NBCC set a deadline to end breast cancer by
2020 (see White Paper)
NBCC has developed a Strategic Plan for
meeting this deadline
DBCC reviewed the White Paper and an
overview of the Strategic Plan
NBCC answered initial questions from DBCC
The DBCC needs to decide its level of
involvement
3. 3
DBCC Question: What is meant by “end of
breast cancer”?
“We mean no breast cancer; stop from getting the
disease at all”
NBCC plans to focus on two key areas:
◦ Learning how to stop breast cancer metastasis
from taking women’s lives
◦ Learning how to prevent the disease from
developing
4. 4
With an emphasis on removing barriers and
encouraging collaboration, NBCC is:
Identifying specific areas crucial to achieving the
goal
◦ NBCC encourages getting feedback on “why is it not
possible?”
Convening stakeholders
Developing and implementing plans in each area
Monitoring and reporting on progress
Providing oversight and analysis
5. 5
NBCC will host two Strategic Summits in 2011
◦ one each on the topics of Metastasis and Prevention
Participants will:
◦ develop a strategic plan for the associated topic
◦ identify major issues that are ripe for further work
and that would have a significant impact on
breast cancer in a five year time frame
6. 6
Catalytic Workshops will then be held around
these issues in 2012 and beyond
Starting in 2013 NBCC will convene biennial
Leadership Summits with a multi-disciplinary
and visionary group to examine progress and
provide guidance and direction
◦ Strategic Plan is a evolving plan; the leadership
summits will examine new learnings
to shape the plan
7. 7
NBCC will convene a Public Policy Roundtable
on February 2011
◦ Small group of individuals who think innovatively
about how governments should work and what role
they play in research and healthcare
Based on this work, NBCC will develop
legislation to help achieve THE deadline
Annual progress reports will be issued
8. 8
NBCC will undertake an expansive Outreach
