This document provides information about an Advanced Mediation Specialist certificate program offered through UNM Continuing Education. The 40-hour program is intended for students interested in conducting mediation and negotiation at an advanced level in complex settings. It requires previous basic mediation training. The certificate includes courses on New Mexico mediation laws and rules, sharpening advanced mediation skills, and facilitating advanced mediation. Mediation and Conflict Resolution Specialist Certificate
This certificate is intended for students who are interested in gaining knowledge of
mediation and conflict resolution. Students are introduced to effective communica-
tion skills, recognizing and responding to conflict and strategies for successful nego-
tiation and avoiding pitfall in the combined 40 hours of training. Learn the process
and application of communication skills, mediation and ethics of difficult situations.
Students who successfully complete this 40-hour training certificate are eligible to
mediate professionally at the entry level.
This certificate is designed for administrative and management professionals, career
and life coaches, counselors and social workers, medical and legal professionals. These
courses can be applied toward the New Mexico Mediation Association certification.

Understanding Conflict and
Mediation 101
Conflict is part of everyday life and impacts
all relationships. Learn the nature of conflict
and basic skills to be effective in difficult
situations to have your needs met and the
foundations of the mediation process and
what it takes to be a third party to help
people in conflict find mutually acceptable
solutions. Whether you are in pursuit of
being a professional mediator or not, this
class provides knowledge and understanding
of several aspects that influence human be-
havior in conflict leaving you with the ability
to cope with difficult people and difficult
situations more effectively. This course will
apply toward certification offered by the NM
Mediation Association. Note: This class meets
concurrently with course 40126.

Communicating Skillfully in
Difficult Situations
Master the skills necessary for efficient ne-
gotiation planning and learn the diplomatic

with the other side. Learn how to establish
successful and productive long-term relation-
ships through creative win-win negotiating.
Also, discover methods of creating an enjoy-
able, low-stress atmosphere for the negoti-
ation process, and ways to avoid falling into
common negotiating traps.

Win-Win Conflict Resolution
Resolve conflicts to the satisfaction of all
interested parties, in a win-win manner, and
they tend to stay resolved. Learn to be sup-

solutions, and manage tensions associated
with emotions and differing personalities.

Professional Mediation and
Conflict Resolution Specialist
Mediation is a process in which an impartial
third party facilitates communication and
negotiation and empowers voluntary decision
making by the parties to a dispute. Especially
at times when people feel that something is
unfair, something has been taken or broken
that they value. Mediation also serves various
purposes; including identify interests, explore
and assess possible solutions, and to define
and clarify issues. In this certificate, learn the
nature of conflict and how to have desirable
outcomes by learning and applying the medi-
ation process and follow the ethical profes-
sional standards. With the completion of this
certificate, you can begin work professionally
and continue toward certification offered by
the NM Mediation Association. More details
are available from our website. Note: Course
40110 will meet concurrently for the first
session only. This course meets on Saturday
and Sundays for a total of 5 sessions (some
weekends are skipped.

Advanced Mediation Specialist Certificate
Advanced mediator tools are essential in facilitating complex court connected medi-
ations, as well as successful work and relationship related negotiations. These tools
include an overview of the NM Mediation Procedures Act, relevant case law, court
and ethics rules. Advanced mediators will be trained as to adequate preparation and
goals, providing an appropriate mediation setting, addressing physical needs and
time constraints, recognizing unresolved emotional issues and power imbalances,
saving face, providing a cooling off period and securing written agreements. Par-
ticipants will also focus on sharpening skills, facilitating advanced mediation and
avoiding obstructions to negotiation.
This certificate program requires forty (40) hours of basic mediation training. The
program is intended for students who are interested in conducting mediation and
negation at an advanced level in more complex settings. Students who successfully
complete this forty (40) hour training are eligible to mediate professionally at the
advanced level.
This certificate is designed for attorneys, non-attorneys, administrative and man-
agement professionals, career and life coaches, counselors, social workers, educa-
tors, medical and other legal professionals.

Advanced mediators will benefit from an intro-
duction to the NM Mediation Procedures Act,
relevant case law, and applicable court and eth-
ics rules. This course will provide an overview
of legal requirements for mediations conducted
within our State. Class participants will also
discuss various advanced mediation techniques
and analyze hypothetical fact patterns.

Advanced Mediator: Sharpening
Advanced Mediation Skills
A more detailed analysis of the NM Mediation
Procedures Act and relevant case law will
provide advanced mediators a better under-
standing of this essential statute and case
law. Advanced mediators will review various
statewide mediation programs and applicable
procedural and ethical rules. This course will
also provide an overview of adequate prepa-
ration skills and potential obstructions to suc-
cessful negotiation. Fact patterns and class
discussion will focus on sharpening advanced
mediation skills. MCLE approval is pending.

Facilitating Advanced Mediation
Advanced mediators will receive training as to
advanced mediation skills such as: adequate
preparation and goals; providing an appro-

This course will also address mediation bias,
reality checks, active listening, reframing,
and ways to avoid mediation impasse. Fact
