Christmas in Portugal, by Ana & Alexandra, 9A
1. Our Christmas traditions
We made a
powerpoint about
Christmas, to show
you our traditions.
Project: eTwinnnig Subject: English Students: Alexandra and Ana Filipa, 9A
2. Traditions (food)
• On Christmas Eve, we eat codfish with
potatoes and cabbage. And on Christmas day,
we usually eat roast turkey with roast
potatoes, too.
• And then there are the sweets that are made
by the family as a dessert. There are “filhós”,
codfish cakes, among others.
3. Christmas Eve
• On Christmas Eve, we go to the 'Largo da
Igreja', to see 'Santa Claus', which gives
presents to the young children. There are
fireworks that symbolize the lighting of the
bonfire. People drink 'cafés da avó'
accompanied by 'filhóses'. The 'quarentões',
with torches, lit the bonfire, which gives
brightness at night.
4. Christmas Day
• People go to the church, to celebrate the birth
of Jesus. They have dinner at home with the
family, or go to restaurants, and spend the rest
of the day with the family.
