Since elementary school I have envisioned my life deeply intertwined with art, however, at the same
time I also knew that vision never had me living out the stereotype of a starving artist either. As a child

of second language acquisition (SLA). Previously, learning a language was heavily based on learning

sentences. As a result, that has led to a neglect of learning vocabulary as there was an assumption that
vocabulary can be learned through communication and can take care of itself (Meara, 1980;
Maiguaschca, 1993).

Every July the LDS church puts on an Easter pageant called Jesus the Christ, which shows the story of
Joseph Smith and his discovery of the golden plates. I also learned that those who practiced the
Mormon faith were persecuted. At the beginning of its founding, the Mormon faith had about 40
supporters and by 1831 there was more than 71 people who were Mormons in Ohio. However, the
Mormons were chased away from Ohio. Along with Joseph Smith another famous supporter of the
Mormon faith was Brigham Young, a penniless carpenter who had been looking for direction when his
wife was near death, discovered Joseph Smith and Mormonism. Young felt that he had found the right
church and decided to convert to Mormonism. Joseph Smith continued to express locals by saying that
with Mormonism you could talk to God and have a personal relationship. In 1831, he sent out
missionaries to get more converts. In 1833 the first Mormon temple was built in Kirtland, Ohio and by
1837 there were more than 3,000 converts. However, when Smith lost some money, many of his
followers believed that he was an unfit leader and questioned if he was indeed a profit. The Mormons

Dickens uses his characters to illustrate these themes. He shows in depth character transformation by
showing his characters learning these lessons through suffering and hardships.
Great Expectations is told by a first person narrator, the narrator being the main character, Pip. He tells
about his own life of selfishness and greed and how he learned through his own experiences how to
make himself useful and happy. This novel is a first person narrative because it is Pip s own story.
Since it is about his own life it makes it easy for the reader to identify with Pip and what he is going

can be downright mean. Anonymity, lack of accountability, absence of visual cues, and perceived

communication has also been shown to hurt the perpetrator more than it hurts whoever is on the

An additional factor that makes virtual communication so misunderstood is that a part of the message,
the sender s tonality and body language, is removed in virtual communication, thus removing a large
part of the overall message. Just think about this for a moment, remove eye to eye contact, the

to communicating face to face, allowing them to pick up on the subtle cues that body language gives

instincts of fight or flight. In doing this, the message is taken as a threat, and the receiver reacts
