Cell Organelles And Structures
tion of Cell Organelles
Cells are surrounded with a boundary known as the cell surface membrane and as well as holding
the cell together, being semi permeable, it controls the movement of materials across it. Within the
cell are a number of structures each which have specific functions. These structures are known as
organelles. The cell surface membrane and the membranes of any of the membrane bound
organelles described below are made of the same material, a double layer of phospholipid
molecules. Within the cell surface membrane, the intracellular space known as the cytoplasm,
contains all the organelles and a fluid known as cytosol. Within the cytosol is a network of
microtubules and fibres called the cytoskeleton. This cytoskeleton s main functions are to give
support to the cell helping to maintain its shape and aid the movement of organelles. Most cell
organelles and structures are common to both animal and plant cells but there are some
differences as outlined in the table below and as seen in fig. 1 and fig. 2.

Martin Luther King, The Southern Christian Leadership...
Under the leadership of Martin Luther King, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference
(SCLC), bought the Black Civil Rights Movement and his desegregation concepts to Birmingham
in 1963 for several reasons. The most pivotal of these reasons being his African American racial
status and his Christian faith which drove him to fight for the rights his people deserved.
He believed that the most racial injustice lay not only in the Southern states of America but in
Birmingham, Alabama as expressed in his 1963 Letter from a Birmingham Jail, to fellow clergymen
who criticized his methods, King stating, I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. In
Birmingham, much like other Southern American States public facilities such as parks, movie
theatres, lunch bars, restaurants, and water fountains were segregated (African Americans had
different, lesser facilities than the Whites) which ultimately led King, SCLC, and ordinary African
American citizens to hold these non violent protests to have the desegregation they had sought after
for many years.
His second reason to bring the Black Civil Rights Movement to Birmingham was due to their
Commissioner of Public Safety, Eugene Bull Connor. Connor was greatly opposed to the idea of
segregation and King knew Connor s reaction to the non violent movement he had proposed would
be one of violence and aggression. The town also had a history of extreme violence, not only
towards African Americans but nigger lovers alike. Examples

What Is The Most Important Result Of The Columbian Exchange
Issue Paper 2
Tino LoGerfo
History 105
What many people only know about Christopher Columbus s expedition is that he found the
Americas. While this is true, he did find a completely new frontier that was unknown to the Old
World, his findings re shaped global consumption patterns from the seventeenth century. He found a
New World filled with resources that the old world hasn t seen before. When he found the new
world he brought with him European plants and animal species that were foreign to the citizens of
the New World. The Columbian Exchangeintroduced many foods that are still essential to
consumption in today s world along with the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. The potato is a
prime example of how the Columbian Exchange changed global consumption patterns because it
was nutritious and had an abundant amount of calories in it and caused a mass population
increase in areas where the potato was available. The use of slaves also increased exponentially
when sugar cane was introduced. This was a very cheap, productive way to produce a large
amount of sugar and it was used by many Old World countries. The findings of these new world
products created a rise in global consumption and production because products were introduced to
the both the New World and the Old World and there instantly became a large spike in the
availability of products. Along with this, the old world decided to go out and get themselves
involved in the New World because they saw an opportunity

Essay on Horror Theories in Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2
Horror movies are based on humanity s disturbing, inner thoughts that are kept hidden by
sophisticated and civilized facades. The fact that people pay money to go watch their own race
be slaughtered shows that civilization has two sides. There are many theories as to why humans
act the way they do, such as Steven King s beast within and potential lyncher theories and Stanley
Solomon s exploration and romantic isolationism theories. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2
does a fantastic job of displaying these theories about the horror genre if one knows what they are
looking for. Learning about why humans react the way they do to horror films based on the
theories of well known psychologists and horror writers can teach humans a... Show more content

He also believed that since everybody is insane, insanity comes down to how insane someone is
(785). King s potential lyncher theory correlates with the beast within theory. This theory simply
explains that everyone has the potential to a masked murderer if they don t keep their dark sides
tamed (785). Stanley Solomon s exploration theory is a very well known theory in the horror
genre. The theory is the reasoning behind why characters in horror movies always act so
irrationally and brainless. Why is it that the defenseless girl always puts herself in a dangerous state
by exploring? Sometimes it is ironic that the victim is lurking around in a dangerous place because
they have yet to be informed that a monster is in their presence (795). Other times though, the
victim explores even though they know they are putting themselves in danger (795). As one
watches these movies, they typically pity the character. The fact that the viewer sympathizes the
victim for acting so absurd tells humans something about themselves. They want to explore as well
(795). As audiences watch, they want to cover their eyes in fear, but force themselves to watch the
film anyways. Solomon predicts in his theory that humans do this because the ultimate irrationality
of this typical moment of horror in the nightmare film represents our own subconscious desire to
confront our inevitable dread: to meet death before we really

A physical change is one that affects only the physical properties of a substance, while a chemical
change alters a substance at the molecular level.
Physical Properties: A property that can be observed or measured without changing the chemical
identity of the substance.
Physical properties can be categorized as either intensive or extensive.
Reactivity:
An element or compound s reactivity is its ability or capacity to react, or bond, with another
substance. As you continue through this course, you will observe and compare this particular
chemical property in a variety of scenarios.
Flammability:
One type of chemical reaction, called combustion, involves the burning of various compounds and
elements. Some substances are more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most decomposition reactions require energy, usually in the form of heat or electricity, to be added
in order for the reaction to occur.
In a decomposition reaction, a single compound undergoes a reaction that produces more than one
product. The following general equation illustrates decomposition reactions:
AB в†’ A + B
AB is a compound made of two or more elements. A and B are individual elements or compounds.
Types of Decomposition Reactions: Binary compound, metal carbonate, metal chlorate, metal
hydroxide, oxyacids
In a combustion reaction, a compound or element reacts with oxygen, releasing a large amount of
energy in the form of light and heat.
they are exothermic, which means that energy is released by the reaction.
Many combustion reactions involve the burning of organic compounds called hydrocarbons,
compounds containing the elements carbon and hydrogen, or other organic compounds. When a
hydrocarbon is burned completely, the products of the combustion reaction are usually carbon
dioxide and water. Natural gas, propane, and wood all burn to produce carbon dioxide and water as
the products.
Not all combustion reactions involve organic compounds made of carbon and hydrogen
(nonorganic compounds), which means that the products are not always

Games of the Ancient Olympics Essay
Games of the Ancient Olympics
The Olympics began in ancient Olympia Greece, which lies 10km east of Pirgos, in a valley
between Mt. Kronos, the Alfios river, and the Kladeos. This area was inhabited by the Pisans,
whose King was Oinomaus. His daughter Hippodameia had married Pelops, and it has been said
that the first games were held in their honor around 1000 B.C. Through the years the games began
to attract interest in nearby towns. In 776 B.C. , the leader of the Eleians, Iphitos, rededicated the
games to the honor of Zeus, (the most important god in the ancient Greek pantheon). As a result of
the religious nature of the games, all wars would cease during the contests. The original games

The pentathlon was said to be invented by Jason, who combined the five events and awarded the
first prize to a friend, Peleus, who placed second in everything except for wrestling, which he placed
first. The pentathlon was a combination of light events: jumping, running, javelin and heavy
events: discus and wrestling. While it remains unknown how the decision of the winner was made,
it is believed that the last two winners confronted each other in wrestling, with the winner declared
pentathlon victor. Speed, strength, skill, and endurance are all qualities necessary to participate in
the pentathlon. A quote from Aristotle, The pentathletes are the best, because they are naturally
endowed with both strength and speed (Foundation of the Hellenic World [FHW], 1). Boxing, added
in 688 B.C., was first mentioned in Homeric poems, and was held in honor of Patroclus. It is said
that Apollo, who defeated and killed Phorbus, was the inventor of the boxing event. The ancient
boxing differed in many ways from the modern boxing that we are used to. While having no time
limit to the fight, opponents fought until one raised his hand in defeat, or fell knocked out or dead.
An effective tactic of ancient boxing was positioning your opponent to face the sun, blinding him
with the glare. When a match would stalemate, the contestants had the option of klimax, which
meant both men stood still and allowed his opponent a blow without making an attempt to avoid it.

