Genre, Character, and Symbolism Analysis on The Black Cat
Edgar Allen Poe was one of the most influential and important writers of the nineteenth century. He
was the first writer to try to make a living only writing. One of Poe s most popular short stories,
The Black Cat , is considered horror fiction or gothic fiction which Poe is known for in his books
and short stories because it was a popular genre during his days. In Poe s short story, The Black Cat
, Poe uses a horror fiction genre, a mentally deranged and evil narrator/character, and symbolism of
death to make a thrilling story with tons of suspense, drama, and gruesome detail.
Poe gives many gruesome and frightening details that make The Black Cat a horror fiction short
story. Horror fiction is a genre of fiction designed to startle, frighten, or disgust the reader by
inducing feelings of horror. Poe inducing feelings of horror through things that take place in the
story such as the stabbing of Pluto, the first cat. When Poe wrote, I took from my waistcoat
pocket a penknife, opened it, grasped the poor beast by the throat, and deliberately cut one of the
eyes from the socket! (Poe 436), he gives the reader a startled and disgusting feeling due to the
gruesome depth of the sentence. Poe darkens the story even more with the hanging of Pluto and
his wife s murder. Poe writes about his wife s murder and he gives evil details on the ideas of
burying her in his

Comparing Mccandless, Emerson, And Henry David Thoreau
Self reliance is the freedom of being independent. One only relies on oneself and doesn t look for
help or for anyone to save them. One is perfectly content with being solely reliant. Three people
who believed greatly in self reliance were Chris McCandless, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry
David Thoreau. They had many different beliefs and along with acting out in civil disobedience,
acting in nonconformity, thinking nature was most important, and being a transcendentalist, they
was also self reliant. McCandless, Emerson, and Thoreau were all people who believed strongly
in self reliance. One belief all three writers had is self reliance. In the nonfiction book Into the Wild
by Jon Krakauer, the author talks about how McCandless was very independent

The Cleveland Way Analysis
The opening section of the Cleveland Way begins with a leisurely stroll along the beautiful wooded
valley of the river Rye, climbing gradually to the limestone plateau of the Hambleton Hills. Pausing
at one of Yorkshire s most famous attractions the White Horse of Kilburn.
Assuming that the riches of Helmsley have already been explored, we begin our journey of
discovery from the market square. There are some superb views of Helmsley Castle as we leave
the village. The Cleveland Way meanders through the woodland to Rievaulx Bridge where a short
detour to Rievaulx Abbey is worthwhile.
The Abbey, founded in 1132, was the first Cistercian abbey in the North of England. Rievaulx s
foundation, initiated by St Bernard of Clairvaux, was part of an ambitious plan for the monastic
colonisation of Northern England and Scotland. Rievaulx soon became one of the most powerful
monasteries in England, a place for meditВation, learning and culture. The Abbey began to establish
colonies in 1136. The most important of these was Melrose Abbey, Scotland s first Cistercian
monastery, endowed by King David.
Walter l Espec, the great Norman lord of Helmsley, provided most of the abbey s land. In addition,
he granted to William, the first abbot, and his twelve monks, the present site on the banks of ...

Competitive Advantages Of A Competitive Company
Competitive advantages must identifying a specific target audience with a clearly need,
developing and delivering a high quality of products and services in appropriately priced to be the
best than anybody else. But what are the elements of a competitive company? Here are some factors
that helps the organization to become a competitor in market.
1. Cost leadership:
It is a business strategy that allows a company to lowest cost production in an industry. There are
two options in businesses to improve profits, increasing or decreasing costs. This strategy focuses
on acquiring a highest raw materials at lowest price then change them into valuable consumer
goods. Low cost leadership often leads to increases in market share.

