Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new
creature: old things are passed away; behold, all
things are become new.
And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us
to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the
ministry of reconciliation;
To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the
world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses
unto them; and hath committed unto us the word
of reconciliation.
Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as
though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in
Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew
no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of
God in him.
2 Corinthians 5:17-21, KJV
WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?
I want you to know that God’s deepest
desire is to have an intimate love
relationship with His creation, you! I also
want you to know beyond the shadow of a
doubt that God’s gift of eternal life,
salvation, is absolutely free! Ephesians
2:8-9 says this: “For by grace are ye saved

through faith; and that not of yourselves: it
is the gift of God…”
Do you truly believe that God’s gift of
salvation is free, or do you, deep in your
heart, believe that you have to be good
enough to get into heaven? Do you feel
that something in your past or present
“disqualifies” you from being saved?
Absolutely not! Acts 16:31 says: “Believe
on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be
saved.” If you believe that Jesus was the
Son of God and that He died on the cross
for your sins, then you shall be saved. That
is all that is required! I want you to believe
that and hold onto that truth with all of
your heart.
God loves you and isn’t concerned
with what you’ve done or where you’ve
been. His only concern is that He loves
you and that He wants you to return His
love by accepting His Son, Jesus, as your
Savior. That’s the truth. If you want to be
saved, or if you simply want the
reassurance that you are saved, ask Jesus
into your life right now. Right where you
are tell Jesus that you believe that He died
on the cross for your sins, that you want
Him to forgive you for your sins, and that
you want Him to save you.
Jesus says that there is no other way to
get to the Father (God) except by living a
life where Jesus is your Lord. You can
say that you are a Christian or you can
even say that Jesus is your Lord, but if you
don’t obey God’s will and His commands,
the Bible says that you are a liar and will
not enter the Kingdom of Heaven
(Matthew 7:21, 1 John 2:4). But today
you can confess your sins and turn to
Jesus. Give up your old life and give it to
Jesus.
Now that you’ve accepted Jesus as
your Lord and Savior, unite with a church
so that you can fellowship with other
believers, who can encourage you in your
new faith. Seek to build a relationship with
God by reading the Bible and praying
daily. Finally, do what we’ve done and
share this wonderful news with someone
else THAT ETERNAL LIFE IS FREE!
“I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and
whoever lives and believes in me will never die….” John 11:25-26, NIV

Excitement in the Church
14
“To the angel of the church in
Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the
faithful and true witness, the ruler of
God’s creation. 15
I know your deeds, that
you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you
were either one or the other! 16
So,
because you are lukewarm—neither hot
nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my
mouth 17
You say, ‘I am rich; I have
acquired wealth and do not need a
thing.’ But you do not realize that you are
wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and
naked. 18
I counsel you to buy from me
gold refined in the fire, so you can become
rich; and white clothes to wear, so you
can cover your shameful nakedness; and
salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
19
Those whom I love I rebuke and
discipline. So be earnest and repent
20
Here I am! I stand at the door and
knock. If anyone hears my voice and
opens the door, I will come in and eat with
that person, and they with me. 21
To the
one who is victorious, I will give the right
to sit with me on my throne, just as I was
victorious and sat down with my Father
on his throne. 22
Whoever has ears, let
them hear what the Spirit says to the
churches.” Revelation 3:14-22, NIV
The church in Laodicea in Asia Minor
could just as easily be some church at the
crossroads of America, or in some county
seat, or in the countryside, or on some
busy thoroughfare. Laodicea was a well-
located, wealthy commercial center. It was
noted for both its medical influence and its
industrial power. What the living Christ
said to them, He says to us today; what He
desired of them, He desires of us; and
what He offered them, He offers us today.
It is excitement in the church!
First, a paradox is described in these
statements.
Here is the living Christ, the very
embodiment of the absolute truth and
faithfulness; the fulfillment of the purpose
of God, the Creator, the all powerful God.
Here also is a world of need: paganism,
pessimism and impurity―a world
exploding in sin.
In this setting is a church composed of
people whose relationship to Jesus Christ
is personal and definite, people who claim
eternal knowledge. As a church, it is a
redemptive fellowship that possesses
unusual power. It is a community of
healing in the midst of sick influences. It is
a church of potentially dynamic witnesses.
It is a people from whom Jesus Christ is
expecting positive power to flow to help a
world in need.
But instead, here is a church that is
“neither hot nor cold, but lukewarm.” It
has lost its glow for the wonderful will of
God and its feeling for people. It no longer
has the conviction to act. Its excitement
quotient burns low. What a paradox!
The same paradox applies to us today.
We have the living Christ, not only of the
New Testament pages, but also of more
than twenty centuries of history in seeing

His power at work. The same living Christ
speaks to us today. He is ready to pour
fresh power through our lives now. And
we live in an exploding world of people
and pollution, of lostness and lack of
purpose, of emptiness and loneliness―a
searching, spiritually hungry world. What
will churches do?
Some are saying that the day of the
church is over; and others say, “When the
church is gone, it will never be missed.”
But I say that these are the most spiritually
exciting days I have ever known. Exciting
things are happening all across America!
Christian television programming carries
the gospel into thousands of homes. And
thousands more are exploring spiritual
truths on the Internet. Countless believers
are turning to Jesus Christ for abundant
life and are experiencing and sharing the
gospel daily with others. God still has
great things for His people. We just need
His spiritual excitement in our souls!
Second, these words to Laodicea express
the plan of Christ for His church, then
and now.
Christ knows the church (Revelation
3:15), commands it (v. 18), loves it and
offers himself to it (v. 20).
A. It is not Christ’s will for any church to
be “lukewarm.”
Such is a condition of lifelessness,
apathy, and indifference. A lukewarm
church is one that possesses no excitement
in its spiritual atmosphere. Enthusiasm and
excitement are intangible evidences of life
stirring in a church. Laodicea evidently at
one time had life. It was spiritually hot,
involved, alive and serving (Colossians
2:1-20), but something happened to it.
Lukewarm is a condition nauseating to
Christ. He says, “I will spit you out.” And
what is more, the church at Laodicea is
sickening proud. It says that it has no
needs, yet Jesus knows that it is wretched,
miserable, poor, blind and naked. It is
definitely not Christ’s will for His church
to be like this.
B. It is Christ’s will for the church to be
alive, awake, alert, excited and excitable.
The Holy Spirit is the one who creates
life in the church. He indwells believers in
the church (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). He
inhabits believers (Ephesians 2:18-22) and
makes the church live.
There is power in the church. The
power of the Word of God and of the
gospel of Christ can change lives. Romans
1:16 says that it is “the power of God unto
salvation.” Something happens when it is
preached.
There is love in the church―God’s
love for us, our response to Him and our
love for others.
There is fellowship in the church.
Fellowship is helping, sharing and
ministering to others. All of this is Christ’s
will and plan for His people. This is
exciting!
Third, the words of Christ point the
pathway to excitement.
Jesus says four simple things will
bring excitement to His church:
A. Confession of need (Revelation 3:18)
He challenges the church to confess
poverty and become rich, to confess
nakedness and be clothed and to confess
spiritual blindness and receive sight.
© 2014 The Sprit of Barnabas. All Rights Reserved. 5
Issue 116 No. 13
Confession is essential to experiencing the
power of the Holy Spirit. Cleansing
follows confession (1 John 1:9).
B. Repentance (Revelation 3:19)
Repentance and zeal go together.
Repentance is to recognize and
acknowledge sin and to have sorrow for it
and turn away from it. It is a change of
mind resulting in a change of action and
direction.
C. Opening One’s life to Christ
(Revelation 3:20)
Jesus stands at the “door” of life
awaiting our voluntary response. No one
forces us, not even Christ. We must
choose for ourselves. It is an individual
act, one that each one of us must express
when Christ begins to control our lives.
And it is an act of faith, truly trusting Him
to do what He says He will do. Christ
gives the excitement. The book of Acts is
historical proof of this.
D. Obedience to the Holy Spirit
(Revelation 3:22)
When the Holy Spirit is obeyed and
yielded to, life is exciting! We need to be
filled with the Spirit according to Gods’
command.
It is not the size of the church that
counts; it is the Spirit. Where the Spirit
of the Lord is, there is excitement!

