Me Talk Pretty One Day Summary
"Bonne Année" by Jean–Pierre Benoît and "Me Talk Pretty One Day" by David Sedaris are memoirs
which are very similar and different. Theme, tone, and character development all help to compare
and contrast these memoirs. Both texts have a large amount of these literary devices. "Bonne Année"
is about a Haitian child who grows up and learns to love Haiti. He is the narrator of the story. At
first, he doesn't want to go back to Haiti after dictator François Duvalier (Papa Doc) leaves his
country or the world. He is told that this will happen soon. As the narrator grows up, he watches a
world cup soccer match: Italy vs. Haiti. This is still in New York, his home from before. Italy, a
country that hasn't been scored on for two years, gets scored on by the Haitians in the match. Even
though Haiti loses, the narrator feels proud for his natal country. In "Me Talk Pretty One Day", the
narrator tries to learn French in Paris. He is given a very strict teacher who hates everyone in the
class, especially him. At the end, though, all is revealed. The narrator can perfectly understand the
teacher. The theme of both these texts is similar and different. In "Bonne Année", one quote is this:
"Perhaps the natal pull is stronger than it seems." (Benoît 36). One theme of this story is that
homeland is very important. In "Me Talk Pretty One Day", though, there is a different theme. "The
teacher proceeded to belittle everyone from German Eva, who hated laziness, to Japanese Yukari,
who loved

A Wall Of Fire Rising Summary
"Haiti is a nation debilitated by a postcolonial legacy of racial division, debt and underdevelopment.
It is also a remarkably rich nation culturally and continues and continues to produce authors,
intellectuals, and artists of note." (Munro). Edwidge Danticat is one of those notable authors.
Danticat wrote an insightful story called "A Wall of Fire Rising" to explore the historical and
economic issues of Haiti. Haiti has always had a troubled past. Guy represents Haiti's future.
National Geographic states that "There is a huge income gap between Creole–speaking black
majority and French–speaking Mulattos who, control most of the wealth" ("Haiti: Republic of
Haiti"). The low literacy rate of 53 percent contributes to this wealth gap and forces ... Show more

Guy is not the only poor person. In fact, "Haiti...is the poorest in the Western Hemisphere, Urban
poverty existing at a 65 percent level and rural at 80 percent" ("Haiti"). It is extremely hard not to be
poor in a terrible economy. Danticat even shortly mentioned child labor, which is a large factor in
Haitian contemporary issues. Guy says, "I was thinking of putting the boy on the list now, so maybe
by the time he becomes a man he can be up for a job" (372). "Many parents convey hopes of upward
social mobility as a result of their children obtaining skills, contacts, and education through their
work..." (Sommerfelt and Pedersen). However his wife was against the idea of having their son
destined to be a labor worker. "Some...[children] are forcibly recruited into prostitution or into
armed gangs" (Sommerfelt and Pedersen). It becomes clear why Little Guy's mother does not want
him entering the workforce at such a young age. "Children who live away from their parents and
who are engaged in domestic work are sometimes referred to as restavèk in Creole,...The term
illustrates the blurry distinction between fosterage arrangements and child labor" (Sommerfelt and
Pedersen). Some sources even go as far as saying that child labor is merely a result of slavery. "
[Child Labor] is less a part of the heritage from colonial times, slavery, or the nineteenth century"
(Haiti Soldarite Internationale 2001) Although Haitians

The Catholic Church And The Church
The Catholic Church has always been one to hand out praise fairly freely. There is a patron saint for
everything, from plague to beekeeping to flowers. There are patron saints for specific cities, patron
saints for specific trades, and patron saints for almost any object that comes to mind. However, in
the past, the process of becoming a saint, known as canonization, was at the least thoroughly
investigative. The Catholic Church has strict beliefs to be upheld and represented. For example,
charity work has always been an enormous part of the Church and its mission. The entirety of the
Catholic Church, including any and all charities affiliated with the Church, donates approximately
$30 billion to charity annually in the U.S. alone (Jacobson). Any person who is on the track to
canonization must be one who upholds those values, that same generosity that is so ingrained in the
Church. In September of 2016, Mother Teresa is going to be beatified by Pope Francis. While
beatification, or the act of confirming that a person has been in heaven since their death, is not the
final step in canonization, it is the biggest and most important part of the process. However, Mother
Teresa's charity work was not as advantageous as the Catholic Church has let on thus far. Although
she is credited with providing food and healthcare to the poor, the terrible quality of her treatment,
her lack of qualification, and her fraudulent behaviors are too often overlooked; therefore, Mother
Teresa should

Similarities Between Hispaniola And Haiti
The Dominican Republic and Haiti
Imagine yourself as a businessperson on a trip to the island of Hispaniola to check on how
production is faring. You land in Santo Domingo to transfer to a short commuter flight to Port–au–
Prince. During the flight, you gaze outside your window to admire the breathtaking view of the
Sierra de Baoruco, with its luscious forests. As the plane approaches the Haiti–Dominican Republic
border, you notice that the land has been completely denuded of trees directly on the other side of
the border, creating a clear demarcation between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
This physical border is only one indication of the clear contrast between the two countries that share
Hispaniola. According ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During Napoleon's reign in France, Napoleon sought to control the entire island of Hispaniola
through control of Spain and the reacquisition of Haiti. Harsh rule by the governors–general induced
loyalists to form the movement La Reconquista to rise up in order to restore Spanish sovereignty.
(Metibag 91)
Though the colony was returned to Spain in 1809, weak support led to a decay in colonial
infrastructure, leading to a revolt, led by José Núñez de Cáceres and Don Manuel Carvajal, which
declared "Spanish Haiti" independent. However, the new nation was vulnerable, and Boyer
immediately seized on the opportunity to unite the island for security purposes, seeking to impose
"Haitianization" on Santo Domingo economically and politically. Such aspects of "Haitianization"
included abolition of slavery, land redistribution, settlement of Haitians, and forced cultivation of
crops in a region dominated by cattle ranchers. (Moya Pons 123, 133) An insurrection group named
los trinitarios seized on the discontent of the Dominican people in the 1830s and 1840s, leading to
independence in 1844. (Black 19)
The new republic was founded on anti–Haitianism in reaction to the occupation and control by a
commercial bourgeoisie, which inevitably caused factioning among supporters of independence and
protectionism by Spain. Authoritarianism was employed by the factions–the protectionists,

Foreign Aid Intervention And Poor Effective Governance...
On January 12, 2010, a devastating earthquake of 7.0 magnitude shook Haiti and its residents. An
estimate of more than 250,000 deaths was recorded, along with 300,000 injuries, and 1,200,000
people left displaced with no access to proper food, water or shelter. This essay presents a critique of
foreign aid intervention and poor effective governance within the country of Haiti. The essay will
begin with a history of Haiti's political, economic and social aspects that contribute to today's slow
efforts of recovery. The paper will then describe and analyze the disaster under the four pillars of
emergency management including: Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery. The analysis
under the four pillars will help understand the rationale for the absence of normal day to day
procedures in Haiti today. Additionally, the paper will give recommendations on how to improve the
situation in Haiti and risk reductions for future possible disasters. Despite the slow developments in
Haiti, the lack of safety officials has failed to recognize the impounding situation in Haiti. This has
resulted in a severe dependency on foreign aid.
History
The power struggle between the citizens of Haiti and the Haitian Government has been an ongoing
process for centuries. Months after the earthquake, Haitians were still seen searching for
employment opportunities, whereas the nation clearly had an intensive amount of work to be done in
order to recover from the disaster. A year before the

Insula Before The Haitian Revolution
In 1942, Christopher Columbus took possession of a colony that he named Insula Hispania, which
means the Spanish island. It also went by the name Saint–Domingue and is now known as the
country of Haiti (Feb. 1st, Regina Wellner). The country is located on the west side of Hispaniola,
sharing the same island as the Dominican republic in the Caribbean sea. The colony thrived
economically in its early days because of the coffee and sugar industry, which were primarily run by
slaves. It was even nicknamed "The pearl of the Antilles" because it was the richest French colony
in the west and produced 60% of the world's coffee and 40% of the world's sugar (Feb 1st, Regina
Wellner). It was the taxes and income from the sugar industry in Saint–Domingue ... Show more