This is the key to achieving competitive advantage for your business.
6. Encourage workers to talk with their leader:
Especially about their problems. Employees feel safe when they speak or ask for a help from their
leader rather than to feel fearful, this will leads to better performance outcomes. Feeling safe in the
workplace supports the spirit of experimentation for new innovations. Kamal (2015) shown that
empowerment, when coupled with good training and teamwork, leads to superior performance
outcomes whereas a range of efficient manufacturing and operations practices do not . (Kamal,
2015)
A positive workplace is the best successful place over the time because its well being and
increases positive emotions. In turn, it amplifies people s ability and creativity and improve their
relationship with other co workers. Also it improving employee s ability to attack challenges and
difficulties while boosting their health. This make the employees more loyal to the organizations
and the leader as well as bringing out their best strengths.
According to Lewin s (1958) theory there are three clearest and simplest steps models about change
management. First step is unfreeze people always need to understand why things should done in
another ways. The process of unfreezing is sensitive culture, which means explaining why the

Explain Two Ways To Classify The Structural And Functional...
There are two ways to classify the nervous system: structural and functional classifications.
Structural classification includes all the organs of the nervous system. There are two groups that
forms nervous system: central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). CNS
covers the brain and spinal cordof the human body. It unites and gives orders to the nervous system.
It translates incoming sensory information and gives directions based on past experiences and the
current environment. PNS covers parts of the nervous system outside the CNS. It includes the
cranial and spinal nerves which extends from the brainand spinal cord of the human body. Spinal

Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, And Mesopotamia
In ancient Egypt, Rome and Mesopotamia the connections that the people had with their rulers
stemmed from their belief that their ruler had a close connection with their God s. Because of the
vast role that religion played in their lives it was important to show their admiration and
appreciation for these royal beings. From a psychological standpoint, through their style,
significance, and idealization, Mesopotamia, Egypt and Rome s depictions of royalty within their
artworks functioned as the best way to encompass the impression, and supremacy that a ruler held
over their people.
For many of the people of Mesopotamia the most important part of their society was their
religion and their royalty. They believed that they held close relationships with their Gods and
they believed that their rulers were the closest possible connection that they had to their Gods.
An ancient Sumerian proverb states Man is the shadow of God, but the king is God s reflection
(Alexander). The king was believed to be personally chosen by the gods and acting in their will
however they were not considered to be god like.
The king s responsibilities included participating in religious rituals, managing the state during
peace and war time, and creating laws. The Mesopotamians believed that in order to protect
themselves they needed to gain more resources and people and this was done by expanding and
conquering surrounding areas. Another role of the king was to issue codes of law with the ideal

I Have A Knife At Your Neck By Don t Make A Sound
I have a knife to your neck. Don t make a sound. Get out of bed and come with me. These are the
words that Elizabeth Smart heard as she was awoken on June 5, 2002. (Moses, 2010). At only
14 years old, Smart was taken from her home, located in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was not found
until nine months had passed. Brian David Mitchell broke into the Smart s home and grabbed
the youngster from her room that she shared with her sister Mary Katherine. What Mitchell did
not know was that Mary Katherine was awake and saw the whole ordeal. The youngest daughter
waited until she knew it was safe to depart her bed and raced to her parent s bedroom. She s gone.

Rewind to around 2 days before her kidnapping, Smart was in her class at church. Her Sunday
school teacher had preached a few things that she took to heart. If you will pray to do what God
wants you to do, He will change your life, he said. I pressed my dress again, my head down. I
was listening carefully to him now. I don t know what it was, but there was something in the
way he said it, the intensity of his voice, that made me realize that what he was saying was
important. That day after church, Elizabeth went into her closet to escape the loudness of her
siblings and prayed. God, I m here, I said. I m only fourteen. I know I m just a little girl. But I ll
do whatever it is that you want me to do. I really do want to serve you. But I m not sure that I
know how. Elizabeth does not think what transpired was something that God expected. He
without a doubt would not have wished the anguish and torment that she was going to
experience upon anybody, particularly upon a young girl. But since that time, I have learned an
important lesson. Yes, God can make some good come from evil. But even He, in all His
majesty, won t make the evil go away. Men are free. He won t control them. There is wickedness
in this world. Which left me with this: When faced with pain and evil, we have to make a choice.
We can choose to be taken by the evil. Or we can try to embrace the good. (Smart, 2013).
Elizabeth woke up with her younger sister in a slumber adjacent to her,

but as a project manager for Pizza Delivery Quickly, your main concern is about monitoring the
established metrics that can alert a project is heading for distress. The project manager must be
able to analyze the situation, revise the goals, evaluate the different options and be able to revise

parts of the project are lagging behind and not keeping up with the metrics. The Pizza Delivery
Quickly case study can benefit from an evaluation of the entire structural system of the project and
its team in order to perform effectively. This is a key aspect, especially if the six subsystems are

