Labour Day In The Late 1800s
Labor Day occurs every first Monday in September. It is dedicated to the social and economic
achievements of American workers. Labor Day was created by the 19th century labor movement
(Labor Day, 2010). It became a federal holiday in 1894. To some Americans, Labor Day symbolizes
the end of the summer. It is celebrated with parties, parades, and athletic events. Labor Day originated
during the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States which was in the late 1800s (Labor
Day, 2010). Around this time, the average American worked 12 hours days and seven days a week.
Even though there were regulations in some of the states, children who were as young as 5 or 6
worked in mills, factories and mines. They only earned a fraction of what the adults were earning.
Everyone, who worked, endured extremely unsafe working conditions, such as insufficient amounts of
fresh air, sanitary facilities and breaks. When manufacturing increasingly supplanted agriculture as the

There were even a few states that passed legislation recognizing it. However, Congress would not
legalize the holiday until 12 years later when a moment in American labor history brought the worker
s rights into public view. On May 11, 1892, Pullman Palace Car Company s employees in Chicago
went on strike to protest the wage cuts and the firing of the union representatives. On June 26, led by
Eugene V. Debs, the American Railroad Union called for a boycott of the Pullman railway cars (Labor
Day, 2010). This was going to hurt the railroad traffic nationwide. The federal government dispatched
troops to Chicago to break the strike. This caused deaths in more than 12 workers. After several days
of unrest and trying to repair ties with the American workers, Congress passed an act that made Labor
Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the surrounding

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi And The Prosperity Workers
The Prosperity Workers
There are many types of people around the world who help others in the pursuit of social justice.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Cesar Chavez, and Wangari Maathai are some of the type who were
looking for justice, equality, and equal opportunities. These human rights activists all fought for their
rights and persisted in trying to make a change in the world around them.
One of the most popular human rights activists who fought for racial equality, Mohandas Karamchand
Gandhi would stop at no length to achieve this. Gandhi developed his philosophy of Satyagraha, or
resistance through non violent civil disobedience to defend his rights and the rights of all Indians and
non whites. Practices of Satyagraha included boycotts, protest marches, and fasts. He encouraged
others to defend their rights in this manner, and to work together to end racial injustice in South Africa
(Study Synce). One for encouraging people to face their fears,Gandhi would let people get out of their
comfort zones and fight for what is theirs; With this, Gandhi would also have people who did not
agree with him. The author stated that Gandhi was sent to prison for 6 years, Gandhi had been thrown
off a train in South America because he was Indian, and had attempts of assassination against him, the
final one being successful from a Buddhist extremist Nathuram Vinayak Godse (Sivananda). Even
though Gandhi had faced obstacles such as these, nevertheless, people still rallied to him and
supported him during troubling times, this would help Gandhi achieve racial justice. Gandhi s firm
and tenacious adherence to the cause of the poor, the downtrodden Harijans, and the common man of
the Indian village, is indeed worthy of emulation. Through all the vicissitudes of time and power and
fame, he kept before the vision of the Indian Congress the fundamental purpose for which it came into
being the amelioration of the suffering of the poor. Uncrowned king of the land, he remained a friend
of the poor; he lived for them, moved among them as one of them, and served them with all his heart.
He saw God in them, and in their service wore out his body (Sivananda). As seen from what Gandhi
had done and how people were inspired by him,

The Killer at Thurston High
The Killer at Thurston High, discussed a teenager named Kip who experienced psychological,
emotional, and peer stress in early childhood. Violent and disturbing outburst was often a result of his
actions, causing catastrophic traumas to his community and family. The film goes into depth
explaining the relationship of Kip s immediate family and his individual characteristics. The Kinkel
family was well known, sophisticated and quite until violence struck. Kip Kinkel s parents were
Spanish teachers who expected high academic performances from their children. Both parents had a
good life educating students and decided to start their own family in Springfield, OR. Known by
nearly the entire town, the Kinkel s were the ideal middle class family. During early school years Kip
struggled with phonics and numbers. His parents held him back in the first grade because they agreed
he did not meet satisfactory standards. This mainly was because Kip often confused E s with 3 s and B
s with D s to later find out he suffered with Dyslexia. Kip has always resented his parents for holding
him back in the first grade in which I believe, sparked his troubled adolescence. During Kips early
years, he felt that he was often compared to his older sister, Kristin, who was perfect at everything and
was able to do simple things such as handstands and cartwheels. The video shows a recording of the
family outside in the park playing around. I

Guilt In Art Spiegelman s Maus
Being Jewish during the Holocaust must be terrifying. Overcoming all odds of being put into a ghetto
guarded by a Gestapo and being transferred into a concentration camp to be put into intense labor is
pure luck, but not for Vladek Spiegelman. In Art Spiegelman s Graphic Novel Maus, a comic book not
only about Vladek s first hand experience through the Holocaust but also a relationship of a father and
son. This relationship is an important narrative all through Maus, and this influences the feeling of
guilt. Two different kinds of guilt are presented in this book: a familial guilt, and the survivor s guilt.
In Maus, a specific relevance is a familial guilt that connects to the family. Artie s feeling of not being
a son to his father, which feeling guilty happens throughout in the book. In the first couple of chapters
of Maus: My Father Bleeds History, we see that Vladek and Artie don t get along. They both live close
together, yet they don t visit each other. When they speak to one another, their tone sound like an
argument is about to break out. Arguments is an often occurrence, for instance, Artie s cigarette ashes
on the carpet, or Vladek s discovery that Artie has burned his mother s diaries from the war. His father

says, Somehow, I wish I had been in Auschwitz with my parents, so I could really know what they

After the World War II ended, Artie was born in the country of Sweden. Both Artie s parents were
survivors of the Holocaust. This tragic event has affected both of his parents, mainly his father. Most
of Maus is about the relationship between the past and the present, and these horrible events of the

Abstract
The aim of this article is an attempt to know the different moods of the poet John Keats how Keats
moves from Negation to Affirmation how he reacted against problems, how he turned between reality
and unreality, joys and sufferings, imagination and reason, and how he turned towards poetry. The
poet who once declared that he wanted to fade for away, dissolve and quite ... Show more content on

Here he accepts life with Joy and Sorrow. Before Ode to Auttumn, Keats is a poet with an insatiable
desire for the joy of life but in the ode Keats reaches a stage of impersonality where the process of
death and decay are acceptable to him. It is the most perfect of the odes of Keats. Keats with all his
poetic qualities is here in the poem which has a unique and perfect expression even the severest critic
finds no fault. In it there is no looking before and after, no pining for what is not, but a complete
negation of his own self. It is an objective presentation of the truth of life. The poem was written at a
time when Keats had a lot of pain and adversity around him. Tom was already dead, Goerge wanted to
go to America and Keats being the eldest had to arrange for money. His own love for Fanny Brawne
was a cause of much agony for him. There is much pain at the back but the delights of literature are
also with him. The Sunday walk by the River Itchen proved soothing and he drank deep the screne
beauty of nature which resulted in his Ode to Autumn. Keats narrates a beautiful season to us and he
does it in an objective way, Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness/ Close bosom friend of the
maturing sun;/ Conspiring with him how to load and bless/ With fruit the vines that round the thatch
eves run. (Garrod,

