3. What is OA?
“Open Access” to information – the
free, immediate, online access to the
results of scholarly research, and the right
to use and re-use those results as you
need – has the power to transform the way
research and scientific inquiry are
conducted. It has direct and widespread
implications for
academia, medicine, science, industry, an
d for society as a whole.

18. Copyright
• Copyright is a legal concept,
enacted by most governments,
giving the creator of an original
work exclusive rights to it, usually
for a limited time.
• Generally, it is "the right to copy",
but also gives the copyright holder
the right to be credited for the
work, to determine who may
adapt the work to other forms,
who may perform the work, who
may financially benefit from it,
and other related rights.
• Did you know that you own the
copyright of everything that you
create?
19. OERs and Copyright
Does making your work open mean
that you lose your rights?
NO
You can license them under
20. What are Creative
Commons?
• Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit
organization devoted to expanding the range
of creative works available for others to build
upon legally and to share. The organization
has released several copyright-
licenses known as Creative Commons
licenses free of charge to the public.
• These licenses allow creators to
communicate which rights they reserve, and
which rights they waive for the benefit of
recipients or other creators.
21. What are Creative
Commons? (cont.)
• Creative Commons licenses do not replace
copyright, but are based upon it. They replace
individual negotiations for specific rights
between copyright owner (licensor) and
user (licensee), which are necessary under
an "all rights reserved" copyright
management with a "some rights reserved"
management employing standardized
licenses for re-use cases where no
commercial compensation is sought by the
copyright owner.