Vaccinations In The Twentieth Century
When one is given a vaccine, the body s immune system fights the disease or virus causing the
body to become immune to the disease. Before vaccines, the only way to become immune to a
disease was too simply contract the disease and hopefully live with no serious side effects or
passing on the potentially deadly illness or dangers in a wide spread epidemic. Vaccinations have
been saving lives for over 200 years now. Below is a chart showing the successful impact
vaccinations have had in the United States. Looking at this chart, the impact of vaccines in the
Twentieth century have almost completely eradicated diseases like measles, diphtheria, and small
pox. According to the CDC, vaccinations have prevented more than 21 million hospitalizations and
732,000 deaths among children born in the last 20 years. Vaccines have the ability to provide
artificially acquired immunity and are easier plus a less risky way to become immune to disease

This walk explores the beautiful countryside to the north east of Sheriff Hutton, visiting the
hamlet of High Stittenham and the secluded valley of Mowthorpe Dale. The extensive views
stretch across the Vale of York. The name Sheriff Hutton derives from the Old English words
hoh and tun which, when combined mean farm on the spur of land . The prefix of Sheriff
originates from its association with Bertram de Bulmer, the Sheriff of York in 1115, who once
held title to the estate. Later the Bulmers married into the powerful Neville family. The Nevilles
became lords of the manor in 1331 after the Bulmers male lineage failed. In 1382 John, Lord

However, much of the present structure is the result of rebuilding and additions carried out
between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. Inside the church is a white alabaster effigy of a
young boy wearing a long robe and his head, bearing a coronet, rests on a pillow of winged
beasts, possibly gryphons. This statue represents Edward of Middleham, Prince of Wales, the
son of Richard III, who died in 1484. Furthermore, a small piece of stained glass above the effigy
depicts the Sun in Splendour , a symbol used by the House of York. However, Edward s final
resting place remains a subject for debate, as the tomb below is empty! Next to the churchyard is
the site of Sheriff Hutton s first motte and bailey castle, erected in 1140 by Bertram de Bulmer.
This type of fortress had a wooden tower situated on a raised earthwork called a motte, with an
enclosed courtВyard, the bailey, surrounded by a ditch and wooden fence. These structures were
easy to build, but still formidable defensive strongholds. From the village, we follow the Ebor Way

of its name as the steep place . According to some sources, John Gower, the first Poet Laureate was

enforcing Affirmative Action many of the people who would normally be disregarded for being
deficient in Spanish would finally have opportunities for desired positions. With applicants
depending on being bilingual for jobs, affirmative action will force employers to focus on
education, certifications, and diplomas. With focusing on credentials, and not language; Employers
will hire those suitable for the job. Also, this allows bilingual to not only have language, but the
necessary credentials for the job. With having bilinguals with credentials leaves room for
translations for those who do not speak the necessary language. With depending on each other for
information, bilinguals, and non bilinguals would have to learn to communicate efficiently, and

The Thousand And One Nights
It is interesting to see how works of anonymous origin, can have such an impact on the society in
which it is created up to the present, while not being deemed as scholarly literature. The human
condition of being emotionally, selfish beings is something that is not purely tied with that of
serious literature. When scanning the realm of scholarly works The Thousand and One Nights
makes an appearance, ironically. To have a such a source of knowledge from many different
countries over a long period of timeis a literature goldmine, which demands to be studied. There
is a element of surprise when the author or in this case authors create more than just a descriptive
narrative. Together they alluded to each other, enhanced each other s works, and created a world
that seems to never end. One might simply think that to write a story within a story is simply a
device to make a narrative interesting. It is rather a way of teaching the characters and the
audience how not to repeat history through an allegorical framework established in the prologue
and through the extended anthropomorphism of in The Tale of the Ox and the Donkey. The
Prologue is perhaps one of the most daunting stories of The Thousand and One Nights. The
depiction of a furious king ending the innocent lives of women he had married and bedded is not
exactly comforting. However, it does form a basis for the allegorical framework found within the
text. King Shahrayar and his brother, King Shahzaman have a similar

