Like all other rituals, Eid is also instructed by Allah (SWT) to perform. Ibn Omar (RA) narrated in a Hadis that Rasul
(PBUH)said: “I am ordered to observe Eid in the day of Qurbani”. Allah(SWT)hasdetermineditforthisUmmah.
One Sahabi asks to the Prophet (PBUH), O Rasul (PBUH), if I have only one Maniha for drinking milk, should I make
it Qurbani? Prophet (SWT) replied no. However, you will cut your hair, nail, moustache and clean the hair under the
navel.ThatwillbecountedfullQurbanitoAllah(SWT)foryou.(SunaneAbuDaud2/385,SunaneNasai2/179)
Meaning (importance) of Qurbani:Zaed Ibn Arqam (RA) reported that the companions of the Prophet (PBUH)
asked: O Messenger of Allah! what is this sacrice? He said: The way of your forefather Abraham (PBUH). They
said: What is for us therein, O Messenger of Allah? He said: There is one reward for every hair. They asked: For
wool,OMessengerofAllah?Hesaid:Thereisonerewardforeverystrandofwool.(Ahmad,IbnMajah).
Ayesha (RA) reported that the Apostle of Allah (PBUH) said: The son of Adam does not do anything of the actions
on the day of sacrice which is more pleasing to Allah than the shedding of blood, and he will come on the
Resurrection Day with its horns, hairs and hoops: and the blood certainly falls in a place near Allah before it falls
downontheground.Somakeyourselfpuriedtherewith. (Tirmizi, IbnMajah)
WhatreachestoAllah(SWT):Allah (SWT) says in holy Quran, “It is not their meat nor their blood, that reaches
Allah:itisyourpietyThatreachesHim”(SuraHajj,V.37).
Taqwa and obedience to Allah (SWT) is the main objective of the Ibadat. Qurbani is a great Ibadat. However, esh
and meat do not reach to Allah (SWT) and that is not the purpose of Qurbani as well. The main purpose ot is to
recite Allah's name upon the animal during Qurbai and obeying the Orders of the Lord with sincerity.Ibadatwithout
sincerity and devotion is similar to the lifeless structure. Therefore, Sariah supported structure for Ibadat is also
important,because,AllahdenedthesestructuresforobservingHisordersaccurately.
Qurbani creates an inherent intention by establishing the knife ofcourage and resistance over the diseases of the
heartincluding hatred,jealousy,proudness,greediness,malice,worldlinessetc.
The way as Prophet (PBUH) performed the Qurbani:Zaber (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah slaughtered
on the day of sacrice two horned white and black castrahed rams. When he placed them facing the Qibla, he said:
I turned my face towards One who created the heavens and the earth upon the religion of Abraham, being upright
and I am not one of the polytheists. My prayer, my sacrice, my life and my death are all for Allah, the Lord of the
worlds. There is no partner for Him, and I have been ordered with that, and I am one of the Muslims. O Allah, it is
Thine and for Thee, from Muhammad and his people: In the name of Allah, Allah is the greatest. After then he
slaughtered.(Ahmad,AbuDaud,IbnMajah).
Abdullah Ibn Omar (RA) reported that the Apostle of Allah used to slaughter and sacrice at the praying place.
(Bukhari). Rules are that cows, goats and rams are slaughtered, however, camels are nahared (streamed).
Prophet (PBUH) did that way. HazratShaddadIbnAos (RA) reported that Rasul (PBUH) says, Allah (SWT) makes
compulsory in keeping kindness above all. Therefore, when you kill then kill in best way, when you slaughter, then
slaughter in the best way. Everybody sharpen his knife and keep his animal in peace.(Muslim 2/152, Sunane Abu
Daud2/389,SunaneNasai2/182,SunaneTirmizi 1/260,SunaneIbnMajah2/229).
MistakesthataredonefrequentlyinQurbani:TobeperfectandacceptedofIbadat,twoconditionsarenecessary.First
oneistomakecorrectandaccurateNiah(intention)withsincerityandthesecondoneistoperformIbadatfallowing
therulesandregulationsaccordingtoSariah.Similarly,twoconditionsareapplicableinthecaseofQurbani.Therefore,
ifanyoneperformsNiahperfectly,however,hedoesnotconducttheactivityaccordingtotheSharia,hisactionswill
notbecountedasIbadat.AslikeastheIbadatdoesnotcountiftheNiahiswrong.Allah(SWT)says, “Their esh and
theirbloodwillnotreachAllah,butself-denyingpracticewillreachHim(SuraHajj,V.37)”.
Here the explanation of the rst condition has come. However, the explanation of the second condition is available
intheChapterofQurbaniinHadisandFiqahbooksbasedonQuranandSunnah.
Since the rst of the two conditions are related to the heart, therefore, the mistake of it does not visible to us. The
secondconditionisrelatedtotheactions,therefore,itsindiscipline andmistakescanberealizedeasily.
QURBANI
(the Sacrice of I'd-ul-Azha)- be performed to attain Allah's Satisfaction only

The major mistakes that frequently happen in our society during making Qurbani are discussingin following
sectionsinshaallah, so that we are not involved in those mistakes in coming Qurbani as well as in future. May we
become fortunate in getting virtues and requitals by observing this Ibadat according to the instructions of Allah
(SWT)andHisRasul(PBUH)-Amin.
Confusion about becoming the QurbaniWajib or not: Nesab of Qurbani: Many people think that same conditions
are necessary for being the QurbaniWajib as the conditions necessary of having money, gold, silver for being the
ZakatFarz.Therefore, manypeopleofwealthy familydonotperformQurbani. Thisisawrong idea. Correct masala
(proposition) is that if an adult person has money or assets including land or luxury goods or excess furniture
whose values are more than the cost of 52 tola silver at the day of Qurbani, that parson is eligible for performing
Qurbani, however, for the Zakat all of these are not counted. Therefore, eventhough sufcient money, gold,
business assets etc. are not available, costs of excess wealth, furniture (more than necessary)arealso counted for
theQurbanitobeWajib.(BadaeusSanae4/198,AddurrulMukhtar6/318,Alamgiri5/295).