Stereotyping In Classroom
I was surprised that the author felt the need to tell students to avoid stereotyping their professors.
However, I felt this was a good point to mention, since making assumptions about people should
have no part in the classroom. I was also surprised that the author seemed upset that students
presumed her to be a nice person when she had clearly stated she was not a nice teacher on the
syllabus. Hoping your professor is nice and understanding is not stereotyping; it is students
expecting collegeto be like high school.
I think the best piece of effort given by the author is to make the extra effort. The author advises
that if you are given a chance to do another draft or lab, take it. If your professor suggests attending

The Ethics Of A Vegan Diet
The first things that come to a person mind when they hear the word, vegan , are usually protest
for animal rights, salads, and a lack of protein, but the question is does he/she really know what
being a vegan is all about? Veganism is the practice of abstaining away from the use of any product
that uses animals, commonly associated with the cruel treatment of animals and make up thirty one
percent of the population worldwide. An ethical vegan is a form of veganismwere a person does not
use any product that has been tested on an animal or is made from an animal. A dietary vegan is
a form of veganism were a person does not consume any product made from, by, or out of an
animal. Many people believe that veganism is unnecessary because not all animal are treated bad
or :it s to hard, or it s bad for the body. Although some people believe that, realistically, a vegan diet
comes with an abound of benefits for animals, the body and the environment.
To begin, a vegan diet is a way to end animal cruelty in factories and farms. Animal cruelty begins
in giant indoor farms that keep animal confined to cages and barely have any sunlight, known as
animal factories, so that countries can meet the demand for meat, cheeses and other products. Two
thirds of the animal population, which include chickens, turkey, cow, pigs and other commonly
eaten animals, live in these factories but the animals are not in healthy environment at all. The
animals live there own waste in small, confined

Mid Term Break By Seamus Heaney Analysis
Callie Chang
Death brings numerous types of emotions: fear, grief, sorrow, shock, and confusion the list goes
on. All of which of course depend on each person. The reactions to the death of a close relative
may differ from person to person depending on various factors such as the relationship that the
two people shared or the prior experiences each person has had with the deaths of loved ones
some may simply be used to it or on the other hand be completely naГЇve, which would be a hard
blow. It also differs with the age of the person experiencing it because a small child for instance
would not be old enough to completely grasp the concept of death. In the poem Mid Term Break

In the third stanza, he mentions the baby cooing and laughing, which almost gives the
impression that all is well and nothing is wrong. At this part of the poem, readers may feel relief,
but Heaney does an impressionable job playing with the readers emotions with lines in which he
writes that the corpse was stanched and bandaged by the nurses and in a state where he suffered
critical injuries and was treated at the hospital. It is easily inferable that Heaney made the decision
to include all these misleading clues to also portray his own confusion with what was happening at
the time; these clues give the reader the same kind of confusion with the general atmosphere and
subject of death. However, as much as Heaney deliberately or unintentionally misleads the

Abgenix was in the eve of its big decision. ABX EGF program was perhaps the biggest decision
management. In preclinical trials; ABX EGF was so successful that it had attracted a number of
potential partners. Abgenix had three different options. Pharmacol, Biopart and go it alone.
Abgenix had to decide whether to: License ABX EGF to a pharmaceutical company which would
do all further testing and commercialization. (This was the option of Pharmacol. Abgenix would
bear little risk and receive license royalties.)
Use a joint venture with a biotechnology company to complete the testing and commercialization.
(This was the option of Biopart. Abgenix would bear moderate risk but split profits.)
Pursue the ABX EGF project as a solo venture. (This was the option of going alone. Abgenix
would bear all risks but gather all the profits.)
F. Conclusion and Recommendations:
Abgenix was about to make an important decision.
The advantages of having a partner are as follows: Additional resources and cash to develop ABX
EGF properly, Decreasing the risk of Abgenix if ABX EGF runs of either not developing it
properly or that the product turns out to be unsuccessful after Abgenix invests a large amount of

The Negative Effects Of Stress
Stress, what is it, how it Affects you and How to Deal With it
Riley C. Keim
Culver Stockton College
Stress, what is it, how it Affects you and How to Deal With it
Stress can have both positive and negative effects on your body. Stress is what gives a person that
last burst of energy in a competition. Stress is what keeps people up at night, what makes them
stray from their normal diet and it can even go as far as making someone physically ill.
What is stress? Stress is one s body s natural response to threats and pressure. Athletes feel stress
during any game or race, students feel stress before a big test or exam. Workers feel stress when
they are assigned to a big project or up for a promotion. Stress causes feelings of nervousness,
low energy, and even tenses us up and makes us feel on edge and easily irritable. When a person
is stressed out their adrenal gland kicks into overdrive causing high levels of adrenaline in the brain.
Distress is negative stress in a person s life. Examples of distress may include,
The death of a family member
The death of a lifelong friend
Separation from your spouse
The end of a long relationship Having money issues
If distress is not handled correctly it can lead to the feelings of hopelessness, irritability, and even
getting physically ill.
Eustress is the good stress in a person s life. Eustress can be caused by events such as
Entering into big tournaments
Being up for a promotion at work
The holiday seasons

Operations Management Definition
Operations Management Definition
Introduction In today s fast paced ever changing business world, organizations must deal with many
diverse issues. These issues range from maintaining their competitive edge in a fierce marketplace
to social, ethical and concerns regarding the health and well being of their employees. The advent
of new technologies has created organizational efficiencies however; it is a well known fact that
healthcare has lagged behind other industries with regard to automation. Healthcare is being asked
to provide high quality care with increased efficiency yet the patient population believes they are
not receiving quality care. McCleave (1996) states that health care managers should look to
manufacturing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can be accomplished by instituting processes to get patients in to see the respective provider
in a timely manner, and addressing all of the issues in an individual encounter. McCleave (1996)
documents other methods to increase productivity and quality in the healthcare setting. One would
be to create an environment where the physician does only what he needs to do. This means that
physicians need to shed duties that can be handled efficiently and in a cost effective manner by
ancillary personnel, registered nurses or physician s assistants. Office efficiency is another area
where improvements are possible. Processes should be evaluated as they relate to patient
encounters and non value adding steps should be eliminated. When one considers all the
aforementioned possibilities for increasing efficiency it is very likely healthcare will not only
realize cost savings but will be able to provide quality healthcare to the patient population thereby
reducing the possibility of patients returning to the office on an emergent basis.
Conclusion
Operations management is as stated by Henderson is an evolutionary position that is needed for
healthcare to prosper. Healthcare it is in a state of enormous change and is faced with economic,
regulatory, technological and consumer pressures that must be addressed in order for the industry
to fulfill its mission. Operations management will play an integral role in healthcare

