredging, so that sediments and turbidity were contained within the cofferdam.   Caltrans took it a step further and covered the work trestle with plywood and filter fabric to prevent any excavated material from entering the bay during the haul off.
Hinge Pipe Beam Installation  Hinge pipe beams are one of the seismic design features that we don’t normally see in every day bridge building.  Installation tolerances of these pipe beams are very tight…. As were the cells that access the beams.
Hinge Pipe Beam Installation MCM and Caltrans Engineers worked together to determine the most effective method for installing these heavy pipes. Old school engineers using old school methods taught us new guys a few things about geometry control without the use of sophisticated equipment.
Safety With the proper planning and personnel, the project completed with an outstanding safety record.  Less the 2% accident rate.  OCIP Safety inspections, Caltrans Safety, MCM Safety and RJC & Associates all played a role in creating a safety culture on the project.

MCM / Caltrans Partnering Showcase - AGC Spring Conference 2011

  • 1. Success in Partnering MCM Construction / Caltrans District 4 San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge East Span Seismic Safety Project Oakland Touchdown Phase 1 (OTD1)
  • 2. Prior to the start of construction, MCM and Caltrans sat down and talked about the project goals. Because of the high profile and highly visibility nature of the project, it would be necessary to work together to understand the emerging environmental philosophy that is shaping today's construction. The Oakland Touchdown contract fit into an overall schedule that required that the project be completed within a designated time frame. Schedule was to be a top priority. Technical challenges with respect to the seismic features of the bridge. (Looks good on paper, but how do you build it?) Pre-Construction Project Elements
  • 3. Environmental Excellence Cooperation on technical aspects of construction (i.e. Hinge Pipe Beams) Outstanding Safety Record Project Partnering Highlights
  • 4. Environmental Solutions The OTD project is located adjacent to a large ESA, a major concern for the environmental agencies. The contract permits allowed for open water dredging which would be a major source for unwanted turbidity in the ESA.
  • 5. Environmental Solutions (Cont.) The Caltrans Design Team envisioned access dredging followed by dredging the footings and then installing cofferdams to complete the work. In an effort to drastically reduce the environmental impacts, MCM installed a land based access trestle and cofferdams, prior to dredging, so that sediments and turbidity were contained within the cofferdam. Caltrans took it a step further and covered the work trestle with plywood and filter fabric to prevent any excavated material from entering the bay during the haul off.
  • 6. Hinge Pipe Beam Installation Hinge pipe beams are one of the seismic design features that we don’t normally see in every day bridge building. Installation tolerances of these pipe beams are very tight…. As were the cells that access the beams.
  • 7. Hinge Pipe Beam Installation MCM and Caltrans Engineers worked together to determine the most effective method for installing these heavy pipes. Old school engineers using old school methods taught us new guys a few things about geometry control without the use of sophisticated equipment.
  • 8. Safety With the proper planning and personnel, the project completed with an outstanding safety record. Less the 2% accident rate. OCIP Safety inspections, Caltrans Safety, MCM Safety and RJC & Associates all played a role in creating a safety culture on the project.