Time of becoming the QurbaniWajib:Qurbani does not become Wajib if Nisab amount of wealth does have at the

day of 10 Zilhajj. Therefore, someone does not perform Qurbani if he/she receivesNesab amount of wealth
th th
somehow at the day of 11 or 12 Zilhajj. For example, when Qurbani does not become Wajib for an unmarried girl
th th
at 10 Zilhajj, however, if she is married on 11 Zilhajj and therefore she received money, gold etc. as an amount of
Nisab or more from her husband still she does not perform Qurbani thinking that the day of Qurbani has been
th
passed already. However, that thinking is wrong. The correct masala is that from the dawn of 10 Zilhajj to the
th
sunset of 12 Zilhajj, the Qurbanican be performed. If anyone receives assets equivalent or more the amount of
Nisab within these 3days, he/she has to perform Qurbani. (Nasburaa 4/212-213, BadaeusSanae 4/198, Addurrul
Mukhtar6/318,Alamgiri5/295).
Animal of Qurbani:Anas Ibn Malik (RA) reported that the Messenger (PBUH) of Allah made sacrice of two stout
rams having horns. He sacriced them with his own hand and took the name of Allah and recited Takbir. He said: I
sawhimputting hisonefootupontheirbuttocksandsaying:InthenameofAllah,andAllahisGreatest.(Agreed).
HazratZabir (RA) recited in a long Hadis; after that Prophet (PBUH) came to the place of Qurbani and streamed 63
camelsbyhisownhand.(SahiBukhari1/394,SunaneAbuDaud1/262).
Hazrat Ayesha (RA) narrated, Prophet (PBUH) performed Qurbani by cow on behalf of his wives. (Sahi Bukhari
2/834,1/231).Performing QurbanibycowisalsonarratedbyHazratZabir(RA)aswell.(SahiMuslim1/424).
Seven Partners can join in Qurbani of a cow and a camel:Zabir (RA) said: we came out by wearing Ehramfor Hajj
with Prophet (PBUH). He ordered us to join seven persons to each camel and cow for performing the Qurbani.
(SahiMuslim1/424).
In another narration Prophet (PBUH) said: acow for seven persons and a camel for seven persons for performing
Qurbani.(AbuDaud2/388).
AgeofAnimalsforQurbani:Zabir (RA) reported that the Apostle of Allah (PBUH) said: Don't sacrice but a year-old
animalexceptwhenitbecomesdifculttoyou.Thensacriceonesixmonthsoldoutoframs.(SahiMuslim2/155).
The camel for Qurbani must be at least 5years old, when cow or buffalo must be at least 2 years old. Goat, ram,
sheep must be one year-old. From the above Hadis, it is learnt that for the case of ram or sheep six months-old is
alsoallowed.
ConditionsofAnimalswhichdonotPermitforQurbani:Bara'a Ibn Azeb (RA) reported that the Apostle of Allah was
asked: What should be given up from the sacricial animals? He pointed out with his hand and said: Four
(animals): the lame animal whose lameness is open, the blind animal of one eye whose blindnessisopen,the
diseased animal whose disease is open, and the lean animal which has no marrow. People said: we also dislike to
perform Qurbani by animals with faults in teeth, ear and tail? He said: you can dislike whatever you wish, however,
do not make it haram for others. (Sahi Ibn Hibban5919. Sunane Abu Daud 2/387, SunaneNasai 2/202,
JameTirmiji1/275,Malek).
Hazrat Ali (RA) reported: The Apostle (PBUH) of Allah ordered us to examine the eye and ear (of the sacricial
animal) and not to sacrice an animal whose ear has been cut off in front portion or in back portion, or whose ear
has been silted long or round. (SunaneTirmizi 1/275, Sunane Abu Daud 2/388, SunaneNisai 2/280, SunaneIbn
Majahpp-227).
Hazrat Ali (RA) reported that the Apostle of Allah prohibited to sacrice an animal with broken horn or a slit ear.

Time of Qurbani:Bara Ibn Azib (RA) said: Rasul (PBUH) said us in his sermon, the rst job for us in this day to pray,
then make Qurbani. Therefore, who do this way his action will be like our way, and who sacrice earlier his action
does not support our way. So he prepared meat for his family (not sacriced for Allah), not for Qurbani. (Sahi
Bukhari2/158,SahiMuslim2/158,SahiIbnHibban5907).
Jundub Ibn Abdullah (RA) reported: I was present at the festival on the Day of Sacrice with the Apostle of Allah.
Before he prayed and nished it and made greeting, he saw the meat of sacricial animals. Those were
slaughtered before he nished his prayer. He said: Whoever sacrices before he prays or we pray, let him sacrice
another in its stead. And in a narration he reported: The Prophet prayed on the day of sacrice and then he
delivered sermon and then sacriced. He said: Whoever sacrices before he prays, let him sacrice another in its
place;andwhoeverhasnotsacriced,lethimsacriceinthenameofAllah.(Agreed).
Meat of Sacriced Animal:Zabir (RA) reported that Prophet (PBUH) prohibited to eat the meat of Qurbani after
3nights. Afterthat(havingrespite)said:eat,takeitinjourneyandpreserveit.(Muslim2/158).
Mother of believers, Ayesha (RA) said in an explanation that eat, preserve and distribute among poor (Sadka)
(Muslim2/158).
Performing Qurbani for Parents without performing own WajibQurbani: When parents reach to old age and stop
their income then their son performs Qurbani on behalf of them and thinks that by this way his WajibQurbani has
fullled. However, it is wrong. If the Qurbani is wajib for the son, he must have to perform his own Qurbani rst,
after that if his ability supports, he can perform Qurbani for his parents as well (Seven person can join in a cow or
camel or buffalo for Qurbani. Keeping own name, can add names of parents, brothers, sisters, wife, son, daughter,
Prophet, Murshid and so on as he wishes). However, if someone make intention for bestowing sawab to his
parents in performing his own WajibQurbani, his WajibQurbani will be accepted at the same time his parents will
getsawabaswell.