Political and Economic Issues Along the U.S. and Mexico...
Introduction and Statement of Purpose According to Jason Riley (2009) there are an estimated ten
to twelve million illegal immigrants living within the United States (p. 54). According to Cieslik,
Felsen, and Kalaitzidis (2009), over half of these illegal immigrants are from Mexico (p. 185).
These population estimates have led the United Statesto take action along our border. We have built
a fence, deployed various surveillance systems, and currently employ thousands of U.S. Border

117). According to an experienced border patrol agent named T.J. Bonner, Intrusions by the
Mexican military to protect drug loads happen all the time (as cited in Buchanan, 2006, p.117).
It is easy to see how U.S. Border Patrol agents and Mr. Buchanan can support the United States
efforts in securing the U.S. Mexico border. Not all of Mr. Buchanan s views are based on
histories of violence from Mexican illegal aliens. As recent as the September 11, 2001 terrorist
attacks, U.S. citizens have realized we are vulnerable to attacks within the United States. This
realization is a valid concern because terrorists could also gain access through this border. The
U.S. Border Patrol has a term called other than Mexican (OTM). Buchanan (2006) stated, A
growing number of OTMs caught at the border now come from the Middle East (p. 15). It is
important to remember that these Middle Easterners are caught at other points of entry, and not
just the U.S. Mexico border. This does show a significant paranoia that many Americans have.
This paranoia can lead to Americans supporting increased border protection. Governor s
Richardson, Napolitano, and Mr. Buchanan all share a similar point of view regarding more
security on our border. Not all Americans share this opinion. Jason Reilly is an editor at the

The Drug Development And Approval Process
As mentioned in class, as well as in the Krishna (2008) article, the drug development and approval
process is an extensive and costly endeavor. The goal of experimental medicine is to increase the
efficiency of drug development by providing a better understanding of the drug s mechanism(s) of
action, dose response, efficacy, and safety, allowing the process to be accelerated for the most
promising and efficacious candidates (Krishna, Herman, Wagner, 2008). Preclinical testing begins
with identifying the ideal drug target. The target should be disease modifying and/or have a proven
function in the pathophysiology of the disease. Target expression should not be uniformly
distributed throughout the body. There should also be a favorable IP condition allowing the drug
freedom to operate without competition. If the druggability is not obvious, a 3D structure for the
target protein or a close homologue should be available for assessment. The target should also have

Tracy Smith Identity
Comparative Literary Essay: Who Am I?
The journey of life does not always lead people to their desired destination; instead it spews them
out into a cold reality where they are not satisfied their our own identity. Everyone is faced with
decisions in life to make; it is ultimately how individuals think and act in these situations that makes
them human and portrays an identity for them. Humans are bound to make mistakes during these
critical decisions that affect both relationships and them as individuals; as a result people are
regretful about their identity. Sooner or later people arrive at a point in life where they want to
reassess themselves, indicating the theme of Rethinking Identity that is associated with search for
an identity, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tracy K. Smith incorporates many instants of imagery in order to convey her message, my arm on
the rest beside yours, our lights pricking at the fog, tugging us patiently. (Smith, 29,29) This picture
is clearly painted in the mind of the reader, further interpretation leads us to believe that Tracy K.
Smith is trying to find direction in life and into how she wants to both act and be perceived, as
but her path is unclear, just as the fog makes our road hazy. The use of imagery is also beneficial
as it gives the reader insight into what Tracy K. Smith thought about her identity at different
points in her life, such an instance is given in her childhood, What did it mean to smooth across
the casket of your belly? What echoed there, if not me . (Smith, 6,7) This shows that Tracy had
thought about her identity in the past, and wondered what it was. It gives the readers a sense of
not knowing themselves, this would push anyone into a search or rethinking an identity, the
same goes for Tracy. Rachel Joyce strategically uses imagery, He wanted to describe what it feels
like to find your boy in a pool of vomit and carry him to bed and mop him up and pretend in the
morning you have not seen that. He wanted to say what it was like to be a child and find the man
who was your father in the same manner. He wanted to say, What happened? Was it me? Am I the
link here? But he didn t. (Joyce, 256) Through Harold s accounts, it becomes undeniable that his
son had put him in a frictional position, mentally challenging Harold, and putting the blame on him.
His son s actions lead Harold to doubt the way he had brought his son up. Imagery paints a picture
to the characters harsh realty in both the novel and poem, which leads us doubtless into why they

Persuasive Speech About Plastic Surgery
Why has society become so obsessed with being perfect? What s wrong with laugh lines near
your mouth, crow s feet by your eyes, and cellulite on your legs? Growing up in today s society
puts a lot of pressure on young men and women to look their best all of the time. People fear the
changes that naturally take place in the aging process and take drastic measures to alter their
appearance. The dangers of getting certain procedures such as botox and collagen injections,

Rhinoplasty, another name for a nose job, has been described as the most difficult of all facial
plastic surgical procedures. As with all surgical procedures there are risks and benefits. When
deciding whether to have the surgery, the patient along with their surgeon needs to weigh the
benefits of rhinoplasty versus the risks and complications. Usually the person who is getting the
surgery only thinks of the benefits the nose job will bring them, which is usually just a
confidence booster. The serious risks that people take when they get rhinoplasty are difficulty
breathing, nose swelling and discoloration, nasal septal perforation (a hole in the nasal septum),
and probably the most important risk the shallow patient is probably thinking: the unsatisfactory
nasal appearance. In an episode of Botched, a famous television show solely based off of plastic
surgeries, a patient wanted her seventh nose job. Terry Dubrow, one of the surgeons state,
Going into a field that s been operated on already six times, I know that the tissue is not going to

the surgeon does, the plastic surgery can heal wrong which can lead to major complications. Why
run the risk anyway when the

Jewish Mysticism
During the Middle ages, a period of time lasting from the 5th to the 15th century, arose a strong
figurehead and Jewish philosopher by the name Moshe ben Maimon. An expert on Jewish
scripture and Talmud, he took on writing detailed responses to questions raised by Jews on the
topics of Jewish Law and interpretations of the scriptures. Maimonides made it his purpose to make
God and the Jewish faith the basis of knowledge for his Jewish followers understanding and to
provide summaries and interpretations of Rabbinic text, scriptures and the Torah. Despite
Maimonides being an influential figure for Jewish theology, Jewish mysticism has taken a more
dramatic stance on the Torah and its teachings. Jewish mysticism holds strong in the attitude towards

Mirroring mysticism, Maimonides saw God as transcendent, being completely unique as He is
responsible for the existence of the world. Yet where Maimonides differs from mysticism is in his
belief that the only way to know God is to know God s actions, and the only way to know God s
actions is to study physics. The separation between the two theologies stems from metaphysics.
According to Maimonides thought, our religious commandment is to study physics. The purpose of
our existence is to perfect the image of God that we are created in, that is our rational soul, where
our rational soul is life. The merging of philosophy, theology and physics compelled Maimonides to
write the thirteen fundamental principles of the Jewish faith. In these fundamentals highlight the
existence of the Creator in his absolute and unparalleled perfection and eternity as well as how God
communicated to man through prophecy. Prophets were seen to possess intellectual perfection
where the sole difference between a philosopher and prophet was the language transmittable to the
commons. The intellectual difference allowed those fortunate enough to pursue further into the
understanding that the 611 commandments are a program that Moses created in order to create a