The Fires Of Jubilee By Stephen B. Oates
The Fires of Jubilee by Stephen B. Oates
The Fires of Jubilee by Stephen B. Oates describes a sad and tragic story about a man named Nat
Turner who was born into slavery and his fight to be free. Ironically, his willingness to do anything,
even kill, to gain his freedom leads to his own demise. From the title of this book, The Fires of
Jubilee, ; a reader can truly grasp the concept that there is trouble, chaos, and mayhem brewing in the
month of August.
This story was not only riveting, but also one that kept me on my heels for almost the entire time that I
was reading it. Stephen B. Oates, a prize winning author of thirteen books and more then seventy
articles, is currently a professor of history at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Some of his
best novels have been With Malice Toward None: The Life of Abraham Lincoln, ; Let the Trumpet
Sound: The Life of Martin Luther King. Jr., ; and Rip Ford s Texas. ; His writing is riveting as well as
courageous. His willingness to get to such length to capture the mind of the reader and hold them in
suspense has earned him several awards throughout his lustrous career. Some of the awards that Oates
has received are the Christopher Award and the Barondess/Lincoln Award of the New York Civil War
Round Table. His work has gained worldwide notoriety and is currently translated in four different
languages: French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Three Laws Of Robotics
The Three Laws of Robotics were formulated by Isaac Asimov with the aim of creating a trusted
protection of humans from robots and vice versa. However, Asimov s short stories quite usually
challenge the rules that he has created. This essay will discuss three Asimov short stories that present
us with certain flaws in regards to the Three Laws of Robotics. The three stories will be Liar! ,
Runaround , and That Thou Art Mindful of Him . Through Liar! , Asimov is able to question the
meaning of harm, he is thus able to show that a problem will arise when considering what sort of harm
robots can protect us from. Through the short story Runaround , Asimov questions the importance of
each Law, creating scenarios in which a robot has to disobey ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In this short story, it is seen that a development which is meant to enhance the ability of robots to
adhere to the Three Laws leads to the opening of a whole new realm of problems. Keith Harriman,
director of US Robots, explains that a certain model of robots is being reproduced to have the ability
to weigh every human being giving it an order in terms of factors such as age, gender and intelligence
(Asimov 1974: 609 610). Understandably, this supposed improvement to the robot is meant to ensure
that the robots ability to follow the rules is improved. More specifically, it is meant to strengthen their
adherence to the Second Law, which states, A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings
except where such orders would conflict with the First Law (Asimov 1974: page 605). However, in
practice, this development would actually break the First Law of Robotics. Keith Harriman states, A
robot they say, has no right to brand this person or that person as inferior. By accepting the orders of A
in preference to that of B, B is branded as of less consequence than A and his human rights are
violated. (Asimov 1974: page 609) This statement illustrates that a robot that follows an order of one
human being in favour of another, would be breaking the First Law of Robotics because the other
human being would feel inferior and would be

Michelangelo s Madonna Of The Repairs
Many people who were involved in scholarly work have come to an agreement that much of the fine
artistic work in the Western countries can be traced from the Italian Renaissance, which occurred in
the period between 1400 and 1550. The period was characterized by architectural studies that involved
the ancient civilizations in which great architects, such as Masaccio, managed to develop chiaroscuro
that was about making objects appear in three dimensions by light and shade use. Therefore, the paper
seeks to revisit one of the sculptural artworks (Madonna of the Stairs) by Michelangelo in 1491.
Correspondingly, the key areas to be analysed include general characteristics of sculpture artwork,
types of the sculpture work, the cultural value of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In particular, during the early ages, the commencement of the work attracted much of the
individualism because mostly, creativity belonged to an individual. Due to this, it can be deduced that
this characteristic helps in acknowledging a person s contribution on the same. As well, the sculpture
is also identified with its naturalism feature. Thus, naturalism, in this perspective, is a combination of
both contemporary subjects in additional to drapery, anatomy, and naturalistic way of handling
proportions . Another characteristic of sculpture in Italy is about the revival of certain classical
subjects and forms. Equally important, the re emergence of classicism proved worth as it ensured that
the Gothic traditions survived. Furthermore, it is important to note that the Renaissance in Italy with
respect to sculpture art was dominated by religious art, and the activity was highly regarded by princes
as well as prominent religious leaders such as

The film of Hector and the Search for Happiness has a captivating plot which makes us want to watch
it until the end. Since in his research Hector goes to three places and each place has their own moral
value, this film is suitable for your soul. One of the places that Hector visits is China. In the movie,
China is described as a wonderful country, which has unique culture. The second place is Africa, with
glorious savannah and wild animals. Next, in Los Angeles, Hector obtains some happiness meanings
and feels what happiness is. There are many good films. However, Hector and the Search for
Happiness stands out from other movies for its inspirational plotline and enthralling moral value. Even
though, this film has many positive sides, there is a blatant weakness of this film. There are some
adulterated scenes involving Hector and Ying Li. Hence, it is not proper for children. Another
weakness of this film is its violent scenes. Hector, at the beginning of this film, is not very capable in
handling his emotion. Therefore, he lashes out with swearing and throwing things around. Overall,
this film is one of a kind for

my teenage years I was well known for my loving spirit and compassion for people. I was a problem

correlates strongly with ones inability to stabilize. People suffering from alcohol and substance abuse
addiction had most likely experienced some form of trauma, which resulted in their alcohol and drug

The Cantigas De Santa Maria Essay
The Cantigas de Santa Maria is one of the largest collections of monophonic songs from the Middle
Ages and is branded by the mention of the Virgin Mary in all 427 songs. The Cantigas are written in
Galician Portuguese, a poetic language in Castile at the time. The musical forms within the Cantigas,
are still being studied. There is a plethora of variations, but no musical forms have been considered
standard. In my analysis, I noticed a relationship between the refrain and the end of the stanzas which
tend to repeat the same melodic material. The refrain begins the poem and is repeated after each
stanza; in addition, the final portion of the stanza is displayed on the refrain, beckoning its imminent
return. Each Cantiga has very in depth syllabic patterns that work in attendem with the repeated
refreain After reviewing the translations of my Cantigas it seems the verse of the repeated refrain ties
in the moral of the poem and offers praise to Holy Mary. An example is the refrain in Cantiga 36, a
ship at sea. We should all love with all our will the lady who frees us from troubles and storms.
The refrain in my opinion eludes to the idea of storm being a metaphor for the trouble you face in
everyday life, and you must praise in the storm so that the Virgin Mary can eviscerate the darkness in
your life. Another stand out feature of the Cantigas are the illuminations that accompany them in the
codices. These beautiful illustrations map out the story of the Cantiga, and

Anti Polygraph
A polygraph is a diagnostic instrument that records physiological changes in a person caused by stress.
It relies upon measuring the body s involuntary responses which occur when the subject is consciously
being deceptive or untruthful when answering questions. This instrument was first invented in 1921 by
John Augustus Larson and ever since law enforcement agencies have began using them in their hiring
processes. In addition, polygraph test are admissible in certain states and in federal court at the
discretion of the trial judge. States like California, Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, and Florida allow the
tests if everyone stipulates to their use and agrees to admit the results ... Show more content on

There are many websites and books that will teach any person on how the polygraph works and how it
can be deceived. For example, if a person is able to believe his lies and practices over and over again
on responding the criminal questions, that person most likely will be able to deceive the test. Another
method is by controlling your breathing when asked the relevant questions and artificially increase the
heartbeat when asked the irrelevant questions. A person can alter his heart rate by thinking something
scary or exciting. Richard McGarrah Helms was the director of the Central Intelligence Agency and
was well known and respected within the federal government. According to the article Richard Helms,
Ex C.I.A. Chief, Dies at 89 by CHRISTOPHER MARQUIS in the New York Times, Helms served
until 1977 as the American ambassador to Iran, whose ruler, Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, was
supported by the United States. He later became an international consultant, specializing in trade with
the Middle East (Marquis 6). He once stated We discovered there were some Eastern Europeans who
could defeat the polygraph at any time. Americans are not very good at it, because we are raised to tell
the truth and when we lie it is easy to tell we are lying. But we find a lot of Europeans and Asiatics
can handle that polygraph without a blip, and you know they are lying and you have evidence that
they are lying ( A Tiny Revolution 1). Even high ranking government officials know the polygraph test
is not accurate, but yet law enforcement agencies keep using it. Furthermore, failing a polygraph can
be degrading and embarrassing. Failing a polygraph can hunt you for the rest of your life because
most law enforcement agencies will ask if you have taken one before. It can also close doors if an
employer finds out you have failed the test before. In addition,