Many people join husbands name with married women. However, in the case of married or unmarried girls, her
father'snameshouldbeadded.Forexample,FatimabinteMuhammad(PBUH).
Qurbani for the leader of Combined Family:In combined family several persons are available who have their own
income and assets equivalent to Nisab, however, only the head of the family performs Qurbani, not every earning
people perform theirQurbani. That is wrong. Whether it is a combined family or individual family, every adult
person having assets equivalent to Nisab, has to perform Qurbani. The Qurbani for the leader of the combined
familyisnotsufcientforallofothermembersofthefamily.
Buying the Animal for Qurbani: Competition in buying animal with higher price or the biggest animal. Now a days,
competition is available among rich people in showing that who can spend the higher price in buying the animal for
Qurbani. Even competitions are found in buying camels from neighboring country, publicity about it in paper-
magazine etc. Sometimes, attractive animals are shown to people in the area. All of these are ignorance, because
Qurbani is not a ceremonial act, it is an Ibadat. The rst condition of Ibadat is the intention (Ekhlas), ie to perform
QurbaniisonlyforAllah's satisfaction. Ibadat will not be accepted if there is intention to show the self-superiority,
earning people's praise or applause, falselydemonstrativeattitude. However,nobodyisunknownaboutitthatas
big as or as good as be the animal of the Qurbani, higher benets (sawab) are acquired if it is for acquiring the
satisfactionofAllah(SWT)only.
Buying animal for Qurbani, afterwards taking partners:If there is intention to perform Qurbani in partner, it is better
to xup the partners before buying the animal. If it is not possible, at least during buying the animal intention must
be done that partners will be included. Later if there are some partners, no problem to include them. But
sometimes it happens that during buying the animals it is intended to perform the Qurbani alone, afterwards,
partners are necessary to be included. What will be rule in this case, many people do not know. Therefore, the
rules (masala) are explained here as: (a) The buying person is like that performing Qurbani is wajib for him, even
though there is a chance for him to take partners with him, better not to do that. If he needs to take partners, it is
better for him to donate (assadaka) that amount of money which has been receivedfrom partners. (b) The buyer of
an animal intended to perform the Qurbani alone upon whom Qurbaniwas not wajib, it is not lawful for him to invite
partners to that animal, because during buying the animal that person (upon whom Qurbani is not wajib) had not
intention to take partners in Qurbani. Therefore, he has to perform the Qurbani with that animal alone. If he has
invited others in performing Qurbani without knowing the masala (rules), it is essential for him to donate that

amount of money as sadaka. (Kazikhan 3/350-351, BadaeusSanae 4/210, Raddul Muhtar 6/317, TahtabiAladdur
4/162).
Carelessnessinselectingpartners:ItisfoundtotakepartnersinperformingQurbanitogetherwithoutexaminingthem.
Person who does not pray salat, does not perform fasting or income is haram (taking interest, bribe, LIC, having
mortgageofland,ornamentsorhavingloanofinterest)isalsotakenaspartnerinQurbani,however,for taking this
personaspartner,allother'sQurbaniwillnotcorrect.Therefore,itisnecessarytobecarefulinthisregards.
Partners less than seven:Many people think that taking partner less than seven is not possible.It is thought that
performing Qurbani must be alone or if taking partners, they must be seven. However, this thinking is wrong.
Similarly, someone thinks that the partners must be odd number. This is also wrong. The partners can be seven or
anynumberlessthanseven.
Qurbanianimal with faults:Broken horns or without horns: Many people think that animals with small broken horns
are not allowed for the Qurbani. Similarly, animals whose horns did not grown are also not allowed for the Qurbani.
This is not correct masala (rules). Correct (sahi) masala is that the animals of which horns have been broken from
the bottom for which their brains have been affected, performing Qurbani with those animals are not allowed. On
the other hand, the animals of which horns have been broken partially or have not grown at all, performing Qurbani
with those animals areallowed.(JameTirmiji 1/276, Sunane AbuDaud 388, BadaeusSanae 4/216, Raddul Muhtar
8/32,Alamgiri5/297).
Qurbani with pregnant animals: Many people think to perform Qurbani with pregnant animal is correct. However,
thisQurbaniisnotcorrect.Itisprohibited toperformQurbaniwiththisanimal.(KaziKhan3/350,Alamgiri5/302).
Mistakes related to slaughtering animals:Slaughtering the animal byaMoulovi (Islamic learned man) is thinking as
emergency.Many people think that it is important to slaughter the Qurbani animal by an Imam or Moulovi of a
masque, however, this wrong. If the performer of the Qurbani knows the system of slaughtering, it is better for him
to slaughter the animal by himself. (Musnade Ahmad Hadis 22657, Alamgiri 5/300, IlausSunan 17/271-274),
BadaeusSanae4/222).
Help from another person in slaughtering animals: In some cases, when slaughtering man needs help, butcher or
other person takes the knife and completes the remaining slaughtering. However, in that case, the second man
does not recite Bismillah. If the slaughtering of the rst man is not completed (if at least 3 of 4 canals from two
jugular veins, respiratory passage, food canal are not cut) then the second man must be needed to recite Bismillah
to complete the slaughtering. Otherwise the slaughtering will not be lawful. It will not halal to eat that meat.

Performing Qurbani at 11 or 12 Zilhajj without reason: Generally, who performs several Qurbani, it is found that

he performs one Qurbani at 10 Zilhajj and performs another Qurbani in 11 or 12 of Zilhajj. It is not right without
th
any reason. Not to perform Qurbani in 10 of Zilhajj without any reason is not good. (MuattaMalek 188,
BadaeusSanae4/198,Alamgiri5/295).