The primary reason for this test flight included conducting a 38 second burn to test the new
hybrid motor which used a nylon fuel grain and nitrous oxide to generate thrust, and a feathered

This callout was to alert the pilot of a transonic bobble would occur as the vehicle accelerated
through the transonic region and became supersonic. The next step was to unlock the feather by
moving the feather lock handle from the locked to unlocked position when SpaceShipTwo reached
a speed of Mach 1.4. (NTSB) The copilot did not heed the instructions of the pilot to unlock the
feather. The cockpit image recorder showed that 0.5 seconds after making the Mach 0.8 callout the
copilot started to unlock the feather at approximately Mach 0.82. Because of this premature
movement of the feather locking system, the large lifting force (keeping the feather extended)
generated by the tail, overpowered the resistance capability of the feather actuators (keeping the
feather retracted), essentially folding the fuselage over the tailboom. The pilot, age 43 held a flight
instructor certificate, commercial pilot certificate, with ratings for airplane single engine and
multiengine land, instrument airplane, and glider. He held FAA authorization to operate the
SpaceShipOne, SpaceShipTwo, Proteus and White Knight Two experimental aircraft as the pilot in

Oligopoly Market Structure
Oligopoly Oligopoly is a market structure in which the number of sellers is small. Oligopoly
requires strategic thinking, unlike perfect competition, monopoly, and monopolistic competition.
Under perfect competition, monopoly, and monopolistic competition, a seller faces a well defined
demand curve for its output, and should choose the quantity where MR=MC. The seller does not
worry about how other sellers will react, because either the seller is negligibly small, or already a
monopoly. Under oligopoly, a seller is big enough to affect the market. You must respond to your
rivals choices, but your rivals are responding to your choices.

Jack does not care that Jill s output is sold at a lower price.
The price effect is smaller for duopoly than monopoly, and the quantity effect favors more output
whenever price is above marginal cost. Therefore, the Nash equilibrium price will be closer to
marginal cost than the monopoly price. The more firms in the oligopoly, the smaller the price
effect will be, and the lower the Nash equilibrium price. When the number of firms approaches
infinity, the price effect approaches zero. Therefore, each seller will increase output whenever the
price is above marginal cost. In the limit, we have the perfectly competitive price, and the socially

heavily on technology was reoccurring. From automated book check outs to security tags, to
librarians running computerized queries to find a book s statistics: frequency of check out,

Positive Effects Of Underdevelopment In Africa
underdevelopment in Africa was made possible by positive feedback loops starting with the uneven
development in earlier centuries enforced by European constant exploitation of raw materials and
human labor from Africa. It traces the root of underdevelopment Africa back to the pre colonial
period. The natural path of development from communalism to feudalism and capitalism in Africa
was messed up by the European slave trade. The trade in slave was facilitated by African rulers
greed for luxury goods and European products. The effect of this trade was devastating in that it
caused considerable dislocation and disruption in the local economy, caused internal conflict as a
result of slave raiding and a huge loss of African labor. (Rodney ignored the Arab slave trade,
which caused an equivalent loss of human beings, but... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rodney puts together a biting criticism of Europe s interaction with Africa starting in the 15th
century with trading, both the slave trade and the trade in goods. This essentially killed inter Africa
trade, forcing African civilizations to only trade with European and other western economies. This
also changed the economies of African civilizations to suit what the traders wanted, whether human
beings, cotton, or minerals. When European powers grew as a result of the profits from trade, they
then carved Africa into its current state and entered the continent to force more and more
production of things that would increase profit for the western markets. Banks, industries, and
nations prospered by the use of underpaid, sometimes forced African labor. Meanwhile,
civilizations fell apart and education came to a stand still. This book left me further convinced in
the concept of reparations, not just for slavery, but for the destruction of an entire continent and all
the people that came from there in the last 500

Essay about The Liver and Its Functions
The Liver is the body s largest gland, weighing about three to four pounds. It is located beneath the
diaphragm in the right upper quadrant (RUQ) of the abdominal cavity. Without the liver, our
bodies would be poisoned and unfit for us to do anything at all. It is a metabolically active organ
responsible for many vital life functions. The primary functions of the liverare: Bile productions and
excretion. Excretion of bilirubin, cholesterol, hormones, and drugs. Metabolism of fats, proteins,
and carbohydrates. Enzyme activation. Storage of glycogen, vitamins, and minerals. Synthesis of
plasma proteins, such as albumin, and clotting factors. And blood detoxification and purification.
The liver is the body s energy factory.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bile moves into the gallbladder via tiny tubes. The bile is stored in the gallbladder and waits,
becoming concentrated, for the signal to be released into the duodenum aiding in digestion.
Without bile, the body could not digest fats, as fats do not absorb into water. The bile acts as a
detergent and allows the two to mix.
The liver is an unusual organ because nearly every one of its cells is exactly alike. The working
cells of the liver are known as hepatocytes. Hepatocytes have a unique capacity to reproduce in
response to liver injury. Liver regeneration can occur after surgical removal of a portion of the
liver (hepatectomy) or after injuries that destroy parts of the liver. And this regeneration can
adjust its size to match its host. Within a week after partial hepatectomy, hepatic mass is back
essentially to what it was prior to surgery. Even though the liver has the ability to react to
damage and can repair itself, repetitive insults can produce liver failure or deadly diseases,
infections, and disorders. A few such diseases are viral hepatitis, yellow fever, and rubella. Some
of the disease caused by bacteria are amebic dysentery, leptospirosis, and streptococcal infections.
These diseases can fatally damage the liver.
Liver failure is the acute failure of the liver to perform its body function. Proteins that allow the
blood to clot are not produced so the patient bruises and bleeds easily. A viscous fluid will
sometimes collect

A Lie And A False Statement Analysis
A Lie and a False Statement Thomas Jefferson once said, He who permits himself to tell a lie once,
finds it easier to do it a second time . Nobody is perfect, we have all told a lie but was it a lie or a
false statement? A lie is viewed as an unacceptable act while a false statement is viewed as the
person who stated it just doesn t have the knowledge to know if it s true or not. Kelly McEvers, a
NPR reporter, recently didn t use the word liein an article about Trump because she thought it
would put too much of her opinion in the article. Kelly was in the right when she didn t use the
word lie. In the first place, a lie is a poor act and has intent on hurting. A lie can be described as a
false statement made with deliberate intent to

Essay on Effects Of Overfishing Atlantic Cod on East Coast...
Overfishing is a global issue that has many negative effects on the environment (Fisheries and
Oceans Canada, 2009). Fish are a major resource that many people rely on for not only nutrition,
but also for a means of income (Fisheries and Oceans Canada, 2009). As the population of the
world increases, so does the demand for fish, which puts oceans under a lot of pressure (Fisheries
and Oceans Canada, 2009). Due to advanced fishing technologies and equipment, going out further
into the oceans and catching huge amounts of fish is easier than ever (Fisheries and Oceans
Canada, 2009). Froese (2004) defines overfishing as capturing the fish before they reach their full
growth potential and diminishing their chance of reproduction. In other... Show more content on

