3. INTRODUCTION TO MARITIME STUDIES
Maritime is connected with the sea, especially in relation to seafaring,
commercial or military activity.
You cannot talk of Maritime without mentioning also the sea in relation
to navigation, shipping etc
Maritime Studies highlights the social and cultural side of the human /
water relationship, but recognizes and explores the links between
human activities, the composition flora and fauna in relation to the
condition of the coastal and marine environments
Aim of Maritime Education and Training anywhere in the world is to
produce qualified specialist maritime personnel to serve the maritime
community locally and internationally.
4. with such specialists, international maritime conventions can be
implemented for the benefit of the whole global community.
Maritime education and training began in Nigeria with the
establishment of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, MAN, Oron in
1979.
Originally called the Nautical College of Nigeria, it was set up to
educate and train shipboard officers, ratings and shore-based
management personnel.

7. LEVEL OF MARITIME STUDIES IN NIGERIA
Over three decades of intensive and consistent maritime
education and training at MAN, the Nigerian maritime industry
still faces the problem of poor staffing and acute shortage of
skilled manpower.
Until 2013 when NIMASA came into establishment of four (4);
1. Niger Delta University, Amasoma, Delta state
2. University of Lagos, Lagos state
3. University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu state
4. IBB University Lapai, Niger State
8. CHALLENGES IN MARITIME STUDIES
Lack of adequate resources and funding.
To be a trained personnel or achieve the minimum knowledge and
competency/standards required by STCW ’95, qualified maritime lecturers are
not available.
maritime education is being isolated from other academic education.
Maritime students are forced to start from the scratch if they wish to further
their qualification or re-train for other jobs.
Lack of adequate and current infrastructure
Government is expected to help in the provision of funds to purchase the
necessary equipment for proper training of Maritime student’s or personnel.
Absence of more attractive employment opportunities and High
unemployment rate.
9. LEVEL OF IMPROVEMENT IN MARITIME STUDIES
The awareness level of Maritime studies in Nigeria is still below
expectation looking at the level of involvement of NIMASA,
Academy in Oron and the various Universities, there is still need for
establishment of more institutes/University e.g RMU in Ghana..
The very challenges every maritime student faces significantly
varies by country, and these has not even been tackled effectively
and efficiently. The degree certificate have not been recognized in
the right perspective nationwide.
not much improvement have really been shown in the maritime
industry despite all the enlightenment and involvement of the
government of Nigeria.
the level of unemployment is too low and not encouraging maybe
not for the cadets.
10. RECOMMENDATION
Make significant investments in establishing and supporting Maritime
Education programs.
Proper recognition of certificates from maritime universities and
academies as equivalent to bachelor degree.
Standardize Maritime education programs and credentials so that
degrees and graduates are accepted across borders
Identify and develop career paths as found in banking, insurance, law,
these operations will increase professional mobility and enabled
experience
proper awareness of the maritime profession among young people
especially if inculcated into the curriculum of senior secondary school
11. Ensure that the STCW certificates issued in Nigeria are recognized
in other countries
Expand maritime curricula to meet the needs of individuals operating
in a complex global environment,
Enhance access to quality Maritime Education by encouraging
partnership of the public and private sectors.
Stakeholders joining hands so that Maritime Education Training
(MET) would be supplemented by more of practice oriented and‐
enhanced by current technologies.
Maritime lecturers should be involved in taking part in a formal
course as run by most Maritime universities and colleges, in
particular the World Maritime University (WMU).
12. CONCLUSION
There is need for government and private intervention
in maritime studies in Nigeria in order to empower human
resources and consequently improve the maritime sector.
We are also ambassador of this programme as we are
beneficiary.
Let us sow in others what we have reaped.
The future of Maritime industry is in our hands, lets do
justice to its stay and improvement.
