Summary Of Allegory Of Desolation In The Devil s Highway
Luís Alberto Urrea uses the allegory of desolation in the book The Devils Highway, A True Story to
illustrate life as well as death on the Devils Highway in the border region. The book accomplishes this
through his usage of the word. The word desolation is defined as a state of complete emptiness or
destruction. Often, the word does not appear, when this is the case, the illustration shifts to life.
Morton W. Bloomfield described allegory by stating that it allows for the significance of a work to go
beyond its meaning. The significance of that meaning is what may be called allegory. (Bloomfield,
1972) Desolation s meaning spans much more than its definition in The Devils Highway, A True Story.
It can on different meanings, it is not limited to the definition. Desolation and Cosmos define
Desolation stating, Desolation does not stand in isolation, but as a complex pattern. (Geyer, 1999) The
allegory of Desolation is ones demise in the desert on the Devils Highway.
In the author s note, Luís Albreto Urrea ends with the statement: But no story about death and the
Devil s Highway could rightly exist without the strong presence of Desolation, in all its intimidating
glory. (Urrea ) Urrea has directly indicated to us that there is no possible way that a story about death
could be without desolation. The two are synonymous. Where one is the other must follow. Urrea
makes this well known early on in the book by cluing the reader into the relationship that the two
share.

Doodle s Life In The Scarlet Ibis By James Hurst
Have you ever tried your hardest to accomplish something, just to let it die? In The Scarlet Ibis by
James Hurst, Doodle and the scarlet ibis both experienced this moment in life. Doodle had a rare and
life threatening heart condition that he developed from birth. This condition restrains him from doing
the things he loves. The scarlet ibis also had a disability that confined its abilities.
Both the scarlet ibis and Doodle traveled a long way, just to end their life. Doodle s brother has pushed
him a long way so that he could succeed. In the story the narrator said, Once I had succeeded in
teaching Doodle to walk, I began to believe in my own infallibility, and I prepared a terrific
development program for him, unknown to Mama and Daddy, ... Show more content on

Both Doodle and the scarlet ibis s life concluded in a terrible way. In the story, the narrator explained
the death of the scarlet ibis, At that moment the bird began to flutter, but the wings were
uncoordinated, and amid much flapping and a spray of flying feathers, it tumbled down, bumping
through the limbs of the bleeding tree and landing at our feet with a thud. Its long, graceful neck
jerked twice into an S, then straightened out, and the bird was still, (Hurst ll. 298 302). Also, the
narrator specified Doodle s tragic death, He didn t answer, so I placed my hand on his forehead and
lifted his head. Limply, he fell backward onto the earth. He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his
neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red, (Hurst ll. 383 386). The scarlet ibis traveled
a long way from where it lived to escape from the storm. The bird began to die due to an injury. As a
result from that injury, the scarlet ibis s life terminated. Doodle s life also came to an end after he
traveled a long way. Doodle traveled a long way by learning many new things and developing many
skills that he was unable to do before. From being pushed so hard, his heart condition took over and

Digital Imaging Technologies Have Become Indispensable...
ABSTRACT
Digital imaging technologies have become indispensable components for clinical procedures. Major
advances in the field of medical imaging and computer technology have created opportunity for
quantitative analyses of medical images and provided powerful techniques to probe the structure,
pathology and function of the human body . In medical applications, skilled operators usually extract
the desired regions that may be anatomically separate but statistically indistinguishable. It is subjected
to manual errors and biases, which is time consuming, and has poor reproducibility. The problem
faced in clustering is the identification of clusters in given data. A widely used method for clustering is
based on K means in which the data is partitioned into K number of clusters. In this method, clusters
are predefined which is highly dependent on the initial identification of elements representing the
clusters well. Several researchers in clustering has focused on improving the clustering process such
that the clusters are not dependent on the initial identification of cluster representation.