GETTING TO KNOW GOD

God Ordered Steps for Faith and Favor
“Direct my steps by Your word, and let no
iniquity have dominion over me.” Psalm
119:133
“The steps of a good man are ordered by
the LORD, and He delights in his way.”
Psalm 37:23
“A man’s heart plans His way, but the
LORD directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9
The Holy Bible contains several
scriptures that use the word “steps” to help
us understand how God moves us forward
when we ask Him to take charge of our
travels and direct our daily living. We are
all searching for the path that brings us in
the presence of the Lord. God gives us the
answers to prayers in a variety of ways.
When we look at some of the scriptures
about our steps and our destination, it is
very obvious that God does direct our
steps and moves us through many trials
and tribulations. I am amazed at the
blessings we receive when we ask the

Lord to walk with us. There is a song that
asks Jesus to “Walk with me Lord, please
walk with me.” This song describes how
the Lord helped me to understand the
strength and hope of stepping out in faith
and walking in favor.
When we look at the scripture found in
Psalm 119:129, we find that the Psalmist
exclaims, “Thy testimonies are wonderful:
therefore doth my soul keep them.” When
we walk down this passage, we see that
the writer knew that all the places that he
would go required that he testify that there
is no better way to travel than to have our
steps ordered by the Lord, There are book
devotionals, and even daily directions
written to help us walk out our daily living
as we continue our journey. Sometimes we
will find inspiration in places we least
expect it. God’s answers to prayers of faith
and favor are found when we follow the
signs that He provides. I am asking you to
go with me as we find ourselves in need of
a spiritual GPS which I describe as “God’s
Pointing Signs”.
The Holy Spirit gave me this
revelation when I recently walked in the
American Cancer Society’s “Making
Strides Against Breast Cancer” 5k race.
While walking this three mile course
under a very cloudy and rainy day, God
showed me how to look up and see the
street signs to help me to complete the
walk. I am now asking you to travel with
me as I show you how God did it. He told
me to look up at the signs instead of
worrying about the wet streets and the
people walking beside me, the cloudy day
and the doubt that I could finish the race.
What I discovered is that I needed to
surrender the journey to Him. This is when
the words to Psalm 119:133 began to ring
true in my spirit. There are several points
to bring to light as we describe these terms
below.
Avenue Advancement
The first street sign I noticed was an
avenue. The dictionary describes avenue
as “a wide street, a main street, or a
thoroughfare.” When I looked up and saw
the sign, I remembered to ask the Lord to
direct my steps and I really did drop the
chain of doubt and picked up speed. I
knew that because of the circumstances, I
would not walk as fast as I have in other
races but I had the assurance that like the
Psalmist said, God would not let any
iniquity have dominion over me. Yes, I
began the process of avenue advancement
to keep me walking as my steps were
being ordered. Psalm 119:169 tells us of
the advantage of calling out to the Lord as
we advance on the avenue. These are the
words that will help your walk: “Let my
cry come near before thee, O LORD: give
me understanding according to thy word
(119:169).
.
Street Stepping
The next application that I ask you to
consider is the signs that read “street.” A
street is defined as a public way in a city
or a town, usually with buildings on both
sides and including sidewalks and paths.
The Psalmist again reminds us in Psalm
37:23 that “The steps of a good man are
ordered by the LORD,” and even more
than this observation is that He delighteth
in his way. This is blessings following
blessings so that every step goes higher.
The Psalmist continues to shine the light in
verses 34 and 40 with the instructions for
the journey. He tells us to “wait on the
LORD, and keep His way” and He shall
exalt us to inherit the land.” This adds to
my belief that He has already ordered me
to avenue advancing and street stepping
with the promise that if I follow His Way,
read the signs and even know that the

“salvation of the righteous is of the
LORD: He is our strength in the time of
trouble” (vs. 39). I know there will be
times of trials and tribulation but my
stepping out in faith gives me the blessed
assurance of His concern and for His favor
to be able to complete the race. My
Making Strides 5k experience was a lesson
in faith walking and God showed me how
to check frequently and see that goodness
and mercy was following me just as the
Psalmist said in Psalm 23:6. I often find
that just singing the words to “Amazing
Grace” is the inspiration I need while I
stand at the intersection of a street, waiting
on the WALK light to change in my favor.
The street stepping cannot begin until the
praise and worship is in place for the road
we have already traveled. We sing a verse
from “Amazing Grace”; that is the best
way to describe our faith. The words are,
“Through many dangers, toils and snares. I
have already come; ‘Tis grace hath
brought me safe thus far and grace will
lead me home.” This is the basis for our
traveling the many streets of our journey.
Road to Revelation
“A man’s heart deviseth his way but
the Lord directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9
The last sign I noticed while completing
my walk was the one that read “road.”
This is the good news conclusion that I
bring before you for your consideration. In
this scripture, it is revealed that the Lord
directs our steps. We must magnify the
Lord for every road traveled and every
revelation that God puts in place for His
purpose of favor. When I see the definition
for a road, which reads “a way between
two places, a course or a route”, I shout
because I know that the Lord is the only
Way to travel well and that my faith will
show me His Way. This is the perfect
place to begin the road of revelation
because He has purposed that when we are
avenue advancing, street stepping and on
the road to revelation, then we step out in
faith and walk into favor. We must live
daily standing on the words from another
verse of the same song, “Amazing Grace”.
I bring this word to a close with these
words: “The Lord has promised good to
me; His word my hope secures; He will
my shield and portion be, As long as life
endures.” Let the people of faith say
Amen!

The journey was getting rough. Going
to the appointments with her and sessions
of radiation and chemotherapy were
wearing both on her and on me as well. I
wanted to be strong for her, strong in faith
where she was weak. Strong in protection
from those who didn’t believe she could
be healed. I wanted to be strong for the
family, filling in where she could not.
While I was pushing to be strong, God was
there strengthening me. There was no way
in my own strength I could have stood. I
stood in the strength He was supplying.
My faith in Him was growing and my
intimacy with Him was deepening.
One of the callings on my life by God
is intercessory prayer. I was a warrior for
the devil; God has made me an even
greater warrior for Him. One night during
intercessory prayer I heard God speak to
me, “I am lifting this burden off of you. I
have your mother!” Relief and peace
came over me. I knew that everything was
going to be alright. God was in control. I
knew within myself, my mother would be
whole!
My mother’s condition was worsening.
But I STOOD on what God spoke unto
me! Saints of God walk by faith and not
by sight! I believed what God had spoken.
So it was hard for me to see my mother
take the chemotherapy and the radiation. I
believe in the miraculous healing power of
God! And I was pushing for my faith to
step in where hers could not.
One day out of exhaustion, after
having spent the night with my mom, not
really sleeping for tending unto her, I
returned home, leaned against the counter
and I said Lord I hate what’s happening to
my mother, but I love you more. I made a
phone call to Co-Pastor Anna Booker, and
shared my thoughts and feelings. When I
hung up, I again spoke unto the Lord. I
hate what is happening to my mom Lord,
but I love you more. Then I heard God
speak one word, “Job.” I immediately fell
to my knees and cried, “Lord prepare my
heart for what’s to come.” I told him that I
would not leave Him, nor turn my back on
Him, no matter what.
Three hours later, I got a phone call to
return to hospice. They said she wouldn’t
make it. And even then within myself I
still held on to faith that she could be
healed. When I got there I touched her
hands and they were cold. I looked at her
face and her mouth was crooked. I knew
her life was leaving her. I stood up over
her and told her, mama I love you and
Jesus loves you too. A tear ran down her
face, and I knew she heard me. My mom
took her last breath that day. And I was
forever changed.
My God is a faithful God. His promise
of her healing was true. Yet God had
revealed to Bishop David Booker, who
had also been standing in the gap for her,
why He allowed her to leave. Having
given her a glimpse of His glory, a
glimpse of heaven, God Himself our
Almighty Father gave her the choice. She
chose Him over us. Who could possibly
be mad at that?

