         The cigarette making machine is invented
It can produce the same amount of cigarettes in a day that
             previously took 488 people to do
During WW1 James Duke offers free cigarettes to the troops
Women and Smoking
Women are targeted and are encouraged to hold their cigarettes high as “torches of
                                   freedom”
                    This is considered to be “the soft sell”
In 1945 scientists discover that cigarettes are addictive
1964 U.S. Surgeon General publishes a report on the health
                consequences of smoking.
Deception and manipulation by the tobacco industry
                   The 5 ‘S’s’
                       - sex
                   - slimness
                - sophistication
                    - success
                     - status

EPA and SHS publish a report that states second hand smoke
                           kills!
B.C. passes legislation
• 1986 businesses must have smoke free work environments
• 1987 Canada bans tobacco ads
• 1994 Law passed – you must be 19 years old to buy tobacco
1995 Supreme Court Ruling
- tobacco companies can sell and advertise
- warnings must be posted on all packages
It is estimated that by the year 2030
       Tobacco related illnesses
     Will be the #1 cause of death
DON’T SMOKE!