Ordeal or Reconstruction
1. What were the four main questions facing peacemakers in 1865? a. The aftermath of the war was
crucial due to the fact that the south and north were totally separated during the civil war, but more
importantly was that all the fighting had ben done in the south, which meant that the majority of the
damage was done in the southern towns. This caused the towns and fields to be ruined, and many
properties worthless. So many peacemakers wanted to assure the southerners possessions. b. Secondly
the peacemakers were faced with was giving freedom to the black slaves, which meant that would be
the end of slavery all together. c. Since after the war the country need much reconstruction within the

e. Johnson s Reconstruction Proclamation: i. His stance on reconstruction was similar to Lincoln s, in
that he was not as harsh on the South as the Radical Republicans in Congress wanted. In May 1865,
Johnson issued his Amnesty Proclamation, which required an oath of loyalty from former
confederates, who would then be pardoned and have their property restored (except slaves) that had be
confiscated by Federal officials during the war. The only people not included in this proclamation
were high ranking military and civilian Confederate officials and those who resigned their positions in
the Federal government to serve the in the Confederacy. Johnson issued a second proclamation
outlining his plan for how the states should go about getting themselves back into the Union. Under
this plan, the President would appoint a governor to each state under reconstruction. 5. What were the
effects of the Black Codes? a. The purpose of the black codes was to keep black people from voting.
The result was the 15th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which prohibited using
race as a reason to prevent people from voting. The emancipation of black slaves in post Civil War
America did not run smoothly. Though the slaves had been freed in name, many did not feel secure
about giving black people rights. The black codes prevented black Americans from voting and

The Halo Effect
For our action research project, we studied the Halo effect and how the Halo effect decreasing with
age. Our hypothesis for this experiment was: As we age, the influence our first impressions of
someone have on our future impressions decreases.
The method of research we chose was; experiment.
Before we could conduct this experiment we wrote a story in which the protagonist and antagonists
roles were switched around. Meaning, that the perceived protagonist was actually the antagonist and
vise versa. After writing the story we came up with seven questions which corresponded with the
above story. These questions ranged from, who would you want your friend to be? , to what did you
learn from our experiment? . The purpose of these questions was ... Show more content on

We were surprised to see how well the grade 3 students paid attention to our story and cooperated with
us as we went through the questions. As for the grade 6 class, they cooperated with as as best they
could, with the exception of the lack of interest in the story, which was mentioned previously. As far
as our method of research goes, it worked out perfectly. If we had done any other method it might not
have worked out as well. For example, a survey would not have been as accurate as we were aiming
for. By doing an experimental project we were able to get the fairly honest answers from the students.
This is mainly because they did not know what we were experimenting and thus could not alter their
answer to meet our demands.
After our experiment was conducted we analysed the data. This data showed us that: 67% of the grade
3 students continued to believe that tyrone was the protagonist, while only 21% of the grade 6 students
believed tyrone was the protagonist. This is a 46% difference between the grades. Looking at this data
we can see that as our age increases, our opinions of a person being influenced by our first impression
decreases. Or in other words, the Halo effect reduces. These results can be seen in the following

divesting its stakes at a faster rate. This implies that P G wants to expand in areas of strength focus its
full concentration there and at the same time reduce its stake in all the ventures that it deems

One of the major acquisitions by P G in the last 10 years was the acquisition of the German Hair

revenues exceeding $3.6 billion in 2002. Through this deal, P G entered the salon market. They also

and enacted values (what the company does) can possibility affect the perception within an
organization. The chief executive officer behavior is questionable. American Red Cross did not waste
anytime making a decision on what to do regarding the chief executive officer. If Everson was willing

Tips For Your Web Performance Essay
In general, if you want to know more about your web performance, you should be using some metrics
to learn more and improve your website. If the website is not getting the number of viewers you
expected it would be, there are some problems that you might be concerned about. First, the web
content does not contain enough keywords that visitors use to look up using internet to find your
website. Therefore, I would recommend to look at what keywords that visitors used to find you. Also,
it is useful to know which web browsers your visitors come from because there could be some errors
if you come from different web browsers. Sometimes, the page is loaded slowly on web browsers such
as Firefox and Safari. Moreover, keep tracks of Visitors , Returning Visitors , and Unique Visitors :
this will let you know if your website is helpful and interesting enough for visitors to come back after