Oh my! God has really blessed me in
so many ways.
My testimony started from my birth. I
was born Albino (a human being that is
congenitally deficient in pigment –
Webster’s), which was accompanied by
complications. One of them was vision
impairment. And due to my vision, I had a
lot of obstacles to overcome. I was legally
blind for most of my life. The doctors told
my parents that I would NEVER be able to
see, or go to a “normal school”. BUT
GOD! God had the final word.
I finished high school, a “normal
school”; graduating with honors and on
the Dean’s List for two quarters. I had a
perfect 4.0 GPA. There were no special
accommodations made for me to cope
with blindness, because I knew that
through Christ I was healed and whole!
God has helped me finish two degrees
and has enabled me to have a certificate
through an accredited college. I am healed
today of my vision complications! I have
20/70 vision without corrections, coming
from numbers that where in the hundreds!
People never thought that I would be
behind the wheel of a car! I have my
license and am driving both in the daytime
and at night!
God has truly been good to me. I have
witnessed God moving on my behalf
several times in my life. I have endured
many hurts, including a marriage where
the devil stole everything from me. The
fact that I walked away with my sanity is a
testament to the goodness and grace of
God! And through His grace, I was able to
recover everything the devil stole from
me, PLUS!
God is now using me to reach and
impact others in a way I would have never
imagined! He has made me a minister of
the Gospel of Jesus Christ. An honor I do
not take for granted, nor carry lightly.
And though He has already done great
things for me, I know that there is even
greater on the horizon! I take no glory,
but I give all the glory to God my Father,
through His Son, my Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ!

The Journey
My journey with God started six years
ago February 2008. I can truly say, I
thank God for where He brought me from,

Issue 116 No. 13
what He brought me through, what He
brought me to and I thank Him for where
He is taking me.
Before Christ, my life, summed up in a
few words consisted of: shame, defeat,
loneliness and rejection. I dealt with lies
(lying and both being lied to and on),
fornication, manipulations, attempts of
suicide… It boils down to I felt unloved,
unlovable and I myself had a hard time
showing love to others.
Yet even in all of this, God was
ordering my steps. He was with me,
though I didn’t realize it. When people
talked about me, God was with me. When
my family hurt me, God was with me.
When I was in those sins, God was with
me. And in February 2005, when I had to
leave my home town of Memphis, with
nothing but the clothes on my back and
whatever money I had, God was with me.
Little did I know that the 8 hour car drive,
from Memphis to Cincinnati, would be the
turning point for my life. Leaving my
home, my family, and all that I knew,
HURT. I cried the entire 8 hour drive
from Memphis to Cincinnati. I was pulled
away from my comfort zones; my family,
my music, my security. I had nothing. Or
so I thought.
In February 2008, I visited, for the first
time, a church called Anointed Word
Fellowship. That, within itself, was out of
my comfort zone. Not knowing how to
give or receive love, it was awkward to
have all of those strangers come up to me,
hug me and show me what I now
understand to be the love of Christ. And as
I sat through that first service, I didn’t feel
any better than when I came in. My spirit
at that time was not open to receive from
the Lord. When service ended I had
already made up in my mind to take my
own life. I got up and walked out the
door, ready to put an end to the hurt. One
of the sisters at the church saw the look on
my face and followed me out. She
convinced me to come back into the
church. I reluctantly came back in and I
now know that it was only God who
ordered my steps. When I returned into
the church, the first lady, Co-Pastor Anna
Booker prayed for me. And without me
having ever shared with any of them what
I felt, what I was planning, God through
her rebuked the suicide spirit! I knew
then, more than ever, that God was real,
and that the people before me where His.
Needless to say, I made Anointed Word
Fellowship my church home, and Bishop
David and Co-Pastor Anna Booker, my
spiritual parents.
The journey has not been an easy one,
but a worthy one indeed. I must admit I
have had my moments of kicking,
screaming and pouting, but it has all been
absolutely worth it, to stand where I am
standing right now! Yes, I am still striving
towards perfection. I have not “arrived”,
but I am NOT who, what or where I used
to be. I thank God for bringing me to
Cincinnati, for bringing me to AWF, for
delivering me from lying, for delivering
me from sexual sins, for delivering me
from all the anger that had built up over
the years, creating a self destructive
stronghold in my life. I AM DELIVERED
FROM THAT! God brought me out!
“And the Lord brought us forth out of
Egypt with a mighty hand, and with an
outstretched arm…” (Deut. 26:8). And
when God brings you out of one thing, He
is bringing you into something else.
The very things I had to leave behind,
the very things I had to let loose of in
order to be free, were all right here in
Cincinnati waiting for me. All I ever
needed was already in God. When I let
loose of my natural family, He gave me a

spiritual one. When I let loose of my love
for music, He called me into the Praise and
Worship Team. When I let loose of what I
thought was security, He secured me
within Himself! All I ever thought I
needed or lost is in Jesus.
I thank God for my spiritual family at
Anointed Word Fellowship, especially my
parents in the faith Bishop and Co-Pastor
Booker. I am grateful for them, and for
my brothers and sisters who have and
display the LOVE of God. I thank God
for Anointed Word Fellowship, where
there is love, deliverance and hope. Saints

many ways. I have searched
neighborhoods and piles of debris for
possible victims following a storm. With
other area Fire Chiefs, I sent rescuers to

me as I responded to another area struck
by a storm. I have been temporarily
trapped in smoke when the wind changed
directions and brought the fire and smoke
back toward me. I have prayed both for the
wind to stop driving the fire and for the
wind to come and bring cool, fresh air.
Wind has incredible power. Last year
thunderstorms generated great wind gusts,
straight-line winds and roughly 70
tornadoes from Tennessee to Wisconsin
and from Missouri to Pennsylvania. And a
massive typhoon, 370 miles wide with
sustained winds of 195 mph, destroyed
many villages and cities in the Philippines
and killed at least 4,200 people with many
more missing. Every year tornadoes,
hurricanes and typhoons change the
landscape in their path, while injuring and
killing so many people.
The wind, however, can also be very
calming and soothing. Few can argue with
how comforting a breeze feels on a warm
day as it gently caresses your face. Just
close your eyes and visualize a gentle
mountain stream in front of you. Feel the
cool breeze flowing with the water and
how refreshing it feels; so soothing and
relaxing. It takes away all of your cares
and concerns. A cool, gentle breeze can
give us just what we need when the heat is
on.
The wind is always around us, but we
only notice it when we are in great need of

it or it is so strong that we can't help but
notice. You can't actually see the wind, but
you can see the effects of the wind; leaves
fluttering across your yard, gentle waves
on a lake or a flag waving. You can't touch
the wind, but you can feel its existence as
it embraces you. It has no voice, but you
can hear it move through the trees and
rush down the road.
Just like the wind, we rarely notice
God until we are in great need of Him or
we just can't help but notice what He has
done. Just like the wind, we can't see Him,
but we can see His impact and His activity
all around us. Just like the wind, we can't
touch Him, but we can certainly feel His
presence and there is no mistaking it when
you do. Just like the wind, God is so
incredibly powerful and, yet, so gentle and
comforting. In John 3:8, Jesus tells us,
“The wind blows wherever it wants. Just
as you can hear the wind but can’t tell
where it comes from or where it is going,
so you can’t explain how people are born
of the Spirit.” Just like the wind, God is
always with us and around us, ready to
demonstrate His power or caress you with
His love to give us what we need when we
need it most.