The snow crab population is also increasing (Frank et al., 2005; Scheffer et al., 2005). This
increase has led to the decrease in the large bodied zooplankton species ( 2 mm) because this is
what the shrimp and crab populations prefer to feed off of (Frank et al., 2005; Scheffer et al.,
2005). Now that the zooplankton abundance isn t as high, the phytoplankton population has
increased, which is due to the reduced pressure being put on them by the zooplankton (Frank et
al., 2005; Scheffer et al., 2005). Lastly, the concentration of nitrate is lower, which suggests the
phytoplankton populations are depleting it more strongly (Frank et al., 2005; Scheffer et al.,
2005). These changes in the ecosystem can be quite harmful and can lead to breakouts of
disease in the lower trophic levels because the populations become so dense that they are more
prone to catching a disease (Jackson et al., 2001). As one can see, overfishing is a serious issue
with serious consequences. Froese (2004) suggests three ways to deal with overfishing: Let them
spawn! , Let them grow! , and Let the mega spawners live! . The first idea suggests that the fish
be allowed to spawn at least once before they are caught. This will allow the population to rebuild
and remain healthy (Froese, 2004). The second idea suggests that the fish be allowed to grow to

Sand Castles
Sand Castles For our final discussion, I choose Sand Castles, written by Joseph Szewczyk
(author of the textbook modules we ve read this semester) and Jackie Schill. Eleven illustrations
make up the work. Aside from a few words hidden in the imagery s background, the only formal
text is in the last panel, referring to Michelle Wright who died in 2001, just shy of her 31st
birthday. I spent time searching online obituaries trying to discover more about this young woman,
but was not able to find any information about her. She must have had some connection to
Szewczyk and/or Schill. This is a sad, forlorn piece that required looking carefully at each image
for clues. At first glance, the cover illustration appears to be a woman applying makeup.... Show

In the first panel, she is blind, making her way down the street with a cane. Behind her is a
crumbled wall with graffiti on it saying, The war is over . To me, this represents the loss of a
struggle, a foretelling of Michelle s demise. Perhaps going blind was the final stage of her
illness. The remaining images are Michelle s memories as a child, as a dancer, and her lifelong
struggle with self image. In one panel, she s watching her mother use makeup, in another, her
mother is angry seeing Michelle play with makeup. One panel shows an anorexic teenager,
hidden in the background are the words Perfection and So thin I c[ould] disappear . Next to this
image sits a bald, depressed figure, no doubt a result of the cancer/chemotherapy drugs shown in
the foreground. These are all clues, leading up to the final image in the mortuary where Michelle
appears with beautiful flowing hair and a serene expression. I m not sure what the story s
overarching message is. It might be that in the end, she achieved the beauty she always sought, or
perhaps the story speaks to the broader issue of the sexualization of women. Looking back on her
life, Michelle s strongest memories are of how she looked, not what she had accomplished. The
story left me feeling

The Caribbean History
Derek Walcott and Jean Rhys both have texts that use the fragments of the Caribbean history to
create their texts. Walcott has mentioned in many essays and interviews how important it is for the
artist to not become disillusioned and bitter about history. Rather, artists should make use of these
fragments of European, African, and native Arawak/Amerindian, to reinvent and create a voice that
entails all of those influences.
Walcott redefines and reinvents the literary epic in Omeros and Rhys challenges the ignored
narrative of Bertha/Antoinette in Wide Sargasso Sea. In Omeros, I propose on demonstrating how
Walcott uses Helen as a symbol of the St. Lucia and how her struggle represents the struggle of the
island. I will investigate the images of the victimized Helen of Troy in contrast with this Antillean
Helen who, rather than a victim, is the seducer of the men, and resists the domination of the men
and the effects of colonialism. This gives Helen a tremendous amount of power. She represents the
beauty and desire through which the men of St. Lucia define themselves. I will zoom in on how
Walcott uses Helen through her resistance of the influences of New World and the tourism to show
how the natives still try to hold on to their traditions and strive to create their own identities in an
environment that is constantly causing the natives to reinvent themselves to suit the colonizers and
tourists. Walcott uses Ma Kilman as the mother healer who heals the wounds of

Usability And Technical Communication And Usability
In today s world, designing a website has become a piece of cake. With powerful designing tools
that are available online, anyone can design quality websites in a much shorter amount of time. But
the question to be asked is, How would a website designer know that his/her website would be user
friendly? Usabilitytesting is the answer. By definition, usability testing is the evaluation of a
product or service by testing it on the user. Since the product is for the user, it is necessary that
users are involved during the process of creating a product or service. Today, usability testing is not
only limited to the field of information technology, but plays a major role in technical
communication. In this report, I will talk about usability... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The central principle of technical communication has always been user focus. Technical
communicators are usually comfortable dealing with users from both technical and non technical
backgrounds, since they gather information from the technical to communicate with the non
technical. Technical communicators possess good analytical skills and tend to be familiar with
certain standards that involve interface design principles and style guides (Gaffney 2004).
Therefore, they possess skills that are required by usability professionals.
Today, technical communicators are not only writers of user assistance and related documents, but
they also work as website designers, information architects, content specialists and marketing
communication specialists, to name a few of the sub fields within the field of technical
communication.
USABILITY TECHNIQUES IN TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION
Technical communicators can incorporate certain usability techniques that help them to ensure a
great user experience. These basic usability techniques are as follows:
Perform usability test on the user documents:
Technical communicators mostly work offshore, and due to the lengthiness of the user guide,
testing the entire document is not feasible most of the time. Therefore, technical communicators
can choose some complicated procedures that are important from a user s perspective, and perform
usability test on these procedures either remotely or one on one with the actual users.

Fermentation Lab Report
Fermentation is the anaerobic process by which glucose, or other sugars are catabolized by
microorganisms without an electron transport chain, like yeast (Campbell, 2004). In experiment
one the yeast and glucose acted as reactants, with the yeast breaking down the glucose, producing
the products CO2 and ethanol. The overall reaction for the alcoholic fermentation that took place
can be represented as 2 pyruvate + 2NADH 2NAD+ +2CO2 + 2 ethanol (Campbell, 2004). This
biological process allows cells to operate under conditions where oxygen is not present. Experiment
1 explored the question of how the amount of sugar impacts the rate of fermentation, while
Experiment 2 tested the effect the type of sugar available to the yeasthas on the rate of
fermentation. If more sugar is available to the yeast, the faster the reaction should occur. If sucrose
is used instead of glucose, the reaction will produce less CO2 since the yeast cannot breakdown
sucrose as efficiently as glucose.
Methods:
The procedure for experiment one followed that given in: Martineau, Dean, Gilliland, Soderstrom.

Experiment one tested the effect the amount of sugar has on the fermentation rate. Four labeled 50
milliliter (mL) test tubes were used to transport each reaction to the designated fermentation tube.