The earthquake hit just 15 miles south of the capital Port–au–Prince and took more than 200,000
lives. Along with the lives lost, Haiti's economy suffered greatly as well as it is said to have created
up to $8.5 billions of dollars in damage. 80% of schools were destroyed in this disaster as well as
the airports, government buildings and all the roads (Amadeo). It's even more devastating to learn
that this earthquake occurred right when Haiti got approved for a trade agreement with the United
States that was helping to grow their economy (Amadeo). Haiti did receive about $13.5 billion in aid
which helped to clean up the streets and build the country back to normal as much as possible

To What Extent Has The United States Intervention? Haiti...
Introduction
In this essay, I will be assessing to what extent has the United States intervention in Haiti from 1915
to 1934 contributed to Haiti 's underdevelopment. The United States military occupation which
ended in 1934 created political instability, corruption and the dependence of foreign aid which
negatively impacts Haiti 's economy. The claim of this present paper is that the United States has
contributed to Haiti 's economical underdevelopment to a large extent . I will begin this paper by
providing some background information on Haiti pre–intervention, address the direct effects of the
United States occupation of Haiti and, furthermore explain how this occupation has set the
precedence for other interventions from the international community. The events which will be
analyze in order to determine the occupation's role in Haiti economical underdevelopment are as
follow : Duvalierism 1957–1986 , Coup d'Etat of 1991–1994 , Coup d'etat of 2004 ,2010 Earthquake
and Elections and the 2011 Cholera Epidemic . To defend this argument, I will be using both
primary sources from both Haitian and American Historians and documents such as newspaper
articles and court documents which will express the sentiment of the time. United States Occupation

Jean-Claude Van Damme And Bipolar Disorder
Jean–Claude Van Damme and Bipolar Disorder We live in a society where empathy is given to only
certain people and under only certain circumstances. In reality, empathy and validation were not
designed to work this way; sadly, we still live in a society that often does not offer support to
someone diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It was for that reason; Jean–Claude Van Damme suffered
in silence for many years. His strong outward appearance hid his constant battle with a very serious
form of bipolar disorder, which is defined as rapid–cycling bipolar disease. This disorder is a
treatable illness marked by extreme changes in mood, thought, energy, and behavior. Although, there
is a false stigma attached to this illness, it is not a character flaw or a sign of personal weakness.
Jean–Claude Van Damme is a martial artist, actor, and director. He was born in Belgium on October
18, 1960. As a young child, Van Damme was small and weak. At age eleven, his father introduced
him to martial arts as a way for him to become more physically fit. He studied Karate, Kickboxing,
Taekwondo, and Muay Thai. He excelled at all of them. At age fifteen, he began his professional
Karate career and at age eighteen, he launched the California Gym in Brussels. It was during this
time, he started experiencing extreme highs and extreme lows. Behind Closed Doors is a
documentary about Van Damme. In this film he describes his mood swings as being so severe that

The French Revolution In Haiti
Haiti splits the island of Hispaniola with its neighbor, the Dominican Republic in the Greater
Antilles of the Caribbean Sea. Established by Spain in 1492, control of Haiti was ceded to the
French and the island began to flourish under its new rulers. The slave trade played an enormous
part of the country's history, at the time accounting for nearly a third of the entire slave trade across
the Atlantic. Controlled for years by the French, "Haiti – then called Saint–Domingue – was the
Pearl of the Antilles, one of the richest islands in France's empire. In the 1780s, Haiti exported 60%
of all the coffee and 40% of all the sugar consumed in Europe: more than all of Britain's West Indian
colonies combined," (Henley, 2010). It wasn't until nearly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Due to the ongoing French Revolution back at home, the war ended in 1803. The French simply
could not afford to be fighting two wars at once. On January 1, 1804, the first, and only, country
born of a slave revolt, was born. However, this was not the end of French involvement. France
demanded 150 million francs in reparations for the war in order to be recognized as a republic. Von
Tunzelmann, a contributor to the article by Henley, said that "...Haiti was paying reparations to
France from 1825 until 1947. It took out huge loans from American, German and French banks. By
1900, Haiti was spending about 80% of its national budget on loan repayments. By the time the
original reparations and interest were paid off, the place was basically destitute and trapped in a
spiral of debt," (Henley, 2010). Tired of dealing with a failed government, another revolution began
in 1911. This revolution led to a long period of US occupation. Following failed dictators, regimes,
and governments, François ¬"Papa Doc" Duvalier became the leader of Haiti in 1957. His regime
was one of darkness, death, and oppression, considered one of the worst in the history of the

Persuasive Stereotypes Made By Volvo
We try to persuade people all the time. Whether it is our parents in order to get a dog, our teachers to
get a better grade, or our boss to negotiate a higher wage. However, sometimes the intended goal
turns out to be an unexpected consequence. So, what key elements make up a great persuasive
speech? To answer this question, it is best to bring in a real–world example. An advertisement made
by Volvo showcases a variety of different persuasive tactics that attempt not only show off certain
qualities of their car, but to also influence their audience to buy their car. A variety of factors will be
analyzed such as salience, message characteristics, and source credibility. Through thorough
examination of these different features, along with the incorporation of research studies, it will be
seen that some of these tactics are more persuasive and work better within certain segments of the
target audience. Advertisements are usually not meant for everyone, but target a specific subgroup
within a population that could benefit from the message or the product. Volvo, safe to assume, is not
targeting children in their ads, but rather people who may or may not be looking for a car at the
moment. Other demographic variables are intertwined with these groups, but are not explicitly
stated. Throughout the succeeding paragraphs it will be more apparent on how these persuasive
factors attempt to reach out to the audience and how successful they may be. Volvo incorporates

Essay on Krik! Krak!
"Between the pool and the Gardenias" portrays the story of a poor woman that finds an abandoned
baby on the street and decides to keep her. The story is set in Haiti, a poor country consumed by
malnutrition, abandonment, and suffering. Edwidge Danticat uses the main character, a poor, lower
class, black woman from Ville Rose, to make a political commentary on the situation in Haiti. The
story suggests the desire of poor people to escape their harsh reality and become consumed in a
world outside their own.
Danticat makes various social commentaries in "Between the Pool and the Gardenias." The story
begins by describing a baby left abandoned in the middle of the street. It seems she has been left
there for at least hours without anyone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the woman finds the baby, she acknowledges all the signs that the baby is dead but seems to
create a separate reality. She becomes delusional and takes the baby in as if it was hers; feeding,
bathing, and caring for it constantly. She even imagines that the house she is a mid in belongs to her,
the baby, and the pool man. In the end she says "We made a pretty picture standing there. Rose, me,
and him." The woman's delusional state is provoked by her inability to maintain a family. She
desperately wanted a family of her own. The author constantly uses words like "my" and "mine" that
show possession. The woman's way of coping with tremendous loss and suffering was creating an
alternate world. Danticat adds the woman's escape from reality to portray the desperate desire of
Haitians to prosper from a life of poverty. Becoming delusional was the only way many people
could cope with the horrors of the government. Under the rule of Dictator Jean–Claude ''Baby Doc"
Duvalier, Haiti underwent horrific and traumatizing events. Many hatians like the woman of the
story, learned to disconnect herself from the ghastly situations and escape into a better life. Danticat
adds another example of this in the story. She describes "My grandmother Defile who died with a
bald head in a prison because God had given her wings." Her grandmother had been a victim of the
1937 massacre at the border of Dominican Republic.