Marilyn G Eazy Analysis
Determining a Potential Break Up: Analyzing the meaning of Marilyn by G Eazy Behind every love
song is a meaningful message that the audience often misses because they re hooked onto the beat, or
simply don t see the big picture. G Eazy is a new rapper who, over the past couple of years, has slowly
grown into a well known artist. Before everyone knew him for the song Me, Myself and I, he had an
album previous to his latest one, When It s Dark Out. In the album, These Things Happen, there was a
specific song that truly stands out to those in relationships. All relationships have their ups and downs
and everyone can agree to that. Marilyn by G Eazy, sends off a clear message to its audience:
relationships are difficult. The song starts off with the hook. The girl is talking to some guy, possibly
her boyfriend, and tells him, ...I want to love you/But if it s not right what can I do? (1 2). Within the
first few lines we can assume there is a conflict the couple is facing. Possibly him not wanting to be
with her? Maybe he s rejecting her? Or perhaps he s one of those guys that lead a girl on and decide to
leave her hanging. Whatever the case may be, we know they re dealing with an issue. As the song
continues, it then turns over to the guy speaking, perhaps back to the girl, and he understands that their
relationship isn t what it used to be and even uses the Kennedy s so called perfect relationship as an

Rod Serling s Judgment Night
The Twilight Zone TV show aired on American television from 1959 to 1964. Over 150 episodes
broadcast to millions of Americans, satisfying the thirst for entertainment and curiosity of the
unknown. The show delved into a wide array of topics, which included the supernatural, science
fiction, and fantasy. The show s creator, narrator, and lead screenwriter Rod Serling got a kick start for
The Twilight Zone from his story called The Time Element , which he had submitted to CBS, where it
was produced as part of the Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse anthology. It received a great deal of
complementary mail and prompted CBS to commission a Twilight Zone pilot for a possible series.
Therefore, Rod Serling wrote another story, which would be the pilot ... Show more content on

In the episode, the setting is on a freighter called the Queen of Glasgow in the Atlantic during World
War II. A passenger named Carl Lanser finds himself on this ship, and is unable to remember how he
got there, why he is there, or what he does, yet he remembers his name and where he came from. The
one important thing about him is that he seems to have heard and seen all this before. In the written
version of this episode, Rod Serling describes this as though Lanser, could recall seeing them [people
s faces] so many times before (page 66). The story evolves even more when Lanser says something
will happen at 1:15. Lanser stares intently at the clock until 1:15, and suddenly the engines stop
running. All of a sudden, a U boat shell hits the ship. Lanser runs outside with some binoculars and
looks at the U Boat. He nearly faints at the sight of himself standing on the deck of the U boat. In the
end, the U boat sinks the ship, and the passengers drown. At the end of the episode, the Carl Lanser on
the U boat discusses the event with one of his men. The man tells Lanser that they should have warned
the passengers before shooting ship, which Lanser ridicules him for it. He says that it is wrong and
that they will ultimately suffer their own personal hell for it. The man adds that they might have to
relive the experience that the passengers of the ship had as punishment. At this point, the viewer is
finally able to realize what happened. The moral of the episode is that no one is safe from judgment,
no matter what the circumstance may

Ansel Adams Early Life
When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall
be content with silence. Ansel Adams. Ansel Adams is a well known photographer and
environmentalist who helped to improve photography with his techniques, and passion for the subject.
Despite his mother s disapproval of his passion, he still stuck through and followed his heart. He
might not have impacted his mother s life, but he impacted the history of photography. Ansel Adams
Early Life was isolated and somewhat lonely, despite this he still found himself inspired by nature. He
was born in San Francisco, California when his mom wos 40. Due to his elderly parents, affluent
family history and the live in presence of his mother s maiden sister, the environment he grew up in
could be considered victorian/ or socially and emotionally conservative (Turnage). Growing up, Ansel

Essay on Electronic and Communication Privacy Act of 1986
Electronic and Communication Privacy Act of 1986
We are all familiar with the phrase, A little birdie told me. But where did that birdie get his
information? If he was like most Mockingbirds in the sky, his information was probably obtained
through eavesdropping, which is not an ethical approach. This day and age with technology becoming
more and more effective everyday it is not the birds that we have to worry about. Congress has
recognized the way that technology has changed society and reacted by passing the Electronic
Communication Privacy Act of 1986. There are two main Titles discussed in this act, Title I

on a cellular phone and also to disclose any of the information obtained illegally. The law forbids the
manufacturers of radio scanners from creating or marketing any type of radio that will interfere or

with the more obvious privacy laws. Title II Stored Wire and Electronic Communications and

Buffalo Bill s Impact On The Wild West
William Cody s legacy as a both a performer and a historical figure is mixed. Known as Buffalo Bill
to both his critics and his fans, Cody embodied the Wild West, establishing a narrative of frontier life
and those who resided in it. Through his traveling performances, Cody constructed an image that
resonated with millions of Americans. Many historians have analyzed Buffalo Bill s cultural
significance and how he affected Americans perceptions on expansion.
Since Christianson s work is a foreword to Cody s autobiography, it depicts Cody in a relatively
positive light. It largely focuses on the importance of Buffalo Bill describing in the thesis how this

Utilizing mostly secondary sources, Riley discusses how the professional relationship between
Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley strengthened the American frontier, as they pair became leading
interpreters of Manifest Destiny and of its casualties, American Indians (Riley 256). As she describes
in her thesis, by creating the cowboy and the cowgirl and imbuing them with ideals of white manhood
and womanhood, Cody and Oakley entered the era s ongoing debate concerning proper gender roles
for men and women, popularizing standards to which many Americans soon aspired (256). In other
words, Riley argues that the professional relationship between the individuals was significant in
popularizing the West. Through their show, Buffalo Bill and Oakley created the Wild West, presenting
their version of western settlement and instructing white citizens, immigrants, and children in the
American national ideology (276). Buffalo Bill and Oakley s perception on the West was significant
because of its popularity among American citizens. As Riley discusses, the shortcomings in accuracy

Mountain Property Case
Property
Whenever we mention the word property in conversation one automatically thinks about physical
items such as land, cars and houses. Reed (2014) suggests that, property is not just an object or thing,
nor resource but a right that relates people to each other in regard to limited resources.