The Spirit of Barnabas
Singleness of the Mind
Father I pray that everyone who reads this
article has a renewed Spirit, and a new
desires to seek Your Word more. Just as
Jesus and You are one in the Spirit I pray
that our hearts, thoughts and prayers be as
Jesus whose mind was stayed on You, the
harvest and the advancement of the
kingdom of God in singleness of mind.
Amen.
“But let him ask in faith, nothing
wavering. For he that wavereth is like a
wave of the sea driven with the wind and
tossed. For let not that man think that he
shall receive anything of the Lord. A
double-minded man is unstable in all of
his ways..”
James 1:6-8 KJV
When reading this scripture and
pondering its statement on the double-
minded man, one would question
themselves and say what and who is the
double-minded man? Since man’s mind is
capable of comprehending and learning
new things, how could this be that he
could be double-minded? Well the Word
of God states that we as believer are first
to study the Word (Bible), 2 Timothy 2:15.
Therefore, the more we read and spend
time improving our relationship with God,
the more faith has the opportunity to grow
in us to trust in Him. Apostle Paul sternly
warns us to “let the mind of Christ be in
you, which was also in Christ Jesus”
(Philippians 2:5). This lets us know that
we must have another mind.

While some people doubt God’s ability
to perform His Word, others question His
authority and power over the universe.
Before I examine the scriptures, it is my
confidence that God is in full authority and
control of the universe. Currently, I want
to draw the distinction between single-
minded and double-minded. One way to
do this is by parallelism. The first part of
verse 6 gives the principle: But let him ask
in faith, nothing wavering…. By principle,
I mean the basic way something works
every time. Notice, the principle here is we
must ask, not doubt, and not waver each
time. When we ask God for something we
need to get His approval, the same as a
child would ask the parents to go to a
friend’s home. Such a spirit of humility
will allow our will to be in line with the
Almighty God’s purpose and plan for our
lives. Be specific when praying. For
example, ask Him how to maintain the
blessing and prosperity over the thing
asked. Are there any changes that you
need to make to keep His blessing flowing
into your life? The devil, your adversary,
is as a roaring lion seeking whom he will
devour. This means that satan is right there
seeking God to test your strength. If we
understand how to communicate with
God, then we will improve our
understanding of how to communicate
with others. Umm! You know what’s next
—less divorces, fewer raw words and less
gossiping.
Verses 7 and 8 sharply and quickly
introduce us to what happens when a
person doubts God: “For let not that man
think that he shall receive any thing of the
Lord. A double-minded man is unstable in
all his ways.” Wow! If life is falling apart,
it is easy to focus on the pain, trouble or
disappointment. Consider these the
unstable responses. Of course, it is the
time which creates the most stress and
despair.
It seems like you are wired to think
only the wildest and most wicked natural
responses if you receive sad news. But, the
Good News is you need not react to what
man says, rather react to what the Lord
says.
God is beyond the typical way of life,
although He lifts up the ordinary people.
Now, the correct response for a Holy
Spirit filled believer is to focus on the
promises of God. Looking up to God and
not looking down to the problems
certainly gives place to our trust in God
and not the frustration. We cannot be
certain that God will answer our prayers
and doubt Him for the answer at the same
time. As we have already witnessed, God
does not bless the unstable person.
If you reread the above paragraph you
will see that your thoughts and God’s
Word have to be equal. Otherwise, our
mindset will not be one with God. Most of
us have a habit of trusting ourselves.
Certain attitudes such as, ‘If you want
something done right you have to do it
yourself” or “I can do bad all by myself”,
block your relationship with God and man.
God wants us to show trust and confidence
in Him and Him alone. When we show
any sign of unbelief to God, His Son and
the Holy Spirit, He knows that we have an
incomplete knowledge of Him.
If we want God to work miracles in
our lives, we must have faith in God’s
ability to solve, conquer, heal, provide, or
bring closure to any problem that plagues
us. Some people may not receive the
blessings of the Lord they expect because
of their lack of trust in God. If you say “I
can’t” after you ask God in faith or “God
doesn’t have time for my little problem”

Issue 116 No. 13
then you are wavering in your faith. If you
say nothing good ever happens to you,
then it won’t because that is what you
believe. We must trust God even when it
seems like the world is against us. Just
remember to keep speaking forth the
greatness and His awesome provision for
the blessings.
Trust God
I pose a question to you. Do you hope
to go to heaven or do you know you are
going based on your confession, Romans
10:9-10, and your continual faith and
growth in Christ until the day of the
second coming? I am always shocked at
how many people are unsure of God’s best
for their lives. Please read John 3:16. We
must practice faith to have faith. Think
about it. Make it a habit of trusting Him.
Trusting God means that He loves us; He
is good and is willing to help us if we ask
in faith, and give us His very best.
One of the revelations that came to me
about this passage of scriptures is we
cannot be a part-time Christian. Do you
realize that some people try to call in sick
to God? If a person has a phony purpose
or commitment towards God, they will
think that God is not faithful. God is
faithful and we should be faithful as well.
Nevertheless, He wants us to be totally
committed to righteousness and
unwavering in our Christian walk.
Whether you attend church on a regular
basis or not, as a Christian you still have
an obligation to be faithful to God and
unwavering in your trust to Him; knowing
we are never outside of God’s presence,
power and knowledge. He is aware of our
whereabouts every second of the day. All
things are within His control, and there is
never a hidden thought or motive that He
cannot discern. God knows.
Prayer and Single Minded
When we pray in Jesus’ name, He
hears and answers. Often the answers we
receive appear to be different from what
we prayed, because we pray from the
mind, which is still connected to the old
man, and not the Spirit, who is in with the
Father (God). The Lord stated that His
ways and thinking are much higher than
ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). So when we pray our
words must line up with what has already
been decreed as right in God’s eyes. For
His Word cannot return void to Him. His
Words will move mountains, supply our
needs and produce miracles in our lives
when our minds are set on kingdom
business. Heaven and its heavenly host are
moved by His commands. This is not to
say that God does not want you to ask for
things, but when your mind becomes
renewed in His Word, you start to see,
know and pray for things so that He will
receive the Glory. This is when we
become single-minded.
Jesus prayed to the Father and said He
only did what He heard or saw the Father
do in the Spirit and that He did nothing of
Himself (John 5:19). This shows that when
a person’s mind is set on knowing God’s
Word the results will be singleness of
mind with God, where He is in control and
prayers are answered.

