FLAVA 2014 Talk
Foreign Language Association of Virginia
After Spanish became mandatory starting in Kindergarten in her department in 2002, the presenter had to redefine how she was teaching, but more particularly how others were viewing French. Her classes went from 70 students per grade to 10 students. Since she implemented the simple techniques that she will demonstrate in this session, her classes have doubled in size. The idea is not to reinvent what we are doing, but simply to modify certain elements of our class to change perspective. This session will also include promotional activities that are easy to implement. Participants will be given lesson plans and will be able to adapt this lesson to the level of each student.
10. Art project
Cooperate with art teachers
Decide which period to study
Allow some class time to paint
Take your project outside the classroom
11. Projet: Je suis artiste
For this project, you will have to be a French artist (painter or sculptor).
You will need to:
__ talk with fluency about yourself, your life and your work (as an artist) during the presentation.
__ show a picture of what could have been the inspiration for one of your painting/sculpture.
__ be able to talk about your work in a fancy way, using expressions to describe art!
__ be able to criticize other people’s work with an artistic eye.
__ create a class painting using some of the techniques from impressionism (group work)
Tips: When choosing a picture, make sure you pay attention to details. Your photograph does not have to
be exactly the same as the painting/sculpture but the main idea/feeling will have to be there. For example,
do not use a painting with trees blooming when it is Fall outside!