Removing the skin from the animal before becoming the animal cold: Many people start cutting vein of legs and
removing the skin from the animal before it is becoming cold. The animal feels pain in it. This is makruh. Giving
painmorethannecessarytotheanimalissin.(JameTirmizi 1/260,SunaneAbuDaud2/33,BadaeusSanae4/223,
Alamgiri5/287)
Distribution and donation of meats: Not to weight the meat; it is not right to distribute the meats by assuming
amongpartners.(KaziKhan3/351,AddurrulMukhtar6/317).
Thinking narrowness of weighting the meat: Many people dislike to distribute the meat by weighting. They look
askance at this weighting by telling narrowness or excessiveness. However, this is the order by Shariah. Making
suchcommentswithout knowledgeisnotright.
Thinking emergency to divide in three:It is thought important to divide whole meat in three parts, out of which one
part thinks for own, one part for relatives, neighbors, and one part for poor. However, to divide in this way is not
emergency, but good. If anyone makes mistake in it, no sin in it. Someone, keeps the whole meats in refrigerator
without donating.Itisalsonotgood.(SuraHajj36,BadaeusSanae4/224,Alamgiri5/300).
Distributing meats of Qurbani to nonbelievers: Many people think that the distribution of Qurbani-meat to
nonbelievers is not allowable. However, it is not correct. Donating meats of Qurbani to nonbelievers is allowable.

(IlausSunan17/283,Alamgiri5/300).
Giving meats of Qurbani to employees and servants:Many people think that giving or eating the meats of Qurbani
to employees and servants are unlawful. However, there is no problem if meats of Qurbani are given to them as
gifts not as remunerations. Like relatives and neighbors, meats of Qurbani should be given to them. However, their
remunerationsshouldbegivenseparately.
Selling the Fats: In many places, fats of Qurbani are selling. However, selling of Qurbani meats, fats etc. are
unlawful.Ifanyonedoesthis,thetotalsellingmoneyshouldbedonatedtopoorandbeggars.
Several further confusions; slaughtering other animals in the days of Qurbani:Many people think that in the days of
Qurbani other animals cannot be slaughtered. This a wrong thinking. However, in intention of Qurbani,
slaughtering of ducks, chickens etc. (for which performing Qurbani is not lawful) both for rich or poor people are
unlawful. For the purpose of eating meats, slaughtering of these animals are lawful. (Khulasatul Fatwa 4/314,
AddurulMukhtar6/313,Alamgiri5/300).
Due (not performed) Qurbani:Some people perform due Qurbani in the following year. However, in this way the
Qurbani of last year can be recovered as Kaza. In this regard the correct rule is; for the due Qurbani of every past
year, equivalent money for an appropriate goat/lamb should be donated as Sadaka. (Khulasatul Fatwa 4/311,
MabsuteSarakhsi 12/14, BadaeusSanae 4/202, Addurul Mukhtar 6/320-329, FahulQadir 8/432, MultakalAbhur
4/170).
Qurbani for Haji Saheb: Many Hajis arrange their Qurbaniat their own country thinking it is important. In this regard
the correct rule (masala) is that those Hajis who are in journey in the days of Qurbani, performing general Qurbani
is not essential for them. However, if anyone wants to perform Qurbani as nafal, he can perform and it is good. On
the other hand, if any Haji stays at Makkah making intention to stay for 15 days before Hajj, therefore, since he
becomes the resident (Mukim) at the day Qurbani, to perform Qurbanifor him is Wajib if he has the ability. He can
perform this general Qurbani at his own country as well. It is mentionable that the general Qurbani indicates the
Qurbaniwhich all capable Muslims perform. However, the Qurbani in Hajj is already known to all. In the Hajj of
Tamattu and Keran, Qurbani is Wajib and in the Hajj of Ifrad, performing Qurbani is Nafal. (Kazi Khan 3/344,
BadaeusSanae4/195,AddurrulKukhtar6/315).
Selling the skin before Qurbani: Sometimes the skin of the animal for Qurbani is sold before slaughtering the
animal(performing theQurbani)by the skin broker's insistence. Even price is taken as well. Thisisunlawful.
Before removing the skin, selling the skin is not allowed. Therefore, before slaughtering the Qurbani animal,
promisecanbedone,however,sellingisprohibited.(Alamgiri3/128,AddurrulKukhtar5/63).
QurbaniNiyat(Intention ofQurbani in Arabic): ALLAHUMMA MINKA O ELAIKA INNA SALATI ONUSUKI OMAHYA
IYA OMAMATI LILLAHI RABBIL A'LAMIN, LASHARIKALAHU O BEZALEKA UMERTU O ANA MINAL MUSLEMIN
ALLAHUMMA TAKABBAL MIN (FOLA NEBNE FOLA NIN). BISMILLAHE ALLAHO AKBAR. (in the place of
FOLA NEBNE, Qurbani performer's name will be used; in the place of FOLA NIN, father's name ofQurbani
performerwillbeused. For male, “Ibne” will be used; for female, “Binte” will be used. For example: Hazrat
Muhammad(PBUH)IbneHazratAbdulla;HazratFatimaBinteMuhammad(PBUH).)
AqikahNiyat (Intention of Aqikah in Arabic): ALLAHUMMA HAZIHI AQIKATU IBNI FULANIN DAMUHA BIDAMIHI
WA LAHMUHA BILAHMIHI WAAZMUHA BIAZMIHI WA ZILDUHA BIZILDIHI WA SHA-ORUHA BISHA-RIHI
ALLAHUMMAZ ALHA FIDAAN LIIBNI MINANNARI BISMILLAHI ALLAHU AKBAR. (In the case of slaughtering the
Aqikahanimalforownson,theson's name will be pronounced in the case of “FULAN”. For thecaseofdaughter,
insteadof“IBNI”, “IBNATI”willbeusedandintheplaceofFULANIN,ownnamewillbepronounced.