The legal issue present in this case is joint tenancy with right of survivorship. Ownership of land can
be held by multiple people, as well as by business groups. This case involves four friends that had a

belonged to the surviving owner, Martin. However, Martin did not realize that one of the owners put
their son as the recipient of the remaining interest on the property their will. So, when Martin visited

Compare The Reaction Between Mentos And Diet Coke
Have you ever watched the reaction between Mentos and Diet Coke? Most people think it s a
chemical reaction, but they re wrong. It s actually a physical reaction, meaning that all the substances
to the reaction are still there, just rearranged. (Spurting Science) This physical reaction is caused by
nucleation. Carbon dioxide is in the Diet Coke, trying to escape. It s looking for any nucleation sites it
can attach to, like any bumps or crevices in the Mentos. When the Mentos are dropped into the Diet
Coke, it disrupts the polar attractions between the water molecules. The carbon dioxide will begin to
attach to the nucleation sites and form bubbles. The bubbles will quickly release from the Mentos and
rise to the top. Carbon dioxide will continue to attach to the nucleation sites and the process will
continuously repeat. Mentos are the best substance to use, because they are sprayed with 40
microscopic layers of sugar, which creates an abundance of nucleation sites. (Today I Found Out)

In one experiment, they found that Diet Coke at room temperature (70°F) and 5 Mentos created a
geyser that was roughly 9 ½ feet tall, while Diet Coke that was 110°F caused about a 16 feet tall
geyser. The second best method I found was attaching a nozzle to the mouth of the bottle. When this
was tested, it was found to go roughly 30 feet. An alternative for Mentos is rock salt. When tested, the
rock salts geyser went just about the same height as the Mentos geyser. One might think that using
more than 12 Mentos will make the geyser taller, but it actually doesn t increase or decrease the height
of the geyser. That s because after that, only around 11 12 of them actually stay in the bottle. The rest

Dickens Attitude Toward Education in Hard Times Essay
Dickens Attitude Toward Education in Hard Times Dickens wrote Hard Times in 1854, when the
industrial revolution was active. This influenced the way the book was written. In the first two
chapters of Hard Times, Dickens attitudes to education are presented. He uses two characters,
Gradgrind and M Choakumchild to show the bad views of education and the opposition to Dickens
views. There is an immediate tension between Dickens way of thinking and Gradgrind s and M
Choakumchild s. Gradgrind and M Choakumchild call the children vessels and do not use names but
numbers. The children are allowed no independent thought. While Bitzer is how he is supposed to be,

wants to know who he is before he shares it with anyone else. He is also organised and this is seen
when it says with a rule and a pair of scales, and the multiplication table always in his pocket . M
Choakumchild is introduced later in the second chapter; he is one of the one hundred and forty
schoolmasters. Instead of the way he looked being described, like Gradgrind, his intelligence was
described. The subjects and skills that he studied and has knowledge about were listed, e.g. biography
, algebra and vocal music . M Choakumchild knows a lot about these subjects because they are full of
facts and imagination is not really needed to know about them. He believes that fact is all that the
children need to know and like Gradgrind does not believe in freethinking. M Chockumchild is the
one who will teach the children how to be like in school life and social life. Gradgrind and M
Choakumchild are presented as plain people who do not like change. They have only one straight
forward idea of how the education system should be. They both see children as empty vessels and
believe that they should be seen and not heard. Dickens shows the juxtaposition of two pupils in the

In this essay I will be assessing the different areas of a student transitioning to university. I will be
discussing the key issues and challenges, which students may experience within their transitions and
how they will be able to deal with the difficulties they may have during their first year of university, in
addition to this there are strategies and actions they can take in order for their transition to be
effective. The experience students have can all vary on different students individual perspectives. This
could all determine on the kind of students that will be studying at the university, firstly you have
students who will be studying within their region or those who decides to move abroad to study which
are known as international students.
When students transition to university, there are many challenges and issues that students will
encounter. Briggs, A., Clark, J, and Hall, I, (2012, p2) mentions in his article a significant social
displacement, which may be intensified where the student is mature, is the first in their family to

The Latin cross has a long arm with a short one crossing it on one end. This cross is used in early
Christian architecture. When building medieval churches in the West, the Latin cross plan was
followed. Saint Peter s and Saint Paul s basilica demonstrate the use of the Latin cross. The
architecture of both of these churches were molded off of the Latin cross. The north and south arms of
the transept extend to form a Latin cross. Crossing the transept, one continued toward the triumphal
arch that framed the apse, the semicircular space beyond the transept. In the apse, at an altar that stood
on a raised platform, one received the sacrament of Holy Communion (Fiero 182). The Greek cross
has four arms of equal length. This cross is used in Byzantine architecture. The Hagia Sophia is an
example of the Greek cross plan, even though the Latin cross plan was incorporated into this structure.
Hagia Sophia was constructed by the East Roman emperor Justinian. Light is symbolic to Byzantine
liturgy so the mosaics and marble surfaces were illuminated. Once Constantinople fell, the Hagia
Sophia was transformed into a mosque and the mosaics were removed. Hagia Sophia marks the
golden age of Byzantine art and architecture that took place under the leadership of the emperor

Thirdly, I would make sure that Monica had all the knowledge and resources to communicate with us
and the ability to use her phone/email. This is because we learned that Monica didn t have a lot of
experience with technology and she didn t know how to exactly worked her email. Throughout the

The War Of The Civil War
The most successful war seldom pays for its losses, said Thomas Jefferson. On the eve of the
American Civil War, a struggle whose death toll surpassed 600,000 troops, it is easy to imagine that
many citizens would have agreed with the founding father. And, loss of life was not the only problem
caused by the fight. In the wake of the Civil War, Americans of all races faced the assassination of
President Abraham Lincoln, crippling personal debt, ambiguity regarding the redistribution of
southern land, and a divisive political conflict over which branch of the federal government processes
the most authority. However, a litany of problems also served as impetus for the American Civil War
with slavery, disagreement regarding division of new territory, dispute over the precedence of federal
or state government, and the overarching inability of politicians to compromise topping the list. When
examining the merit of the Civil War, the question becomes: Did the Civil War create more problems
than it solved? No. When compared side by side, a list of post war problems may be longer, but the
Civil War ended the country s practice of slavery. Slavery is the egregious and eternally unjustifiable
act of keeping human beings as belongings and forcing them into labor. Slavery is evil. The American
Civil War freed slaves, making it a struggle of exceptional merit and benefit.

Walden Pond, located in Concord, Massachusetts, was a place of inspiration for two well known
authors, Henry David Thoreau and E.B. White. Although, they wrote about the same place, their
experiences were a century apart. Thoreau visited the lake in 1854 where technology still wasn t as
advanced as it was in 1939 when White visited the historical site leading to a different feel for the
place. The authors style of approaching the view of the lake has both similar and different effects
when using point of view, imagery, and logos. In comparison, Thoreau and White use the first person
point of view in their writings, but in contrast they do not have same writing style. Thoreau writes
about his surroundings and writes with serenity. With many details he describes how the forest brings
calm to your soul and you feel connected to God and there is nothing to really care for. He writes

ignition points of this movement. The early fruit of this movement included the founding of many
organizations dedicated to making the gospel known across this new land and across the globe.
Mission organizations such as the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions are seen as
a direct fruit of this movement.
Another important outcome of this movement is seen in the breaking down of ethnic origins and
religious affiliations. In other words, as immigrants flooded into America and moved west into the
new frontier, religious affiliations they brought with them faded away. An example of how this worked
is seen in the Methodist camp meetings and the circuit riding Methodist preachers who brought the
gospel into these new areas and to the new citizens living in these areas. These camp meetings often
lasted for days with many coming to the Lord as the Holy Spirit moved across and through this new
land. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Americans believed that God s hand was on this new country, it led some to interpret this belief
that non white did have not a place or part in this plan. This led to the War with Mexico and ultimately
the American Civil War. For the church, denominations divided on this issue based on their stance on
the issue of slavery. An example of this divide is seen in the Southern Baptist Convention, which
formed after a slave holding missionary candidate was refused a