Volunteering For The Salvation Army
Volunteering for the Salvation Army
When the f 5 tornado decimated the town of Smithville on April 27, 2011, a whopping 15 people were

Emergency assistance, which is needed whenever there is a fire, hurricane, flood, and other

the holiday months. The angel program is a program that allows individuals, families, or groups select
a child or a senior citizen to provide a special Christmas to. The toy shop is a place where parents shop
for gifts at no cost for their children ages 1 13. Volunteers fill stockings for children and senior
citizens in the stocking program. The Salvation Army holds holiday meals on Christmas and
Thanksgiving at the army shelter for anyone. Holiday food boxes, boxes of non perishables, are given
to those in need. There is also the renowned Kettle Campaign, where bell ringers stand outside of
businesses and parks collecting money in red kettles, helps pay for all of the Christmas programs the

Green Design
John A. Walker argues that designers must undertake an ecological role. Arguably, humanity is re
designing the planet Earth every hour of every day, either deliberately by rational planning or
inadvertently with billions of unconsidered actions, and in the main ruining it. We all carry a
responsibility for the destruction and therefore we all need to mend our ways, but of course some
groups within society have more power than others to take remedial action: engineers, architects,
planners and designers for instance. If they became pro active rather than re active, they could play a
crucial role: their skills, imagination and ingenuity could help preserve the planet for future
generations. Green or ecological design is one positive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And on May 12 this year the Design Museum held a well attended conference entitled Green Design
Beyond the Bandwagon? which included speakers from Zanussi, Volvo, New Consumer Magazine,
Design Week and the Labour Party. An Ecological Design Association has been founded in Britain
with the intention of encouraging training, professional standards, product testing and ecodesign in
general. In terms of transportation, green design ranged from changes in the engines of conventional
cars to take unleaded petrol and to reduce fuel consumption, to Anthony Howard s Africar (a cheap,
wooden vehicle designed for Africa). Volvo in Sweden renewed its long term commitment to making
environmentally friendly cars and buses, while Renault in France designed an electric car. Modifying
existing vehicles is a step in the right direction but it does nothing to limit the ever growing number of
cars on the roads. If population growth has to be limited, so does the growth in cars. Many greens
would prefer to walk and cycle or to use public transport. Once the will exists to improve and expand
the latter, many more opportunities for the green transport designer will occur. Fashion also witnessed
changes during the 1980s. Anita Roddick s chain of Bodyshops was highly successful in selling

IT Management Capability Essay
2.2 Effect of IT management s capability on non financial firm performance
IT management capabilities are defined as the ability of an organization s IT and management staff to
administer IT resources and transform them for the creation of business value (Peppard J. , 2007). IT
function is typically portrayed as an island, separated from the rest of the organization. IT is usually
seen as a resource that can be managed from within a box on the organizations map. Yet research
clearly indicates otherwise; Peppard (2007) is quoted as saying, IT cannot be managed as an island but
must be fully integrated with the mainland . In his paper examining the Conundrum of IT

Bhatt Grover, 2005; using the well known edicts of RBV empirically assess distinct IT capabilities
and their relationship with competitive advantage of a firm. Their study attempts to distinguish
between a number of IT capabilities. They uncover that managerial skills is among the valuable (i.e.,
have an effect on performance), heterogeneously distributed across companies (i.e., are not the same
across companies), and imperfectly mobile (i.e., are difficult to acquire in resource markets or develop
internally) resources in firms. A similar position is affirmed by (Dehning Stratopoulos, 2003) that uses
secondary data from Computerworld to assess IT capabilities and competitive advantage. The study
assesses managerial skills and technical skills and discovers that managerial skills are positively
related to the duration of competitive advantage.
Evidence deduced from prior literature show that I.T management is manifested by the collection of
IT processes in the areas of planning, investment decision making, coordination, and control. (Peppard

processes are structured in formal and informal practices.