Again,iftheAqikahisforothers,in the case of son, by reciting “IBNUHU” his name will be pronounced and in the
caseofdaughter,byreciting “IBNATUHU”theirfather'snamewillbepronounced.)

The Holy Qurbani Message from Sufi Azangachi Saheb.

  • 1. Like all other rituals, Eid is also instructed by Allah (SWT) to perform. Ibn Omar (RA) narrated in a Hadis that Rasul (PBUH)said: “I am ordered to observe Eid in the day of Qurbani”. Allah(SWT)hasdetermineditforthisUmmah. One Sahabi asks to the Prophet (PBUH), O Rasul (PBUH), if I have only one Maniha for drinking milk, should I make it Qurbani? Prophet (SWT) replied no. However, you will cut your hair, nail, moustache and clean the hair under the navel.ThatwillbecountedfullQurbanitoAllah(SWT)foryou.(SunaneAbuDaud2/385,SunaneNasai2/179) Meaning (importance) of Qurbani:Zaed Ibn Arqam (RA) reported that the companions of the Prophet (PBUH) asked: O Messenger of Allah! what is this sacrice? He said: The way of your forefather Abraham (PBUH). They said: What is for us therein, O Messenger of Allah? He said: There is one reward for every hair. They asked: For wool,OMessengerofAllah?Hesaid:Thereisonerewardforeverystrandofwool.(Ahmad,IbnMajah). Ayesha (RA) reported that the Apostle of Allah (PBUH) said: The son of Adam does not do anything of the actions on the day of sacrice which is more pleasing to Allah than the shedding of blood, and he will come on the Resurrection Day with its horns, hairs and hoops: and the blood certainly falls in a place near Allah before it falls downontheground.Somakeyourselfpuriedtherewith. (Tirmizi, IbnMajah) WhatreachestoAllah(SWT):Allah (SWT) says in holy Quran, “It is not their meat nor their blood, that reaches Allah:itisyourpietyThatreachesHim”(SuraHajj,V.37). Taqwa and obedience to Allah (SWT) is the main objective of the Ibadat. Qurbani is a great Ibadat. However, esh and meat do not reach to Allah (SWT) and that is not the purpose of Qurbani as well. The main purpose ot is to recite Allah's name upon the animal during Qurbai and obeying the Orders of the Lord with sincerity.Ibadatwithout sincerity and devotion is similar to the lifeless structure. Therefore, Sariah supported structure for Ibadat is also important,because,AllahdenedthesestructuresforobservingHisordersaccurately. Qurbani creates an inherent intention by establishing the knife ofcourage and resistance over the diseases of the heartincluding hatred,jealousy,proudness,greediness,malice,worldlinessetc. The way as Prophet (PBUH) performed the Qurbani:Zaber (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah slaughtered on the day of sacrice two horned white and black castrahed rams. When he placed them facing the Qibla, he said: I turned my face towards One who created the heavens and the earth upon the religion of Abraham, being upright and I am not one of the polytheists. My prayer, my sacrice, my life and my death are all for Allah, the Lord of the worlds. There is no partner for Him, and I have been ordered with that, and I am one of the Muslims. O Allah, it is Thine and for Thee, from Muhammad and his people: In the name of Allah, Allah is the greatest. After then he slaughtered.(Ahmad,AbuDaud,IbnMajah). Abdullah Ibn Omar (RA) reported that the Apostle of Allah used to slaughter and sacrice at the praying place. (Bukhari). Rules are that cows, goats and rams are slaughtered, however, camels are nahared (streamed). Prophet (PBUH) did that way. HazratShaddadIbnAos (RA) reported that Rasul (PBUH) says, Allah (SWT) makes compulsory in keeping kindness above all. Therefore, when you kill then kill in best way, when you slaughter, then slaughter in the best way. Everybody sharpen his knife and keep his animal in peace.(Muslim 2/152, Sunane Abu Daud2/389,SunaneNasai2/182,SunaneTirmizi 1/260,SunaneIbnMajah2/229). MistakesthataredonefrequentlyinQurbani:TobeperfectandacceptedofIbadat,twoconditionsarenecessary.First oneistomakecorrectandaccurateNiah(intention)withsincerityandthesecondoneistoperformIbadatfallowing therulesandregulationsaccordingtoSariah.Similarly,twoconditionsareapplicableinthecaseofQurbani.Therefore, ifanyoneperformsNiahperfectly,however,hedoesnotconducttheactivityaccordingtotheSharia,hisactionswill notbecountedasIbadat.AslikeastheIbadatdoesnotcountiftheNiahiswrong.Allah(SWT)says, “Their esh and theirbloodwillnotreachAllah,butself-denyingpracticewillreachHim(SuraHajj,V.37)”. Here the explanation of the rst condition has come. However, the explanation of the second condition is available intheChapterofQurbaniinHadisandFiqahbooksbasedonQuranandSunnah. Since the rst of the two conditions are related to the heart, therefore, the mistake of it does not visible to us. The secondconditionisrelatedtotheactions,therefore,itsindiscipline andmistakescanberealizedeasily. QURBANI (the Sacrice of I'd-ul-Azha)- be performed to attain Allah's Satisfaction only 1

The major mistakes that frequently happen in our society during making Qurbani are discussingin following sectionsinshaallah, so that we are not involved in those mistakes in coming Qurbani as well as in future. May we become fortunate in getting virtues and requitals by observing this Ibadat according to the instructions of Allah (SWT)andHisRasul(PBUH)-Amin. Confusion about becoming the QurbaniWajib or not: Nesab of Qurbani: Many people think that same conditions are necessary for being the QurbaniWajib as the conditions necessary of having money, gold, silver for being the ZakatFarz.Therefore, manypeopleofwealthy familydonotperformQurbani. Thisisawrong idea. Correct masala (proposition) is that if an adult person has money or assets including land or luxury goods or excess furniture whose values are more than the cost of 52 tola silver at the day of Qurbani, that parson is eligible for performing Qurbani, however, for the Zakat all of these are not counted. Therefore, eventhough sufcient money, gold, business assets etc. are not available, costs of excess wealth, furniture (more than necessary)arealso counted for theQurbanitobeWajib.