1967 Six Day War
Assess the consequences of the 1967 (Six Day) War for Arab Israeli relations
On the 23rd May 1967, the Israelis declared war on the Arabs due to the blocking of the straits to
Israeli shipping. The 1967 Six Day War had a major impact on Arab Israeli relations. This is due
to Israel gaining control over the occupied territories, large increases of Jewish settlement in the
occupied territories, the increase of Israeli military in the Middle East.
The Israeli occupation of Arab territories had a large impact on Arab Israeli relations. Through the
dominancy of the Israeli army during the Six Day War, they were able to capture the Sinai
Peninsula, the Gaza Strip from Egypt, East Jerusalem, the West Bank from Jordon and the Golan
Heights from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Historian Avner Cohen writes, In the end Israellaunched a pre emptive aerial attack in which most
of the Egyptian air force was destroyed, virtually deciding the Six Day War. Through Israel s
dominance they were regarded as the strongest military power in the Middle East . Also, the
Arabs had become severely weakened as a result of the Six Day War, as they had lost a high
amount of casualties and the relations between Syria, Jordon and Egypt declined as evident
through Syria not accepting UN Resolution 242 while Egypt and Jordon did. Through Israel s
superiority, their relations with Egypt had improved as highlighted through Egypt recognising
Israel as a state in 1979. Nevertheless, Israel s dominancy also stresses its improvement in its
relations with Jordan signing a peace treaty in 1994, and Iran signing a peace treaty in 1979. Even
though, certain relations improved the Arabs would turn to terrorism and the Israeli army would be
seen as the aggressor. By Israel dominating the Six Day War and establishing itself as the strongest
military power in the Middle East, its relations with other Arab countries had dramatically
improved.
In conclusion, the 1967 Six Day War had a major impact on Arab Israeli relations. Due to Israel
gaining control over the occupied territories and increasing its settlement, the Arab Israeli relations
had declined as the Arabs were livid that Israel would not

Although broadcasting is still an important source of media consumption in Chile, new technologies

My Favorite Time Of Year
I see the turning of a leaf dancing in an autumn sun, and brilliant shades of crimson glowing
when a day is done . This quote by Hazelmarie Mattie Elliott describes what I see in a day of fall.
The colorful leaves in the crisp cold air where the sun shines. My favorite time of year is Fall
because of all the Pumpkins, and celebrating Halloween and I get to celebrate thanksgiving.
The first reason why I like Fall so much is because of all the dazzling pumpkins. My favorite thing
about pumpkins is Going to the pumpkin patch and picking out the perfect pumpkin. For me the
perfect pumpkin would have a bold orange color, and it would be immense, with a perfect slender
look. Me and my family have been going to a pumpkin patch every year since I was about 2 years
old. During our time at the pumpkin patch my brothers and I always have a contest to see who
can find the biggest pumpkin in the field, nevertheless this time I won, the pumpkin I found
weighed 15 pounds and was really fat with a nice sheer matte orange color. When I saw this
pumpkin, it was like a glowing spot light had appeared right over the pumpkin. Something very
unusual my brother Alex had found in the pumpkin patch was a s medium sized pumpkin that
was kind of shaped like a peanut, he had most definitely won the award for most weird pumpkin.
Once we all came home with our pumpkins, we started to carve our glorious pumpkins because we
are so excited to see how they would turn out. In like manner the design s that I