Quality Improvement Action Plan Implementation Essay
Quality Improvement Action Plan An estimated 30,100 central line associated bloodstream infections
(CLABSI) occur yearly in the United States intensive care units and acute care facilities (cdc.gov,

improvement initiative, including the process of planning a timeline, implementation, and evaluation
of the improvement.
Plan for Implementing CLABSI Initiative CLABSI have serious consequences, impacting the patient

Foucault s Modality As The Act Of Controlling How Bodies...
Foucault describes modality as the act of controlling how bodies move, the process they perform, and
how they enact them through which disciplines works. I partially agree with Foucault because yes!
There are some movements, body performance like dancing, playing musical instruments, etc. that can
be controlled, but there are some other common actions like when we are sad, we are crying, then that
sympathy part of our nature comes into play, and its almost impossible to control our emotions and the
body actions at that time. We all know that body is the subject of attention. Now, however, the body is
not subject to torture but to forces of discipline and control. It is very weird that we treat our body like

The Human Gene Therapy
Gene therapy is a technique that uses new genes to treat or prevent disease by replacing or adding new
effective genes. This technique is aimed to allow doctors to treat genetic disorders without the
prescribing drugs or scheduling surgery to correct the disorder. Gene therapy isn t a fully effective
method as of today. It is still undergoing tests. Several of the most common tests include introducing a
new gene into the body to fight against a disease or disorder, replacing a mutated gene with a healthy
gene, and removing a mutated gene in the body that is not functioning as it should be. Gene therapy is
seen to be a fair treatment to diseases or disorders that have no other form of cure. It is sometimes
used for inherited disorders, certain viral infections, and certain cancers. But Gene Therapy is not a
certain option for treatment as of today. It is still under study as success rates are low. Genetic
disorders affect one out ten people. Symptoms vary with each disease or disorder as some can appear
early in a person s life, while others appear at an older age. Genetic disorders cannot be prevented as
they are passed on through a family s genes and is within the DNA unlike a regular disease is caused
by bacteria or a virus. There are two possible ways a genetic disorder can be passed on to the
offspring, or child. One way is caused by dominant genes in which only one gene is altered resulting

Problems with the Presidential Elections in United States
The method of choosing the president proved to be But one of many vexing problems for the fifty five
men who assembled in Philadelphia in May 1887 (Euchner, and Maltese 2). Our forefathers were
faced with many hard decisions that would have repercussions for the next two centuries. One of the
most perplexing problems facing them was the question of how to elect a president. They had to
choose from three main systems: elect the president by congress, the people, or electors. There was
much debate over this topic in the constitutional convention until eventually the Electoral College
system was chosen to elect our president. The Electoral College system has been in place for over 200

Some people think that the system would work better if all the states were required to use the same
method of choosing electors, but the constitution protects the states rights in this case.
The legislative system never gained very much support because of too much bargaining, promises,
and payoffs. The district system eventually lost popularity because it encourages third parties, which
went against the wishes of the forefathers. This left the general ticket system in the drivers seat. This
system turned the electors into 538 of the most powerful people in the country. There are two states
that still use the district system, but the remaining 48 states use the general ticket system ( Electoral

Introduction For this situation, the discriminating part is in the execution of new framework is

The business profiles included for this situation are Leon Lassite, Vice President of Marketing, Jeff

The principle issue that emerged in the chamber of commerce was identified with issues confronted