(BadaeusSanae4/198,AddurrulMukhtar6/318,Alamgiri5/295). Time of becoming the QurbaniWajib:Qurbani does not become Wajib if Nisab amount of wealth does have at the th day of 10 Zilhajj. Therefore, someone does not perform Qurbani if he/she receivesNesab amount of wealth th th somehow at the day of 11 or 12 Zilhajj. For example, when Qurbani does not become Wajib for an unmarried girl th th at 10 Zilhajj, however, if she is married on 11 Zilhajj and therefore she received money, gold etc. as an amount of Nisab or more from her husband still she does not perform Qurbani thinking that the day of Qurbani has been th passed already. However, that thinking is wrong. The correct masala is that from the dawn of 10 Zilhajj to the th sunset of 12 Zilhajj, the Qurbanican be performed. If anyone receives assets equivalent or more the amount of Nisab within these 3days, he/she has to perform Qurbani. (Nasburaa 4/212-213, BadaeusSanae 4/198, Addurrul Mukhtar6/318,Alamgiri5/295). Animal of Qurbani:Anas Ibn Malik (RA) reported that the Messenger (PBUH) of Allah made sacrice of two stout rams having horns. He sacriced them with his own hand and took the name of Allah and recited Takbir. He said: I sawhimputting hisonefootupontheirbuttocksandsaying:InthenameofAllah,andAllahisGreatest.(Agreed). HazratZabir (RA) recited in a long Hadis; after that Prophet (PBUH) came to the place of Qurbani and streamed 63 camelsbyhisownhand.(SahiBukhari1/394,SunaneAbuDaud1/262). Hazrat Ayesha (RA) narrated, Prophet (PBUH) performed Qurbani by cow on behalf of his wives. (Sahi Bukhari 2/834,1/231).Performing QurbanibycowisalsonarratedbyHazratZabir(RA)aswell.(SahiMuslim1/424). Seven Partners can join in Qurbani of a cow and a camel:Zabir (RA) said: we came out by wearing Ehramfor Hajj with Prophet (PBUH). He ordered us to join seven persons to each camel and cow for performing the Qurbani. (SahiMuslim1/424). In another narration Prophet (PBUH) said: acow for seven persons and a camel for seven persons for performing Qurbani.(AbuDaud2/388). AgeofAnimalsforQurbani:Zabir (RA) reported that the Apostle of Allah (PBUH) said: Don't sacrice but a year-old animalexceptwhenitbecomesdifculttoyou.Thensacriceonesixmonthsoldoutoframs.(SahiMuslim2/155). The camel for Qurbani must be at least 5years old, when cow or buffalo must be at least 2 years old. Goat, ram, sheep must be one year-old. From the above Hadis, it is learnt that for the case of ram or sheep six months-old is alsoallowed. ConditionsofAnimalswhichdonotPermitforQurbani:Bara'a Ibn Azeb (RA) reported that the Apostle of Allah was asked: What should be given up from the sacricial animals? He pointed out with his hand and said: Four (animals): the lame animal whose lameness is open, the blind animal of one eye whose blindnessisopen,the diseased animal whose disease is open, and the lean animal which has no marrow. People said: we also dislike to perform Qurbani by animals with faults in teeth, ear and tail? He said: you can dislike whatever you wish, however, do not make it haram for others. (Sahi Ibn Hibban5919. Sunane Abu Daud 2/387, SunaneNasai 2/202, JameTirmiji1/275,Malek). Hazrat Ali (RA) reported: The Apostle (PBUH) of Allah ordered us to examine the eye and ear (of the sacricial animal) and not to sacrice an animal whose ear has been cut off in front portion or in back portion, or whose ear has been silted long or round. (SunaneTirmizi 1/275, Sunane Abu Daud 2/388, SunaneNisai 2/280, SunaneIbn Majahpp-227). Hazrat Ali (RA) reported that the Apostle of Allah prohibited to sacrice an animal with broken horn or a slit ear. 2
  • 3. (SunaneIbnMajahpp-227). Time of Qurbani:Bara Ibn Azib (RA) said: Rasul (PBUH) said us in his sermon, the rst job for us in this day to pray, then make Qurbani. Therefore, who do this way his action will be like our way, and who sacrice earlier his action does not support our way. So he prepared meat for his family (not sacriced for Allah), not for Qurbani. (Sahi Bukhari2/158,SahiMuslim2/158,SahiIbnHibban5907). Jundub Ibn Abdullah (RA) reported: I was present at the festival on the Day of Sacrice with the Apostle of Allah. Before he prayed and nished it and made greeting, he saw the meat of sacricial animals. Those were slaughtered before he nished his prayer. He said: Whoever sacrices before he prays or we pray, let him sacrice another in its stead. And in a narration he reported: The Prophet prayed on the day of sacrice and then he delivered sermon and then sacriced. He said: Whoever sacrices before he prays, let him sacrice another in its place;andwhoeverhasnotsacriced,lethimsacriceinthenameofAllah.(Agreed). Meat of Sacriced Animal:Zabir (RA) reported that Prophet (PBUH) prohibited to eat the meat of Qurbani after 3nights. Afterthat(havingrespite)said:eat,takeitinjourneyandpreserveit.