Heart Rate Variability ( Hrv )
Heart rate variability (HRV) is quickly becoming a buzz word in fitness, but in reality this is a very old
technology. Dating back to at least 1948 (15) HRV has been a commonly used method in research and
is an accepted diagnostic tool in several diseases/conditions, such as post traumatic stress disorder and
type 2 diabetes (9, 23).
HRV was, until recently, a tool that was confined to clinical and research settings, largely due to the
prohibitively high cost of equipment. Recent advances in technology, particularly among heart rate
monitors and smartphone based apps, have now made this technology available to fitness
professionals and health/fitness consumers.
HRV is derived from mathematical properties of cardiac inter beat intervals or what is referred to as a
R R interval. This inter beat interval represents tiny changes in the timing (i.e. fractions of a second)
from one heart beat to the next. Intuitively it would seem that a heart rate of 60 bpm would have
exactly 1 second between each beat. It even seems reasonable that a very metronomic or steady heart
rate would be indicative of health and/or fitness. In fact, just the opposite is true. A healthy
cardiovascular control system will have a high level of complexity, or variability, while an aged, unfit
or diseased system will show a loss of complexity or variability (21).
HRV testing is an exquisitely sensitive tool that is capable of providing us with important health and
fitness based information across

Positive Impact Of Queen Elizabeth 1
Queen Elizabeth 1 made a positive impact on England during her reign. However, those who governed
before were not as contributively towards the nation as Elizabeth was and thus can show that
Elizabeth helped restore England back to its power. King Henry the v111 was crowned king at the age
of eighteen. Henry consumed himself with the thought and desire of producing a son to rule the throne
after him. The traditional view of a king was to rule a kingdom and sort out the injustice that the
people wanted justice for. Not only did a king control the laws, politics and economics of their
kingdom, the king was seen as strong enough to help lead their country into battles and come back
with a victory. Henry was under pressure to make the Tudor family a successful line of Kings to help
carry on a legacy, daughters were not part of his plan. Henry desperately seeked a male heir to the
throne, during his first marriage to Catherine of Aragon, Catherine gave birth to a girl, Mary 1, in
1516. Henry was not satisfied by the gender which Catherine provided. Henrys idea was to get
divorced to Catherine and marry again to get the son that he desired for. However, the Catholic Pope
refused to allow the divorce between Henry and Catherine. With the refusal of the divorce, Henry

Country Music Genre Essay
What has influenced a crossroad in two of music s biggest genres Country, Pop? In this paper I m
going to state and defend my position on why I think it s good for both genres. I will also give reasons
on why people believe Hick Hop is bad for both cultures.
Country music has always been inspired by African Americans folk music. Since African Americans
weren t allowed to perform their folk songs white performers would paint their face and sing the
honky tonk. With common theme, and history the only thing that separates the two genres is the
presentation.
But back to current day the first time we witnessed Hick Hop was in 2005 when cowboy troy
collaborated the two genres to create I play chicken with the train. Cowboy troy was African American
which was uncommon, but what stood out more was his way of integrating rap into his music.
Since cowboy troy many artist have followed in his path. This past year the number one hit song by
Florida Georgia Line (Cruise) was remixed by rapper Nelly and it sky rocketed up the music charts.
But nelly wasn t the only rapper to remix country music the other most recent rapper to team up with a

Sociologist Tressie McMillan Cottom is one of the people that doesn t believes in Hick Hop this is
what she had to say in her article The Racial Dynamics of Hick Hop . I think it goes back to country
being fundamentally about a better, simpler time. And that s always a nostalgic feeling, about a better
past. So even when the music is about fun, and isn t on the surface about the past, the genre is about
that. And for white people a lot of talking about the good old times is talking about a pre integration
time a pre Civil Rights time, a time before interracial dating was common. So they ve got to walk a
fine line there between holding up the nostalgia of the genre and tapping into the youth

How Did Gandhi Influence British Imperialism
Throughout modern history, Britain s exponential growth inevitably affected the future of many
nations in the contemporary world in particular, the culturally intertwined state of India. Even in the
initial stages of colonisation, India was forcefully occupied by the British East India Company;
however, it was not until 1858 that a dictatorship was officially announced and the nation was forced
to regard England as the true homeland . Amidst societal unease and a growing discontent with the
British rulers by the poor peasants, India s emancipation seemed inevitable in order for the nation to
truly progress. In effect, a revolutionary leader spawned; Mohandas Gandhi. His great philosophical
mind held innovative ideas which were instrumental in the achievement of Indian Independence with
his thoughtful ideologies and beliefs paving the way for oppressed Indians to ultimately unite against
British imperialism. Consequently, this resulted in the monumental Satyagraha campaign that
triumphed successfully against the British authorities. In spite of fierce British opposition to India s
pleas for self governance, Gandhi continually pressed for a peaceful response to the dire situation;

Case Study Hy Dairies, Ltd Essay
Case Study Hy Dairies, Ltd. 1. What symptoms exist to suggest that something has gone wrong?
The sales volume and market share of Hy Dairies gourmet ice cream brand had picked up significantly
over the past two quarters compared with the previous year. As the vice president of marketing at Hy
Dairies, Syd Gilman credited this achievement to Rochelle Beauport, the assistant brand manager at
the time, and decided to reward her with a newly vacated post of marketing research coordinator.
Based on his own career experience, Gilman was very much convinced that the marketing research
coordinator job would provide Beauport with greater career potential with Hy Dairies. However

While Beauport, whose previous employer clearly discriminated against women in work and tended to
place women in technical support positions after a brief term in lower brand management jobs,
misperceived that Hy Dairies or even the whole industry would be just the same. In this case both
Gilman and Beauport made similar mistakes by narrowly categorizing, homogenizing, and perceiving
others into a certain group which is either similar or opposite to their own social identity.
Besides the above mentioned social identity and stereotyping problem, we may also see some other
perceptual errors given in the case, such as false consensus effect. It is the tendency for people to
project their way of thinking onto other people, or assume that everyone else thinks the same way they
do. Gilman apparently overestimated the extent to which Beauport had beliefs and characteristics
similar to his own. 3. What actions should the organization take to correct these problems?
Although we can t bypass the perceptual process, but we should make every attempt and find ways to
minimize perceptual biases and distortions. This case suggests that education and awareness about
how stereotyping works as well as meaningful interaction can effectively decrease the negative impact
of perceptual errors. Actions that

Little Skate Fishes Research Paper
Little skate fishes are known to be one of the dominant members of the demersal fish community in
the northwestern Atlantic. They live deep in the ocean, sitting in the ocean floor most of times. They
use these organs called spiracles as I mentioned above, they help the little skate to function oxygen to
reach internal respiratory organs and still intake oxygenated water over their gills. These spiracles are
slit like openings near their eyes. The process goes where water is taken in through the spiracles then
passes over to the gills which then leaves the body through five pairs of gill passageway underneath
the body. These little skate fishes live on by feeding on crabs, sea squirts, worms, squid, mollusks,

Lonergan s Collateral Beauty
The audience for a movie of this kind becomes the lowest common denominator of feeling: a sponge.
So wrote Pauline Kael in response to The Sound of Music, blaming the victims when it was still
politically correct to do so. Looking into Hollywood s dollar sign eyes quickly explains how the film
industry sidestepped laying prostrate at Kael s hemline, and yet how often have shameless tearjerkers
really run the table at the box office in this millennium? Do modern audiences still need their catharsis
delivered via the safety of chosen trigger warnings? Has the nobility of the collective cry been
mitigated by just how many actual life opportunities we ve been dealt?
In a recent podcast, Film Comment explored the film function most regularly maligned by, well, the
magazine s core demographic: jerking tears. And they wisely included among that week s panel one of
high culture s lone remaining proponents of craft driven cinematic populism: Mark Harris. The panel
congregated around writer director Kenneth Lonergan s funereal Manchester by the Sea,
understandably, but one regrets that they didn t wait a few weeks for the arrival of David Frankel s