  • 2. Cell Organelles And Structures tion of Cell Organelles Cells are surrounded with a boundary known as the cell surface membrane and as well as holding the cell together, being semi permeable, it controls the movement of materials across it. Within the cell are a number of structures each which have specific functions. These structures are known as organelles. The cell surface membrane and the membranes of any of the membrane bound organelles described below are made of the same material, a double layer of phospholipid molecules. Within the cell surface membrane, the intracellular space known as the cytoplasm, contains all the organelles and a fluid known as cytosol. Within the cytosol is a network of microtubules and fibres called the cytoskeleton. This cytoskeleton s main functions are to give support to the cell helping to maintain its shape and aid the movement of organelles. Most cell organelles and structures are common to both animal and plant cells but there are some differences as outlined in the table below and as seen in fig. 1 and fig. 2. • 3. Martin Luther King, The Southern Christian Leadership... Under the leadership of Martin Luther King, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), bought the Black Civil Rights Movement and his desegregation concepts to Birmingham in 1963 for several reasons. The most pivotal of these reasons being his African American racial status and his Christian faith which drove him to fight for the rights his people deserved. He believed that the most racial injustice lay not only in the Southern states of America but in Birmingham, Alabama as expressed in his 1963 Letter from a Birmingham Jail, to fellow clergymen who criticized his methods, King stating, I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. In Birmingham, much like other Southern American States public facilities such as parks, movie theatres, lunch bars, restaurants, and water fountains were segregated (African Americans had different, lesser facilities than the Whites) which ultimately led King, SCLC, and ordinary African American citizens to hold these non violent protests to have the desegregation they had sought after for many years. His second reason to bring the Black Civil Rights Movement to Birmingham was due to their Commissioner of Public Safety, Eugene Bull Connor. Connor was greatly opposed to the idea of segregation and King knew Connor s reaction to the non violent movement he had proposed would be one of violence and aggression. The town also had a history of extreme violence, not only towards African Americans but nigger lovers alike. Examples ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. What Is The Most Important Result Of The Columbian Exchange Issue Paper 2 Tino LoGerfo History 105 What many people only know about Christopher Columbus s expedition is that he found the Americas. While this is true, he did find a completely new frontier that was unknown to the Old World, his findings re shaped global consumption patterns from the seventeenth century. He found a New World filled with resources that the old world hasn t seen before. When he found the new world he brought with him European plants and animal species that were foreign to the citizens of the New World. The Columbian Exchangeintroduced many foods that are still essential to consumption in today s world along with the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. The potato is a prime example of how the Columbian Exchange changed global consumption patterns because it was nutritious and had an abundant amount of calories in it and caused a mass population increase in areas where the potato was available. The use of slaves also increased exponentially when sugar cane was introduced. This was a very cheap, productive way to produce a large amount of sugar and it was used by many Old World countries. The findings of these new world products created a rise in global consumption and production because products were introduced to the both the New World and the Old World and there instantly became a large spike in the availability of products. Along with this, the old world decided to go out and get themselves involved in the New World because they saw an opportunity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Essay on Horror Theories in Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 Horror movies are based on humanity s disturbing, inner thoughts that are kept hidden by sophisticated and civilized facades. The fact that people pay money to go watch their own race be slaughtered shows that civilization has two sides. There are many theories as to why humans act the way they do, such as Steven King s beast within and potential lyncher theories and Stanley Solomon s exploration and romantic isolationism theories. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 does a fantastic job of displaying these theories about the horror genre if one knows what they are looking for. He also believed that since everybody is insane, insanity comes down to how insane someone is (785). King s potential lyncher theory correlates with the beast within theory. This theory simply explains that everyone has the potential to a masked murderer if they don t keep their dark sides tamed (785). Stanley Solomon s exploration theory is a very well known theory in the horror genre. The theory is the reasoning behind why characters in horror movies always act so irrationally and brainless. Why is it that the defenseless girl always puts herself in a dangerous state by exploring? Sometimes it is ironic that the victim is lurking around in a dangerous place because they have yet to be informed that a monster is in their presence (795). Other times though, the victim explores even though they know they are putting themselves in danger (795). As one watches these movies, they typically pity the character. The fact that the viewer sympathizes the victim for acting so absurd tells humans something about themselves. They want to explore as well (795). As audiences watch, they want to cover their eyes in fear, but force themselves to watch the film anyways. Solomon predicts in his theory that humans do this because the ultimate irrationality of this typical moment of horror in the nightmare film represents our own subconscious desire to confront our inevitable dread: to meet death before we really ... His daughter Hippodameia had married Pelops, and it has been said that the first games were held in their honor around 1000 B.C. Through the years the games began to attract interest in nearby towns. In 776 B.C. , the leader of the Eleians, Iphitos, rededicated the games to the honor of Zeus, (the most important god in the ancient Greek pantheon). The pentathlon was said to be invented by Jason, who combined the five events and awarded the first prize to a friend, Peleus, who placed second in everything except for wrestling, which he placed first. The pentathlon was a combination of light events: jumping, running, javelin and heavy events: discus and wrestling. While it remains unknown how the decision of the winner was made, it is believed that the last two winners confronted each other in wrestling, with the winner declared pentathlon victor. Speed, strength, skill, and endurance are all qualities necessary to participate in the pentathlon. A quote from Aristotle, The pentathletes are the best, because they are naturally endowed with both strength and speed (Foundation of the Hellenic World [FHW], 1). Boxing, added in 688 B.C., was first mentioned in Homeric poems, and was held in honor of Patroclus. It is said that Apollo, who defeated and killed Phorbus, was the inventor of the boxing event. The ancient boxing differed in many ways from the modern boxing that we are used to. While having no time limit to the fight, opponents fought until one raised his hand in defeat, or fell knocked out or dead. An effective tactic of ancient boxing was positioning your opponent to face the sun, blinding him with the glare. However, I felt this was a good point to mention, since making assumptions about people should have no part in the classroom. I was also surprised that the author seemed upset that students presumed her to be a nice person when she had clearly stated she was not a nice teacher on the syllabus. Hoping your professor is nice and understanding is not stereotyping; it is students expecting collegeto be like high school. The reactions to the death of a close relative may differ from person to person depending on various factors such as the relationship that the two people shared or the prior experiences each person has had with the deaths of loved ones some may simply be used to it or on the other hand be completely naГЇve, which would be a hard blow. It also differs with the age of the person experiencing it because a small child for instance would not be old enough to completely grasp the concept of death. At this part of the poem, readers may feel relief, but Heaney does an impressionable job playing with the readers emotions with lines in which he writes that the corpse was stanched and bandaged by the nurses and in a state where he suffered critical injuries and was treated at the hospital. It is easily inferable that Heaney made the decision to include all these misleading clues to also portray his own confusion with what was happening at the time; these clues give the reader the same kind of confusion with the general atmosphere and subject of death. It is easy to see how U.S. Border Patrol agents and Mr. Buchanan can support the United States efforts in securing the U.S. Mexico border. Not all of Mr. Buchanan s views are based on histories of violence from Mexican illegal aliens. As recent as the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, U.S. citizens have realized we are vulnerable to attacks within the United States. This realization is a valid concern because terrorists could also gain access through this border. The U.S. Border Patrol has a term called other than Mexican (OTM). • 20. The Drug Development And Approval Process As mentioned in class, as well as in the Krishna (2008) article, the drug development and approval process is an extensive and costly endeavor. The goal of experimental medicine is to increase the efficiency of drug development by providing a better understanding of the drug s mechanism(s) of action, dose response, efficacy, and safety, allowing the process to be accelerated for the most promising and efficacious candidates (Krishna, Herman, Wagner, 2008). Preclinical testing begins with identifying the ideal drug target. The target should be disease modifying and/or have a proven function in the pathophysiology of the disease. Target expression should not be uniformly distributed throughout the body. There should also be a favorable IP condition allowing the drug freedom to operate without competition. If the druggability is not obvious, a 3D structure for the target protein or a close homologue should be available for assessment. The target should also have favorable assayability enabling high throughput screening. To identify these targets there are many strategies that can be utilized such as: genomic analysis (phenotype analysis, genetic association, gene expression profiling, etc.), pathway analysis, and activity based proteomic profiling (Frank Hargreaves, 2003; Lipsky Sharp, 2001; Krishna, Herman, Wagner, 2008). (Smith, 29,29) This picture is clearly painted in the mind of the reader, further interpretation leads us to believe that Tracy K. Smith is trying to find direction in life and into how she wants to both act and be perceived, as but her path is unclear, just as the fog makes our road hazy. The use of imagery is also beneficial as it gives the reader insight into what Tracy K. Smith thought about her identity at different points in her life, such an instance is given in her childhood, What did it mean to smooth across the casket of your belly? What echoed there, if not me . (Smith, 6,7) This shows that Tracy had thought about her identity in the past, and wondered what it was. It gives the readers a sense of not knowing themselves, this would push anyone into a search or rethinking an identity, the same goes for Tracy. Rachel Joyce strategically uses imagery, He wanted to describe what it feels like to find your boy in a pool of vomit and carry him to bed and mop him up and pretend in the morning you have not seen