How Bill Has Breached The Duty
With this, the existence of a duty of care has been proven and is now time to see if it has been
breached. It is up to Arthur to show Bill has breached the duty . To do so he will need to prove a
reasonable man would have not acted in the same way. The test is objective in a sense that Bill s
skill would not be considered in favour of those of a man who is presumed to be free both from
over apprehension and from over confidence . Bill ignored a warning saying no HGVs should be
crossing the bridge, it can be argued that no reasonable personwould do this.
Moreover, seeing as Bill is a professional, the case of Maynard could be used to further support
Arthur s claim. In this case, it was held that it should also be shown no professional would agree
with the conduct of the defendant. In other words, would another policeman agree on letting an
HGV pass in such weather? The answer to this would arguably be no.
Having proven there is a duty of care and it has been breached, the next step would be to show the
breach was what caused damages. Causation has 2 main elements legal and factual. In order to
establish legal causation, one must use the but for test. In our case, the test would look something
like, But for Bill s negligence, would Arthur s accident have occurred. This test only questions the
facts of the case and is relatively straight forward. Thus, ignoring everything else, no, Arthur would
not have been in an accident if he had not been on the bridge, which Bill

Feminism in Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter Essay
Written in 1850, The Scarlet Letter stood as a very progressive book. With new ideas about women,
main characters stories intertwined, and many different themes, The Scarlet Letter remains today as
a extremely popular novel about 17th century Boston, Massachusetts. Not only was the 19th
century a time for the abolition of slavery movement but it was also the beginning of the first wave
of feminism. Women such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Lucretia Mott
catalyzed the women s rights movement. These prominent women believed that a woman s role
was no longer in the house and that women should be afforded the same opportunity as men.

Wilson s question, a question testing Pearl s religious knowledge and belief in god, exemplified
her courage. An outspoken character, Pearl was beyond her age in knowledge as well as many
other aspects. The fact that Hawthorne created this girl as an unyielding character illustrates his
support for the feminist cause. Yet another time Pearl s aptitude surfaced was the warning to her
mother. Come away, mother! Come away, or yonder old Black Man will catch you! He hath got
hold of the minister already. (Hawthorne 123) This realization Pearl possessed between good and

While Puritan women are weak and dependent upon their husbands, Hester Prynne is empowered

The Fly By Katherine Mansfield
The story The Fly, n by Katherine Mansfield in 1922, paints the picture of an old man who
referred to as the boss, who is grieving from some sort of tragic event that happened to him.
Continuing to read through the story, the narrator goes on to inform the reader that the boss son
was killed in World War I, and that the boss is still reeling from the death of his son. From a little
hinted symbolism we can connect that the fly itself represents the grief that the boss is going
through, while the inkwell and life are two of the same, and that the ink blots are the boss
attempts at trying to fight the grief that has overcome his life due to the tragic event that
transpired. When the narrator first talks about the fly, it is at the moment that the boss is
looking at the photograph of his son and talking about how he passed away six years earlier. The
fly is said to have fallen into his broad ink pot, and was trying feebly but desperately to clamber
out again. The fly is seen as trying to get out of the pot. Very feebly, the boss helps the fly out of
the pot with his pen. The fly in this story comes to represent the boss that the grief is going
through because no matter how hard the fly tries to get out of the pot by itself, it could not
without a little bit of help. Unlike Woodifield, who got over the death of his son, unlike Macey,
who was not close to the son, the boss could not get over the death of his son. In addition, we are

