Reflection About Friendship
My partner, Naeem Mohammad, and I met on December 9. During our last meeting together, we
drove around St. Louis and had dinner at Raising Cane s, while talking about college system and
family. Again, Naeem has greatly improved his English since our last meeting on November 18th.
We were able to talk more in detail about the Saudi Arabian college system and family back in
Saudi Arabia. This parallels a development breakthrough in my revival of Chinese: Siri can
recognize me speaking in Chinese. While not something I should be particularly proud of, I can
make this connection between this and development of Naeem s language throughout the
semester. He can hold longer conversations, and his vocabulary has improved to the point where
he told me that he can skip a level of English. This reminds me of being able to understand one s
strengths and weaknesses, because it can make a difference in how one approach life. This is
key when we discussed the above topics, where I rarely had to help him finish his sentences and
can describe situations well. Speaking of which, as Naeem drove me around St. Louis, we talked
about the financial aid system at SLU and the college system in Saudi Arabia, where I told him
about 97% of the students here receive grants, loans, and work study. In contrast, he told me that
not only Saudi Arabian college is free, but students also receive a $300 allowance per month. This
is reminiscent of when my father went to college after the universities in China opened after the
Cultural Revolution, where tuition, and room and board were free, and they also give a sum of

with college, and I can attest that to China as well, where education today is compulsory until the

Cheyenne Dickenson AAD 410 Winter 2017 Lane County Historical Museum On February 7th we
visited the Lane County Historical Museum. Faith Kreskey, the exhibits curator, facilitated the tour,
and gave us an inside look at her job and the challenges of the museum. Topics included: staffing,
collections care, facilities, budgeting, the museum s recent history, community partnerships, and
exhibits. One theme I kept coming up against was the idea of a history museum. In the context of a
mid size western American county, it seems that cutting the exhibits to around 1920 is extremely

The readings from these past weeks on on issues of race and cultural patrimony were too
informative considering the Native American exhibits I have attended, my work in an anthropology
museum, and anthropology classes I have taken. Somehow, Cooper s The Long Road to
Repatriation provided more context and weight to the historical atrocities against Native Americans
than any of my other educational experiences. To be fair, I am not a scholar of Native history, but I
am certainly not uninformed, and it should not take a scholar or be a native person to understand
these issues. As Lonetree mentioned, the Holocaust Museum presents a difficult subject and forces
the visitor to confront inhumanity (106). I think the impact of this information as an educational
experience in a museum would have a huge impact on current social and political tensions. I hope
to see museums make more concerted efforts to educate the public. Too many exhibits are of the
passive, didactic looking than like the engaging Object Stories program (Dartt, Murawski). Exhibits
should seek to tell untold narratives, and programs should be places of communication and cross

Not only are the illustrations magnificent, but the repeating phrases demand that children repeat
them in the character s voices, making the story hilarious and irresistible! What makes it even
better is that a child is the hero in the end. Our love and enthusiasm for a book can be contagious

At the beginning of the 19th Psalm, David writes, The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies
proclaim the work of his hands. Gerald Manley Hopkins seems to echo this theme in his poem,
God s Grandeur. The interesting aspects of this poem are a result of Hopkins different perspectives
on nature. In the beginning of the poem, Hopkins directs his focus on the glory of God through the
lens of the world. There is then a turning point where he diverts his attention to the problems
mankind inflicts upon creation. However, the closing of the poem involves him stepping back and
reflecting upon the eternality of God. God s Grandeur is interwoven with powerful imagery that is
evoked by elaborate double entendres that reflect the interaction between humans, nature, and the
eternal grandeur of God that surpasses Earth, which though temporary, is under constant care from

skills. From my perspective, I believe that early theories have provided a good understanding of
children and their progress. In early theories, the environment was said to greatly influence a child

I think that people can be antisocial and unkind to others and decide that because they are in a
