3. Brief explanation
The Amatller is the second
most important Modernist
building in Passeig de Gràcia,
Barcelona, designed by the
architect Josep Puig i
Cadafalch between 1898 and
1900.
The building was
commissioned by the
chocolate industry owner,
Antonio Puig Amatller. The
façade reminds us the Nordic
reminiscent of a classic
chocolate bar
The sculpture was made by
Eusebi Arnau, but Alfons
Jujol collaborated too.
The main floor is an
example of the
ornamental richness and
atmosphere of that golden
opulent bourgeoisie who
lived in this district.
4. Brief explanation
With a flat facade, a central
courtyard and a staircase that
leads to the bedrooms.
In the front, you can see the two
asymmetrical doors and the
statue of Saint George killing the
dragon, by Eusebi Arnau.
The Germanic element is the
bold ridged cornice,
highlighted with ceramic
tiles. You can visit the
caretaker’s office, which has
survived intact and contains
one of the finest stained-glass
windows . On the ground
floor there is a gallery staging
temporary exhibitions.