The Spirit of Barnabas
OUR MISSION:
Acts 15:31 reads: “The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message.” What the new
believers in Christ, the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia, read was a message sent by the apostles,
elders and the whole church in Jerusalem, proclaiming by grace were these new Christians saved. To
encourage and strengthen them even more, Judas and Silas were sent with Paul and Barnabas to confirm by
mouth what was written (Acts 15:1-35).
God provides hope and encouragement through His Word, the Bible. His Word helps us to understand
and know Him, His purpose for us individually and collectively as the body of Christ and the purpose of the
trials and tribulations we sometimes face. Through His Word, God reaches out to us, as only our Heavenly
Father can, providing loving guidance and encouragement. No message is of greater importance or more
encouraging than the message of God’s mercy and grace demonstrated in His gift of salvation through Jesus
Christ our Lord and Savior. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever
believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to
condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17)
In Neil T. Anderson’s book, The Bondage Breaker, he emphasizes the importance of Christians
encouraging one another. He states, “We all benefit from the spiritual growth we can see occurring in the
lives of other Christians. We all need to feel we have a sense of purpose and direction. (What we are doing
in some way has a positive impact on the spiritual growth and lives of others).”
The book of Acts tells us about a man by the name of Joseph. Joseph was a Levite from Cyprus, who
sold some land he owned and gave it to the church. He was nicknamed Barnabas by the apostles, which
means “Son of Encouragement” (Acts 4:36). He is described as, “a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and
strong in faith….” (Acts 11:24) It was Barnabas who introduced a man named Saul, later called Paul, to the
apostles because he knew that God’s grace and power can transform and convert those we feel are
hopelessly lost in sin. Paul later became one of the most influential Apostles of Christ writing 13 (the
Pauline Epistles) of the 27 books found in the New Testament of the Bible. As you read the book of Acts,
you will find that Barnabas was kind, generous, full of compassion and considerate of others, with a heart
filled with love and forgiveness. He gave encouragement and hope to his friends, to the new believers in
Christ and to those who had not yet accepted the truth, that Jesus is the Way (John 14:6).
Like Barnabas, Son of Encouragement, the purpose of this ministry is to walk in that same Spirit,
providing words of encouragement and messages of hope that will help bring about spiritual growth
and awareness to those who are in Christ and those who have not yet accepted Jesus Christ as their
personal Lord and Savior, and to help us all remember that We are not Alone (Matthew 28:20).

The Spirit of Barnabas 2014 #116 is a volunteer supported church magazine to encourage and educate