Essay on James I influence in Shakespeare s Writing
After the Christian conquest across Europe during the medieval period other beliefs were restricted.
This period was very authoritarian but later the Renaissance unlocked opportunities to the imagination
and the idea of supernatural started to bloom. Although, the supernatural is sometime mistaken with
the gods of certain religions, believing in ghosts and witches was independent from the people chosen
religion. The question of the existence of the supernatural, or something bigger than us, in 16th
century Europe focused mainly on God from the Christian perspective. During this time other
supernatural characters were brought to light, affecting the politics of the monarchies as it did during
the rule of King James I in England. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tragedy of Macbeth, darker and more cynical (BBC Higher Bitesize English Background:
Revision 1), written during the Jacobean period, reflected the insecurities of the time for the many
prosecutions made by James. The idea of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth s conspiracy is said to be
inspired from the Gunpowder Plot when Guy Fawkes and his men tried to blow up James and his
parliament in 1605 (BBC Higher Bitesize English Background: Revision 2). This plot resulted in strict
penalties on Roman Catholics and therefore created a feeling of terror among the population. It is also
said that Shakespeare included Banquo in Macbeth in honor of the Stuarts: Banquo is of a political
nature. It was believed at the time Macbeth was written that King James was Banquo s direct
descendant, and this presumption might have influenced Shakespeare s characterization of Banquo as
an innocent victim rather than an assassin. (Mabillard 19) At the beginning Banquo s trust in Macbeth
show the morals of a loyal friend and responsibility men as he does not try to hurry the process of his
fate reveled by the witches. Historically, in the book Holinshed s Chronicles Banquo becomes an
accomplice in the murder of King Duncan (Mabillard 17). Macbeth changes his role in Duncan s
murder to show his support for King

Manscaping Imgut Summary
Immergut is a professor of sociology at the University of New York Purchase; in this piece, he uses
the IMRAD format to convey his theories and information he has collected on the modern act of
Manscaping . IMRAD stands for Introduction, Methods, Research, and Discussion. (Green, Lindinsky
pg551) Though his essay is not clearly labeled were he changes from one section to the next it is
obvious to the reader where he moves on from one section of the format to the next. In his opening
paragraph Immergut starts out by sharing his own personal experience with manscaping. He attempts
to appeal to his reader s pathos by telling the story of the first time he decided to shave his stomach
hair, giving the reader details of his emotional reaction during the expectance. This also gives them an
idea of his ethos through showing the audience he has personal experience with the subject. When I
finished. I stroked my smooth abdomen and felt proud Like a suburbanite gazing with satisfaction
across his freshly mowed lawn (Immergut 1) This analogy is the first time Immergut introduces his
correlation between the word manscape and landscape. His theory is that manscaping Reflects a
culturally pervasive story about man against an untamed nature . (Immergut 2) Which he goes into
detail about in the second paragraph. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

his claims of the cultural reasons for the shift in body hair then ties it back into his theory of it being a
need to control nature. Because his subject is about a modern idea it is easy to use pathos and logos to
connect his ideas easily to his reader who has personal experience

Charlie Chaplin s Contributions to the Film Industry
Charlie Chaplin Every day millions of Americans go to theaters with their families to enjoy movies.
Watching films has become one of the most popular activities to do. Although plenty of people know
of Charlie Chaplin, most do not know any real information about him. Charlie Chaplin has been a
major contributor to America s advancement in the film industry from his innovative beginnings, and
perseverance to improve and succeed, to his overall achievements in history. Charlie Chaplin was born
in South London on April 16, 1889. He was the first child of Hannah and Charles Chaplin. Charles
was vaudeville actor. Hannah was a vaudeville singer. Charlie s father was a drunk and he later left his
family when he was three years old when he found out his wife had an affair with another actor, Leo
Dryden. They soon had a child named George, who left to live with his father. Since Hannah was now
a single mother, she was struggling to find a way to provide for her children. She had another son that
was older than Charlie, from a previous relationship (Schwartz). Hannah s singing alone was not
enough to earn her the money to care for two boys. She took up sweatshop work on a sewing machine
she rented to earn extra income. Due to the small amount of income they had, Charlie s family moved
in and out of orphanages and boys homes on a regular basis. Hannah s career as a singer ended
abruptly in 1894. She lost her voice during a performance. While the crowd was getting rowdy and

Importance of Setting in The Luxe
It was the old New York way...the way of people who dreaded scandal more than disease, who placed
decency about courage, and who considered that nothing was more ill bred than scenes, except the
behavior of those who gave rise to them (Wharton, Prologue). Because every time period has different
beliefs and traditions, setting is vital to a novel. In The Luxe, the young and determined socialites
lives are greatly affected by the setting. In this novel, teenage elites struggle to decide whether they
should follow society s rules or their hearts. One such example is when a socialite, Elizabeth Holland,
falls in love with a coachman. Since her family is in debt, Elizabeth s mother wants her to marry
someone wealthy. However, instead of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

that was arranged marriages. A father pronounced, So there will be no more embarrassing me

must marry a lady. Not a Penelope. A girl with morals, whom the voters like. A girl who will make
you look respectable. A girl... A girl like Elizabeth Holland, say (Godbersen 53 54). In this quote, the
author shows how controlling the parents were then as opposed to now. However, this is normal
because what was normal for people in the past is probably not typical for those of today. This quote
also makes the reader feel shocked and surprises. Another custom that one of the main characters
dislikes is not exactly a custom but, the customs on a particular day. That particular day would happen
to be Sunday. Diana rants, She hated Sundays because they usually started with church and ended with
informal visiting hours, although informal was a completely erroneous way of describing these visits,
as everything was done appropriately and triple chaperoned by their mother, their divorced Aunt
Edith, and a small army of help (Godbersen 90). This quote conveys to the reader a certain feeling of
boredom, monotony, and that they have to sit quietly for the long informal

Similarities Between Bergman And Ingmar Bergman
Ingmar Bergman. Ingmar Bergman s films commonly deal with his doubts about the existence of God,
earning him the sobriquet the protestant atheist . His religious interests came from his childhood. His
father, Erik, was a Lutheran pastor of the old school. Although the two never had a close relationship,
Ingmar would often travel with his father to country parishes, where he listened to the sermons and
hymns and studied the icons and architecture to pass the time during services that seemed interminable
to a restless young boy. His relationship with his mother Karin wasn t any more nurturing and Ingmar
grew up in a lonely house. He found solace in Puppet Theater and projections. Throughout his long
film career Bergman continued to deal with themes of psychological torment, ... Show more content

Its focus is more on psychological trauma; the explosion of fear and emotion when facing past regrets.
There is however, a direct correlation between the two. Unlike The Seventh Seal, the religious element
in Wild Strawberries is minor even though both are variations on the questions that constitute the
majority of comprehensive themes in Bergman s work. In both films the protagonist must face the
truth about his past and present. This is achieved here through what Carl Jung called The Night Sea
Journey . A journey into the individuals own subconscious. Dreams and hallucinations are the most
accessible mediums of this type of psychic trip; the proximity of death as in Wild Strawberries and
The Seventh Seal can provide a catalyst for such a journey. Bergman has an ability to convince an
audience that the dream sequence projected on the screen, while inherently artificial is believable. It is
through these dream sequences that Bergman s symbolism becomes enigmatic, probing the recesses of
the individuals psyche and the complexities of human relationships that could not otherwise be

ABSTRACT
In the present work, PVAAg nanocomposite films with thickness 0.18 mm, constant silver content
(0.4 wt. %) and different time of reactions (0.1, 3, 5, 7, 9 h) were prepared by chemical reduction
methods. Surface topology, optical and electrical properties of PVAAg nanocomposite were studied
using absorption spectroscopy, electrometer, atomic force microscope (AFM) and photoluminescence
(PL) spectroscopy were used to characterize the prepared nanocomposites. Optical absorption
coefficient studies showed a peak at 427 nm for all samples, in addition to the peak at 200 nm for
undoped PVA film. There is observable change in the absorbed intensity at 427 nm with the time of
reaction. The refractive index was found increase with increasing the time of reaction. It was found
that the root mean square (RMS) roughness. Frank poole emission is the prevailing transport
mechanism for all samples. While PL intensity at 427 nm increase as the time of reaction is increased.