Within the unprecedented challenges posed by the explosive growth of urban population, the lack of
water supply and sanitation is one of the most urgent and harmful issues. The relationship between
water supply and cities' welfare is very important, as cities require a huge supply of fresh water, and
in turn, the way in which the city makes use of water has an impact on the availability of fresh
water. It is impossible to consider a city as being 'sustainable', if it cannot ensure safe access to

Sammy As A Hero In The Story Of A & PAnd Araby
Both the stories of "A&P" and "Araby" revolve around a goal that seems unreachable to the reader.
Sammy has a quest to impress Queenie, a beach girl that travels with her two sidekicks. The narrator
is in love with his friend's sister and thinks that by buying her a gift he will receive her love. Both of
these character are left feeling unsatisfied with their endings, but have a moment of realization about
their new lives. They both don't get the girl but have to understand that their expectations were too
high and that life has much more to offer.
Sammy plays the hero in the short story of A&P. By quitting his job he shows a symbol of rejection
to social norms; he showed qualities of a hero and gained the independence that came with that
action. Part of this action was influence by his quest for Queenies attention. During the story he
romanticized her "long white prima legs", white shoulders, arms, bikini, and chest bones. Her
existence was his threshold of enthusiasm he felt for life. Queenie and her two friends walk in
dressed in bikinis with no shoes into a public store. Manager Lengel had made the girls feel
uncomfortable with his comments about their appearance, he consecutively told the girls, "This isn't
the beach." or "We want you decently dressed when you come in here." There exists these social
norms that all must follow but in this story women are specifically restricted. Sammy is projecting
his feelings against these norms by saying to his manager, "You

Pulp Fiction Narrative
Everyone has a favorite movie they love to watch, which triggers their inner emotion for why they
love that particular movie. Some movies may bring tears of joy to a person's heart and some movies
may keep the audience on their toes for what might happen next with action and excitement. Those
action and excitement movies have different techniques which makes the movie stands out in a
viewer eyes. In the 1994 film Pulp Fiction directed by Quentin Taratino and 2015 Mad Max Fury
Road directed by George Miller are arguable known to be two of the best movies when it comes
down to action and excitement. These two movie are both suspenseful, breath–taking, and thrilling
that will keep your toes for what is about to happen in the next scene. Both of these movies use
some of the same technique and tactual which makes the audience stay engaged into the movie. In
the film Pulp Fiction there are a considerable measure of components to this film which makes it an
incredible motion picture to watch and love. The structure of the film to the development to the
tension scenes of the film all adds up to make this movie sensational. Some portion of the
motivation behind why this movie is so darling is on the grounds that it will dependably keep you on
the edge of toes to perceive what will occur next. Seeing this film out of the blue may get puzzling
at first since its bounces forward and backward from four unique stories which all meet up toward
the end for redemption. One of the

The Haitian government has been plagued with corruption from the beginning of its existence. Haiti
has been faced with many foul leaders and thus brought times of despair for the Haitian people. The
empowerment of poor leadership has led to a country that "has never known a period free of
tyranny, repression, political conflict, racial animosity, and economic hardship" (Haggerty). Haiti's

The Pros And Cons Of The CIA
The CIA, otherwise known as the Central Intelligence Agency, is a federal agency that is
independent and has the responsibilities of providing the country of the United States with national
security intelligence. The CIA is in charge of gathering information that is going on from other
countries in order to help our own national security to become stronger, and to be able to protect the
citizens of the United States better. However, what happens when the CIA tries to protect it's citizens
by screwing over other countries? What happens when the CIA is responsible for destroying other
countries' governments or placing leaders where we do not belong as a country to try and control
politics that we should not even be involving ourselves in. While the CIA is meant to have good
intentions for providing our country with national security, a lot of times the United States is
responsible for meddling in affairs we never belonged in which cause harm, devastation, or death to
the countries we force ourselves upon. In early 1951, the nationalization of Iran's oil industry by
Mosaddegh was the trigger for the United Kingdom to begin discussion with the United States to
overthrow Mosaddegh and return the power to the shah. When the coup attempt was thwarted, the
CIA decided to call off continuing with the operation because they did not want it to get traced back

Haiti's poverty When people start to talk about Haiti, the first word come out in my mind is
"poverty", and second is "tragedies". Unlike other countries, Haiti's problems are continuous for
decades. According to Haiti's Disasters, Noriega claims that Haiti is not only suffering from natural
disasters, but also a human disaster. After the 2010 Haiti earthquake, more and more countries start
to put their attention on Haiti and providing humanitarian help. However, Haiti's poverty is not an
accident or simply caused by a natural disaster, but a necessary consequence of both external and
internal issues, which involves historical, economic, political, environmental issues and influence
from other countries. First of all, Haiti's poverty is historical. Anup Shah introduces Haiti in her
article "Haiti" as: "Before the 'discovery' of Hispaniola (the island that is now Haiti and the
Dominican Republic) by Christopher Columbus, there was a thriving civilization of native
Americans, known as the Arawak–speaking Taino Indians. The arrival of Columbus and European
colonialism brought disease, slavery, misery and death. They were soon wiped out from the island
and black slave labor from Africa was needed to replace them. What was thought of as a rich and
profitable Western colony, Haiti today is the poorest country in the western hemisphere" (Shah, A,
2010). Haiti's problems are long–term, which

Examples Of The Quest Cycle In Makina's Journey
The Quest Cycle in Makina's Journey Yuri Herrera's Signs Preceding the End of the World is a
contemporary novel set in the 21st century in the Southwest. The story follows the journey of a
protagonist named Makina, who goes to the North in search of her brother. During her journey,
Makina faces many trials and test before ultimately transforming and being reborn with a new
identity. Although Herrera's story is written in the present–day, it is structured on an ancient pattern.
Aaron Brady, author of "Underneath the Darkness," explains, "But it is a new genre made old, and
the surface of the present has a way of breaking open and revealing the ancient depth beneath."

In the following stage, the "Call to Adventure," a hero is chosen and called, in the form of a
message, to go on a journey (Vogler 100–104). Vogler also adds that a "string of coincidences" can
urge the hero to take the call of adventure (100). Herrera shows this correlation to the Quest Cycle in
his story by explaining, "Her mother, Cora, had called her and said 'Go take this paper to your
brother. I don't like to send you, child, but who else can a trust it to, a man?' " (12). Herrera shows
that Makina is chosen by her mother's message to be the hero in the Quest Cycle. Similarly, the
"coincidence" that urges Makina to go on the adventure occurs when the ground collapses and she
sees the man disappear into the hole (11). After Makina is called to go on this journey, she must
cross a boundary between the two worlds, known as the "Threshold Crossing," and make her
journey into the "new world." Volger explains that "Threshold Guardians," people that try to block
and test the hero, are commonly seen in this stage of the Quest Cycle; they can start as enemies and
turn into allies (129). Often the hero must ignore the guardian or reflect their energy back onto them

Haiti Economic Growth Essay
Most modern sources agree that the French anthropologist Alfred Sauvy coined the term "third
world" in an article published in the French magazine L'Observateur, on August 14, 1952. Although,
the expression was first used in prerevolutionary France to identify the lowest ruling class, the
phrase became popular after World War II. It seems clear that the wealthy Caribbean island Haiti,
which gained its independence from France in 1804, and had experienced some real economic
growth should also be enjoying real economic development in the twenty first century. What is not
clear is how and why the island's economic growth and social development has placed Haiti the
twentieth poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere? Although it was the wealthiest ... Show

While, Haiti economy revolves around agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, minerals and gold there
has been little economic growth and economic development to match the United States growth. This
analogy is made with the United States of America, because Haiti was the second in the Americas
after the United States to gain its independence.
Payne and Nassar tell us in chapter six of Politics and culture in the developing world that the real
challenge of economic development is in improving the quality of the peoples' lives. This
development occurs with economic growth.
Growth is usually associated with the development of natural resources and the construction of an
infrastructure to effectively utilize those resources. As countries mine copper, produce petroleum,
manufacture steel, grow and process agricultural products, and make automobiles, they also build
roads, bridges, ports, airports, railways, and lighthouses; develop communication networks; generate
electricity; and provide reliable mail service, water, and medical services. The infrastructure, roads,
bridges, etc.–is essential to

Francois Duvalier's Power: General Paul Mathime
After earning a degree in medicine, Francois Duvalier began working as a staff physician for several
Haiti hospitals. Nine years later, he became a member in a campaign to prevent the spread of several
tropical Haitian diseases. Selected for two government jobs, the Director General of the National
Public Health Service and later the Minister of Health and Labor, he was an acquaintance of
President Dumarasias Estime. Duvalier left the government and was forced to hide when General
Paul Magloire overthrew Estime. When Magloire resigned in 1956, Louis Dejoie and Duvalier both
campaigned for the election. By using a combination of appealing to the majority of the people and
describing his opponent as part of a problem for the country, Duvalier won the election. ... Show

He then violated the new constitution 4 years after it had gone into effect. In 1964, he declared
himself president for life, which seven other presidents had done before. He replaced the Armed

younger men who had more loyalty. This helped him to improve an army unit into the Presidential
Guard. Its main purpose was to maintain Duvalier's power. In 1961, he established a group known as
the tonton makouts, which expanded his authority into another areas. In 1966, he nominated a

The Difficult Transition from Duvalierism to Democracy in Haiti
Haiti has historically been the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, suffering from
mismanagement of resources and corrupt rule by the elites. The rule of the Duvaliers had
concentrated the wealth of the state in the Duvalier family and its political allies, the Duvalierists.
This had been the way Haiti was always run since its independence in 1804: the wealthy, French–
speaking elite ruling as an oligarchy or dictatorship over the poor, Creole–speaking masses. The
events that occurred from 1986 to 1995 sought to change Haitian society forever in a transition from
predatory dictatorship to popular democracy. However, that path would not be smooth, as the ...

