product represents particular social group?

2. Representation
Representation is how you represent a certain social
group in a way that is either positive or negative
Social Groups
Social groups is a gathering of individuals who share
similar belief, ideologies
During my work on TV drama we focused on representation. As we live in
an increasingly fragmented society, TV provides imagery and
representations of lives, meaning, practices and values of different social
groups. These could be conveyed in either a positive or negative way or
could be familiar or unfamiliar with its audience. TV 'fills in our picture of
the world through its representations and changes views on the different
social groups which are likely to be stereotypical.
Representations refers to aspects of reality which involves;
Gender, Age, Disability, Ethnicity, Regional identity, Age, Class etc
3. Example Of Representations
Age And Gender
For example elderly people are most likely to be
represented as peaceful, gentle, polite and very
fragile. However teenagers are represented as
uncontrollable, hyperactive and are known for
having a careless attitude.
Men are often represented as the ones with
authority and strong, whereas women are
represented as the passive and much more
weaker sex
4. Social Group
The social group that was represented in our thriller opening was mainly teenagers. We
used young characters in order to emphasis it The female was represented as a
vulnerable girl who had no idea what was happening, as she was getting ready to go
out, like a typical teenager would do. Where as on the other hand we used a a young
male who was the intruder to be represented in a negative way. Even though the
intruders' identity was not shown, his was wearing a hoodie which stereotypically
young males usually wear.
5. Gender Representation
We Gender representation was also used, The male was a was
represented in a negative way , he was the Intruder (villain). The effect of
lighting also reflected on the gender, for example we used dark lighting
to represent the bad images it sets.
Whereas we have portrayed women as being week and helpless and the
most obvious victim. The lighting that we used also helped to lighting
reflect that idea as we used bright lighting through our most parts of
her scene.
6. Stereotype
I think our thriller opening is typical of the traditional film opening in the
way that we follow the stereotypes of society, for example women are
nearly always portrayed as the innocent victims and the men are
portrayed as the criminal. In our thriller opening Intruder there is the
killer who is a male and the women is the innocent victim. Another
stereotype that we used in our thriller opening is the use of a young male
who is a killer, this is typical of the society we live in today because
young male are seen as trouble and committing more crime then
females.