  • 2. Labour Day In The Late 1800s Labor Day occurs every first Monday in September. It is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. Labor Day was created by the 19th century labor movement (Labor Day, 2010). It became a federal holiday in 1894. To some Americans, Labor Day symbolizes the end of the summer. It is celebrated with parties, parades, and athletic events. Labor Day originated during the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States which was in the late 1800s (Labor Day, 2010). Around this time, the average American worked 12 hours days and seven days a week. Even though there were regulations in some of the states, children who were as young as 5 or 6 worked in mills, factories and mines. They only earned a fraction of what the adults were earning. Everyone, who worked, endured extremely unsafe working conditions, such as insufficient amounts of fresh air, sanitary facilities and breaks. When manufacturing increasingly supplanted agriculture as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were even a few states that passed legislation recognizing it. However, Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later when a moment in American labor history brought the worker s rights into public view. On May 11, 1892, Pullman Palace Car Company s employees in Chicago went on strike to protest the wage cuts and the firing of the union representatives. On June 26, led by Eugene V. Debs, the American Railroad Union called for a boycott of the Pullman railway cars (Labor Day, 2010). This was going to hurt the railroad traffic nationwide. The federal government dispatched troops to Chicago to break the strike. This caused deaths in more than 12 workers. After several days of unrest and trying to repair ties with the American workers, Congress passed an act that made Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the surrounding ... • 3. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi And The Prosperity Workers The Prosperity Workers There are many types of people around the world who help others in the pursuit of social justice. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Cesar Chavez, and Wangari Maathai are some of the type who were looking for justice, equality, and equal opportunities. These human rights activists all fought for their rights and persisted in trying to make a change in the world around them. One of the most popular human rights activists who fought for racial equality, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi would stop at no length to achieve this. Gandhi developed his philosophy of Satyagraha, or resistance through non violent civil disobedience to defend his rights and the rights of all Indians and non whites. Practices of Satyagraha included boycotts, protest marches, and fasts. He encouraged others to defend their rights in this manner, and to work together to end racial injustice in South Africa (Study Synce). One for encouraging people to face their fears,Gandhi would let people get out of their comfort zones and fight for what is theirs; With this, Gandhi would also have people who did not agree with him. The author stated that Gandhi was sent to prison for 6 years, Gandhi had been thrown off a train in South America because he was Indian, and had attempts of assassination against him, the final one being successful from a Buddhist extremist Nathuram Vinayak Godse (Sivananda). Even though Gandhi had faced obstacles such as these, nevertheless, people still rallied to him and supported him during troubling times, this would help Gandhi achieve racial justice. Gandhi s firm and tenacious adherence to the cause of the poor, the downtrodden Harijans, and the common man of the Indian village, is indeed worthy of emulation. Through all the vicissitudes of time and power and fame, he kept before the vision of the Indian Congress the fundamental purpose for which it came into being the amelioration of the suffering of the poor. Uncrowned king of the land, he remained a friend of the poor; he lived for them, moved among them as one of them, and served them with all his heart. He saw God in them, and in their service wore out his body (Sivananda). As seen from what Gandhi had done and how people were inspired by him, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Killer At Thurston High Essay Jarriett Hicks EDU 3800 OL1 The Killer at Thurston High The Killer at Thurston High, discussed a teenager named Kip who experienced psychological, emotional, and peer stress in early childhood. Violent and disturbing outburst was often a result of his actions, causing catastrophic traumas to his community and family. The film goes into depth explaining the relationship of Kip s immediate family and his individual characteristics. The Kinkel family was well known, sophisticated and quite until violence struck. Kip Kinkel s parents were Spanish teachers who expected high academic performances from their children. Both parents had a good life educating students and decided to start their own family in Springfield, OR. Known by nearly the entire town, the Kinkel s were the ideal middle class family. During early school years Kip struggled with phonics and numbers. His parents held him back in the first grade because they agreed he did not meet satisfactory standards. This mainly was because Kip often confused E s with 3 s and B s with D s to later find out he suffered with Dyslexia. Kip has always resented his parents for holding him back in the first grade in which I believe, sparked his troubled adolescence. During Kips early years, he felt that he was often compared to his older sister, Kristin, who was perfect at everything and was able to do simple things such as handstands and cartwheels. The video shows a recording of the family outside in the park playing around. I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Guilt In Art Spiegelman s Maus Being Jewish during the Holocaust must be terrifying. Overcoming all odds of being put into a ghetto guarded by a Gestapo and being transferred into a concentration camp to be put into intense labor is pure luck, but not for Vladek Spiegelman. In Art Spiegelman s Graphic Novel Maus, a comic book not only about Vladek s first hand experience through the Holocaust but also a relationship of a father and son. This relationship is an important narrative all through Maus, and this influences the feeling of guilt. Two different kinds of guilt are presented in this book: a familial guilt, and the survivor s guilt. In Maus, a specific relevance is a familial guilt that connects to the family. Artie s feeling of not being a son to his father, which feeling guilty happens throughout in the book. In the first couple of chapters of Maus: My Father Bleeds History, we see that Vladek and Artie don t get along. They both live close together, yet they don t visit each other. When they speak to one another, their tone sound like an argument is about to break out. Before Ode to Auttumn, Keats is a poet with an insatiable desire for the joy of life but in the ode Keats reaches a stage of impersonality where the process of death and decay are acceptable to him. It is the most perfect of the odes of Keats. Keats with all his poetic qualities is here in the poem which has a unique and perfect expression even the severest critic finds no fault. In it there is no looking before and after, no pining for what is not, but a complete negation of his own self. It is an objective presentation of the truth of life. The poem was written at a time when Keats had a lot of pain and adversity around him. Tom was already dead, Goerge wanted to go to America and Keats being the eldest had to arrange for money. His own love for Fanny Brawne was a cause of much agony for him. There is much pain at the back but the delights of literature are also with him. The Sunday walk by the River Itchen proved soothing and he drank deep the screne beauty of nature which resulted in his Ode to Autumn. Keats narrates a beautiful season to us and he does it in an objective way, Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness/ Close bosom friend of the maturing sun;/ Conspiring with him how to load and bless/ With fruit the vines that round the thatch eves run. • 8. Three Laws Of Robotics The Three Laws of Robotics were formulated by Isaac Asimov with the aim of creating a trusted protection of humans from robots and vice versa. However, Asimov s short stories quite usually challenge the rules that he has created. This essay will discuss three Asimov short stories that present us with certain flaws in regards to the Three Laws of Robotics. The three stories will be Liar! , Runaround , and That Thou Art Mindful of Him . Through Liar! , Asimov is able to question the meaning of harm, he is thus able to show that a problem will arise when considering what sort of harm robots can protect us from. Through the short story Runaround , Asimov questions the importance of each Law, creating scenarios in which a robot has to disobey ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this short story, it is seen that a development which is meant to enhance the ability of robots to adhere to the Three Laws leads to the opening of a whole new realm of problems. Keith Harriman, director of US Robots, explains that a certain model of robots is being reproduced to have the ability to weigh every human being giving