In 1964, he completed the transition to a personalist dictatorship by declaring himself "president ad
vitem aeternam" by "popular decree." (Rotberg 107) As his grip on power increased, the exodus of
the former elite and educated Haitians increased, leaving Haiti with less skilled workers and an elite
that was increasingly black and increasingly loyal to Duvalier. However, he also held onto support
from the mulatto bourgeoisie by allowing them to maintain control of the economic sector. Thus, he
was able to maintain control over the masses through the control of the two elites and the tontons
macoutes–a coalition that was called the Duvalierists. (Fatton 56)
Just before Duvalier died in 1971, he named his son, Jean–Claude, also known as "Baby Doc," as
his successor. Having grown up in the prestige of Papa Doc, Baby Doc abandoned his relationship
with the black bourgeoisie formally upon his marriage to a mulatto, Michele Bennett, whose father
grew rich from her relationship with Baby Doc and used the country's money to enrich herself
materially. (Gold 221) Taking advantage of increased relative liberalization resulting from a shift to
an export–oriented economy, opponents of the regime started to express their displeasure at its
authoritarian nature through such media as the Church's Radio Soleil and the newspaper Le Petit
Samedi Soir. This was sustained through the Carter

An additional justification on agreeing with Gandhi's quote pertains to the failed economic growth
and overall development caused by the tyrannical control of a country, leading to a breakdown of
the regime. The term "economic growth" is defined as an increase in a country's productive capacity
as measured by comparing the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the respective country per annum.
A plethora of categories must be taken into account to determine the degree of economic growth,
such as the increase in capital stock, advances in technology, and the improvement of literacy levels.

After the execution of Tsar Nicholas II during the Russian Revolution of 1917, the newly formed
Bolshevik government developed a philosophy of socialism, with the gradual transition to
communism. The Bolsheviks intended to eliminate national differences and instead, replace
diversity with a monolithic state based on a unified economic and political system through
communism. However, the project of creating a socialist state proved to be problematic through
several justifications. First, the Soviets underestimated the degree in which the non–Russian ethnic
groups in the country would resist assimilation into a Russianized state. The Basmachi Movement
lasted from 1916–1934, when the Muslim people of Central Asia revolted against Soviet control of
their territory and way of life. Secondly, the Soviet's economic planning lacked to meet the needs of
the state, and instead focussed on the arms race with the United States. According to Lawrence
Sullivan, Coordinator of Information of the US House of Representatives, "communism has failed
for forty–three years to produce enough goods to keep abreast of Russia's normal population
growth." Sullivan adds that in present–day Russia, the food supply, housing, education,
transportation, and gross national products are "far and away" from the rest of Europe. The lack of
economic planning then resulted in an economic decline, and eventually the need for national
reform was obvious. The last Soviet leader, Mikhail

Haiti. The political climate before Francois Duvalier ("Papa Doc") was largely unstable with
Dessalines, Petion, and Christophe failing to create a unified and prosperous country. Later, in the
early 20th century, Haiti's government was plagued by the United States being present in the country

A government's duty is to run a country with fair laws and regulations, however, when the leaders
themselves are abusing their power, something needs to be done. In order for the people to stop the
government from abusing its power, they will sacrifice their lives to achieve social change. Almost
all the dictators of Latin American countries abuse their power. In Nicaragua, the Somoza family
preserves their power by relying on election fraud, murder, torture, and arrests of any political
opposition. They rip off humanitarian aid from relief organizations. The blatant disregard and lack
of shame led to the formation of several opposition groups against the Somoza regime. In the novel,
Alvarez clearly demonstrates how Trujillo abuses his power. Even though he owns many
extravagant mansions, he often deprives the people of Dominican Republic by making laws that are
unjust and taking their land and selling them at a low price. Trujillo is notorious for his reputation
with women, and how he immorally has relations with many women and girls and he even violates
them. When the Maribal

Haiti was once the first black independent republic in the world and the richest island in the
Caribbean. Today Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest
countries in the world. What could have happened to Haiti in almost two hundred years of history?
The country experienced repeated civil war and foreign intervention. Haiti is not isolated from the
international world. Thus, it was not out of concern for ordinary Haitians that the United States
intervened in Haiti. It was out of concern for profit and stability within the United States' own
backyard. The purpose of this paper is to show the negative aspect that the United States had played

Over one thousand miles of roads and two hundred bridges were built. The occupiers reconstructed
the French irrigation system that Haiti had, new wharves and acetylene lighthouses were built.
Theaters and parks were restored or built from the ground up. The public health systems were
enlarged; hospitals and clinics were set up across the country. Even American doctors came to train
Haitian doctors, and some Haitian doctors went to the U.S. to study (Thomas Smith: 291, video).
These are the only things that Haiti benefited from this intervention.
Another achievement made during this transition was that the Marines from the US established
reformation of the Haitian army. They replaced it by a National Police Force (La Garde d'Haiti) that
dominated Haitian politics ever since. This army had been conceived as a nonpartisan peacekeeping
force that would help ensure the right kind of political stability. During the occupation it did so.
Afterward, however the existence of such a force ended by helping political strongmen stay in
power.
"The Haitian Garde was especially created to fight against other Haitians. It received its baptism of
fire in combat against its countrymen. And the Garde, like the army it was to sire, has indeed never
fought anyone but Haitians. Its most important campaign was its participation alongside the Marines

An Analysis of the Movie, Double Impact
The movie opens twenty–five years ago in Hong Kong. The parents of two twin babies, Alex and
Chad, had borrowed money from Raymond Zhang and
Nigel Griffith, two lead smugglers. They needed the money in order to build a tunnel between Hong
Kong and the mainland. After the tunnel was built and the money collected, Nigel Griffith and
Raymond Zhang had a gang of hit men massacre Alex and Chad's family. Frank Avery, a friend of
the family, races into the scene and finds the parents already dead. The two babies are in the back
seat with a maid. She takes Alex and flees the scene. Frank sees Chad left behind and takes him and

Alex arrives and head butts Chad. When Chad revives from being knocked unconscious, Frank
convinces the two brothers to help avenge the deaths of their parents.
The setting for this movie is very appropriate. They are in Hong Kong where the laws are not up to
par with the American Style. This allows the corrupt trades of Zhang, Griffith, and Alex to go on
hardly disturbed by the Hong Kong police.
The dominant theme in Double Impact is vengeance and it is seen quite readily once the action gets
rolling. Alex and Chad are out to kill Zhang and Griffith for the massacre of their parents. As the
movie rolls on, Alex becomes suspicious of Chad because he thinks that he is playing around with
his girlfriend Danielle. We see Alex's thoughts of Chad with Danielle as he becomes drunker and his
mind imagines that they are having sex together.
These thoughts enrage Alex and he fights his own brother.
The whole movie was directed and acted very well considering Chad and
Alex are both played by the same person, Jean–Claude Van Damme, which justifies the movie's
name, Double Impact. The main character Jean–Claude
Van Damme plays more roles than just casting. He is also the fight choreographer and one of the
producers. His talent of kickboxing has come through in his first great achievement where he played

The relationship between the values of cause and effect is formed through the significance of time

is dependent on these three variants. Though it is a commonly held belief that events of the past, and
the actions of individuals in the past, have no connection to the world of today, nor any impact upon
what is happening in the present. But, the truth is that there are a large number of features that make
the past vitally effective in the present (Lieb p.155). Thus, it would be considered inappropriate to

The events that transpired in the late 1980s were a catalyst for the international community to

As an effort to promote democracy, the United States began influencing elections in Haiti
(Torgman). In 1990 with pressure mounting from the International community, Haiti held a
moderately fair presidential election. With over fifty percent of registered voter participation; of that
sixty–seven percent of the voters supported the new Haitian President Jean–Bertrand Aristide. This

Therefore, the Haiti election was a remarkable step towards democracy.
Nonetheless, the president's popularity faded soon after the election. Aristide lost support from

Who Do Not Study The Past, The Great American Philosopher...

