ESSAY #4—PERSUASION/ARGUMENT
Essay 4 is a persuasive essay. Your goal is to present a convincing argument on one of the prescribed topics by using outside sources to support your argument. You MUSTuse the movie, Crash, as your major source.
Genre/Medium: Persuasive/Argumentative Essay—Typed
Purpose:
Unlike an editorial, the persuasive essay is not merely your personal opinion about a topic, but an argument that provides scholarly evidence of research (i.e. various sources, interviews, quotes, and sufficient statistical data) to support your position. Because of the length and complexity of this project, it is essential that you choose a topic that you really care about, one that you truly want to learn more about, and one that you will be interested in writing about.
Format:
Your seven-to-nine paragraph essay must contain a concrete closed thesis statement at the end of the first paragraph. In addition to your introduction, three supporting paragraphs and conclusion, your essay will also contain a paragraph of opposition and a paragraph of refutation. You will use MLA documentation to write your paper and we will consult with each other about your topic before the final draft is written.
Audience:
This essay will target a scholarly audience. Therefore, your language and style should meet the intellectual needs of individuals who read on a collegiate level. As you think about your audience, write to pique the interest of your audience by considering what your readers already know and what they need to know.
Stance:
For this essay, it is imperative that you take a stance and present ideas that convey your stance throughout your essay. Never contradict your thesis.
Requirements:
Although your final requirement for this project is a completed essay, you will carry out the steps for writing a research paper by participating in four separate graded activities that lead up to your final essay. Before you submit your final essay you will complete the following:
1. The Research Proposal /Thesis Statement Defense (Unit Quiz #4)
2. An Annotated Bibliography (Unit Quiz #5)
3. A Peer Review
4. Final Essay
Getting Started
Before choosing your topic you should consider what you want to write about. Once you have chosen your topic, you should decide where you stand on the issue. Next, you want to develop your position with evidence—research—that will validate your point. You will need to use at least 3 sources of support for your essay. Finally, you will present your argument in a way that convinces the reader that your perspective is a valid one. Remember, this essay, like the others you have written, should have a specific, detailed, three-point thesis statement.
Dos and Don'ts
· Don’t deviate from the topic.
· Don’t debate the obvious; go beyond the surface.
· Don’t rely strictly on your feeling ...

Topics
Use the movie,
Crash
,
and at least three outside sources to defend or refute one of the
four
statements listed below.
Perceptions of racial stereotypes and prejudices are manifested
throughout the film,
Crash,
and in some cases, characters of the same race are juxtaposed to
perpetuate these perceptions. For example, the movie writer
caused the affluent television producer, Cameron
Thayer, to “crash” into the thuggish car thief, Anthony.
However, when Cameron gets the opportunity to interact with
Anthony on a personal level, he chides Anthony. He states
, “
Y
ou embarrass me, you embarrass yourself.” The movie
further explores how racial tensions and violence are generated
by individuals and by groups of specific ethnic communities.
4. Write an essay that agrees or disagrees that the film,
Crash,
demonstrates that racial prejudice is not a phenomenon that is
specific to one ethnic or social group.
In the movie
Crash
, the story revolves around the lives of a number of individuals
who are culturally diverse. At various points in the story some
of the characters are involved in a vehicular accident in which
their lives converge in distinctively different ways. As the
story progresses,
the audience
witness
es
, within society, evidence of anger, mistrust, dishonesty, family
dysfunction, violence, police brutality, exploitation, privilege,
and marginalization.
Write an essay in which you agree or disagree that individuals,
despite negative and societal experiences, are capable of
creating life-changing salvation or transformation, as
exemplified in the movie
Crash
for several of the characters.
As
Crash
clearly articulates, individuals are not born prejudiced
,
but develop this mindset over time as a result of life’s
experiences where they are marginalized because of their socio-
economic status and ethnicity. On the contrary, there are those
within society who, because of their “privileged” status,
somehow deem themselves above the law and do as they please
without any fear of punitive actions taken against them. They
typically buy their way into and out of situations at will,
sending the message to the less fortunate and powerful that they
are, indeed, above and are the law of the land.
5. Write an essay in which you agree or disagree that the
“privileged” within society create many of the social
stereotypes to maintain their “privileged” status.
Some argue that a distinct difference exists between being
prejudice (having an adverse opinion or leaning formed without
just grounds or before sufficient knowledge)
,
and being a racist (the belief that race is the primary
determinant of human traits and capacities, and that racial
differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race).
Write an essay in which you argue that in the film
Crash
, Officer John Ryan is racist, prejudiced, or both.