on 31 March 1939, Chamberlain issued a formal guarantee of Poland s borders and said that he
expected Hitler to moderate his demands.
Hitler was not deterred, and on 3 April he ordered the Wehrmacht to prepare for the invasion of
Poland on 1 September. Hitler was convinced that Chamberlain would not go to war to defend
Poland and that France would lack the will to act alone.
Nazi Soviet pact
Hitler s only real concern was that a sudden German invasion of Poland might alarm Stalin and
trigger a war with the Soviet Union. Stalin feared a German invasion and had been seeking an anti
Nazi collective security alliance with the western powers for many years, but by July 1939 Britain
and France had still not agreed terms.
Poland had also rejected an alliance with the Soviet Union, and refused permission for the Red
Army to cross its territory to engage the Wehrmacht in a future war. Hitler saw his opportunity, and
authorised his Foreign Minister, Joachim von Ribbentrop to enter into secret negotiations with the
Soviet Union.
The result was the signing of the Nazi Soviet Pact on 23 August 1939. Both Hitler and Stalin set
aside their mutual antipathy for national gain and in particular the restoration of their pre 1919
borders.

Alma Luz Villanueva s I Was A Skinny Tomboy Kid
Feminism is a major issue in the world today. Despite the fact that rights for women have been
long given, there are still many major social gaps between women and men. I Was a Skinny
Tomboy Kid by Alma Luz Villanueva rejects a patriarchal lifestyle and promotes feminism
because of it s tone, word choice, and layout. I Was a Skinny Tomboy Kid is told in a very tense
tone. Phrases like fists clenched into tight balls , deep darkness of my sleep , and thin, stubborn
weed all contribute to a tense and almost enclosed feeling. However, the part that really promotes
feminismis where the tone seems to soften, and a kind of childlike innocence is shown. This
occurs when the speaker is talking about flying from roof to roof, when they re talking about their
mother, and at the end, when they are talking about waking up late at night. The latter two
particularly promote femism, because the attention of the reader is drawn to the parts of the poem
where the tone changes. This way, if the author promotes feminism at these specific parts, the
reader will catch onto it and accept it better.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It uses phrases like, grow up to be a woman , and be helpless like my mother , and that may seem
like it is actually promoting a patriarchal society. However, that is just how the speaker is seeing
things. The next few lines are the ones that truly show the feminism at this part of the poem. I
didn t realize the kind of guts it often took for her to just keep standing where she was. This line
seems to contradict the speakers earlier words of her mother being helpless. However, that is the
point. Choosing the word helpless but then contradicting that word with the kind of guts it often
took shows the reader that the speakers mother is strong because she is seen as helpless. She is
looked down upon by others, including her own daughter, but has the guts to keep on

Jon Snow And Frank Gallagher
Jon Snow and Frank Gallagher are two very different individuals as they reside on opposite ends
of the spectrum in terms of morals. But one thing is for sure, they both know how to put
themselves and others around them in danger. That and their amount of near death experiences are
most likely their only major similarities, although Jon s are from battle and Frank s are from
alcohol poisoning. Frank Gallagheris the father of a lower class, dysfunctional familyin the
Showtime series Shameless. The biggest standout of Frank s behavior would probably have to be
how drunk he is at all times. He has been qualified as the most impressive case of alcoholismby a
renowned doctor. This causes him to be a horrible father who fails to connect with and provide
for his family due to his alcoholism and unemployment. As a result, the eldest sister of the
family had to step up as the main provider. Frank exhibits many odd behaviors while intoxicated,
he frequently finds himself waking up in strange places with no memory of how he arrived
there, these places can range from his house kitchen in Philly to a random sidewalk bench in
Toronto. But interestingly enough, his oddest behavior, at least from the perspective of his kids,
comes from when he is not inebriated. This is difficult to see because Frank is always drunk, but
in one episode he gets offered $3000 if he can remain sober for two weeks for a scientific study. His
soberness changed everything. Instead of the kids having to