Melissa Lichota
"Those who do not study the past, the great American philosopher and historian George Santayana
once observed, are condemned to repeat it." (Schmidt, 1) This is not only true for the present we live
in today, but is held true for the future tomorrow. In 2010 Haiti was hit with traumatic earthquake
that has still left 150,000 people not re–housed and live in tents. "It was devastating because a
history of adverse social conditions and extreme ecological fragility primed Port–au–Prince for
massive loss of life and destruction when the ground began shaking on January 12th." (Farmer, 3)
The history of Haiti has caused the country a great struggle to rebuild after the earthquake and the
1825 settlement between Haiti and France, the occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1934, and the
Duvalier dictatorships from 1957 to 1986 events prove that history has a substantial impact upon the
future after a devastating "natural" disaster.
Haiti's independence created new difficulties and led to a spiral of independent debt. "The prospect
of slave rebellion terrified every slave–holding elite and now their own restless slaves had a bloody
example to emulate." (Phillips, 4) Other colonies relied heavily on slave labor and could not risk
losing property, which resulted in Haiti being quarantined to hide the independence. Slave

A Country Of Chaos : Haiti
A Country in Chaos: Haiti
Haiti is the poorest county in the Western Hemisphere, but it once was a very wealthy nation. Haiti
shares the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean with the Dominican Republic. They are blessed
with beautiful mountains and beaches, copper, gold, and oil. At one point, Haiti was more wealthy
than the British colonies that were located in the Caribbean. Haiti is rich with natural resources, so
why is Haiti the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere? They are the poorest nation because
they have a lot of natural disasters, they have a history of an unstable government, and they have a
poor healthcare system. Since Haiti is located between tectonic plates, it is prone to natural disasters.
Natural disasters have forced the country farther into poverty due to the cost of damages. A good
example is the earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010. The earthquake caused billions of dollars' worth of
damages. Haiti was already a very poor country before the disaster, but the earthquake forced people
farther into poverty. The families of Haiti did not have insurance, resulting in many families left
homeless. The first estimate for deaths caused by the earthquake was more than 250,000 and
affected approximately 3,500,000 lives (Pallardy, 2016). The first shock measured a magnitude of
7.0 with two aftershocks that measured magnitudes of 5.9 and 5.5. The following few days consisted
of multiple other aftershocks measuring 5.9. The most affected area was about 15

Comparing Napoleon's Rise To Power In Animal Farm And...
How do dictators gain control of their people? How are they able to rise into power and place the
fate of their nations into their own greedy hands? How are they able to devastate the lands they call

always look good until the last ten minutes." While this is not literally true, both Napoleon, an
animal character from Animal Farm, and ex–Haitian dictator Jean–Claude Duvalier are dissimilar in
the way that they rise to power and in the laws they impose, but are alike because they appear to be
great leaders until years of tyranny ultimately reveal their true characters. Napoleon's rise to power

Napoleon's laws and policies are often meant to repress the animals and keep them silent, malleable,

longer allowed to be sung (Orwell 78). At the end of the novel, after the Seven Commandments

Ironically, the true meaning of this statement is that all animals are not equal and that the pigs view
themselves as better in every way. Duvalier's laws and policies were not quite as oppressive. "He

The Hero's Journey In Whirligig By Paul Fleischman
In stories, there is always a pattern that they all have in common. This certain pattern is known as
the Hero's Journey. There are varying descriptions of the Hero's Journey steps but only the steps that
are set by the teacher is used. These steps are the "The Call", "Allies", "Preparation", "The
Guardians of the Threshold", "Crossing the Threshold", "Road of Trials", "Saving Experience",
"Transformation", and "Sharing the Gift".This essay is explaining what the Hero's Journey is in the
book Whirligig by Paul Fleischman. The step that is coming up is the Call which is when the hero
starts their journey.
The Call occurs when Mrs. Zamora requests Brent to make the whirligigs in the corners of the
United States. For example, Mrs. Zamora tells ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With this sentence, you can see that Brent only prepared materials to build the whirligig. This shows
that Brent is prepared to go on his journey because he has all of his necessaries in his luggage for the
quest. Also, this shows that Brent still is self conscious, comparing others to him. Therefore his
preparation is done, and he next needs to cross the Threshold blocking him from starting his quest.
There are no Guardians of the Threshold in this story unless Brent's parents are counted in the first
place. The book stated that "Brent's parent raised one objection after another" (Fleischman 41). The
Guardians of the Threshold usually prevents the hero from going on his quest, and this statement
shows that Brent's parents are objecting on the quest. If their objection is fulfilled, Brent wouldn't
have gone on the quest at first. This fits the standards of being the Guardians of the Threshold but
nothing is done. In conclusion, it could be called the Guardians of the Threshold by some.
A main problem in Brent's journey that is a Threshold of sorts is that he's self conscious. He doesn't
believe he has much of a future after his journey and compares to other people. In the book, it says
"He was no longer of their kind and never will be" (Fleischman 36). This sentence proves that he
feels