(Muslim2/158). Mother of believers, Ayesha (RA) said in an explanation that eat, preserve and distribute among poor (Sadka) (Muslim2/158). Performing Qurbani for Parents without performing own WajibQurbani: When parents reach to old age and stop their income then their son performs Qurbani on behalf of them and thinks that by this way his WajibQurbani has fullled. However, it is wrong. If the Qurbani is wajib for the son, he must have to perform his own Qurbani rst, after that if his ability supports, he can perform Qurbani for his parents as well (Seven person can join in a cow or camel or buffalo for Qurbani. Keeping own name, can add names of parents, brothers, sisters, wife, son, daughter, Prophet, Murshid and so on as he wishes). However, if someone make intention for bestowing sawab to his parents in performing his own WajibQurbani, his WajibQurbani will be accepted at the same time his parents will getsawabaswell. Many people join husbands name with married women. However, in the case of married or unmarried girls, her father'snameshouldbeadded.Forexample,FatimabinteMuhammad(PBUH). Qurbani for the leader of Combined Family:In combined family several persons are available who have their own income and assets equivalent to Nisab, however, only the head of the family performs Qurbani, not every earning people perform theirQurbani. That is wrong. Whether it is a combined family or individual family, every adult person having assets equivalent to Nisab, has to perform Qurbani. The Qurbani for the leader of the combined familyisnotsufcientforallofothermembersofthefamily. Buying the Animal for Qurbani: Competition in buying animal with higher price or the biggest animal. Now a days, competition is available among rich people in showing that who can spend the higher price in buying the animal for Qurbani. Even competitions are found in buying camels from neighboring country, publicity about it in paper- magazine etc. Sometimes, attractive animals are shown to people in the area. All of these are ignorance, because Qurbani is not a ceremonial act, it is an Ibadat. The rst condition of Ibadat is the intention (Ekhlas), ie to perform QurbaniisonlyforAllah's satisfaction. Ibadat will not be accepted if there is intention to show the self-superiority, earning people's praise or applause, falselydemonstrativeattitude. However,nobodyisunknownaboutitthatas big as or as good as be the animal of the Qurbani, higher benets (sawab) are acquired if it is for acquiring the satisfactionofAllah(SWT)only. Buying animal for Qurbani, afterwards taking partners:If there is intention to perform Qurbani in partner, it is better to xup the partners before buying the animal. If it is not possible, at least during buying the animal intention must be done that partners will be included. Later if there are some partners, no problem to include them. But sometimes it happens that during buying the animals it is intended to perform the Qurbani alone, afterwards, partners are necessary to be included. What will be rule in this case, many people do not know. Therefore, the rules (masala) are explained here as: (a) The buying person is like that performing Qurbani is wajib for him, even though there is a chance for him to take partners with him, better not to do that. If he needs to take partners, it is better for him to donate (assadaka) that amount of money which has been receivedfrom partners. (b) The buyer of an animal intended to perform the Qurbani alone upon whom Qurbaniwas not wajib, it is not lawful for him to invite partners to that animal, because during buying the animal that person (upon whom Qurbani is not wajib) had not intention to take partners in Qurbani. Therefore, he has to perform the Qurbani with that animal alone. If he has invited others in performing Qurbani without knowing the masala (rules), it is essential for him to donate that 3
  • 4. amount of money as sadaka. (Kazikhan 3/350-351, BadaeusSanae 4/210, Raddul Muhtar 6/317, TahtabiAladdur 4/162). Carelessnessinselectingpartners:ItisfoundtotakepartnersinperformingQurbanitogetherwithoutexaminingthem. Person who does not pray salat, does not perform fasting or income is haram (taking interest, bribe, LIC, having mortgageofland,ornamentsorhavingloanofinterest)isalsotakenaspartnerinQurbani,however,for taking this personaspartner,allother'sQurbaniwillnotcorrect.Therefore,itisnecessarytobecarefulinthisregards. Partners less than seven:Many people think that taking partner less than seven is not possible.It is thought that performing Qurbani must be alone or if taking partners, they must be seven. However, this thinking is wrong. Similarly, someone thinks that the partners must be odd number. This is also wrong. The partners can be seven or anynumberlessthanseven. Qurbanianimal with faults:Broken horns or without horns: Many people think that animals with small broken horns are not allowed for the Qurbani. Similarly, animals whose horns did not grown are also not allowed for the Qurbani. This is not correct masala (rules). Correct (sahi) masala is that the animals of which horns have been broken from the bottom for which their brains have been affected, performing Qurbani with those animals are not allowed. On the other hand, the animals of which horns have been broken partially or have not grown at all, performing Qurbani with those animals areallowed.(JameTirmiji 1/276, Sunane AbuDaud 388, BadaeusSanae 4/216, Raddul Muhtar 8/32,Alamgiri5/297). Qurbani with pregnant animals: Many people think to perform Qurbani with pregnant animal is correct. However, thisQurbaniisnotcorrect.Itisprohibited toperformQurbaniwiththisanimal.(KaziKhan3/350,Alamgiri5/302). Mistakes related to slaughtering animals:Slaughtering the animal byaMoulovi (Islamic learned man) is thinking as emergency.Many people think that it is important to slaughter the Qurbani animal by an Imam or Moulovi of a masque, however, this wrong. If the performer of the Qurbani knows the system of slaughtering, it is better for him to slaughter the animal by himself. (Musnade Ahmad Hadis 22657, Alamgiri 5/300, IlausSunan 17/271-274), BadaeusSanae4/222). Help from another person in slaughtering animals: In some cases, when slaughtering man needs help, butcher or other person takes the knife and completes the remaining slaughtering. However, in that case, the second man does not recite Bismillah. If the slaughtering of the rst man is not completed (if at least 3 of 4 canals from two jugular veins, respiratory passage, food canal are not cut) then the second man must be needed to recite Bismillah to complete the slaughtering. Otherwise the slaughtering will not be lawful. It will not halal to eat that meat. (RaddulMohtar6/334). th th Performing Qurbani at 11 or 12 Zilhajj without reason: Generally, who performs several Qurbani, it is found that th th th he performs one Qurbani at 10 Zilhajj and performs another Qurbani in 11 or 12 of Zilhajj. It is not right without th any reason. Not to perform Qurbani in 10 of Zilhajj without any reason is not good. (MuattaMalek 188, BadaeusSanae4/198,Alamgiri5/295). Removing the skin from the animal before becoming the animal cold: Many people start cutting vein of legs and removing the skin from the animal before it is becoming cold. The animal feels pain in it. This is makruh. Giving painmorethannecessarytotheanimalissin.