About Broomheads’ Homemade:
We are a creative practice with a background in design
and architecture. Over the years we have gained in-depth
knowledge of how public art is produced using workshops,
public opinion, research and good design. Our goal is to
bring something positive to peoples’ environment creating
public art that can be understood and embraced.

Our ethos: Architecture & Design
‘Homemade’ symbolises what we feel is important: honesty;
keeping things simple; commissioning local and using the
fewest materials or ingredients; turning nothing into
something; bringing people together; and using our home
to make art that brings a smile. Contents:

As part of the Johnson Fold estate annual broadcast we were commission to
engage the community in the science of radio. We worked with a local youth
group to create three shows and to ensure everyone could tune in we devised a
simple cardboard radio.

Pleckgate
Location: Blackburn, Lancs
Cost: £250,000 Working as Lead Artists we have developed an arts strategy for a new BSF academy in
Blackburn. We engaged with the community through a number of events, including walks,
radio workshops, film-making and planting days.

The engagement process influenced the design of several public artworks that are
currently being realised in and around the school. The projects include constructing

integrate the landscape and building to create an overall piece.

The Square Routes project involved working with pupils from 4 Lancaster schools
to develop ideas for improvements to public spaces in the town centre. The pupils
created a film and podcast which highlighted issues and suggested solutions.

The film was presented to the City Council and shown in the tourist information
                                                                                                 project film
centre. The work influenced the city’s planning policy and gave a voice to the
young people of Lancaster. We then worked with the Council to transform those
ideas into a cultural masterplan.

This delightful workshop led project comprised a jigsaw of soft building
blocks, that created a 1:25 scale replica of the Royal Festival Hall,
Queen Elizabeth Hall and Hayward Gallery. Each block containing an

SpArC
Location: Bishops Castle, Shropshire
Cost: £16,000
Broomheads’ are currently working with a group of young people in rural
Shropshire to design a bold piece of public art for the outside of SpArC, the
                                         local sports and arts centre.

The aim of the project is to bring the internal creative character of the
SpArC centre to the fore and to make it identifiable as a vibrant community
venue. The final design will celebrate the input of the local youth.

installation was originally designed as a temporary summer project but it has

Commissioned by Lambeth Borough Council and GLL, this interactive light sculpture
represents one of the largest public art projects undertaken in the area for over a
decade. The piece transforms the exterior of the leisure centre into a vibrant
artwork that is controlled directly by the local community.

The undulating piece is inspired by wave patterns and responds to movement in the
pool. The lights can be controlled by members of the public via text Project film
messaging, allowing local people to change the colour of the building and trigger
light shows. CLICK HERE TO VIEW
Nice things people have said:

‘I have worked with Tony on three projects and love the
way his designs merge a contemporary urban vibe with
playfulness and humour. He always delivers on time and in
budget, and both understands, and is happy to resolve,
the more mundane, technical and practical issues as well
as the creative ones. He also provides lovely illustrated
presentations of ideas which is really helpful in getting CV: References & Personal Statements