The Knee Joint And The Rehabilitation Process
Biomechanics is a field that looks into the structure and function of biological systems such as
humans; it can be used in numerous fields. It ranges from aiding in sports performance to helping
people with daily tasks such as walking. Majority of sport related occur in the lower extremities.
Lower extremities include the hip, knee and ankle joints and the femur, tibia, fibula, and multiple foot
bones. This paper will focus on the role of the ACL, how it is injured, and the rehabilitation process.
While each component of the lower extremity has its own role, the knee is the most complex. The
knee joint performs various functions and carries most of the weight of the upper body. There are four
ligaments in the knee joint: the anterior ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It can be completely torn (ruptured), separated from the tibia or femur (avulsion), or the ligament and
part of the bone may be separated from the rest of the bone (avulsion fracture) 3. There are many
actions that can lead to an ACL tear; shear strain can occur when one is hit on the side of the knee,
simultaneous hyperextension and pivoting of the knee joint, a rapid deceleration or rapid cessation of
movement, and/or a rapid change in direction especially when running, or landing are all leading
causes2. Symptoms of an ACL tear are severe pain, a loud popping sound, swelling, inability to bear
weight, instability of knee joint, and/or loss of full range of motion at the knee joint 2,3,7.
There are certain populations that are at a high risk, athletes and women. Women are 4 to 10 times
more likely than men to tear their ACL7. In terms of biomechanics of the lower extremities there are
various theories as to why this may be. Researchers from the University of Colorado Hospital believe
that it can be attributed to an imbalance in the strength ratio between the quadriceps and hamstrings;
women tend
to use their quadriceps to slow down and this causes instability10. Since women have a wider pelvis, it
creates an increased angle and an increased stress on the ACL. Also women have a narrower femoral
notch that decreases room where the ACL is located and can pinch and possibly rupture it12. Last,
researchers believe that

Colonial Women and Her Changing Roles The colonial woman has often been imagined as a demure

Early Settlement Years Women of the seventeenth century had many reasons to accept the challenge of

Disfluency Among College Students
Additionally, disfluency has been shown to reveal metacognitive processes, or thoughts on one s own

guess the distance from one city to another, those who were presented with a disfluent questionnaire

2008). In fact, those who were presented with disfluent questions guessed an average of 1,331.7 miles,

Despite years of research, the idea of disfluency has never been utilized to help math students in a

effectively, if they had to invest more effort into reading the question because it was presented
disfluently? Additionally, would the student pay more attention to the question and therefore not make
computational errors in the following steps of his or her answer? Any application of disfluency in
mathematics has yet to be explored. I researched how disfluency affects students math scores, and if
disfluency minimizes copying errors, which occur when a student does not fully comprehend the
question and makes an accidental computation error when solving the problem or rewriting the
equation. I hypothesize that overall, adding disfluent fonts to the math questions will increase test
scores on an overall basis. In addition, on a question to question basis, word problems and questions
with written directions will have the highest correct rate in the disfluent group, while questions with
no written directions will have a higher correct rate in the fluent

The Importance Of Social Cohesion In Football
Summary
Social cohesion between the coach athlete and peer relationships in the sporting context are crucial
when all invested parties of the team must unify to provide the desired responses during competitions.
Understanding coaches and athlete s skills, preferences, abilities, moods, and habits are all critical
pieces to achieving the desired responses. Building team cohesion represents a mutually shared social
understanding where the end goal is to learn about each other to enhance the overall collective
performance. Athletes that share similar competitive game strategies with their coach, make real time
decisions in competition, and can benefit from the social conformity and control can benefit from such
investment towards the cohesive athletic relationship. If not, the team dynamic may complicate the
group cohesiveness unintentionally and possibly assume the presumption that cohesion is superior
over effective athletic talents, skills, and proper coaching.
Coaches must focus on maximizing team member effort, skill, and team level coordination and
strategy, as opposed to managing team dynamics. In highly interdependent situations, disciplined
teams work tirelessly on their ability to carry out the skills and executions as directed through the
coaches instruction. Through the process of continued development, athletic teams can evolve their
strategies in efficiency and creativity during athletic events. This requires a serious investment in
social, coach athlete, and

The Past and Present of Terrorism and Counterterrorism in...
The Past and Present of Terrorism and Counterterrorism in China
Introduction
This paper traces the evolution of China s indigenous conceptualization of terrorism and counter
terrorism practice from Imperial China to the modern era. It mainly explores the historical and cultural
underpinnings and the current pragmatic diplomacy that have shaped the evolution.
Since the concept of terrorism did not originate in China and retains much ambiguity, it is helpful to
understand the local characters within a comparative framework. The fundamental question then
becomes what is terrorism in the contemporary world. In the United States ( U.S. ), the Executive
Order 13224 defines terrorism as activity that (1) involves a violent act or an act dangerous to human
life, property, or infrastructure, and (2) appears to be intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian
population; to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or to affect the
conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, kidnapping, or hostage taking. Despite
that existing legal scholarship has paid much attention to the wide range of definitions of terrorism,
the U.S. version is sufficient for the purpose of this paper.
Interestingly, notwithstanding a want of the word terrorism in Imperial China and workable official
legal definition of terrorism in modern China, terrorist like activities have long existed and been
viewed as politically motivated violence against the state.

