1. Advantages of GeoExchange HVAC Systems
Geothermal heat pump systems (geoexchange), are the most energy efficient, environmen-
tally clean, and cost-effective space conditioning systems available, according to the EPA.
Proven Technology
The GeoExchange technology was developed almost 100 years ago. In the U.S., systems were first utilized over 50 years
ago in the Northwest. Since then hundreds of thousands of systems have been installed. These systems have be refined
over time and proven to cost significantly less to provide a BTU of energy from a GeoExchange system than a BTU of
energy from a gas fired or electric heat pump for cooling.

How it Works
The system uses the earth as a giant heat sink. In the cooling season heat is extracted from the air in the building and
transferred through the heat pump to the ground loop piping. The glycol water mixture in the ground loop then carries
the heat back to the earth. During the heating season this process is reversed, bringing warm air up from the earth. The
only external energy needed for GeoExchange is the minimal amount of electricity required to operate the heat pump,
ground loop pump and distribution fan or pump.
Longer Equipment Life
The geo-heat pump system is usually mounted inside of the building and is sheltered from exposure to the elements.
As a result its average life expectancy is 20 years. When compared to the average equipment life expectancy for roof
mounted HVAC installations, GeoExchange equipment lasts over 33% longer.
Overcoming Obstacles
The concern over increased initial costs is the primary obstacle preventing GeoExchange systems from becoming more
popular. The need for a geo-field, a series of bores or trenches dug to bury the pipes, can cause the initial costs to be up
to 50% more than traditional HVAC systems. A geo-field, however, can last over 50 years, making the investment
