3. The Author
Prof. Yuval Noah Harari is a historian, philosopher, and the
bestselling author of Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, Homo
Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century,
and Sapiens: A Graphic History. His books have sold over 40 million
copies in 65 languages, and he is considered one of the world’s most
influential public intellectuals today.
Born in Israel in 1976, Harari received his Ph.D. from the University of
Oxford in 2002 and is currently a lecturer at the Department of History
in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is the co-founder of
Sapienship, a multidisciplinary organization advocating for global responsibility whose mission is to clarify the
public conservation, support the quest for the solution and focus attention on the most important challenges
facing the world today. His writings examine free will, consciousness,, intelligence, happiness, and suffering.
Harari exemplifies the virtue of humility in that he debunks humanity’s illusion of superiority and mastery. He
claims morality, art, spirituality and creativity are universal human abilities embedded in our DNA.
4. INTRODUCTION
In general, Humility is the quality of being humble. Humility is an outward expression of an appropriate
inner, or self regard, and is contrasted with humiliation which is an imposition, often external, of shame upon
a person. Humility may be misappropriated as ability to suffer humiliation through self-denouncements
which in itself remains focused on self rather than low self-focus.
Looking into the text, the essay humility is written by a renowned essayist of Jerusalem, Yuval Noah Harari.
In this essay he exemplifies the virtue of humility in that he debunks humanity's illusions of superiority and
mastery. He claims morality, art, spirituality and creativity are universal human abilities embedded in our
DNA. In this essay, the essayist exemplifies the virtue of humility, which can be defined as "a recognition of
the real limits of our techno-social knowledge and ability", in that he debunks humanity's illusions of
superiority and mastery. Harari tells us that humility is a quality that most cultures lack. Most of the people
tend to believe that they are the centre of the word and their culture is linchpin of human history.
According to him, we are born with the ability to be moral, artistic, intellectual, and creative. He
demonstrates the virtue of humility by demolishing human illusions of supremacy and dominance over the
natural world.
5. SUMMARY
There is a strong belief among Chinese patriots that many outstanding ideas were born in China. There are
some Indians who think that aircraft and nuclear weapons were developed long before Confucius or Plato. it is
widely held in Greece that the beginning of history was marked by the writings of homer, Euripides, Aristotle,
and Plato. In the eyes of jews, monotheism belongs to them and they are one of the world's most important
religious groups. In the eyes of the Jewish people, the gentiles (non-Jewish people) are inferior to them since
they don't consider themselves to be part of god's chosen peoples.
The fact that there are only 15 million jews doesn't make them more significant than the Hindu faith, which
has many more adherents. Similarly, the religion of Islam now regards all history previous to Mohammed to
be unimportant.
Each group considers itself to be the centre of the universe, as well as the originator of the most significant
ideas and innovations. No group is truly unique. Before them, there was at least one group that had the same
ideas and beliefs as them. The religions that have lasted are the ones that were the most violent. They were
able to get the most people to believe in them. One should not feel proud of inventing monotheism since it has
led to the destruction of the planet.
Religious tolerance has been advocated by certain wise men and women, but the general tendency has always
been to condemn individuals with differing religious views. Ironically, most faiths warn against this kind of
selfishness.
6. THEME
As a general rule, most individuals feel that they are the centre of the universe and that their culture is the
foundation of human evolution. Most people don't have the ability to be humble, says Harari, and that's
something we should work on. Humbleness is shown in this article by the author's criticism of humanity's false
sense of superiority and control over its technological and social environment.
In the essay, the author talks about people of different groups and cultures and their claims and beliefs towards
their history and important inventions. In the world, people of different groups boast about their cultures and
believe that their cultures as the foundation of human history. By this arrogant faith, these people tend to stand
in the centre of the world.
The author tries to destroy the superiority complex of some big groups. He has highlighted the point how
people think their position is at the centre of the universe. The author eventually tries to tell people not to think
they are the only superior people/community. He says not to have the feeling of self-centreness. The essays
gives us the lesson that we should respect everyone with different views rather than to bully them. We should
not think of ourselves only and respect other thoughts and ideas.
7. PRACTICAL ASPECT
Humility is in fact, one of the most powerful and important attributes of growth, both in and out of the
ring. Being humble helps to build trust and facilitates learning, which are key aspects of leadership and
personal development. Humility is an asset for self-improvement. By living a humble life, you recognize the
areas of your life that need work.
Here are some examples of what it means to live with modesty, humbleness and have the feeling of
humility:
•Being coachable and allowing criticism to fuel development rather than resentment.
•Apologizing after making a mistake.
•Wanting the best for others rather than trying to harbor all success for yourself.
•Helping others who are below you in skill to improve rather than looking down on them.
•Looking towards those above you with an eye of inspiration and not jealousy.
•Competing with yourself more so than with others.
Moreover, you can build humility in yourself by focusing on your strength and weakness, changing beliefs,
getting out of your comfort zone, building confidence and helping others.
8. CONCLUSION
All people and group have different version of world history. The world history proves that if you try to give
opposite idea, you will be persecuted. It hints all people in this world are self-centred. Most of the people
lack humility. Humility is a trait that most societies lack. Most individuals feel that they are at the centre of
the universe and that their culture is the foundation of human history.
The author focuses on how people lack humility and are self-centred. The essay teaches us to have humility
and respect people/groups ideas and views. If we are self-centred and only focus on ourselves than we
cannot progress and will invite war and violence’s. People in this world try to show their superiority and
take over the world. We should not have such feeling. Everyone is unique and have some abilities . The
feeling of one’s being superiority is just an illusion.