it an order in terms of factors such as age, gender and intelligence (Asimov 1974: 609 610). Understandably, this supposed improvement to the robot is meant to ensure that the robots ability to follow the rules is improved. More specifically, it is meant to strengthen their adherence to the Second Law, which states, A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law (Asimov 1974: page 605). However, in practice, this development would actually break the First Law of Robotics. Keith Harriman states, A robot they say, has no right to brand this person or that person as inferior. By accepting the orders of A in preference to that of B, B is branded as of less consequence than A and his human rights are violated. (Asimov 1974: page 609) This statement illustrates that a robot that follows an order of one human being in favour of another, would be breaking the First Law of Robotics because the other human being would feel inferior and would be ... Michelangelo s Madonna Of The Repairs Many people who were involved in scholarly work have come to an agreement that much of the fine artistic work in the Western countries can be traced from the Italian Renaissance, which occurred in the period between 1400 and 1550. The period was characterized by architectural studies that involved the ancient civilizations in which great architects, such as Masaccio, managed to develop chiaroscuro that was about making objects appear in three dimensions by light and shade use. • 12. The Cantigas De Santa Maria Essay The Cantigas de Santa Maria is one of the largest collections of monophonic songs from the Middle Ages and is branded by the mention of the Virgin Mary in all 427 songs. The Cantigas are written in Galician Portuguese, a poetic language in Castile at the time. The musical forms within the Cantigas, are still being studied. There is a plethora of variations, but no musical forms have been considered standard. In my analysis, I noticed a relationship between the refrain and the end of the stanzas which tend to repeat the same melodic material. The refrain begins the poem and is repeated after each stanza; in addition, the final portion of the stanza is displayed on the refrain, beckoning its imminent return. Each Cantiga has very in depth syllabic patterns that work in attendem with the repeated refreain After reviewing the translations of my Cantigas it seems the verse of the repeated refrain ties in the moral of the poem and offers praise to Holy Mary. An example is the refrain in Cantiga 36, a ship at sea. We should all love with all our will the lady who frees us from troubles and storms. The refrain in my opinion eludes to the idea of storm being a metaphor for the trouble you face in everyday life, and you must praise in the storm so that the Virgin Mary can eviscerate the darkness in your life. Another stand out feature of the Cantigas are the illuminations that accompany them in the codices. These beautiful illustrations map out the story of the Cantiga, and ... It s actually a physical reaction, meaning that all the substances to the reaction are still there, just rearranged. (Spurting Science) This physical reaction is caused by nucleation. Carbon dioxide is in the Diet Coke, trying to escape. It s looking for any nucleation sites it can attach to, like any bumps or crevices in the Mentos. When the Mentos are dropped into the Diet Coke, it disrupts the polar attractions between the water molecules. The carbon dioxide will begin to attach to the nucleation sites and form bubbles. The bubbles will quickly release from the Mentos and rise to the top. Carbon dioxide will continue to attach to the nucleation sites and the process will continuously repeat. Abstract In this project, I fabricated thin films of cobalt iron alloy of different thickness by electrodeposition technique and studied the domain and dynamics of the domain walls by taking measurements from magnetic force microscopy (MFM). I measured the roughness by taking measurements from Atomic force microscopy. I characterized the films with XRD which showed the crystal structure of the film. The SEM images of Cobalt iron film exhibited nano crystallized structure and the variation of granular size as a function of the potential at which the film deposited. On the eve of the American Civil War, a struggle whose death toll surpassed 600,000 troops, it is easy to imagine that many citizens would have agreed with the founding father. And, loss of life was not the only problem caused by the fight. In the wake of the Civil War, Americans of all races faced the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, crippling personal debt, ambiguity regarding the redistribution of southern land, and a divisive political conflict over which branch of the federal government processes the most authority. However, a litany of problems also served as impetus for the American Civil War with slavery, disagreement regarding division of new territory, dispute over the precedence of federal or state government, and the overarching inability of politicians to compromise topping the list. When examining the merit of the Civil War, the question becomes: Did the Civil War create more problems than it solved? No. When compared side by side, a list of post war problems may be longer, but the Civil War ended the country s practice of slavery. Slavery is the egregious and eternally unjustifiable act of keeping human beings as belongings and forcing them into labor. Slavery is evil. The American Civil War freed slaves, making it a struggle of exceptional merit and benefit. • 37. Second Great Awakening Movement A second great awakening emerged toward the end of the eighteenth century in New England. Unlike the first great awakening, this movement of the Holy Spirit used intellectual institutions of higher learning as the spark that ignited this awakening that eventually spread across this new nation. Yale University with its president, Timothy Dwight, the grandson of Jonathan Edwards is seen as one ignition points of this movement. The early fruit of this movement included the founding of many organizations dedicated to making the gospel known across this new land and across the globe. Mission organizations such as the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions are seen as a direct fruit of this movement. Another important outcome of this movement is seen in the breaking down of ethnic origins and religious affiliations. In other words, as immigrants flooded into America and moved west into the new frontier, religious affiliations they brought with them faded away. An example of how this worked is seen in the Methodist camp meetings and the circuit riding Methodist preachers who brought the gospel into these new areas and to the new citizens living in these areas. • 38. Heart Rate Variability ( Hrv ) Heart rate variability (HRV) is quickly becoming a buzz word in fitness, but in reality this is a very old technology. Dating back to at least 1948 (15) HRV has been a commonly used method in research and is an accepted diagnostic tool in several diseases/conditions, such as post traumatic stress disorder and type 2 diabetes (9, 23). HRV was, until recently, a tool that was confined to clinical and research settings, largely due to the prohibitively high cost of equipment. Recent advances in technology, particularly among heart rate monitors and smartphone based apps, have now made this technology available to fitness professionals and health/fitness consumers. HRV is derived from mathematical properties of cardiac inter beat intervals or what is referred to as a R R interval. This inter beat interval represents tiny changes in the timing (i.e. fractions of a second) from one heart beat to the next. Intuitively it would seem that a heart rate of 60 bpm would have exactly 1 second between each beat. It even seems reasonable that a very metronomic or steady heart rate would be indicative of health and/or fitness. In fact, just the opposite is true. A healthy cardiovascular control system will have a high level of complexity, or variability, while an aged, unfit or diseased system will show a loss of complexity or variability (21). Enhancement of optical and electrical studies on PVAAg nanocomposite films xxxxxxxxxxx Physics Department, Faculty of Science, Suez Canal University, Ismailia, Egypt ABSTRACT In the present work, PVAAg nanocomposite films with thickness 0.18 mm, constant silver content (0.4 wt. %) and different time of reactions (0.1, 3, 5, 7, 9 h) were prepared by chemical reduction methods. Surface topology, optical and electrical properties of PVAAg nanocomposite were studied using absorption spectroscopy, electrometer, atomic force microscope (AFM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy were used to characterize the prepared nanocomposites. Optical absorption coefficient studies showed a peak at 427 nm for all samples, in addition to the peak at 200 nm for undoped PVA film. There is observable change in the absorbed intensity at 427 nm with the time of reaction. The refractive index was found increase with increasing the time of reaction. It was found that the root mean square (RMS) roughness. Frank poole emission is the prevailing transport mechanism for all samples. While PL intensity at 427 nm increase as the time of reaction is increased. Keywords: UV Vis spectroscopy, electrical properties, polyvinyl alcohol.
