C-TPAT (Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) was formed in 2001 by U.S. Customs and Border Protection after the 9/11 terrorist attacks to establish cooperative relationships between importers and the government to protect trade from terrorists. Joining C-TPAT provides benefits like faster import processing, reduced customs inspections, and improved cargo security. Importers can sign a C-TPAT agreement, implement a security plan, and use a licensed customs broker that is a C-TPAT participant to enjoy an expedited import process with less scrutiny.
