Setbacks
General
• Project organisation in a heritage
institution
• IT problems
• Copyright issues
Dealing with ALM-sector
• Differences in organisation
position, strategy, scope
• Competitive positions
• Differences in description level and semantic metadata
(thesauri, etc.)

The Memory of the Netherlands Bas Savenije
What did we learn?
• Define a common interest or aim (user; economic)
• Make agreements on commonly accepted standards
(Open standards: DC; Mpeg 21; Web based; SRU; OAI)
• Make knowledge sharable (on technical and semantic level)
• Let others use your metadata and images (Copyright!)
• Don’t tell the others how to do things but share your
experiences

The impact of digitisation
Borders are changing or disappearing:
• Producer – Consumer
• Work processes
• Documents

The impact of digitisation
Changing user demands:
• Everybody wants to have access to all kinds of information:
cultural, scientific
• They expect the services to be closely related to their
community or their workflow
• Impatience !!
© 2010 Koninklijke Bibliotheek – National Library of the Netherlands
The Memory of the Netherlands Bas Savenije
The importance of networking
• The borders between heritage institutions are blurring
• Co-operation between networks becomes essential
• The meaning of an institution is not only defined by its
traditional “core business” directed towards its own identity
• Also by its identity in a network:
the number and type of partners
and the relation with these partners
© 2010 Koninklijke Bibliotheek – National Library of the Netherlands
The Memory of the Netherlands Bas Savenije
Example: Network of libraries
in the Netherlands
• KB, public libraries, university libraries
• Towards a national information infrastructure
• Union catalogue for print items
• Digital content repository for all relevant digital information:
E-books, journals (licensed and open access), cultural
heritage
© 2010 Koninklijke Bibliotheek – National Library of the Netherlands
The Memory of the Netherlands Bas Savenije
The national library infrastructure
• A national digital library
• Access through all libraries: front offices
• New target groups for public libraries
• Example:
pilot with Elsevier Science
© 2010 Koninklijke Bibliotheek – National Library of the Netherlands
The Memory of the Netherlands Bas Savenije
Cultural heritage institutions
• Borders between different types of content are blurring
• Users want integrated access
• Long term: National Digital Information Infrastructure
• Neerlandiana: aggregator for Europeana

Mission NCDD
The Memory of the Netherlands
© 2010 Koninklijke Bibliotheek – Nationale bibliotheek van Nederland
To facilitate the establishment of a national infrastructure for
long-term access to digital objects in the public sector within a
five-year time span.
Infrastructure =
• awareness throughout the lifecycle
• clearly defined roles and responsibilities
• trustworthy repositories
• shared services and tools
• structural funding
• selection mechanisms
• knowledge and expertise
Bas Savenije
© 2010 Koninklijke Bibliotheek – National Library of the Netherlands
Basic principles of the NCDD strategic
agenda
The Memory of the netherlands
© 2010 Koninklijke Bibliotheek – Nationale bibliotheek van Nederland
• Every individual organisation is responsible for ensuring long-term
access to its own digital objects
• Cooperation within sectors must be strengthened: process driven by
network leaders
• Cooperation between sectors must be strengthened: the NCDD
• Administrative cooperation must also be strengthened

“Well in our country,” said
Alice, still panting a little, “you’d
generally get to somewhere else - if
you ran very fast for a long time, as
we’ve been doing.”
“A slow sort of country!” said
the Queen. “Now, here, you see, it
takes all the running you can do, to
keep in the same place. If you want to
get somewhere else, you must run at
least twice as fast as that!”

If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!”

Notas do Editor

  6. This is the mission of the NCDD. It is a very ambitious mission, we admit. But it helps to have a clear vision of what the end result should be. As the word ‘infrastructure’ is used in many different contexts, let me emphasize that our infrastructure is understood to include not just storage facilities (hardware, software), but also a whole range of less tangible matters: a clear definition of roles and responsibilities, including transition work flows between producers and custodians of digital information, selection criteria, quality critera, shared services, knowledge and expertise.
  7. 1: This sounds rather self-evident, but in reality many smaller organisations are expecting other, national organisations to take this responsibility from them. That is not going to happen. Each and every organisation remains responsible for managing its own digital resources. Outsourcing certain aspects of data management may very well be part of the policy of an organisation, but the responsibility can never be outsourced. 2: As some of the key impediments to long-term access are sector-specific, the NCDD-partners have decided that some type of leadership is called for. Making a difference in a sector requires not only knowledge and expertise, but also a certain scale, a suitable national and international network, and a certain standing in the sectors. Thus four national organisations have been assigned specific network tasks, i.e., to be the driving force behind the process to establish the required infrastructure in their sector. This does not mean that they will do all the work themselves. Quite the contrary. The NCDD expects all organisations, large and small, to do their bit. But overall coordination will be provided by a national organisation. 3: The NCDD itself will continue to play a role as a national mediator and stimulator, particularly focusing on aligning roles and responsibilities between sectors, and on sharing knowledge and expertise. 4: I mentioned before that the digital age transcends analogue boundaries. This also applies to the administrative level. For a plan such as the NCDD’s to succeed, administrative commitment is essential. And it too must transcend traditional boundaries. We will need concerted investments by the administration to make the plan work.
  8. This slide shows the present responsibilities of network leaders and their proposed network remits. In the research domain there are two leaders: the KB for publications and Data Archiving and Networked Services for research data. It is obvious that the digital age with its ‘enhanced publications’ will require that the KB and DANS work closely together to provide long-term access to combinations of traditional publications and research data. You will also note that the Cultural heritage sector still lacks a network leader. This sector is so diffuse that a natural leader could not be identified at short notice. Talks are being held presently within the sector and with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science to decide upon a strategy for this sector.