  • 1. Issue 116 No. 13 The Spirit of Barnabas® Acts 15:31 reads, “The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message.” Have You Heard the Good News? THE GOOD NEWS! © 2014 The Spirit of Barnabas. All Rights Reserved. 1
  • 2. Issue 116 No. 13 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Corinthians 5:17-21, KJV WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED? I want you to know that God’s deepest desire is to have an intimate love relationship with His creation, you! I also want you to know beyond the shadow of a doubt that God’s gift of eternal life, salvation, is absolutely free! Ephesians 2:8-9 says this: “For by grace are ye saved © 2014 The Sprit of Barnabas. All Rights Reserved. 2
  • 3. Issue 116 No. 13 through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God…” Do you truly believe that God’s gift of salvation is free, or do you, deep in your heart, believe that you have to be good enough to get into heaven? Do you feel that something in your past or present “disqualifies” you from being saved? Absolutely not! Acts 16:31 says: “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved.” If you believe that Jesus was the Son of God and that He died on the cross for your sins, then you shall be saved. That is all that is required! I want you to believe that and hold onto that truth with all of your heart. God loves you and isn’t concerned with what you’ve done or where you’ve been. His only concern is that He loves you and that He wants you to return His love by accepting His Son, Jesus, as your Savior. That’s the truth. If you want to be saved, or if you simply want the reassurance that you are saved, ask Jesus into your life right now. Right where you are tell Jesus that you believe that He died on the cross for your sins, that you want Him to forgive you for your sins, and that you want Him to save you. Jesus says that there is no other way to get to the Father (God) except by living a life where Jesus is your Lord. You can say that you are a Christian or you can even say that Jesus is your Lord, but if you don’t obey God’s will and His commands, the Bible says that you are a liar and will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 7:21, 1 John 2:4). But today you can confess your sins and turn to Jesus. Give up your old life and give it to Jesus. Now that you’ve accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, unite with a church so that you can fellowship with other believers, who can encourage you in your new faith. Seek to build a relationship with God by reading the Bible and praying daily. Finally, do what we’ve done and share this wonderful news with someone else THAT ETERNAL LIFE IS FREE! “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die….” John 11:25-26, NIV A Word From God’s Leader Reverend Melvin D. Watkins, Jr. Co-Pastor Mt. • 4. Issue 116 No. 13 Excitement in the Church 14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. 19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. 21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” Revelation 3:14-22, NIV The church in Laodicea in Asia Minor could just as easily be some church at the crossroads of America, or in some county seat, or in the countryside, or on some busy thoroughfare. Laodicea was a well- located, wealthy commercial center. It was noted for both its medical influence and its industrial power. What the living Christ said to them, He says to us today; what He desired of them, He desires of us; and what He offered them, He offers us today. It is excitement in the church! First, a paradox is described in these statements. Here is the living Christ, the very embodiment of the absolute truth and faithfulness; the fulfillment of the purpose of God, the Creator, the all powerful God. Here also is a world of need: paganism, pessimism and impurity―a world exploding in sin. In this setting is a church composed of people whose relationship to Jesus Christ is personal and definite, people who claim eternal knowledge. As a church, it is a redemptive fellowship that possesses unusual power. It is a community of healing in the midst of sick influences. It is a church of potentially dynamic witnesses. It is a people from whom Jesus Christ is expecting positive power to flow to help a world in need. But instead, here is a church that is “neither hot nor cold, but lukewarm.” It has lost its glow for the wonderful will of God and its feeling for people. It no longer has the conviction to act. Its excitement quotient burns low. What a paradox! The same paradox applies to us today. We have the living Christ, not only of the New Testament pages, but also of more than twenty centuries of history in seeing © 2014 The Sprit of Barnabas. All Rights Reserved. 4
  • 5. Issue 116 No. 13 His power at work. The same living Christ speaks to us today. He is ready to pour fresh power through our lives now. And we live in an exploding world of people and pollution, of lostness and lack of purpose, of emptiness and loneliness―a searching, spiritually hungry world. What will churches do? Some are saying that the day of the church is over; and others say, “When the church is gone, it will never be missed.” But I say that these are the most spiritually exciting days I have ever known. Exciting things are happening all across America! Christian television programming carries the gospel into thousands of homes. And thousands more are exploring spiritual truths on the Internet. Countless believers are turning to Jesus Christ for abundant life and are experiencing and sharing the gospel daily with others. God still has great things for His people. We just need His spiritual excitement in our souls! Second, these words to Laodicea express the plan of Christ for His church, then and now. Christ knows the church (Revelation 3:15), commands it (v. 18), loves it and offers himself to it (v. 20). A. It is not Christ’s will for any church to be “lukewarm.” Such is a condition of lifelessness, apathy, and indifference. A lukewarm church is one that possesses no excitement in its spiritual atmosphere. Enthusiasm and excitement are intangible evidences of life stirring in a church. Laodicea evidently at one time had life. It was spiritually hot, involved, alive and serving (Colossians 2:1-20), but something happened to it. Lukewarm is a condition nauseating to Christ. He says, “I will spit you out.” And what is more, the church at Laodicea is sickening proud. It says that it has no needs, yet Jesus knows that it is wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked. It is definitely not Christ’s will for His church to be like this. B. It is Christ’s will for the church to be alive, awake, alert, excited and excitable. The Holy Spirit is the one who creates life in the church. He indwells believers in the church (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). He inhabits believers (Ephesians 2:18-22) and makes the church live. There is power in the church. The power of the Word of God and of the gospel of Christ can change lives. Romans 1:16 says that it is “the power of God unto salvation.” Something happens when it is preached. There is love in the church―God’s love for us, our response to Him and our love for others. There is fellowship in the church. Fellowship is helping, sharing and ministering to others. All of this is Christ’s will and plan for His people. This is exciting! Third, the words of Christ point the pathway to excitement. Jesus says four simple things will bring excitement to His church: A. Confession of need (Revelation 3:18) He challenges the church to confess poverty and become rich, to confess nakedness and be clothed and to confess spiritual blindness and receive sight. © 2014 The Sprit of Barnabas. • 6. Issue 116 No. 13 Confession is essential to experiencing the power of the Holy Spirit. Cleansing follows confession (1 John 1:9). B. Repentance (Revelation 3:19) Repentance and zeal go together. Repentance is to recognize and acknowledge sin and to have sorrow for it and turn away from it. It is a change of mind resulting in a change of action and direction. C. Opening One’s life to Christ (Revelation 3:20) Jesus stands at the “door” of life awaiting our voluntary response. No one forces us, not even Christ. We must choose for ourselves. It is an individual act, one that each one of us must express when Christ begins to control our lives. And it is an act of faith, truly trusting Him to do what He says He will do. Christ gives the excitement. The book of Acts is historical proof of this. D. Obedience to the Holy Spirit (Revelation 3:22) When the Holy Spirit is obeyed and yielded to, life is exciting! We need to be filled with the Spirit according to Gods’ command. It is not the size of the church that counts; it is the Spirit. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is excitement!   GETTING TO KNOW GOD Reverend Dr. Wyvonia Woods Harris Mt. We are all searching for the path that brings us in the presence of the Lord. God gives us the answers to prayers in a variety of ways. When we look at some of the scriptures about our steps and our destination, it is very obvious that God does direct our steps and moves us through many trials and tribulations. • 7. Issue 116 No. 13 Lord to walk with us. There is a song that asks Jesus to “Walk with me Lord, please walk with me.” This song describes how the Lord helped me to understand the strength and hope of stepping out in faith and walking in favor. When we look at the scripture found in Psalm 119:129, we find that the Psalmist exclaims, “Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them.” When we walk down this passage, we see that the writer knew that all the places that he would go required that he testify that there is no better way to travel than to have our steps ordered by the Lord, There are book devotionals, and even daily directions written to help us walk out our daily living as we continue our journey. Sometimes we will find inspiration in places we least expect it. God’s answers to prayers of faith and favor are found when we follow the signs that He provides. I am asking you to go with me as we find ourselves in need of a spiritual GPS which I describe as “God’s Pointing Signs”. The Holy Spirit gave me this revelation when I recently walked in the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” 5k race. While walking this three mile course under a very cloudy and rainy day, God showed me how to look up and see the street signs to help me to complete the walk. I am now asking you to travel with me as I show you how God did it. He told me to look up at the signs instead of worrying about the wet streets and the people walking beside me, the cloudy day and the doubt that I could finish the race. What I discovered is that I needed to surrender the journey to Him. This is when the words to Psalm 119:133 began to ring true in my spirit. There are several points to bring to light as we describe these terms below. Avenue Advancement The first street sign I noticed was an avenue. The dictionary describes avenue as “a wide street, a main street, or a thoroughfare.” When I looked up and saw the sign, I remembered to ask the Lord to direct my steps and I really did drop the chain of doubt and picked up speed. I knew that because of the circumstances, I would not walk as fast as I have in other races but I had the assurance that like the Psalmist said, God would not let any iniquity have dominion over me. Yes, I began the process of avenue advancement to keep me walking as my steps were being ordered. Psalm 119:169 tells us of the advantage of calling out to the Lord as we advance on the avenue. These are the words that will help your walk: “Let my cry come near before thee, O LORD: give me