2. Who was important?
Lord Dunmore- Redcoat (British)
• Royal Governor of Virginia at the start of the
Revolutionary War
• A Patriot spy told him there weren’t many
soldiers at Great Bridge, so he sent a LOT
of British Soldiers to take the landover 600 soldiers!!
3. Why Great Bridge?
• Did you know it used to be called “Bridgetown”?
• The village of Great Bridge was the key to holding the
“Great Road” which was the best supply route to the
south.
• This was how the British got supplies to their ships.
• Lord Dunmore WANTED to be in command of Great
Bridge!!!
4. Who else was important?
William Woodford- Patriot
• Colonel of the Virginia Second Regiment
• He wanted to break up the British
supply line and kick Lord Dunmore
out of Norfolk!
5. Who else was important?
Billy Flora- Patriot
• Freed black man
• The HERO of the Battle of Great Bridge
• He stayed near the bridge until the last minute and, in
the middle of constant gunshots at him, took up one
of the wooden planks making it hard for the British to
cross.
6. What it looked like then…

7. What happened…
• With Billy Flora’s help, the Patriots (900 of them) waited until the last
second before firing and took the Redcoats by surprise!
• The Redcoats retreated fast, but not before 102 had been killed…
• Only one Patriot was wounded, Lieutenant Thomas Nash. It was said
he hurt his thumb…
• The battle only lasted half an hour.
8. Why did it matter?
• It raised the spirits of the Patriots!
• Ended British rule in the colony of Virginia forever!
• It prevented the British from being able to use the
Great Road to get provisions during the upcoming
Revolutionary War.