What Is The Theme Of The Starry Night By Vincent Van Gogh
In 1889 Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night from his room in an asylum. Most artists
paintings have something to do with their lives. This painting has a lot of different brush textures with
a lot of little details. It looks like a calm quiet night by the tone of the colors, but somewhere there is
something going on, hence the flames. By just glancing at this it may seem like there is not much
going on but by looking at some parts closely, it is noticeable. In the painting The Starry Night by
Vincent van Gogh there is a bunch of different textures added to the painting with details of a small
town during the night time.
Everyone can agree that the painting appears to be at night due to the color schemes. Choosing cool
tones instead of using vivid colors gives the interpretation on what time of day it is. The color that is
spread all throughout the painting is dark blue with a variety of types of blue fading off. Someone that
just takes a glimpse may think there are just blobs of yellow in the sky, however if you concentrate
you will realize they represent stars. The stars have a center dot in the middle with yellow and white
shades fading off into the sky making them extremely bright. Back in the day any light that came from
the sky was the source of light once the sun went down. In the top left corner, you can notice the crest
of the moon, that is vividly shaded in with a dark yellow. The painter continues his technique of

Persuasive Technology Is Important For Defining The...
Persuasive technology is the computing technology that encourages a social influence mechanism, or
a form of interaction that aims at changing the way people behave or think [XXX]. The persuasive
technology archetype is important for defining the interaction structures of systems supporting
behavioural change. Fogg [XX] lists the core concepts of persuasive technology as: (1) an attempt to
change attitudes or behaviour or both without coercion or deception, (2) a focus on human computer
interaction, (3) a focus on planned persuasive effects, (4) a focus on endogenous or built in persuasive

These methodologies integrate persuasion strategies as described by Fogg, i.e. simplifying of tracking
and reinforcement. Both strategies are employing an underlying feedback loop by mirroring back the
recorded behaviour. The simplification of tracking give the interpretation of the data to the user, but by
capturing the right data, e.g. plotting sports activities vs. weight, some behaviours can be sustained.
Fogg [XXX] has also suggested some key persuasion principles on designing effective persuasive
technologies or methodologies, which include reduction, tunnelling, tailoring, suggestion, self
monitoring, surveillance and conditioning. To briefly explain these principles so that some content can
be more easily understood later in the thesis. Reduction means using technology to simplify complex

