Dangerfield Newby was born into slavery in Virginia in 1825. He married Harriet Jennings, who was owned by another family. In 1858, Newby joined John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry in hopes of freeing his wife and children. Newby was the first casualty of the raid, shot by a civilian. After the raid, Harriet and their children were sold into slavery in Louisiana. Years later, Harriet remarried and lived freely in Virginia until her death in the 1880s.
