Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has been used as a biopesticide in agriculture, forestry and mosquito control because of its
advantages of specific toxicity against target insects, lack of polluting residues and safety to non-target organisms. The
insecticidal properties of this bacterium are due to insecticidal proteins produced during sporulation. Despite these
ecological benefits, the use of Bt biopesticides has lagged behind the synthetic chemicals. Genetic improvement of Bt
natural strains, in particular Bt recombination, offers a promising means of improving efficacy and cost-effectiveness of Bt-
based bioinsecticide products to develop new biotechnological applications. On the other hand, the different Bacillus
species have important biotechnological applications; one of them is carried out by producing secondary metabolites, which
are the study object of natural product chemistry. The amazing structural variability of these compounds has attracted the
curiosity of chemists and the biological activities possessed by natural products have inspired the pharmaceutical industry to
search for lead structures in microbial extracts. Screening of microbial extracts reveals the large structural diversity of natural
compounds with broad biological activities, such as antimicrobial, antiviral, immunosuppressive, and antitumor activities that
enable the bacterium to survive in its natural environment. These findings widen the target range of Bacillus spp., in special
B. thuringiensis, besides insecticidal activity and help people to better understand its role in soil ecosystem.

Sugarcane, an important source of sugar, plays a substantial role in world economy. As a C4 plant this has very efficient

metabolic pathway. The complex polyploid nature of the crop makes it more difficult to pin point the key players in this
complex pathway. Despite its importance, little is known about the exact mechanism of sucrose accumulation and its
regulation in sugarcane. Many enzymes have been proposed to have a key role in determining the ultimate sucrose content
in sugarcane. There are evidences to show that some of these like Sucrose Phosphate Synthase (SPS) and Sucrose
Synthase (SuSy) are encoded by multiple genes that show organ specifity in sugarcane. Especially in a crop like sugarcane
where the classical techniques are of limited help in elucidating various genetic complexities, molecular techniques can be of
help in throwing some light on the grey areas. Molecular marker strategies will be of help in understanding some aspects of
sucrose metabolism and its regulation in this crop, thus complementing the ongoing crop improvement programmes.

Not all stress is stressful; instead, it appears that stress in the environment, below the mutation threshold, is essential for
many subtle manifestations of population structures and biodiversity, and has played a substantial role in the evolution of life.

and anthropogenic stressors. These stress responses include the activation of oxygen, the biotransformation system, the
stress proteins, and the metal-binding proteins. The potential of stress response lies in the transcription of genes, whereas
the actual response is manifested by proteins and metabolites. Yet, not all stress responses are in the genes: micro-RNAs
and epigenetics play central roles. Multiple stressors, such as environmental realism, do not always act additively; they may
even diminish one another. Furthermore, one stressor often prepares the subject for the next one to come and may produce
extended lifespans and increased offspring numbers, thus causing shifts in population structures.

This book provides the ﬁrst comprehensive analysis of the ecological and evolutionary effects of stress.
