2. Goodwin-Genre Characteristics
Characteristics of an r’n’b music video is to show off
the amount of money they have by having extravagant
things like cars and houses. However in this music video
we are not shown Any of them but we are shown the typical
gold chain, watches, rings and occasionally grills ( a silver or
gold dimond mouth piece)
The absolute first thing we see is an iphone with Dr
Dre speakers which is promotional meaning that if
they show the speakers in the music video there is a
very high chance the fans of the people in this music
video will go and buy the speakers because they have
it and they have enough money to get it.
R’n’b songs usually have a defined
chorus that can be sung along to.

3. Goodwin-Lyrics + Visuals
In Usher’s verse, he is taking about how he is in a
club and has met a girl but he is wondering if she
has a boyfriend. He likes her as he wants to get to
know her better.
This picture is of
the lyrics ‘I got
plans to get to
know you better’.
It gives us an
image that the he had just spotted the women and
is thinking of going to talk to her.
Typically a r’n’b song
sung by a male has
sexual actions shown.
When he says ‘the one
to do you right’ he
thrusts his hips acting
it out.

4. Goodwin-Music + Visuals
The music and visuals go together as the artists are dancers and they dance to the beat.
The images are synchronous. The video is edited so that we as an audience can watch them
dance, sing and rap. It is not edited in a choppy way meaning that the footage doesn't change
quickly.
When he says ‘eye to eye’ he glances at the
clothed woman.
Rick Ross refers to his watch as he says
‘watches getting jealous’

5. Goodwin-Record Label + Close Ups
Close ups are essential in a r’n’b genre music video as the artist needs to viewed so that
they audience can get a sense of what the artist looks like, their facial expressions and
their performance in the music video.
If there were no close ups in a r’n’b genre music video then the audience would not be able to
really connect with the artist and believe the role that they are playing to tell a story in their
music video.

6. Goodwin-Notion of looking-Voyeuristic
From the beginning of the music video we see women sexualised by them in a bikini showing
off the outside of their private parts, bums and breast.
The women in the red symbolises sexual desire as she stands out from all of the other girls in
white. It seems as if because she stands out, the audience should look at her.
All the women are
not doing anything
but standing there to
be looked at which
Usher looks at the
women in red.
The notion of looking is not
really used in this music
video as they barely look at
the girls. However there is
opportunity for the Male
Gaze to be present as the
girls are there to be looked at.
Interestingly in most r’n’b music videos women are hanging of men's arms but this one doesn't.

7. Goodwin-Intertexual Reference
Those people who go to the club can identify and understand the lyrics and the music
video because may they know and have experienced a ‘New Flame’ meaning someone in a
club that they have their eye on, male or female.
Someone can still identify as relationships fist start off with an attraction which everyone
would have experienced in their like one way or another.
The verses are kind of what men would say to chat up a woman which most people have
experience or have seen somewhere( a movie, in real life)