understanding according to thy word (119:169). . Street Stepping The next application that I ask you to consider is the signs that read “street.” A street is defined as a public way in a city or a town, usually with buildings on both sides and including sidewalks and paths. The Psalmist again reminds us in Psalm 37:23 that “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD,” and even more than this observation is that He delighteth in his way. This is blessings following blessings so that every step goes higher. The Psalmist continues to shine the light in verses 34 and 40 with the instructions for the journey. He tells us to “wait on the LORD, and keep His way” and He shall exalt us to inherit the land.” This adds to my belief that He has already ordered me to avenue advancing and street stepping with the promise that if I follow His Way, read the signs and even know that the © 2014 The Sprit of Barnabas. • 8. Issue 116 No. 13 “salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: He is our strength in the time of trouble” (vs. 39). I know there will be times of trials and tribulation but my stepping out in faith gives me the blessed assurance of His concern and for His favor to be able to complete the race. My Making Strides 5k experience was a lesson in faith walking and God showed me how to check frequently and see that goodness and mercy was following me just as the Psalmist said in Psalm 23:6. I often find that just singing the words to “Amazing Grace” is the inspiration I need while I stand at the intersection of a street, waiting on the WALK light to change in my favor. The street stepping cannot begin until the praise and worship is in place for the road we have already traveled. We sing a verse from “Amazing Grace”; that is the best way to describe our faith. The words are, “Through many dangers, toils and snares. I have already come; ‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far and grace will lead me home.” This is the basis for our traveling the many streets of our journey. Road to Revelation “A man’s heart deviseth his way but the Lord directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9 The last sign I noticed while completing my walk was the one that read “road.” This is the good news conclusion that I bring before you for your consideration. In this scripture, it is revealed that the Lord directs our steps. We must magnify the Lord for every road traveled and every revelation that God puts in place for His purpose of favor. When I see the definition for a road, which reads “a way between two places, a course or a route”, I shout because I know that the Lord is the only Way to travel well and that my faith will show me His Way. This is the perfect place to begin the road of revelation because He has purposed that when we are avenue advancing, street stepping and on the road to revelation, then we step out in faith and walk into favor. We must live daily standing on the words from another verse of the same song, “Amazing Grace”. I bring this word to a close with these words: “The Lord has promised good to me; His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures.” Let the people of faith say Amen!   WITNESS FOR THE LORD Sherry Roper Anointed Word Fellowship Pictured from right to left- Sherry Roper, Jayme McCarter, Mama Shelley Bennett and our beloved Mama Vanessa Walker who is the one that chose God over us 2013 was a year of Faith for me . • 9. Issue 116 No. 13 The journey was getting rough. Going to the appointments with her and sessions of radiation and chemotherapy were wearing both on her and on me as well. I wanted to be strong for her, strong in faith where she was weak. Strong in protection from those who didn’t believe she could be healed. I wanted to be strong for the family, filling in where she could not. While I was pushing to be strong, God was there strengthening me. There was no way in my own strength I could have stood. I stood in the strength He was supplying. My faith in Him was growing and my intimacy with Him was deepening. One of the callings on my life by God is intercessory prayer. I was a warrior for the devil; God has made me an even greater warrior for Him. One night during intercessory prayer I heard God speak to me, “I am lifting this burden off of you. I have your mother!” Relief and peace came over me. I knew that everything was going to be alright. God was in control. I knew within myself, my mother would be whole! My mother’s condition was worsening. But I STOOD on what God spoke unto me! Saints of God walk by faith and not by sight! I believed what God had spoken. So it was hard for me to see my mother take the chemotherapy and the radiation. I believe in the miraculous healing power of God! And I was pushing for my faith to step in where hers could not. One day out of exhaustion, after having spent the night with my mom, not really sleeping for tending unto her, I returned home, leaned against the counter and I said Lord I hate what’s happening to my mother, but I love you more. I made a phone call to Co-Pastor Anna Booker, and shared my thoughts and feelings. When I hung up, I again spoke unto the Lord. I hate what is happening to my mom Lord, but I love you more. Then I heard God speak one word, “Job.” I immediately fell to my knees and cried, “Lord prepare my heart for what’s to come.” I told him that I would not leave Him, nor turn my back on Him, no matter what. Three hours later, I got a phone call to return to hospice. They said she wouldn’t make it. And even then within myself I still held on to faith that she could be healed. When I got there I touched her hands and they were cold. I looked at her face and her mouth was crooked. I knew her life was leaving her. I stood up over her and told her, mama I love you and Jesus loves you too. A tear ran down her face, and I knew she heard me. My mom took her last breath that day. And I was forever changed. My God is a faithful God. His promise of her healing was true. Yet God had revealed to Bishop David Booker, who had also been standing in the gap for her, why He allowed her to leave. Having given her a glimpse of His glory, a glimpse of heaven, God Himself our Almighty Father gave her the choice. She chose Him over us. I was born Albino (a human being that is congenitally deficient in pigment – Webster’s), which was accompanied by complications. One of them was vision impairment. And due to my vision, I had a lot of obstacles to overcome. I was legally blind for most of my life. The doctors told my parents that I would NEVER be able to see, or go to a “normal school”. BUT GOD! God had the final word. I finished high school, a “normal school”; graduating with honors and on the Dean’s List for two quarters. I had a perfect 4.0 GPA. There were no special accommodations made for me to cope with blindness, because I knew that through Christ I was healed and whole! God has helped me finish two degrees and has enabled me to have a certificate through an accredited college. I am healed today of my vision complications! I have 20/70 vision without corrections, coming from numbers that where in the hundreds! People never thought that I would be behind the wheel of a car! I have my license and am driving both in the daytime and at night! God has truly been good to me. I have witnessed God moving on my behalf several times in my life. I have endured many hurts, including a marriage where the devil stole everything from me. The fact that I walked away with my sanity is a testament to the goodness and grace of God! And through His grace, I was able to recover everything the devil stole from me, PLUS! God is now using me to reach and impact others in a way I would have never imagined! He has made me a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. An honor I do not take for granted, nor carry lightly. And though He has already done great things for me, I know that there is even greater on the horizon! • 11. Issue 116 No. 13 what He brought me through, what He brought me to and I thank Him for where He is taking me. Before Christ, my life, summed up in a few words consisted of: shame, defeat, loneliness and rejection. I dealt with lies (lying and both being lied to and on), fornication, manipulations, attempts of suicide… It boils down to I felt unloved, unlovable and I myself had a hard time showing love to others. Yet even in all of this, God was ordering my steps. He was with me, though I didn’t realize it. When people talked about me, God was with me. When my family hurt me, God was with me. When I was in those sins, God was with me. And in February 2005, when I had to leave my home town of Memphis, with nothing but the clothes on my back and whatever money I had, God was with me. Little did I know that the 8 hour car drive, from Memphis to Cincinnati, would be the turning point for my life. Leaving my home, my family, and all that I knew, HURT. I cried the entire 8 hour drive from Memphis to Cincinnati. I was pulled away from my comfort zones; my family, my music, my security. I had nothing. Or so I thought. In February 2008, I visited, for the first time, a church called Anointed Word Fellowship. That, within itself, was out of my comfort zone. Not knowing how to give or receive love, it was awkward to have all of those strangers come up to me, hug me and show me what I now understand to be the love of Christ. And as I sat through that first service, I didn’t feel any better than when I came in. My spirit at that time was not open to receive from the Lord. When service ended I had already made up in my mind to take my own life. I got up and walked out the door, ready to put an end to the hurt. One of the sisters at the church saw the look on my face and followed me out. She convinced me to come back into the church. I reluctantly came back in and I now know that it was only God who ordered my steps. When I returned into the church, the first lady, Co-Pastor Anna Booker prayed for me. And without me having ever shared with any of them what I felt, what I was planning, God through her rebuked the suicide spirit! I knew then, more than ever, that God was real, and that the people before me where His. Needless to say, I made Anointed Word Fellowship my church home, and Bishop David and Co-Pastor Anna Booker, my spiritual parents. The journey has not been an easy one, but a worthy one indeed. I must admit I have had my moments of kicking, screaming and pouting, but it has all been absolutely worth it, to stand where I am standing right now! Yes, I am still striving towards perfection. I have not “arrived”, but I am NOT who, what or where I used to be. I thank God for bringing me to Cincinnati, for bringing me to AWF, for delivering me from lying, for delivering me from sexual sins, for delivering me from all the anger that had built up over the years, creating a self destructive stronghold in my life. I AM DELIVERED FROM THAT! God brought me out! “And the Lord brought us forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm…” (Deut. 26:8). And when God brings you out of one thing, He is bringing you into something else. The very things I had to leave behind, the very things I had to let loose of in order to be free, were all right here in Cincinnati waiting for me. All I ever needed was already in God. I have searched neighborhoods and piles of debris for possible victims following a storm. With other area Fire Chiefs, I sent rescuers to New Orleans to assist with search and rescue efforts following Hurricane Katrina. I have actually witnessed a tornado cross the road within 50 yards of me as I responded to another area struck by a storm. I have been temporarily trapped in smoke when the wind changed directions and brought the fire and smoke back toward me. I