Destruction In Frankenstein
A heavily emphasized theme in Mary Shelley s Frankenstein is science vs. nature or Destruction
against creation, as in the case of Frankenstein science and destruction seemingly go hand in hand.
The narrator, Victor Frankenstein, is a natural philosopher who is so fixated on the creation and
destruction of life that he devotes years to discovering a way to create life in inanimate objects.
Once Frankensteinaccomplishes this feat, he has, in a sense, upset the balance of nature. In creating
this one unnatural life, Frankenstein also destroys the lives of others. It is no coincidence that
Frankenstein becomes ill as he works on creating this unnatural life. He explains that the fever and
nervousness that plagued him every night was a disease that I regretted the more because I had
hitherto enjoyed most excellent health.. (Shelley 83). Although he normally does not get sick often,
Frankenstein repeatedly falls ill while working on this project. One could suggest that Frankensteins
failing health is natures way of trying to lead him away from the un natural life he is Creating.
Creating life in such a scientific manner is unnatural and could potentially have consequences,
which it does later on in the story and these consequences are not limited only to... Show more

Frankenstein s fear of the monster he created drives him insane and he becomes extremely ill. His
devotion to giving life to an inanimate object actually drains the life out of Frankenstein himself. As
Frankenstein creates scientific life in the Monster, he destroys the natural life within

Anti War and Pro War Movements of the 20th Century
Pro war and Anti war movements for the 20th century
There have been movements that support or oppose war throughout all of history. The 20th century
saw this movement coalesce into a much larger and more diverse series of society changing
events. Spanish American war, World War I, World War II, the Cold War
, Korea, Vietnam and
Desert Storm were all wars that helped American society evolve into what it is today. For each
of the conflicts, there were opposing points of view as to the amount of involvement or to even
become involved at all. The pro war or more conservative point of view lists strength and strong
support for our allies as a primary focal point. The anti war or liberal point of view is more of an

America entered the war in 1917 after Germany severed diplomatic ties with the United States. The
sinking of the Lusitania in 1915 which took the lives of over 150 Americans and the sinking of the
Sussex in 1916 also worked to alter the mindset of many Americans.
Music of the time included folk songs from Joe Hill such as The Preacher and the Slave which is
an anti war song that stems from the working class opposition to the war. I Didn t Raise My Boy to
Be a Soldier by Al Pianadosi and Alfred Bryan was a song from the point of view of the mother of a
boy that was sent off to war. Her fears are that he won t come home again and that she raised him to
be a good person, not to kill other mother s boys. Pro war or patriotic songs such as Over There by
George M. Cohan and made popular by Billy Murray is a song from the eyes of a patriotic person
who is getting his gun to go over to Europe to help the good fight. Another pro war song was It s
a Long Way to Tipperary written by Jack Judge that is about a man that is off to war but
remembers his girl in Tipperary which is in Ireland.
World War II began in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. The United States had an isolationist
policy similar to that at the onset of the First World War. The Neutrality Act of 1935 stipulated that

Impact Of Modernisation Of Ireland
The modernisation of Ireland through the period of 1534 1750 was monumental in the development
of Ireland itself. While it would be impossible to delve into detail of all the occurrences and reforms
that modernised Ireland in this period, it must be acknowledged that the reformation, restoration,
plantations, constitutional changes and various monarch s interests and activities in Irelandgreatly
affected the changes in the country. Throughout this essay the focus shall be directed towards
political changes, plantations and Oliver Cromwell s activities in Ireland that led to a modernised
early modern Ireland by the end of the 18th century. In the year 1534 Thomas FitzGerald, the 10th

well as using institutional development and reform. It could be stated that these reforms were not
necessarily unsuccessful in Ireland throughout this time as it was not until 25 February of the year
1570 when Pope Pius V issued a papal bull, Regnans in Excelsis, declaring Elizabeth I of England a
heretic and allowing all her subjects to be released from any allegiance to her therefore allowing

grasses and other herbaceous (non woody) plants. Grasslands cover nearly 50 percent of the land
surface of the continent of Africa. While grasslands in general support diverse wildlife, given the
lack of hiding places for predators, the African Savannah regions support a much greater diversity
in wildlife than do temperate grasslands. The root systems of perennial grasses and forbs form
complex mats that hold the soil in place. Mites, insect larvae and earthworms inhabit deep soil,

