Secondary research
1. Secondary research- research into a potential target audience
The magazine I’m looking at is Top of the Pops. I got this from http://isabel-
media.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/kerrang-reader-profile.html
In this reader profile it discusses everything about the magazine I’m looking at which
is top of the pops. It tells you the price which is £2.99, the frequency that a new copy
is brought out which is every 4 weeks. Something interesting it tells you is the
percentage of boys and girls who buy the magazine. Only 15% for buys but 87% for
girls. So we can see from this that the magazine is mainly aimed at girls which you
can tell from the cover and content as it’s got a lot of pink and has girly topics.
The age range of people that buy it are around 11-15. This is because the content is
aimed at this age range. Some of the content inside would not appeal to a young girl
around age 4-7 because they might not understand or be interested in the types of
things girls a lot older than them would be.
2. This is another reader profile for a magazine called NME. I got this from the website
http://www.slideshare.net/salesian2012as/magazine-reader-profiles
This magazine is very different to the last one I looked at. From the statistics I can see
that this magazine definitely has a target audience of majority male. the male
percentage is 70% and the female percentage is only 30%. Its again down the
content inside, its mainly aimed at male readers. Not that certain female readers
won’t buy it as anyone can buy it, it just appeals more to men. The median age for
people who read this magazine is 25, again not saying that people way under or over
don’t read this magazine but this is just an average age of the biggest age group that
buy it.
The response and feedback readers have to say about the magazine is great. One of
the things someone said was ‘I can trust it, it’s full of facts that we should all know
but don’t BUT we do now thanks to NME’. From this response we can see that its
readers have very positive and good things to say about the magazine and its loyal to
its customers.
3. How will this research effect my ideas?
By looking into this it has definitely helped me realise what type of things I need to
include in my magazine. I need to make sure that I know what my target audience is
in order to know what to include within it. I need to make sure that the images
include will appeal to my target audience by using artists and products they will
know and be interested in. I also need to make sure that the content and articles I
include will appeal to my target audience as I need to keep them interested and put
things in that they will like. And finally I need to make sure any offers or competitions
will be completely suitable and appeal most to my target audience.
My Target Audience
Percentage of girls 86%
Percentage of boys 16%
Price on cover £2.99
Median age 11
Frequency 3 weekly
I am targeting this group because my doing a pop magazine aimed at younger
children. The type of pop magazine I’m creating will be mainly aimed at girls although
some boys may be interested in it too. The price is £2.99 so its affordable for young
children. I will include content that will appeal to this target audience so that’s why
these are my statistics.
