1. The document discusses the importance of resource conservation. It defines resources and categorizes them as natural or artificial, renewable or non-renewable.
2. Conservation aims to prevent overexploitation of natural resources so they can be sustained for future generations. It involves proper management and planning to ensure balanced use of resources.
3. As population grows, consumption of resources is increasing rapidly. If not properly managed, this could lead to serious scarcity. Conservation helps maintain balance and biodiversity for all living things.
2. WHAT ARE RESOURCES ? 2
A resource can be defined as ‘any natural or artificial substance, energy or
organism, which is used by human being for its welfare.
These resources are of two types: natural and artificial.
These man-made resources are also derived from some other natural resources
Resources
Natural Artificial
(e.g. electricity)
Exhaustible Inexhaustible
Renewable Non-renewable
(e.g. wind, water, forests) (e.g. coal, petroleum, iron )

4. WHAT IS RESOURCE CONSERVATION? 4
• Conservation is the proper management of a natural resource to prevent
its exploitation, destruction or degradation. Conservation is the sum total
of activities, which can derive benefits from natural resources but at the
same time prevent excessive use leading to destruction or degradation.
• . For example, if you leave on a light in a room and no one is using the
electricity it is wasted. Turning out the light when you are in no need of
the electricity is conservation.
Whether the land is on a golf course, a subdivision, a farm, or a wooded park--
it should be protected and used in a way that preserves today’s resources for
tomorrow.
5. NEED FOR CONSERVATION 5
As the human population is continuously growing the consumption of natural
resources is also increasing. With the increasing industrialization and urbanization of the
modern human society, the use of all the resources is rising. If they are not properly used and
well managed, a serious scarcity will result. Therefore we need to conserve the natural
resources.
• Conservation is not just important for animals but to all living things.
• Conserving natural resources reduces the rapid depletion of biodiversity
and it maintains the balance of the cycle.
• Conservation means a lot because without it ecosystems would fall apart
and animals will become extinct.
6. Necessity for conservation of resources: 6
It aims at sustainable benefit to the present generation.
It maintains a potential to meet the needs and aspirations of future
generations.
Proper, judicious and planned use of natural resources may sustain the
environment.
Proper exploitation and conservation of renewable resources create fewer
problems.
Over-exploitation causes damage of the existing environment.
7. Conserving natural resources 7
Think and do the eco friendly exercises in life
• To conserve natural resources, you should try to use them only when necessary:
3 R’s
– Reduce
– Reuse
– Recycle
9. HOW CAN SOIL BE CONSERVED ? 9
• Soil conservation is the management of soil to prevent destruction.
• Maintenance of soil fertility
• Control on grazing
• Reforestation
• Terracing
• Contour ploughing
10. Reasons for the degradation of water 10
• Increasing population
• Sewage
• Industrial waste
• Agricultural wastes
• Continuous decrease of ground water level
11. How can Water be conserved? 11
• Growing vegetation
• Constructing dams and reservoirs
• Sewage should be treated
• Treating industrial wastes
• Judicious use of water
• Rainwater harvesting
12. Reasons for the degradation of air 12
• Industrial emissions
• Vehicle Exhaust
• Burning of fossil fuels
• Agricultural activities
13. How Can Air Be Conserved? 13
• By legislation, such as the Clean Air Act
• By Technology such as scrubbers
- devices used to remove pollutants before they are released by smokestacks
• Use public mode trasportation
• Conserve energy
14. HOW ENERGY CAN BE CONSERVED ? 14
Minimise exploitation of non-renewable energy resources.
Emphasis on use of renewable sources of energy.
Stop wastage of energy.
Creating awareness among people regarding wise and judicious use of
energy.
More use of renewable energy like hydro, wind energy etc.and bio-mass
based energy.
15. ROLL OF INDIVIDUAL PERSON IN RESOURCE CONSERVATION 15
Planting trees
Stop the over utilization of natural resources
Mixed cropping, crop rotation, and proper use of fertilizer
Protect wildlife
Develop energy saving methods
Utilize renewable energy sources
Recycle the waste
Rain water harvesting
Educate local people
Walk instead of riding in a car
Choose products that have less packaging.
16. LEGISLATION FOR CONSERVATION IN INDIA 16
1) Environment Protection Act,1986
2) Forest(conservation) Act,1980
3) National Forest Policy,1988
4) Wildlife Protection Act,1972 & ammended in 1991
