2. History
The history of geography includes many histories
of geography which have differed over time
and between different cultural and political groups.
In more recent developments, geography has
become a distinct academic discipline.
'Geography' derives from the Greek γεωγραφία – geographia, a
literal translation of which would be "to describe or write about the
Earth". The first person to use the word "geography" was
Eratosthenes (276–194 BC). However, there is evidence for
recognizable practices of geography, such as cartography (or
map-making) prior to the use of the term geography.
5. Geographical traditions
Geographers approach the general study of the environment and the
societies that inhabit it from different traditions, in some
complementary points and in other contradictory ones. These are:
•Geographers close to the physical tradition study
various aspects of the physical environment
(relief, climate, vegetation ...).
•Those closest to the chorological tradition study
territorial systems, whether these are
natural spaces (natural systems / natural regions)
or social (human regions / social spaces).
6. • Those close to the ecological tradition study the interactions
between human groups and the physical environment (and some
also built).
• Those who opt instead for the landscape tradition, concentrate on
the study of natural landscapes and cultural or human landscapes.
• Geographers who favor the spatial tradition study the location and
distribution of natural and cultural phenomena.
• Finally, the geographers closest to the social tradition study
societies and the media they inhabit.
7. -The location: It consists of locating the geographical fact, also allows us to
identify the geographical phenomenon. It was supported by Federico Ratzel.
-The comparison: This principle explains the relationship between an event
and a geographical phenomenon. It was studied by Carl Ritter.
-The explanation: Allows in the form of research to indicate what happened,
the phenomenon is explained based on checks. It was supported by
Alexander von Humboldt.
-The one of the description: It allows to decipher and to inquire about the
geographical fact, analyzing its causality. It was supported by Vidal de la
Plaza.
-The one of the geographic observation: It allows us the visualization of
the geographic phenomena taking as reference that they originate in the
surface or in the sidereal space.
8. Disciplines of Geography
Geography is divided into two main branches:
systematic or general geography and regional
geography. It can be said that the general geography
is analytical, since it studies the physical and human
facts individually, while the regional geography is
synthetic and deals with the particular territorial
systems.
9. General Geography
Geography presents a set of diverse types of sub
disciplines configured around its own object, with strong
links with their respective auxiliary sciences and with
varying degrees of communication among them. It is
subdivided into two main branches:
physical geography and human geography.

Básicamente, no