CHoP Clinical Trials Project
Drexel University
Fall 2016
Goal - Why are we here?
The Problem:
CHoP needs a new marketing approach that will convince
parents to sign their children up to participate in its studies.
Our Goal:
Find the most effective marketing strategies to attract
volunteers to CHoP’s research studies
7. Providing analyses of interviews, help CHoP gain sustainable
development in the future
CHOP’s current marketing approach: too clinical,
Overview of Project
Create A/B Test that targets potential volunteers with the new
marketing approach.
Conduct interviews to determine what approaches parents are
most responsive to.
PHASE 1
PHASE 2
Empathy approach or “pocket change” approach
Dr. K: Key messages:
We are looking at this in a disciplined way
We took a 2 step process
Would be nice to have the slide show a neat right to left
progression with an arrow built in somehow to show that this is
a linear progression.

Dr. K: The goal is for him to see that we spoke to a diverse of
people that will provide different perspectives. This is where we
show that we first threw out a wide net to capture as many
benefits and concerns as possible and then later in the pres. We
show how we focused on the key ideas.
The 2 ideas in class were to either show some pie charts or to
have 12 boxes with a couple of bullets on income, #kids, etc in
each. I lean towards the boxes, but leave it to you to decide
what will communicate the idea in the fastest and most profound
way.
12 different families, ranging from their 20’s to 50’s, married
and single, healthy children and non-healthy
Completed phone interviews and transcribed each one
What we asked
Background information
Health level and online behaviour
Medical trials or research
Benefits and obstacles
Attitude towards CHoP study
9. Background information includes: age, job, income level, how
many kids, etc. And then we start asking them about their health
condition. For example: “what would you consider to be your
kids’ overall health” or “how do you evaluate your kid’s healthy
level.” We dig every information relates to their kids health.
After we understand their kids’ health condition, either good or
bad, we ask them about their solution relates that issue. For
instance: “how kind of source do you use to address that
problem.” Then we ask about their attitude toward medical trial,
for example: “do you consider yourself a frequency social
media user? After we get their answer to the medical trials, we
keep asking why they answer that. And this leads us to the next
part: obstacles or benefits. This is about the fear they concern
or the benefits they can get by join the medical trial. A good
example can be“if you are invited to a medical trial, will you be
open to it?” Different answers lead us to medical trail’s
obstacles or benefits. Finally, we would introduce CHOP project
to them and ask their feeling after hearing about CHOP. And we
also ask them if they get a chance to help CHOP’s medical
study, if they would like to do that.
Dr. K: make sure you provide examples of questions we asked
(you can put them on the slide or voice them over, but don’t
forget to include one “good” question for each. The goal is for
him to say, “wow, I wonder how people answered THAT
question?” so pick interesting ones.)
Active Lifestyle
10. Common
Most kids and parents love outdoor activities: swimming,
soccer, basketball, volleyball, etc
No chronic or serious or hereditary illness
Majority of parents pay much attention to kids’ diet and eating
habits
Health care is valued by most parents
Differed
Young kids prefer indoor activities more
One kid has heart murmur, one has eczema, two have bronchitis,
five have allergies (caused by pets, peanut or seasonal)
Only a few parents have experiences with clinical trials (as
volunteers)
From the group of people we interviewed we heard a set of
different things regarding the parent and child’s lifestyle…
Some parents mentioned their kids enjoy outdoor activities such
as swimming, soccer, basketball and other mentioned how their
kids prefer indoor activities… blah
Dr. K: change the title to summarize the key finding. You may
consider listing a few things that we heard from nearly all
participants on the left and on the right have things that differed
across people. The goal here is to get him grounded in the type
of people we spoke to. We are trying to assure him that the
folks we spoke to are typical people he sees on his current panel
and the same people we are hoping to influence. So do what you
need to to communicate that.
Social Media: Facebook as a Primary Outlet
Spend anywhere from twice a day to 2-3 hrs/day on Social
11. media
“I check my Instagram and Facebook once or twice a day. Being
a mom and student I don’t get to Facebook or Instagram much
often.”- Mother of 2
Some correspondents noted they would check a Facebook ad for
a survey from CHoP
“If I got mail or saw on facebook something about anxiety
research I would definitely look into it and share with my
daughter.”-Mother of 2
Facebook is the primary social media outlet for most
correspondents
Dr. K: The main takeaway for this is that some people seem to
rely on friends and others want the more official sounding
message. So summarize the way that people are using social
media, but make sure you give some evidence (ideally with
quotes that gives the idea that different sources have different
outcomes for people in terms of whether or not they trust it).
Two Common ThemesPersonal GainPay It Forward“As long as
there is compensation for what is being done that is comparable
to my kids pay I would be interested” -Mother of 2
“Absolutely! It’s a huge burden. Something like that is a huge
burden to have on top of everything else. I work for a company
that has good benefits you know.” -Mother of 1
“If it was something that I was concerned about, obesity with
my daughter, yeah I would definitely want to participate”
“If you’re talking about someone who has a chronic illness and
you’re trying to help a child, it would sway me to want to be
part of a clinical trial. you know, if a kid has a tumor, and
there's a treatment for that, and you want to put one of them in a
medical trial, I'd say yeah let's do it. “ -Mother of 3

