3. INTRODUCTION
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious
disease caused by severe acute respiratory
syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The
disease was first identified in December 2019
in Wuhan, the capital of China's Hubei province, and
has since spread globally, resulting in the
ongoing 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic.
The first confirmed case of what was then an
unknown coronavirus was traced back to November
2019 in Hubei.
4. CAUSE
• Severe acute respiratory syndrome
coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)
It is the virus strain that causes coronavirus disease
2019 (COVID-19), a respiratory illness. It is colloquially
known as the coronavirus, and was previously referred to by
its provisional name 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)
6. MODE OF TRANSMISSION
1. DIRECT/CLOSE CONTACT – touching & shaking hands with a
person who has the virus can pass it between individuals.
2. DROPLET (AIR BORNE) – coughing & sneezing without covering
the mouth
3. FOMITES BORNE – making contact with a surface or object that
has the virus and then touching the nose, eyes, or mouth can
spread it
7. INCUBATION PERIOD
The incubation period of the virus is the time
between the exposure and the display of
symptoms. Current information suggests that
the incubation period ranges from 1 to 12.5 days
(with median estimates of 5 to 6 days), but can
be as long as 14 days

9. CONT….
According to researchers in China, these were the
most common symptoms among people who had
COVID-19:
• Fever 83%-99%
• Cough 59%-82%
• Fatigue 44%-70%
• Lack of appetite 40%-84%
• Shortness of breath 31%-40%
• Mucus/phlegm 28%-33%
• Body aches 11%-35%
10. DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION
Diagnosis may be difficult with only a physical examination because
mild cases of COVID-19 may appear similar to the flu or a bad
cold. A laboratory test can confirm the diagnosis.
• RT-PCR
• ISOTHERMAL AMPLIFICATION ASSAYS
• SEROLOGY
• MEDICAL IMAGING
11. PREVENTION
1. FREQUENTLY HAND WASHING WITH SOAP & WATER
2. TREAT YOUR HANDS WITH ANTISEPTIC
3. KEEP ONE METER DISTANCE
4. WEAR FACE MASK
5. STAY AT HOME DURING PERIODS OF MASS ILLNESS
6. USE TISSUE WHEN COUGH AND SNEEZE
7. DON’T TOUCH EYES & NOSE WITH DIRTY HANDS
8. AVOID MASS EVENTS
13. TREATMENT
Currently, no antiviral medication is recommended to treat COVID-19, and
no cure is available for COVID-19. Antibiotics aren't effective against
viral infections such as COVID-19. Ongoing research is studying
various drugs that may be effective for treating severe COVID-19.
Treatment is directed at relieving symptoms and may include:
Pain relievers (ibuprofen or acetaminophen)
Cough syrup or medication
Rest
Fluid intake- drinking plenty of water
