2. The ancient Olympic games
The first Olympic Games took place in
Olympia in Eleia in 1370 B.C.
To see who raised t he flame athletes
ran about 185 m.The first winner was
Coroebus of Eleia, in 776 B.C. The prize
winners took olive branches which
symbolize vitality.At first the games
lasted 1 day but in 632 B.C 5
days.Women were not allowed to watch
the men because they were naked.
The most important thing of the Olympic
Games was in the period of Pericles (490
– 429b.c.) when Athens dominated in
the world of classical Greek art and
culture.When the Olympic Games took
place -every four years- the wars
stopped. The ancient Olympic Games
lasted for 1000 years, 293 total
Olympiads. In 393 AD Theodosius the
Great banned everything that had to do
with paganism and with the continuation
of the Olympic Games.
3. The modern Olympic games
The person who first restarted the
Olympic games was Mr Pier de
Coubertin after some very important
ancient discoveries which were at
ancient Olympia at the end of 19th
century. The first country that assumed
the responsibility to organize the
Olympic games was Greece(Athens
1896). These games had 285
participants from 14 countries who
competed in athletics, cycling
, rowing, fencing, weight
lifting, gymnastics, swimming
,wrestling, horse racing , sailing, tennis
and shooting. Later in the program of
the Olympic games three more
sports, football, basketball, hokey were
added.

Eva Christodoulou is a Greek
former gymnast, gymnastics
("Ensemble") ,and an Olympic

coach. She particularly

Sophia Bekatorou is a Greek
sailor, an athlete of NC
Tzitzifies Kallithea and twice
Olympic medalist
(2004, 2008). At the Olympic
Games in Athens in 2004 she
won the gold medal in 470
category. At the 2008
Olympics in Beijing she won a
bronze medal together with
Sofia Papadopoulou and
Virginia Kravarioti.
Pyrros Dimas is an Olympic
weightlifting athlete. He is three
times gold (Barcelona 1992, Atlanta
1996 and Sydney 2000) and
bronze medalist once in the
Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.
The most successful athlete in
Olympic history of Greek sport he
is the only weightlifter until today
with three gold and one bronze
Olympic medals
Chrissopigi Devetzi is an athlete of
triple jump and long jump, with great
honors. Considered as one of the
greatest athletes in the history of
triplicate after holding the fourth best
performance of all time in this event
with 15.32 meters, she achieved
performance in the triple jump
qualifying at the 2004 Olympic
Games in Athens on August
21, 2004.
7. Ilias Iliadis was an olympic
medalist in (2004), world
champion in (2010) and
twice European champion in
(2004, 2011) in judo.
Thomas Bimis is a medalist of synchronized diving. With his
team-mate Niko Syranidi, they won the gold medal in
synchronized diving 3 m springboard at the 2004 Olympic
Games in Athens.
They both have shown good performances since 2000. For
the first time they took part in the Olympic Games in Sydney
in 2000, occupying the 36th position. Bimis had the biggest
success in his career, at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.
In February 2008 the two men claimed a place in the 2008
Olympics in Beijing.

Vassilis Polymeros is a Greek rowing
champion, twice Olympic champion in 2004 and
2008 competed in the double sculls light
weight.In 1996 he took part in the Olympic
Games in Atlanta, and was ranked 10th. At the
Olympic Games in Sydney (2000) he took the
eighth place in the double sculls, along with
Panagiotis Miliotis. In 2001 he won a silver
medal at the World Championships in quadruple
sculls lightweight along with
Kourkouriki, Skiathitis and Milioti. In
Olympics 2004 in Athens Vassilis Polymeros
and Nikos Skiathitis won the bronze medal in
the 2,000 meters, the double sculls lightweight.
Anastasia (Tasoula) Kelesidou is
diskobolus.I Tasoula samples showed her
talent from an early age. He went to
Sydney for the Olympic Games in 2000 as
one of the favorites, and vindicated this
title as he won the silver medal and second
place in that event.
After so many second and third positions
in major competitions Tasoula Kelesidou
searched for the gold medal at the 2004
Olympics in Athens, something that
seemed possible if one takes into account
the performance that year (67.03 m).
Passed the final and celebrated with a
throw in 66.68 meters lapped until the fifth
attempt, but ultimately once again won the
silver medal.