Fear of side effects further in the future or trauma from the

General bias toward clinical trials
Clinical trials require taking medicines or being subject to
potentially dangerous situations.
Dr. K: these are good. If you can, we want to finish this slide by
convincing him that these concerns seem to come later in the
process and that they take a lot of info to overcome, so we tried
to concentrate on some of the benefits that might hook a person
in to find out more. See if you can lead him into that, which
takes us to the next slide.

CHoP Clinical Trial Campaign
14. For the past 10 weeks our class have been working on how to
market a Clinical Trial to parents.CHoP needs a new marketing
approach that will convince parents to sign their children up to
participate in its studies. It is one of the struggles because for
the trial to be successful all depends on how many children
CHoP gets for the trial. The more children involved the more
research and data they have to find a cure.
Our goals as a class is to find the most effective marketing
strategies to attract volunteers to CHoP’s research studies. Also,
we are providing analyses of interviews, to help CHoP gain
sustainable development in the future. To reach these goals we
need to all work together coming up with different ideas and
strategies to succeed with this project.
Final Outline
CHOP Campaign (Danielle) I can do this part 1 and 2.
1. Initial Problem: CHOP needs a new way to market clinical
studies, especially those that involve children
2. The goal: To find the most effective marketing strategies to
attract volunteers to CHoP’s research studies. We need to
provide analyses of interviews, help CHoP gain sustainable
development in the future
Part 1 of the Project
· Conduct interviews with parents (report on all 12 interviews,
see PPT)
Part 2 of the Project
· A/B testing of the two marketing approaches
The Interviews (Add a chart/pivot table) Comment by Olivia
Guerrasio: I can write this part.
· As a class we spoke to a total of 12 families.
· 6 Families were above a salary of 60,000 and 6 were below the
60,000 salary a year. (Why did we choose these types of
families?)
15. · Range of kids in the family was 1 to 3 kids.
Obstacles in attracting participants:
1. The child might get sick from the medication
2. Having the child hooked up to wires and being away from
their parent
3. The parents thought you need to take medicine for a trial
4. Fear of side effects after the trial.
The 2 Common Themes we found
1. Personal Gain: Families will want to participate in clinical
studies because they will gain something out of it, such as
compensation, better insurance, or better treatment.
2. Pay it forward: Families will want to participate in clinical
studies because they will feel as if they are doing something
good for others, or doing something charitable.
Why We Came Up with These Statements
Where We Are Now: At this point, A/B testing is beginning,
and we will soon see which strategy is most effective in
attracting parents to participate in clinical trials for children.
Marketing Strategies:
Our group came up with two sayings. We thought using a
hashtag #FTK helps remind people why you are doing the trial
and stands up to people. Also, everyone who knows CHOP.
#FTK is their slogan.
Pay it forward: Do it #forthekids
Personal Gain: Better treatment, better doctors, better life. Do
clinical trials #foryourkids.
For a picture for the campaign should be a child with a doctor
from CHOP at the hospital. It represents what the trial would
look like, along with looking friendly and not scary to parents
or the child.
What We are Recommending
-Tie these directly to findings. I.e. We found this, so this is