(JameTirmizi 1/260,SunaneAbuDaud2/33,BadaeusSanae4/223, Alamgiri5/287) Distribution and donation of meats: Not to weight the meat; it is not right to distribute the meats by assuming amongpartners.(KaziKhan3/351,AddurrulMukhtar6/317). Thinking narrowness of weighting the meat: Many people dislike to distribute the meat by weighting. They look askance at this weighting by telling narrowness or excessiveness. However, this is the order by Shariah. Making suchcommentswithout knowledgeisnotright. Thinking emergency to divide in three:It is thought important to divide whole meat in three parts, out of which one part thinks for own, one part for relatives, neighbors, and one part for poor. However, to divide in this way is not emergency, but good. If anyone makes mistake in it, no sin in it. Someone, keeps the whole meats in refrigerator without donating.Itisalsonotgood.(SuraHajj36,BadaeusSanae4/224,Alamgiri5/300). Distributing meats of Qurbani to nonbelievers: Many people think that the distribution of Qurbani-meat to nonbelievers is not allowable. However, it is not correct. Donating meats of Qurbani to nonbelievers is allowable. 4
  • 5. (IlausSunan17/283,Alamgiri5/300). Giving meats of Qurbani to employees and servants:Many people think that giving or eating the meats of Qurbani to employees and servants are unlawful. However, there is no problem if meats of Qurbani are given to them as gifts not as remunerations. Like relatives and neighbors, meats of Qurbani should be given to them. However, their remunerationsshouldbegivenseparately. Selling the Fats: In many places, fats of Qurbani are selling. However, selling of Qurbani meats, fats etc. are unlawful.Ifanyonedoesthis,thetotalsellingmoneyshouldbedonatedtopoorandbeggars. Several further confusions; slaughtering other animals in the days of Qurbani:Many people think that in the days of Qurbani other animals cannot be slaughtered. This a wrong thinking. However, in intention of Qurbani, slaughtering of ducks, chickens etc. (for which performing Qurbani is not lawful) both for rich or poor people are unlawful. For the purpose of eating meats, slaughtering of these animals are lawful. (Khulasatul Fatwa 4/314, AddurulMukhtar6/313,Alamgiri5/300). Due (not performed) Qurbani:Some people perform due Qurbani in the following year. However, in this way the Qurbani of last year can be recovered as Kaza. In this regard the correct rule is; for the due Qurbani of every past year, equivalent money for an appropriate goat/lamb should be donated as Sadaka. (Khulasatul Fatwa 4/311, MabsuteSarakhsi 12/14, BadaeusSanae 4/202, Addurul Mukhtar 6/320-329, FahulQadir 8/432, MultakalAbhur 4/170). Qurbani for Haji Saheb: Many Hajis arrange their Qurbaniat their own country thinking it is important. In this regard the correct rule (masala) is that those Hajis who are in journey in the days of Qurbani, performing general Qurbani is not essential for them. However, if anyone wants to perform Qurbani as nafal, he can perform and it is good. On the other hand, if any Haji stays at Makkah making intention to stay for 15 days before Hajj, therefore, since he becomes the resident (Mukim) at the day Qurbani, to perform Qurbanifor him is Wajib if he has the ability. He can perform this general Qurbani at his own country as well. It is mentionable that the general Qurbani indicates the Qurbaniwhich all capable Muslims perform. However, the Qurbani in Hajj is already known to all. In the Hajj of Tamattu and Keran, Qurbani is Wajib and in the Hajj of Ifrad, performing Qurbani is Nafal. (Kazi Khan 3/344, BadaeusSanae4/195,AddurrulKukhtar6/315). Selling the skin before Qurbani: Sometimes the skin of the animal for Qurbani is sold before slaughtering the animal(performing theQurbani)by the skin broker's insistence. Even price is taken as well. Thisisunlawful. Before removing the skin, selling the skin is not allowed. Therefore, before slaughtering the Qurbani animal, promisecanbedone,however,sellingisprohibited.(Alamgiri3/128,AddurrulKukhtar5/63). QurbaniNiyat(Intention ofQurbani in Arabic): ALLAHUMMA MINKA O ELAIKA INNA SALATI ONUSUKI OMAHYA IYA OMAMATI LILLAHI RABBIL A'LAMIN, LASHARIKALAHU O BEZALEKA UMERTU O ANA MINAL MUSLEMIN ALLAHUMMA TAKABBAL MIN (FOLA NEBNE FOLA NIN). BISMILLAHE ALLAHO AKBAR. (in the place of FOLA NEBNE, Qurbani performer's name will be used; in the place of FOLA NIN, father's name ofQurbani performerwillbeused. For male, “Ibne” will be used; for female, “Binte” will be used. For example: Hazrat Muhammad(PBUH)IbneHazratAbdulla;HazratFatimaBinteMuhammad(PBUH).) AqikahNiyat (Intention of Aqikah in Arabic): ALLAHUMMA HAZIHI AQIKATU IBNI FULANIN DAMUHA BIDAMIHI WA LAHMUHA BILAHMIHI WAAZMUHA BIAZMIHI WA ZILDUHA BIZILDIHI WA SHA-ORUHA BISHA-RIHI ALLAHUMMAZ ALHA FIDAAN LIIBNI MINANNARI BISMILLAHI ALLAHU AKBAR. (In the case of slaughtering the Aqikahanimalforownson,theson's name will be pronounced in the case of “FULAN”. For thecaseofdaughter, insteadof“IBNI”, “IBNATI”willbeusedandintheplaceofFULANIN,ownnamewillbepronounced. Again,iftheAqikahisforothers,in the case of son, by reciting “IBNUHU” his name will be pronounced and in the caseofdaughter,byreciting “IBNATUHU”theirfather'snamewillbepronounced.) 5