Me Talk Pretty One Day Summary

  • 1. Me Talk Pretty One Day Summary "Bonne Année" by Jean–Pierre Benoît and "Me Talk Pretty One Day" by David Sedaris are memoirs which are very similar and different. Theme, tone, and character development all help to compare and contrast these memoirs. Both texts have a large amount of these literary devices. "Bonne Année" is about a Haitian child who grows up and learns to love Haiti. He is the narrator of the story. At first, he doesn't want to go back to Haiti after dictator François Duvalier (Papa Doc) leaves his country or the world. He is told that this will happen soon. As the narrator grows up, he watches a world cup soccer match: Italy vs. Haiti. This is still in New York, his home from before. Italy, a country that hasn't been scored on for two years, gets scored on by the Haitians in the match. Even though Haiti loses, the narrator feels proud for his natal country. In "Me Talk Pretty One Day", the narrator tries to learn French in Paris. He is given a very strict teacher who hates everyone in the class, especially him. At the end, though, all is revealed. The narrator can perfectly understand the teacher. The theme of both these texts is similar and different. In "Bonne Année", one quote is this: "Perhaps the natal pull is stronger than it seems." (Benoît 36). One theme of this story is that homeland is very important. In "Me Talk Pretty One Day", though, there is a different theme. "The teacher proceeded to belittle everyone from German Eva, who hated laziness, to Japanese Yukari, who loved ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. A Wall Of Fire Rising Summary "Haiti is a nation debilitated by a postcolonial legacy of racial division, debt and underdevelopment. It is also a remarkably rich nation culturally and continues and continues to produce authors, intellectuals, and artists of note." (Munro). Edwidge Danticat is one of those notable authors. Danticat wrote an insightful story called "A Wall of Fire Rising" to explore the historical and economic issues of Haiti. Haiti has always had a troubled past. Guy represents Haiti's future. National Geographic states that "There is a huge income gap between Creole–speaking black majority and French–speaking Mulattos who, control most of the wealth" ("Haiti: Republic of Haiti"). The low literacy rate of 53 percent contributes to this wealth gap and forces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Guy is not the only poor person. In fact, "Haiti...is the poorest in the Western Hemisphere, Urban poverty existing at a 65 percent level and rural at 80 percent" ("Haiti"). It is extremely hard not to be poor in a terrible economy. Danticat even shortly mentioned child labor, which is a large factor in Haitian contemporary issues. Guy says, "I was thinking of putting the boy on the list now, so maybe by the time he becomes a man he can be up for a job" (372). "Many parents convey hopes of upward social mobility as a result of their children obtaining skills, contacts, and education through their work..." (Sommerfelt and Pedersen). However his wife was against the idea of having their son destined to be a labor worker. "Some...[children] are forcibly recruited into prostitution or into armed gangs" (Sommerfelt and Pedersen). It becomes clear why Little Guy's mother does not want him entering the workforce at such a young age. "Children who live away from their parents and who are engaged in domestic work are sometimes referred to as restavèk in Creole,...The term illustrates the blurry distinction between fosterage arrangements and child labor" (Sommerfelt and Pedersen). Some sources even go as far as saying that child labor is merely a result of slavery. " [Child Labor] is less a part of the heritage from colonial times, slavery, or the nineteenth century" (Haiti Soldarite Internationale 2001) Although Haitians ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Catholic Church And The Church The Catholic Church has always been one to hand out praise fairly freely. There is a patron saint for everything, from plague to beekeeping to flowers. There are patron saints for specific cities, patron saints for specific trades, and patron saints for almost any object that comes to mind. However, in the past, the process of becoming a saint, known as canonization, was at the least thoroughly investigative. The Catholic Church has strict beliefs to be upheld and represented. For example, charity work has always been an enormous part of the Church and its mission. The entirety of the Catholic Church, including any and all charities affiliated with the Church, donates approximately $30 billion to charity annually in the U.S. alone (Jacobson). Any person who is on the track to canonization must be one who upholds those values, that same generosity that is so ingrained in the Church. In September of 2016, Mother Teresa is going to be beatified by Pope Francis. While beatification, or the act of confirming that a person has been in heaven since their death, is not the final step in canonization, it is the biggest and most important part of the process. However, Mother Teresa's charity work was not as advantageous as the Catholic Church has let on thus far. Although she is credited with providing food and healthcare to the poor, the terrible quality of her treatment, her lack of qualification, and her fraudulent behaviors are too often overlooked; therefore, Mother Teresa should ... You land in Santo Domingo to transfer to a short commuter flight to Port–au– Prince. During the flight, you gaze outside your window to admire the breathtaking view of the Sierra de Baoruco, with its luscious forests. As the plane approaches the Haiti–Dominican Republic border, you notice that the land has been completely denuded of trees directly on the other side of the border, creating a clear demarcation between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. This physical border is only one indication of the clear contrast between the two countries that share Hispaniola. According ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During Napoleon's reign in France, Napoleon sought to control the entire island of Hispaniola through control of Spain and the reacquisition of Haiti. Harsh rule by the governors–general induced loyalists to form the movement La Reconquista to rise up in order to restore Spanish sovereignty. (Metibag 91) Though the colony was returned to Spain in 1809, weak support led to a decay in colonial infrastructure, leading to a revolt, led by José Núñez de Cáceres and Don Manuel Carvajal, which declared "Spanish Haiti" independent. However, the new nation was vulnerable, and Boyer immediately seized on the opportunity to unite the island for security purposes, seeking to impose "Haitianization" on Santo Domingo economically and politically. Such aspects of "Haitianization" included abolition of slavery, land redistribution, settlement of Haitians, and forced cultivation of crops in a region dominated by cattle ranchers. (Moya Pons 123, 133) An insurrection group named los trinitarios seized on the discontent of the Dominican people in the 1830s and 1840s, leading to independence in 1844. • 21. Foreign Aid Intervention And Poor Effective Governance... On January 12, 2010, a devastating earthquake of 7.0 magnitude shook Haiti and its residents. An estimate of more than 250,000 deaths was recorded, along with 300,000 injuries, and 1,200,000 people left displaced with no access to proper food, water or shelter. This essay presents a critique of foreign aid intervention and poor effective governance within the country of Haiti. The essay will begin with a history of Haiti's political, economic and social aspects that contribute to today's slow efforts of recovery. The paper will then describe and analyze the disaster under the four pillars of emergency management including: Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery. The analysis under the four pillars will help understand the rationale for the absence of normal day to day procedures in Haiti today. Additionally, the paper will give recommendations on how to improve the situation in Haiti and risk reductions for future possible disasters. Despite the slow developments in Haiti, the lack of safety officials has failed to recognize the impounding situation in Haiti. This has resulted in a severe dependency on foreign aid. History The power struggle between the citizens of Haiti and the Haitian Government has been an ongoing process for centuries. Months after the earthquake, Haitians were still seen searching for employment opportunities, whereas the nation clearly had an intensive amount of work to be done in order to recover from the disaster. It also went by the name Saint–Domingue and is now known as the country of Haiti (Feb. 1st, Regina Wellner). The country is located on the west side of Hispaniola, sharing the same island as the Dominican republic in the Caribbean sea. The colony thrived economically in its early days because of the coffee and sugar industry, which were primarily run by slaves. It was even nicknamed "The pearl of the Antilles" because it was the richest French colony in the west and produced 60% of the world's coffee and 40% of the world's sugar (Feb 1st, Regina Wellner). • 29. To What Extent Has The United States Intervention? Haiti... Introduction In this essay, I will be assessing to what extent has the United States intervention in Haiti from 1915 to 1934 contributed to Haiti 's underdevelopment. The United States military occupation which ended in 1934 created political instability, corruption and the dependence of foreign aid which negatively impacts Haiti 's economy. The claim of this present paper is that the United States has contributed to Haiti 's economical underdevelopment to a large extent . I will begin this paper by providing some background information on Haiti pre–intervention, address the direct effects of the United States occupation of Haiti and, furthermore explain how this occupation has set the precedence for other interventions from the international community. The events which will be analyze in order to determine the occupation's role in Haiti economical underdevelopment are as follow : Duvalierism 1957–1986 , Coup d'Etat of 1991–1994 , Coup d'etat of 2004 ,2010 Earthquake and Elections and the 2011 Cholera Epidemic . To defend this argument, I will be using both primary sources from both Haitian and American Historians and documents such as newspaper articles and court documents which will express the sentiment of the time. • 33. Jean-Claude Van Damme And Bipolar Disorder Jean–Claude Van Damme and Bipolar Disorder We live in a society where empathy is given to only certain people and under only certain circumstances. In reality, empathy and validation were not designed to work this way; sadly, we still live in a society that often does not offer support to someone diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It was for that reason; Jean–Claude Van Damme suffered in silence for many years. His strong outward appearance hid his constant battle with a very serious form of bipolar disorder, which is defined as rapid–cycling bipolar disease. This disorder is a treatable illness marked by extreme changes in mood, thought, energy, and behavior. Although, there is a false stigma attached to this illness, it is not a character flaw or a sign of personal weakness. Jean–Claude Van Damme is a martial artist, actor, and director. He was born in Belgium on October 18, 1960. As a young child, Van Damme was small and weak. At age eleven, his father introduced him to martial arts as a way for him to become more physically fit. He studied Karate, Kickboxing, Taekwondo, and Muay Thai. He excelled at all of them. At age fifteen, he began his professional Karate career and at age eighteen, he launched the California Gym in Brussels. It was during this time, he started experiencing extreme highs and extreme lows. Behind Closed Doors is a documentary about Van Damme. In this film he describes his mood swings as being so severe that even if it was a sunny day, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Established by Spain in 1492, control of Haiti was ceded to the French and the island began to flourish under its new rulers. The slave trade played an enormous part of the country's history, at the time accounting for nearly a third of the entire slave trade across the Atlantic. Controlled for years by the French, "Haiti – then called Saint–Domingue – was the Pearl of the Antilles, one of the richest islands in France's empire. In the 1780s, Haiti exported 60% of all the coffee and 40% of all the sugar consumed in Europe: more than all of Britain's West Indian colonies combined," (Henley, 2010). It wasn't until nearly ... On January 1, 1804, the first, and only, country born of a slave revolt, was born. However, this was not the end of French involvement. France demanded 150 million francs in reparations for the war in order to be recognized as a republic. Von Tunzelmann, a contributor to the article by Henley, said that "...Haiti was paying reparations to France from 1825 until 1947. It took out huge loans from American, German and French banks. By 1900, Haiti was spending about 80% of its national budget on loan repayments. By the time the original reparations and interest were paid off, the place was basically destitute and trapped in a spiral of debt," (Henley, 2010). Tired of dealing with a failed government, another revolution began in 1911. This revolution led to a long period of US occupation. Following failed dictators, regimes, and governments, François ¬"Papa Doc" Duvalier became the leader of Haiti in 1957. • 41. Persuasive Stereotypes Made By Volvo We try to persuade people all the time. Whether it is our parents in order to get a dog, our teachers to get a better grade, or our boss to negotiate a higher wage. However, sometimes the intended goal turns out to be an unexpected consequence. So, what key elements make up a great persuasive speech? To answer this question, it is best to bring in a real–world example. An advertisement made by Volvo showcases a variety of different persuasive tactics that attempt not only show off certain qualities of their car, but to also influence their audience to buy their car. A variety of factors will be analyzed such as salience, message characteristics, and source credibility. Through thorough examination of these different features, along with the incorporation of research studies, it will be seen that some of these tactics are more persuasive and work better within certain segments of the target audience. Advertisements are usually not meant for everyone, but target a specific subgroup within a population that could benefit from the message or the product. Volvo, safe to assume, is not targeting children in their ads, but rather people who may or may not be looking for a car at the moment. Other demographic variables are intertwined with these groups, but are not explicitly stated. Throughout the succeeding paragraphs it will be more apparent on how these persuasive factors attempt to reach out to the audience and how successful they may be. The story is set in Haiti, a poor country consumed by malnutrition, abandonment, and suffering. Edwidge Danticat uses the main character, a poor, lower class, black woman from Ville Rose, to make a political commentary on the situation in Haiti. The story suggests the desire of poor people to escape their harsh reality and become consumed in a world outside their own. When the woman finds the baby, she acknowledges all the signs that the baby is dead but seems to create a separate reality. She becomes delusional and takes the baby in as if it was hers; feeding, bathing, and caring for it constantly. She even imagines that the house she is a mid in belongs to her, the baby, and the pool man. In the end she says "We made a pretty picture standing there. Rose, me, and him." The woman's delusional state is provoked by her inability to maintain a family. She desperately wanted a family of her own. The author constantly uses words like "my" and "mine" that show possession. The woman's way of coping with tremendous loss and suffering was creating an alternate world. Danticat adds the woman's escape from reality to portray the desperate desire of Haitians to prosper from a life of poverty. Becoming delusional was the only way many people could cope with the horrors of the government. Under the rule of Dictator Jean–Claude ''Baby Doc" Duvalier, Haiti underwent horrific and traumatizing events. Many hatians like the woman of the story, learned to disconnect herself from the ghastly situations and escape into a better life. Danticat adds another example of this in the story. She describes "My grandmother Defile who died with a bald head in a prison because God had given her wings." Haiti has been faced with many foul leaders and thus brought times of despair for the Haitian people. The empowerment of poor leadership has led to a country that "has never known a period free of tyranny, repression, political conflict, racial animosity, and economic hardship" (Haggerty). Haiti's capital, Port–au–Prince, is a place where "kidnappings and street crime are rampant, and the undermanned police force is rife with corruption" (Williams). The CIA is in charge of gathering information that is going on from other countries in order to help our own national security to become stronger, and to be able to protect the citizens of the United States better. However, what happens when the CIA tries to protect it's citizens by screwing over other countries? What happens when the CIA is responsible for destroying other countries' governments or placing leaders where we do not belong as a country to try and control politics that we should not even be involving ourselves in. While the CIA is meant to have good intentions for providing our country with national security, a lot of times the United States is responsible for meddling in affairs we never belonged in which cause harm, devastation, or death to the countries we force ourselves upon. In early 1951, the nationalization of Iran's oil industry by Mosaddegh was the trigger for the United Kingdom to begin discussion with the United States to overthrow Mosaddegh and return the power to the shah. Name: JIAYUN CANG Student Number: 1001720060 Course Code: GGRA02H3 TA' Name: Kelly Chan Haiti's poverty When people start to talk about Haiti, the first word come out in my mind is "poverty", and second is "tragedies". Unlike other countries, Haiti's problems are continuous for decades. According to Haiti's Disasters, Noriega claims that Haiti is not only suffering from natural disasters, but also a human disaster. After the 2010 Haiti earthquake, more and more countries start to put their attention on Haiti and providing humanitarian help. However, Haiti's poverty is not an accident or simply caused by a natural disaster, but a necessary consequence of both external and internal issues, which involves historical, economic, political, environmental issues and influence from other countries. First of all, Haiti's poverty is historical. Anup Shah introduces Haiti in her article "Haiti" as: "Before the 'discovery' of Hispaniola (the island that is now Haiti and the Dominican Republic) by Christopher Columbus, there was a thriving civilization of native Americans, known as the Arawak–speaking Taino Indians. The arrival of Columbus and European colonialism brought disease, slavery, misery and death. They were soon wiped out from the island and black slave labor from Africa was needed to replace them. What was thought of as a rich and profitable Western colony, Haiti today is the poorest country in the western hemisphere" (Shah, A, 2010). Haiti's problems are long–term, which ... Examples Of The Quest Cycle In Makina's Journey The Quest Cycle in Makina's Journey Yuri Herrera's Signs Preceding the End of the World is a contemporary novel set in the 21st century in the Southwest. The story follows the journey of a protagonist named Makina, who goes to the North in search of her brother. During her journey, Makina faces many trials and test before ultimately transforming and being reborn with a new identity. Although Herrera's story is written in the present–day, it is structured on an ancient pattern. In the following stage, the "Call to Adventure," a hero is chosen and called, in the form of a message, to go on a journey (Vogler 100–104). Vogler also adds that a "string of coincidences" can urge the hero to take the call of adventure (100). Herrera shows this correlation to the Quest Cycle in his story by explaining, "Her mother, Cora, had called her and said 'Go take this paper to your brother. I don't like to send you, child, but who else can a trust it to, a man?' " (12). Herrera shows that Makina is chosen by her mother's message to be the hero in the Quest Cycle. Similarly, the "coincidence" that urges Makina to go on the adventure occurs when the ground collapses and she sees the man disappear into the hole (11). After Makina is called to go on this journey, she must cross a boundary between the two worlds, known as the "Threshold Crossing," and make her journey into the "new world." Volger explains that "Threshold Guardians," people that try to block and test the hero, are commonly seen in this stage of the Quest Cycle; they can start as enemies and turn into allies (129). Often the hero must ignore the guardian or reflect their energy back onto them (Vogler 129). Once the hero has surpassed the guardians, they can cross the physical boundary into the other world (Vogler 130). However, when the protagonist arrives in the "new world" they are tested and must adapt to the new rules quickly (Vogler 138). The heroes often ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It seems clear that the wealthy Caribbean island Haiti, which gained its independence from France in 1804, and had experienced some real economic growth should also be enjoying real economic development in the twenty first century. The Difficult Transition from Duvalierism to Democracy in Haiti Haiti has historically been the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, suffering from mismanagement of resources and corrupt rule by the elites. After the execution of Tsar Nicholas II during the Russian Revolution of 1917, the newly formed Bolshevik government developed a philosophy of socialism, with the gradual transition to communism. The Bolsheviks intended to eliminate national differences and instead, replace diversity with a monolithic state based on a unified economic and political system through communism. However, the project of creating a socialist state proved to be problematic through several justifications. First, the Soviets underestimated the degree in which the non–Russian ethnic groups in the country would resist assimilation into a Russianized state. The Basmachi Movement lasted from 1916–1934, when the Muslim people of Central Asia revolted against Soviet control of their territory and way of life. Secondly, the Soviet's economic planning lacked to meet the needs of the state, and instead focussed on the arms race with the United States. According to Lawrence Sullivan, Coordinator of Information of the US House of Representatives, "communism has failed for forty–three years to produce enough goods to keep abreast of Russia's normal population growth." Sullivan adds that in present–day Russia, the food supply, housing, education, transportation, and gross national products are "far and away" from the rest of Europe. Thus, it was not out of concern for ordinary Haitians that the United States intervened in Haiti. It was out of concern for profit and stability within the United States' own backyard. The purpose of this paper is to show the negative aspect that the United States had played in the government of Haiti. The situation in Haiti was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Over one thousand miles of roads and two hundred bridges were built. The occupiers reconstructed the French irrigation system that Haiti had, new wharves and acetylene lighthouses were built. Theaters and parks were restored or built from the ground up. The public health systems were