3. Decide about mission of your life ? What do you want to do in life ? We cant do everything – we have to identify some sectors where we are capable to contribute something to the society. This decision depends on 4 aspects : 1. our strengths (our capabilities) 2. our passion (what really motivates us) 3. our network (who can help us / support us 4. social demand and supply position (sometime great ideas will fail – becuase people dont like them)
4. Work with some entrepreneurs ... Entrepreneurs are different from others – because they work with tremendous positive spirit, missionary zeal, contagious enthusiasm, fervour, and and urge to do something. They are willing to take risk and are willing to try out new experiments, even if they fail. They have a sprit to fight with the situation. These characteristics can come in you only when you work with entrepreneurs. You have to really break your service class mentality (dont mind my language).
5. Look out of new ideas .... People dont like new ideas - most creative and innovative ideas are discarded by people at the first thought – but you should PICK UP these ideas, refine them, polish them, prepare them again – make them work. Great ideas are spread out all around us – but in dust bins – just pick them up – our habits / customs and our closed thinking dont allow us to look at those ideas (we reject them instantly).
6. What type of ideas suit you ? You can have a variet of ideas like : Do you like advocacy ? do you like Writing & Media related work ? Is it any product or a service that ticks you ? Is it the idea of sustainable development that fascinates you? Are you looking for some more philosophical and fundamental issues relating to our universe ?
7. Try out the ideas – learn from trial and error ... Try the ideas – they will fail – but keep trying them. When I started FREE PGPSE – people didnt accept the idea – the ONLINE PGPSE Programme is yet to pick up – but for last 4 years I have been trying – I have to continue to try – People are slaves to their thinking – they dont accept new ideas. We have deeply inherited the easier path to follow others, to follow brands and to follow what has already been tested out. So you have to wait for people to try it out. ....
8. Prepare business plans – and critially evaluate them... The purpose of preparation of business plan is to ensure that you are able to predict all the failures that are possible. When you prepare a business plan, you have some assumptions – write them down- these assumptions need not be valid – if these assumptions fail – your business will also fail. So critically evaluate your assumptions ... and again prepare a business plan....
9. Identify social problems and challenges .... Some people say - “society is full of problems”.. this is an opportunity for social entrepreneurs – it is easier to work in a society where there are lots of problems and people realise that they are living in real hell. You can bring transformation in that society easily. ...
10. Why do people tolerate social problems .... Every person is not a social entrepreneur ...they will face the social problem and continue to face the problems. 11. What to learn and how to become a social entrepreneur? You have to learn a few things – 1. delearn what you have learnt so far – that we cant do anything – we can change the world – the world is bound to be a dirty place – people work only for money 2. learn to use resources carefully (dont waste resources – most people waste resources these days – the more developed people waste more resources) 3. learn to work with people & change them (the most difficult of all)
12. How to prepare business plan? 1. write your assumptions 2. identify relevance of your concept / idea / product / service & its technical feasibility 3. why should people accept your idea / product / service (identify the benefits that you can offer – which are superior to the available ones) 4. prepare your marketing plan 5. undertake financial analysis 6. identify the schedule 7. survey and test out the idea
13. How to build team ? The most difficult question. Finding people who are willing to work with you as social entrepreneur – is the most difficult task – I have not been able to build a team so far - as most people fail to understand the ideas that I stand for ... I believe that this is the most essential part of social entrepreneurship – look out for those people, who have faced tragedies in life / real problems in life (they have a greater urge to bring about social transformation and have a passion to work for a noble cause).
14. How to raise money ? Dont raise money in the beginning – work with your own money – once you have framed a team and established systems - go for raising money you can contact funding agencies / venture capitalists / supporters for funding ... 15. Establish your brand ... People have herd mentality – they follow the established brands and established organisations.... If I try to conduct a workshop on social entrepreneurship – I have to make a lot of efforts – if a professor of an established business school tries – people just run after him – so this is the fact of life – you also have to establish your brand ...

18. Start with small initiatives .... Dont wait for large resources to come to you – start with what you have - if a baby waits to grow up to learn to walk , it will never walk ... so just take up your little steps – whatever you can do – do – and wish for the best – most people will criticise you – but a few will appreciate you also - that is the best time that you can have – so just go ahead ....
19. Go for lean organisation .. SPIC – MACAY still has only one paid employee – surprised !!! so dont wish to make a government kind of department with lots of Babus and clerks ... just have a lean organisation .. with as many entrepreneurs (no employees) as are available ... (entreprereneurs are scarce, clerks are in plenty) ..

21. The inner power – the best power for social entrepreneurship ... Social entrepreneurs are made from inner power – not from a degree from a premium business school can you harness that inner power in you ? ? ? if a person has suffered a lot – there is a great possibility that the person can become a social entrepreneur – because there is a possibility of a great will power and a high level of tolerance for problems / sufferings ....
22. Can you believe it ? Jagdish Bhai Patel couldnt see, couldnt walk properly (half body paralysis), yet he created one of the best institutions of our time – BPA. .. how ? ? ?

24. Time for society – no time for self ... Vipin Bhai Shah (career consultant and founder of Sarvottam Karkirdi Margdarshan) rarely gets time for play or for entertainment – as he has to give career guidance to thousands of students of Gujarat (so he cant spare time).. ... social entrepreneurs have to spare time for society - not for self. ...(so be prepared for it – although you may not like it)
25. How will you scale up your work ? Plan for it ... how will you spread your work how will you spread your work in other places.. how will you provide your knowledge and skills to others ... how will you become a model organisation or a training & development centre for others ...