have prayed both for the wind to stop driving the fire and for the wind to come and bring cool, fresh air. Wind has incredible power. Last year thunderstorms generated great wind gusts, straight-line winds and roughly 70 tornadoes from Tennessee to Wisconsin and from Missouri to Pennsylvania. And a massive typhoon, 370 miles wide with sustained winds of 195 mph, destroyed many villages and cities in the Philippines and killed at least 4,200 people with many more missing. Every year tornadoes, hurricanes and typhoons change the landscape in their path, while injuring and killing so many people. The wind, however, can also be very calming and soothing. Few can argue with how comforting a breeze feels on a warm day as it gently caresses your face. Just close your eyes and visualize a gentle mountain stream in front of you. Feel the cool breeze flowing with the water and how refreshing it feels; so soothing and relaxing. It takes away all of your cares and concerns. You can't touch the wind, but you can feel its existence as it embraces you. It has no voice, but you can hear it move through the trees and rush down the road. Just like the wind, we rarely notice God until we are in great need of Him or we just can't help but notice what He has done. Just like the wind, we can't see Him, but we can see His impact and His activity all around us. Just like the wind, we can't touch Him, but we can certainly feel His presence and there is no mistaking it when you do. Vernon Baptist Church–Westwood Ministerial Advisor The Spirit of Barnabas Singleness of the Mind Father I pray that everyone who reads this article has a renewed Spirit, and a new desires to seek Your Word more. Just as Jesus and You are one in the Spirit I pray that our hearts, thoughts and prayers be as Jesus whose mind was stayed on You, the harvest and the advancement of the kingdom of God in singleness of mind. Amen. “But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord. A double-minded man is unstable in all of his ways..” James 1:6-8 KJV When reading this scripture and pondering its statement on the double- minded man, one would question themselves and say what and who is the double-minded man? Since man’s mind is capable of comprehending and learning new things, how could this be that he could be double-minded? Well the Word of God states that we as believer are first to study the Word (Bible), 2 Timothy 2:15. Therefore, the more we read and spend time improving our relationship with God, the more faith has the opportunity to grow in us to trust in Him. Apostle Paul sternly warns us to “let the mind of Christ be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). This lets us know that we must have another mind. © 2014 The Sprit of Barnabas. • 14. Issue 116 No. 13 While some people doubt God’s ability to perform His Word, others question His authority and power over the universe. Before I examine the scriptures, it is my confidence that God is in full authority and control of the universe. Currently, I want to draw the distinction between single- minded and double-minded. One way to do this is by parallelism. The first part of verse 6 gives the principle: But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering…. By principle, I mean the basic way something works every time. Notice, the principle here is we must ask, not doubt, and not waver each time. When we ask God for something we need to get His approval, the same as a child would ask the parents to go to a friend’s home. Such a spirit of humility will allow our will to be in line with the Almighty God’s purpose and plan for our lives. Be specific when praying. For example, ask Him how to maintain the blessing and prosperity over the thing asked. Are there any changes that you need to make to keep His blessing flowing into your life? The devil, your adversary, is as a roaring lion seeking whom he will devour. This means that satan is right there seeking God to test your strength. If we understand how to communicate with God, then we will improve our understanding of how to communicate with others. Umm! You know what’s next —less divorces, fewer raw words and less gossiping. Verses 7 and 8 sharply and quickly introduce us to what happens when a person doubts God: “For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.” Wow! If life is falling apart, it is easy to focus on the pain, trouble or disappointment. Consider these the unstable responses. Of course, it is the time which creates the most stress and despair. It seems like you are wired to think only the wildest and most wicked natural responses if you receive sad news. But, the Good News is you need not react to what man says, rather react to what the Lord says. God is beyond the typical way of life, although He lifts up the ordinary people. Now, the correct response for a Holy Spirit filled believer is to focus on the promises of God. Looking up to God and not looking down to the problems certainly gives place to our trust in God and not the frustration. We cannot be certain that God will answer our prayers and doubt Him for the answer at the same time. As we have already witnessed, God does not bless the unstable person. If you reread the above paragraph you will see that your thoughts and God’s Word have to be equal. Otherwise, our mindset will not be one with God. Most of us have a habit of trusting ourselves. Certain attitudes such as, ‘If you want something done right you have to do it yourself” or “I can do bad all by myself”, block your relationship with God and man. God wants us to show trust and confidence in Him and Him alone. When we show any sign of unbelief to God, His Son and the Holy Spirit, He knows that we have an incomplete knowledge of Him. If we want God to work miracles in our lives, we must have faith in God’s ability to solve, conquer, heal, provide, or bring closure to any problem that plagues us. Some people may not receive the blessings of the Lord they expect because of their lack of trust in God. • 15. Issue 116 No. 13 then you are wavering in your faith. If you say nothing good ever happens to you, then it won’t because that is what you believe. We must trust God even when it seems like the world is against us. Just remember to keep speaking forth the greatness and His awesome provision for the blessings. Trust God I pose a question to you. Do you hope to go to heaven or do you know you are going based on your confession, Romans 10:9-10, and your continual faith and growth in Christ until the day of the second coming? I am always shocked at how many people are unsure of God’s best for their lives. Please read John 3:16. We must practice faith to have faith. Think about it. Make it a habit of trusting Him. Trusting God means that He loves us; He is good and is willing to help us if we ask in faith, and give us His very best. One of the revelations that came to me about this passage of scriptures is we cannot be a part-time Christian. Do you realize that some people try to call in sick to God? If a person has a phony purpose or commitment towards God, they will think that God is not faithful. God is faithful and we should be faithful as well. Nevertheless, He wants us to be totally committed to righteousness and unwavering in our Christian walk. Whether you attend church on a regular basis or not, as a Christian you still have an obligation to be faithful to God and unwavering in your trust to Him; knowing we are never outside of God’s presence, power and knowledge. He is aware of our whereabouts every second of the day. All things are within His control, and there is never a hidden thought or motive that He cannot discern. God knows. Prayer and Single Minded When we pray in Jesus’ name, He hears and answers. Often the answers we receive appear to be different from what we prayed, because we pray from the mind, which is still connected to the old man, and not the Spirit, who is in with the Father (God). The Lord stated that His ways and thinking are much higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). So when we pray our words must line up with what has already been decreed as right in God’s eyes. For His Word cannot return void to Him. His Words will move mountains, supply our needs and produce miracles in our lives when our minds are set on kingdom business. Heaven and its heavenly host are moved by His commands. This is not to say that God does not want you to ask for things, but when your mind becomes renewed in His Word, you start to see, know and pray for things so that He will receive the Glory. This is when we become single-minded. Jesus prayed to the Father and said He only did what He heard or saw the Father do in the Spirit and that He did nothing of Himself (John 5:19). This shows that when a person’s mind is set on knowing God’s Word the results will be singleness of mind with God, where He is in control and prayers are answered.   BIBLE TRIVIA Where the Spirit Is…. • 27. OUR MISSION: Acts 15:31 reads: “The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message.” What the new believers in Christ, the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia, read was a message sent by the apostles, elders and the whole church in Jerusalem, proclaiming by grace were these new Christians saved. To encourage and strengthen them even more, Judas and Silas were sent with Paul and Barnabas to confirm by mouth what was written (Acts 15:1-35). God provides hope and encouragement through His Word, the Bible. His Word helps us to understand and know Him, His purpose for us individually and collectively as the body of Christ and the purpose of the trials and tribulations we sometimes face. Through His Word, God reaches out to us, as only our Heavenly Father can, providing loving guidance and encouragement. No message is of greater importance or more encouraging than the message of God’s mercy and grace demonstrated in His gift of salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17) In Neil T. Anderson’s book, The Bondage Breaker, he emphasizes the importance of Christians encouraging one another. He states, “We all benefit from the spiritual growth we can see occurring in the lives of other Christians. We all need to feel we have a sense of purpose and direction. (What we are doing in some way has a positive impact on the spiritual growth and lives of others).” The book of Acts tells us about a man by the name of Joseph. Joseph was a Levite from Cyprus, who sold some land he owned and gave it to the church. He was nicknamed Barnabas by the apostles, which means “Son of Encouragement” (Acts 4:36). He is described as, “a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and strong in faith….” (Acts 11:24) It was Barnabas who introduced a man named Saul, later called Paul, to the apostles because he knew that God’s grace and power can transform and convert those we feel are hopelessly lost in sin. Paul later became one of the most influential Apostles of Christ writing 13 (the Pauline Epistles) of the 27 books found in the New Testament of the Bible. As you read the book of Acts, you will find that Barnabas was kind, generous, full of compassion and considerate of others, with a heart filled with love and forgiveness. He gave encouragement and hope to his friends, to the new believers in Christ and to those who had not yet accepted the truth, that Jesus is the Way (John 14:6). Like Barnabas, Son of Encouragement, the purpose of this ministry is to walk in that same Spirit, providing words of encouragement and messages of hope that will help bring about spiritual growth and awareness to those who are in Christ and those who have not yet accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, and to help us all remember that We are not Alone (Matthew 28:20).