that. He wanted to say what it was like to be a child and find the man who was your father in the same manner. He wanted to say, What happened? Was it me? Am I the link here? But he didn t. (Joyce, 256) Through Harold s accounts, it becomes undeniable that his son had put him in a frictional position, mentally challenging Harold, and putting the blame on him. The pilot Peter Siebold managed to survive however the co pilot Michael Alsbury died. The primary reason for this test flight included conducting a 38 second burn to test the new hybrid motor which used a nylon fuel grain and nitrous oxide to generate thrust, and a feathered reentry that was to be at a speed of Mach 1.2 (NTSB) The mission for SpaceShipTwo consisted of an air drop from approximately 50,000ft from White ... The next step was to unlock the feather by moving the feather lock handle from the locked to unlocked position when SpaceShipTwo reached a speed of Mach 1.4. (NTSB) The copilot did not heed the instructions of the pilot to unlock the feather. The cockpit image recorder showed that 0.5 seconds after making the Mach 0.8 callout the copilot started to unlock the feather at approximately Mach 0.82. Because of this premature movement of the feather locking system, the large lifting force (keeping the feather extended) generated by the tail, overpowered the resistance capability of the feather actuators (keeping the feather retracted), essentially folding the fuselage over the tailboom. The pilot, age 43 held a flight instructor certificate, commercial pilot certificate, with ratings for airplane single engine and multiengine land, instrument airplane, and glider. He held FAA authorization to operate the SpaceShipOne, SpaceShipTwo, Proteus and White Knight Two experimental aircraft as the pilot in command. The book was about a thirteen year old boy named Brian Robeson who was stranded in a plane crash. He was out in the Canadian wilderness trying to visit his dad. Brian is left with nothing but his clothing a tattered windbreaker, and the hatchet his mother had given him as a present. First as Brian and the pilot were flying to Brian father?s house the pilot was showing Brian how to fly the plane. ? Brian also eventually found out how to make a fire created by sparks from his hatchet and a rock striking together. Brian lived for nearly two months in the woods all alone. Each day that Brian lived he discovered or learned something new. He was living pretty well when he ran into a couple of unexplainable disasters. Oligopoly requires strategic thinking, unlike perfect competition, monopoly, and monopolistic competition. Under perfect competition, monopoly, and monopolistic competition, a seller faces a well defined demand curve for its output, and should choose the quantity where MR=MC. The seller does not worry about how other sellers will react, because either the seller is negligibly small, or already a monopoly. Under oligopoly, a seller is big enough to affect the market. Positive Effects Of Underdevelopment In Africa underdevelopment in Africa was made possible by positive feedback loops starting with the uneven development in earlier centuries enforced by European constant exploitation of raw materials and human labor from Africa. It traces the root of underdevelopment Africa back to the pre colonial period. The natural path of development from communalism to feudalism and capitalism in Africa was messed up by the European slave trade. The trade in slave was facilitated by African rulers greed for luxury goods and European products. The effect of this trade was devastating in that it caused considerable dislocation and disruption in the local economy, caused internal conflict as a result of slave raiding and a huge loss of African labor. This also changed the economies of African civilizations to suit what the traders wanted, whether human beings, cotton, or minerals. When European powers grew as a result of the profits from trade, they then carved Africa into its current state and entered the continent to force more and more production of things that would increase profit for the western markets. Banks, industries, and nations prospered by the use of underpaid, sometimes forced African labor. Meanwhile, civilizations fell apart and education came to a stand still. It is located beneath the diaphragm in the right upper quadrant (RUQ) of the abdominal cavity. Without the liver, our bodies would be poisoned and unfit for us to do anything at all. It is a metabolically active organ responsible for many vital life functions. The primary functions of the liverare: Bile productions and excretion. Excretion of bilirubin, cholesterol, hormones, and drugs. Metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Enzyme activation. Storage of glycogen, vitamins, and minerals. Synthesis of plasma proteins, such as albumin, and clotting factors. And blood detoxification and purification. The liver is the body s energy factory.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The bile moves into the gallbladder via tiny tubes. The bile is stored in the gallbladder and waits, becoming concentrated, for the signal to be released into the duodenum aiding in digestion. Without bile, the body could not digest fats, as fats do not absorb into water. The bile acts as a detergent and allows the two to mix. The liver is an unusual organ because nearly every one of its cells is exactly alike. The working cells of the liver are known as hepatocytes. Hepatocytes have a unique capacity to reproduce in response to liver injury. Liver regeneration can occur after surgical removal of a portion of the liver (hepatectomy) or after injuries that destroy parts of the liver. And this regeneration can adjust its size to match its host. Within a week after partial hepatectomy, hepatic mass is back essentially to what it was prior to surgery. Even though the liver has the ability to react to damage and can repair itself, repetitive insults can produce liver failure or deadly diseases, infections, and disorders. A few such diseases are viral hepatitis, yellow fever, and rubella. Some of the disease caused by bacteria are amebic dysentery, leptospirosis, and streptococcal infections. Fish are a major resource that many people rely on for not only nutrition, but also for a means of income (Fisheries and Oceans Canada, 2009). As the population of the world increases, so does the demand for fish, which puts oceans under a lot of pressure (Fisheries and Oceans Canada, 2009). Due to advanced fishing technologies and equipment, going out further into the oceans and catching huge amounts of fish is easier than ever (Fisheries and Oceans Canada, 2009). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The snow crab population is also increasing (Frank et al., 2005; Scheffer et al., 2005). This increase has led to the decrease in the large bodied zooplankton species ( 2 mm) because this is what the shrimp and crab populations prefer to feed off of (Frank et al., 2005; Scheffer et al., 2005). Now that the zooplankton abundance isn t as high, the phytoplankton population has increased, which is due to the reduced pressure being put on them by the zooplankton (Frank et al., 2005; Scheffer et al., 2005). Lastly, the concentration of nitrate is lower, which suggests the phytoplankton populations are depleting it more strongly (Frank et al., 2005; Scheffer et al., 2005). These changes in the ecosystem can be quite harmful and can lead to breakouts of disease in the lower trophic levels because the populations become so dense that they are more prone to catching a disease (Jackson et al., 2001). As one can see, overfishing is a serious issue with serious consequences. Froese (2004) suggests three ways to deal with overfishing: Let them spawn! , Let them grow! , and Let the mega spawners live! . The first idea suggests that the fish be allowed to spawn at least once before they are caught. This will allow the population to rebuild and remain healthy (Froese, 2004). • 45. The Caribbean History Derek Walcott and Jean Rhys both have texts that use the fragments of the Caribbean history to create their texts. Walcott has mentioned in many essays and interviews how important it is for the artist to not become disillusioned and bitter about history. Rather, artists should make use of these fragments of European, African, and native Arawak/Amerindian, to reinvent and create a voice that entails all of those influences. Walcott redefines and reinvents the literary epic in Omeros and Rhys challenges the ignored narrative of Bertha/Antoinette in Wide Sargasso Sea. In Omeros, I propose on demonstrating how Walcott uses Helen as a symbol of the St. Lucia and how her struggle represents the struggle of the island. I will investigate the images of the victimized Helen of Troy in contrast with this Antillean Helen who, rather than a victim, is the seducer of the men, and resists the domination of the men and the effects of colonialism. This gives Helen a tremendous amount of power. She represents the beauty and desire through which the men of St. Lucia define themselves. I will zoom in on how Walcott uses Helen through her resistance of the influences of New World and the tourism to show how the natives still try to hold on to their traditions and strive to create their own identities in an environment that is constantly causing the natives to reinvent themselves to suit the colonizers and tourists. With powerful designing tools that are available online, anyone can design quality websites in a much shorter amount of time. But the question to be asked is, How would a website designer know that his/her website would be user friendly? Usabilitytesting is the answer. By definition, usability testing is the evaluation of a product or service by testing it on the user. Since the product is for the user, it is necessary that users are involved during the process of creating a product or service. Today, usability testing is not only limited to the field of information technology, but plays a major role in technical communication. In this report, I will talk about usability... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The central principle of technical communication has always been user focus. Technical communicators are usually comfortable dealing with users from both technical and non technical backgrounds, since they gather information from the technical to communicate with the non technical. Technical communicators possess good analytical skills and tend to be familiar with certain standards that involve interface design principles and style guides (Gaffney 2004). Therefore, they possess skills that are required by usability professionals. Today, technical communicators are not only writers of user assistance and related documents, but they also work as website designers, information architects, content specialists and marketing communication specialists, to name a few of the sub fields within the field of technical communication. USABILITY TECHNIQUES IN TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION Technical communicators can incorporate certain usability techniques that help them to ensure a great user experience. These basic usability techniques are as follows: Perform usability test on the user documents: Technical communicators mostly work offshore, and due to the lengthiness of the user guide, testing the entire document is not feasible most of the time. Fermentation Lab Report Fermentation is the anaerobic process by which glucose, or other sugars are catabolized by microorganisms without an electron transport chain, like yeast (Campbell, 2004). In experiment one the yeast and glucose acted as reactants, with the yeast breaking down the glucose, producing the products CO2 and ethanol. The overall reaction for the alcoholic fermentation that took place can be represented as 2 pyruvate + 2NADH 2NAD+ +2CO2 + 2 ethanol (Campbell, 2004). This biological process allows cells to operate under conditions where oxygen is not present. Experiment 1 explored the question of how the amount of sugar impacts the rate of fermentation, while Experiment 2 tested the effect the type of sugar available to the yeasthas on the rate of fermentation. If more sugar is available to the yeast, the faster the reaction should occur. If sucrose is used instead of glucose, the reaction will produce less CO2 since the yeast cannot breakdown sucrose as efficiently as glucose.