  • 2. Summary Of Allegory Of Desolation In The Devil s Highway Luís Alberto Urrea uses the allegory of desolation in the book The Devils Highway, A True Story to illustrate life as well as death on the Devils Highway in the border region. The book accomplishes this through his usage of the word. The word desolation is defined as a state of complete emptiness or destruction. Often, the word does not appear, when this is the case, the illustration shifts to life. Morton W. Bloomfield described allegory by stating that it allows for the significance of a work to go beyond its meaning. The significance of that meaning is what may be called allegory. (Bloomfield, 1972) Desolation s meaning spans much more than its definition in The Devils Highway, A True Story. It can on different meanings, it is not limited to the definition. Desolation and Cosmos define Desolation stating, Desolation does not stand in isolation, but as a complex pattern. (Geyer, 1999) The allegory of Desolation is ones demise in the desert on the Devils Highway. In the author s note, Luís Albreto Urrea ends with the statement: But no story about death and the Devil s Highway could rightly exist without the strong presence of Desolation, in all its intimidating glory. (Urrea ) Urrea has directly indicated to us that there is no possible way that a story about death could be without desolation. The two are synonymous. Where one is the other must follow. Urrea makes this well known early on in the book by cluing the reader into the relationship that the two share. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Our hypothesis for this experiment was: As we age, the influence our first impressions of someone have on our future impressions decreases. The method of research we chose was; experiment. Before we could conduct this experiment we wrote a story in which the protagonist and antagonists roles were switched around. Meaning, that the perceived protagonist was actually the antagonist and vise versa. After writing the story we came up with seven questions which corresponded with the above story. As far as our method of research goes, it worked out perfectly. If we had done any other method it might not have worked out as well. For example, a survey would not have been as accurate as we were aiming for. By doing an experimental project we were able to get the fairly honest answers from the students. This is mainly because they did not know what we were experimenting and thus could not alter their answer to meet our demands. After our experiment was conducted we analysed the data. This data showed us that: 67% of the grade 3 students continued to believe that tyrone was the protagonist, while only 21% of the grade 6 students believed tyrone was the protagonist. This is a 46% difference between the grades. Looking at this data we can see that as our age increases, our opinions of a person being influenced by our first impression decreases. If population growth has to be limited, so does the growth in cars. Many greens would prefer to walk and cycle or to use public transport. There are certain populations that are at a high risk, athletes and women. Women are 4 to 10 times more likely than men to tear their ACL7. In terms of biomechanics of the lower extremities there are various theories as to why this may be. Researchers from the University of Colorado Hospital believe that it can be attributed to an imbalance in the strength ratio between the quadriceps and hamstrings; women tend to use their quadriceps to slow down and this causes instability10. Since women have a wider pelvis, it creates an increased angle and an increased stress on the ACL. Also women have a narrower femoral notch that decreases room where the ACL is located and can pinch and possibly rupture it12. Last, researchers believe that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. Colonial Women and Her Changing Role Essay Colonial Women and Her Changing Roles The colonial woman has often been imagined as a demure person, dressed in long skirt, apron and bonnet, toiling away at the spinning wheel, while tending to the stew at the hearth. In reality, the women of the early settlements of the United States were much more influential, strong and vital to the existence of the colonies. Her role, however, has shifted as the needs of the times dictated. Early Settlement Years Women of the seventeenth century had many reasons to accept the challenge of traversing to the New World. • 28. Disfluency Among College Students Additionally, disfluency has been shown to reveal metacognitive processes, or thoughts on one s own thoughts or ideas (Galak, Nelson, 2002). One study demonstrated that when participants were asked to guess the distance from one city to another, those who were presented with a disfluent questionnaire guessed much greater distances than those who received a fluent questionnaire (Alter, Oppenheimer, 2008). In fact, those who were presented with disfluent questions guessed an average of 1,331.7 miles, while those with the fluent questions guessed 641.9 miles. This study suggested the participants used visual text fluency as a proxy for distance estimation, and the disfluent text caused people to guess greater numbers. Stepping back, this study ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite years of research, the idea of disfluency has never been utilized to help math students in a classroom setting. For example, would a student respond to a question differently and perhaps more effectively, if they had to invest more effort into reading the question because it was presented disfluently? Additionally, would the student pay more attention to the question and therefore not make computational errors in the following steps of his or her answer? Any application of disfluency in mathematics has yet to be explored. I researched how disfluency affects students math scores, and if disfluency minimizes copying errors, which occur when a student does not fully comprehend the question and makes an accidental computation error when solving the problem or rewriting the equation. I hypothesize that overall, adding disfluent fonts to the math questions will increase test scores on an overall basis. In addition, on a question to question basis, word problems and questions with written directions will have the highest correct rate in the