enlarged; hospitals and clinics were set up across the country. Even American doctors came to train Haitian doctors, and some Haitian doctors went to the U.S. to study (Thomas Smith: 291, video). These are the only things that Haiti benefited from this intervention. Another achievement made during this transition was that the Marines from the US established reformation of the Haitian army. They replaced it by a National Police Force (La Garde d'Haiti) that dominated Haitian politics ever since. This army had been conceived as a nonpartisan peacekeeping force that would help ensure the right kind of political stability. During the occupation it did so. Afterward, however the existence of such a force ended by helping political strongmen stay in power. "The Haitian Garde was especially created to fight against other Haitians. It received its baptism of fire in combat against its countrymen. And the Garde, like the army it was to sire, has indeed never fought anyone but Haitians. Its most important campaign was its participation alongside the Marines in the war against the peasant nationalists led by Charlemagne Peralte and Benoit Battraville, when Marines and Garde together ... • 109. Double Impact Essay An Analysis of the Movie, Double Impact The movie opens twenty–five years ago in Hong Kong. The parents of two twin babies, Alex and Chad, had borrowed money from Raymond Zhang and Nigel Griffith, two lead smugglers. They needed the money in order to build a tunnel between Hong Kong and the mainland. After the tunnel was built and the money collected, Nigel Griffith and Raymond Zhang had a gang of hit men massacre Alex and Chad's family. Frank Avery, a friend of the family, races into the scene and finds the parents already dead. The two babies are in the back seat with a maid. She takes Alex and flees the scene. Frank sees Chad left behind and takes him and runs. Twenty–five years after ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alex arrives and head butts Chad. When Chad revives from being knocked unconscious, Frank convinces the two brothers to help avenge the deaths of their parents. The setting for this movie is very appropriate. They are in Hong Kong where the laws are not up to par with the American Style. This allows the corrupt trades of Zhang, Griffith, and Alex to go on hardly disturbed by the Hong Kong police. The dominant theme in Double Impact is vengeance and it is seen quite readily once the action gets rolling. Alex and Chad are out to kill Zhang and Griffith for the massacre of their parents. As the movie rolls on, Alex becomes suspicious of Chad because he thinks that he is playing around with his girlfriend Danielle. We see Alex's thoughts of Chad with Danielle as he becomes drunker and his mind imagines that they are having sex together. These thoughts enrage Alex and he fights his own brother. The whole movie was directed and acted very well considering Chad and Alex are both played by the same person, Jean–Claude Van Damme, which justifies the movie's name, Double Impact. The main character Jean–Claude Van Damme plays more roles than just casting. He is also the fight choreographer and one of the producers. Development in any aspect of life; let it be of the past, present or the known future, is dependent on these three variants. Though it is a commonly held belief that events of the past, and the actions of individuals in the past, have no connection to the world of today, nor any impact upon what is happening in the present. But, the truth is that there are a large number of features that make the past vitally effective in the present (Lieb p.155). Or at least, that's they want the watchers to think. The truth is that there are many different themes that tie into the world's past. Rango (the talking lizard) can represent some of the world's most influential leaders; the mayor, who is a talking turtle, corresponds to the corrupted government of countries. In a way, many of the themes in this movie relate to one another. The mayor wanted to have everything under his control, every piece of land, every piece of business and so on. The town, was one day thriving, living the great American life, and then the next, businesses were shutting down, land was drying up, and the drought was more serious than ever. While the mayor and his comrades laughed about getting all the water to themselves, the villagers lived in hardship. That situation reminds me of Jean–Claude Duvalier, president of Hati from 1971–86. Jean–Claude resumed the position of president after his predecessor and father, passed. The United States put a lot of pressure on Jean– Claude to restore the great land of Hati, from the dictatorial regime of his father. In the beginning, he was successful. The events that transpired in the late 1980s were a catalyst for the international community to intervene. As an effort to promote democracy, the United States began influencing elections in Haiti (Torgman). In 1990 with pressure mounting from the International community, Haiti held a moderately fair presidential election. With over fifty percent of registered voter participation; of that sixty–seven percent of the voters supported the new Haitian President Jean–Bertrand Aristide. This was the first democratic election ever held in Haiti since it achieved independence (Torgman). Therefore, the Haiti election was a remarkable step towards democracy. Nonetheless, the president's popularity faded soon after the election. Aristide lost support from bureaucrats and the military. The loss of control of the government and the lack of support resulted in a coup in 1991. The successful mutiny hurled the newly formed democratic nation back into familiar political turmoil just after nine months of Aristide being elected president. In response to the coup, the Organization of American States (OAS) suspended economic relations, while the United States responded by enforcing trade embargoes and freezing Haiti's accounts (Torgman). Title Melissa Lichota "Those who do not study the past, the great American philosopher and historian George Santayana once observed, are condemned to repeat it." (Schmidt, 1) This is not only true for the present we live in today, but is held true for the future tomorrow. In 2010 Haiti was hit with traumatic earthquake that has still left 150,000 people not re–housed and live in tents. "It was devastating because a history of adverse social conditions and extreme ecological fragility primed Port–au–Prince for massive loss of life and destruction when the ground began shaking on January 12th." (Farmer, 3) The history of Haiti has caused the country a great struggle to rebuild after the earthquake and the 1825 settlement between Haiti and France, the occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1934, and the Duvalier dictatorships from 1957 to 1986 events prove that history has a substantial impact upon the future after a devastating "natural" disaster. Haiti's independence created new difficulties and led to a spiral of independent debt. "The prospect of slave rebellion terrified every slave–holding elite and now their own restless slaves had a bloody example to emulate." (Phillips, 4) Other colonies relied heavily on slave labor and could not risk losing property, which resulted in Haiti being quarantined to hide the independence. • 137. A Country Of Chaos : Haiti A Country in Chaos: Haiti Haiti is the poorest county in the Western Hemisphere, but it once was a very wealthy nation. Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean with the Dominican Republic. They are blessed with beautiful mountains and beaches, copper, gold, and oil. At one point, Haiti was more wealthy than the British colonies that were located in the Caribbean. Haiti is rich with natural resources, so why is Haiti the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere? They are the poorest nation because they have a lot of natural disasters, they have a history of an unstable government, and they have a poor healthcare system. Since Haiti is located between tectonic plates, it is prone to natural disasters. Natural disasters have forced the country farther into poverty due to the cost of damages. A good example is the earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010. The earthquake caused billions of dollars' worth of damages. Haiti was already a very poor country before the disaster, but the earthquake forced people farther into poverty. The families of Haiti did not have insurance, resulting in many families left homeless. The first estimate for deaths caused by the earthquake was more than 250,000 and affected approximately 3,500,000 lives (Pallardy, 2016). • 141. Comparing Napoleon's Rise To Power In Animal Farm And... How do dictators gain control of their people? How are they able to rise into power and place the fate of their nations into their own greedy hands? How are they able to devastate the lands they call home and feel no sense of remorse for it? According to Jan Masaryk, "Dictators are rulers who always look good until the last ten minutes." While this is not literally true, both Napoleon, an animal character from Animal Farm, and ex–Haitian dictator Jean–Claude Duvalier are dissimilar in the way that they rise to power and in the laws they impose, but are alike because they appear to be great leaders until years of tyranny ultimately reveal their true characters. Napoleon's rise to power is steady and unhurried. He first gains power when Old Major dies and Napoleon and Snowball, being the cleverest animals, naturally assume leadership over the other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Napoleon's laws and policies are often meant to repress the animals and keep them silent, malleable, and unable to assemble. "He announced that from now on the Sunday–morning Meetings would come to an end" (Orwell 49). He decrees that "Beasts of England" has been abolished and is no longer allowed to be sung (Orwell 78). At the end of the novel, after the Seven Commandments have been changed so drastically that they are no longer recognizable, only one commandment remains. "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" (Orwell 118). Ironically, the true meaning of this statement is that all animals are not equal and that the pigs view themselves as better in every way. Duvalier's laws and policies were not quite as oppressive. There are varying descriptions of the Hero's Journey steps but only the steps that are set by the teacher is used. These steps are the "The Call", "Allies", "Preparation", "The Guardians of the Threshold", "Crossing the Threshold", "Road of Trials", "Saving Experience", "Transformation", and "Sharing the Gift".This essay is explaining what the Hero's Journey is in the book Whirligig by Paul Fleischman. The step that is coming up is the Call which is when the hero starts their journey. The Call occurs when Mrs. Zamora requests Brent to make the whirligigs in the corners of the United States. For example, Mrs. Zamora tells ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With this sentence, you can see that Brent only prepared materials to build the whirligig. This shows that Brent is prepared to go on his journey because he has all of his necessaries in his luggage for the quest. Also, this shows that Brent still is self conscious, comparing others to him. Therefore his preparation is done, and he next needs to cross the Threshold blocking him from starting his quest. There are no Guardians of the Threshold in this story unless Brent's parents are counted in the first place. The book stated that "Brent's parent raised one objection after another" (Fleischman 41). The Guardians of the Threshold usually prevents the hero from going on his quest, and this statement shows that Brent's parents are objecting on the quest. If their objection is fulfilled, Brent wouldn't have gone on the quest at first. This fits the standards of being the Guardians of the Threshold but nothing is done. In conclusion, it could be called the Guardians of the Threshold by some. A main problem in Brent's journey that is a Threshold of sorts is that he's self conscious.