what we are recommending.
What We Learned:
16. (my part)
· We had a unique experience where the two families we
interviewed did not want to participate in clinical trials. Being
the outlier from the group made us understand the fear many
families feel when they hear, “clinical trials”.
· We learned that these families just need more information,
“clinical trials” is a scarier phrase than what it is in reality.
More information can alleviate a lot of that fear and can help
push families to participate.
· We found out another reason parents are reluctant to
participate in the clinical trials is that parents tend to be very
sensitive and protective when people ask about their children’s
information.
· We learned that Facebook and Google are the most common
social media tools parents using for medical information
searching Comment by Danielle Kiniry: Make sure you do
charts and pivots
· Location of clinical trials matters (only in downtown makes it
inconvenient for families with small children to travel)
· We learned the importance of the clinical trials, it really could
help the people in the clinical trials, and make their life better.

Introduction
What are your and your partner’s job titles?
I work for Centinel Spine and she is a stay home mom.
19. Location?
North Philadelphia

Three
How old are they?
6, 11, and 12

One boys two girls
Child’s activities
Not really
Health of children
How would you describe your child’s health?
My two daughters are pretty healthy but my son has
Asthma.
Has your child had any major illnesses or surgeries?
No
Child’s Diet/Allergies?
My son is allergic to cats.
How do you research medical information?
Uh…Google
Have you ever use Facebook, twitter or any other social media
to find medical information?
No….sometimes I saw articles that people posted but I
never search on there for actual information.
Have you ever spoken to a doctor via social media?
No
Medical Trial Thoughts/Research
1. What do you know about medical trials?
I don’t have too much knowledge on that.
2. Have you or your child ever been involved in a medical trial?
No
3. What is your initial attitude toward medical trials?
20. Skeptical about it.
(Why skeptical?)
Because they are trying to use new things to make some
work…I guess…to make it better? That’s why I’m
skeptical about it.
4.Would you volunteer your children to participate in a medical
trial?
No
Obstacles/Benefits
1. If someone were to ask you to have your child participate in a
medical trial at CHOP, how would you feel (react)?
I will tell them no…because I feel not comfortable for a
primary doctor asking my child to volunteer on a
research.
2. What are the benefits to participating in medical trials?
I guess whatever they trying on the kids will make it better
for the next kid, but I don't want my kids risk for an
experiment that they are not even sure what they are looking
for.
3. What do you see as the obstacles to participating in medical
trials?
The obstacles would be that you are putting your child in a
horrible way. As an experiment, you know, there
might be sight effects. That’s an obstacle. They might offer
you free health insurance because you are doing it, but
again, the insurance gonna cover what happen to your
kids if there’s side effects. So those are the obstacles you are
getting in the middle for. Cause you don’t get anything for
free… it’s not really predictable what’s going to
happen to your kids after they take those medicines.
4. Would you be more likely to participate in a medical trial if
there was compensation?
No…I look it for long term…you might pay more for that
later on…(if there’s any side effects of the research)