disfluent group, while questions with no written directions will have a higher correct rate in the fluent ... • 34. The Importance Of Social Cohesion In Football Summary Social cohesion between the coach athlete and peer relationships in the sporting context are crucial when all invested parties of the team must unify to provide the desired responses during competitions. Understanding coaches and athlete s skills, preferences, abilities, moods, and habits are all critical pieces to achieving the desired responses. Building team cohesion represents a mutually shared social understanding where the end goal is to learn about each other to enhance the overall collective performance. Athletes that share similar competitive game strategies with their coach, make real time decisions in competition, and can benefit from the social conformity and control can benefit from such investment towards the cohesive athletic relationship. If not, the team dynamic may complicate the group cohesiveness unintentionally and possibly assume the presumption that cohesion is superior over effective athletic talents, skills, and proper coaching. Coaches must focus on maximizing team member effort, skill, and team level coordination and strategy, as opposed to managing team dynamics. In highly interdependent situations, disciplined teams work tirelessly on their ability to carry out the skills and executions as directed through the coaches instruction. Through the process of continued development, athletic teams can evolve their strategies in efficiency and creativity during athletic events. • 38. The Past and Present of Terrorism and Counterterrorism in... The Past and Present of Terrorism and Counterterrorism in China Introduction This paper traces the evolution of China s indigenous conceptualization of terrorism and counter terrorism practice from Imperial China to the modern era. It mainly explores the historical and cultural underpinnings and the current pragmatic diplomacy that have shaped the evolution. Since the concept of terrorism did not originate in China and retains much ambiguity, it is helpful to understand the local characters within a comparative framework. The fundamental question then becomes what is terrorism in the contemporary world. In the United States ( U.S. ), the Executive Order 13224 defines terrorism as activity that (1) involves a violent act or an act dangerous to human life, property, or infrastructure, and (2) appears to be intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, kidnapping, or hostage taking. Despite that existing legal scholarship has paid much attention to the wide range of definitions of terrorism, the U.S. version is sufficient for the purpose of this paper. Interestingly, notwithstanding a want of the word terrorism in Imperial China and workable official legal definition of terrorism in modern China, terrorist like activities have long existed and been viewed as politically motivated violence against the state. ... • 40. What Is The Theme Of The Starry Night By Vincent Van Gogh In 1889 Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night from his room in an asylum. Most artists paintings have something to do with their lives. This painting has a lot of different brush textures with a lot of little details. It looks like a calm quiet night by the tone of the colors, but somewhere there is something going on, hence the flames. By just glancing at this it may seem like there is not much going on but by looking at some parts closely, it is noticeable. In the painting The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh there is a bunch of different textures added to the painting with details of a small town during the night time. Everyone can agree that the painting appears to be at night due to the color schemes. Choosing cool tones instead of using vivid colors gives the interpretation on what time of day it is. The color that is spread all throughout the painting is dark blue with a variety of types of blue fading off. Someone that just takes a glimpse may think there are just blobs of yellow in the sky, however if you concentrate you will realize they represent stars. The stars have a center dot in the middle with yellow and white shades fading off into the sky making them extremely bright. Back in the day any light that came from the sky was the source of light once the sun went down. In the top left corner, you can notice the crest of the moon, that is vividly shaded in with a dark yellow. The painter continues his technique of showing the amount of light both the stars ... Persuasive technology is the computing technology that encourages a social influence mechanism, or a form of interaction that aims at changing the way people behave or think [XXX]. The persuasive technology archetype is important for defining the interaction structures of systems supporting behavioural change. Fogg [XX] lists the core concepts of persuasive technology as: (1) an attempt to change attitudes or behaviour or both without coercion or deception, (2) a focus on human computer interaction, (3) a focus on planned persuasive effects, (4) a focus on endogenous or built in persuasive intent, which means that a system is intentionally designed to persuade, and (5) persuasion that may take place at either the macro or the micro ... Both strategies are employing an underlying feedback loop by mirroring back the recorded behaviour. The simplification of tracking give the interpretation of the data to the user, but by capturing the right data, e.g. plotting sports activities vs. weight, some behaviours can be sustained. Fogg [XXX] has also suggested some key persuasion principles on designing effective persuasive technologies or methodologies, which include reduction, tunnelling, tailoring, suggestion, self monitoring, surveillance and conditioning. To briefly explain these principles so that some content can be more easily understood later in the thesis. Reduction means using technology to simplify complex tasks and the goal of this strategy is to let the desired behaviour more tempting by reducing the difficulties and to make it easier for the user. Tunnelling is to provide guidance to the user by guiding the user through a predefined sequence of activities, and this strategy is being well applied in current design and implementation of general mobile applications.