And the scavengers (vultures and hyenas) are animals which eat the remains of dead animals. A
food chain, describe the feeding relationships between species to another within an ecosystem,
shows how each living thing gets its food. For example, a simple food chain links the trees and
shrubs, the giraffes (that eat trees shrubs), and the lions (that eat the giraffes). Each link in this
chain is food for the next link. A food chain always starts with plantlife and ends with an animal.
The general structure of an ecosystem is more or less like a pyramid. Each level influences the
number of individual in the other levels. Masses of plants (producers) are at the bottom and support
the whole structure. If the plants that support the food chain are destroyed, the whole system will
collapse. If an animal further up the chain is destroyed, that may cause a population explosion
below and disrupt the balance of the ecosystem (ZAP, n.d.). Intense, short duration trampling and
dunging by grazing animals is a natural part of how ecosystems function in arid and seasonally dry
environments. Removing grazers damages these ecosystems, which depend on disturbance by
grazing animals to perform vital functions such as mulching soil and planting seeds. The intense
trampling that mimics the effects of wild herds has proven effective at healing environmental
damage in grasslands and deserts (Keppel, 2005). Overgrazing has

Philip Larkin s An Arundel Tomb

RELATIONSHIPS
In Phillip Larkin s An Arundel Tomb, the themes of doubt and uncertainty are juxtaposed against
immortality and ever lasting love. Written and published in 1964, Larkin s ekphrastic poem
depicts a pair of memorial effigies in Chichester Cathedral. Whilst an uncertain relationship
between the earl and countess can be suggested through the phrases: ... scrap of history and [t]heir

Gender In The Color Purple
The overarching trauma of this novel is highlighted by Celie s relationship with Shug Avery.
Though the brutality continues, Celie still manages to find an escape allowing her to come
closer to the line of thriving. For Celie her first notion of Shug comes from her abusive husband
s obsession with the singer. Her growing sense of imagination and curiosity began to develop a
more nuanced character. The reader is given a new looking at the character; Celie crosses the
threshold of survival to thriving only for a few fleeting seconds. Our first encounter of this
diminishing joy unfortunately encapsulated a well rounded sense of author s purpose. And then
I think about Shug Avery. I know what he doing to be done to Shug Avery and maybe she like it.
I put my arm around him (Walker, 12). There are several key elements that the author has
intentionally created. The first being the motif of sex, for Celie sex has been a brutal massacring
for her body, which resulted in two heartbreaking children. While these children were taken from
her and killed, Walker highlights the wedding night sex scene shifting from brutal to sad. The
reader can clearly see that the idea of Shug is what allows Celie to escape from her horrid reality.
As Charmaine Eddy notes in his paper entitled Marking the body: the material dislocation of
gender in Alice Walker s The Color PurpleBecause Shug s picture has initiated lesbian sexual desire
in Celie, this imitation must be seen as a transvestism, a drag

To say that education is a social function, securing direction and development in the immature
through their participation in the life of the group to which they belong, is to say in effect that
education will vary with the quality of life which prevails in a group. I agree with Dewey that
education is a social function because people learn in the presence of others. I also agree with
him regarding variation in education. If a community lives poorly, the education in that
community wouldn t be able to be very effective since its people don t have as much to offer
through participation. Dewey also said that a society which not only changes but which has the
ideal of such changes as will improve it, will have different standards and methods of education
from one which aims simply at the perpetuation of its own customs. This makes sense because if
a society is changing in order to improve itself, it will have different values than one that just
wants to reinforce old customs. They would be setting higher goals for themselves to achieve but
the society that is just aiming to keep up with its customs would just keep using the same customs
and values repeatedly. This applies to what Dewey says later in his essay. He wrote that a
democratic society would be more interested than other communities in having cause to be in
deliberate and systematic education. He also

Jointness Research Paper
Jointness implies cross Service combination wherein the capability of the joint force is understood
to be synergistic, with the sum greater than its parts (the capability of individual components). The
joint force is a values based organization. The character, professionalism, and values of our military
leaders have proven to be vital for operational success. [JP 1 pg ix]
Sun Tzu and Carl von Clausewitz s theories offer valued perspectives that are essential to
understanding warfare. The concepts of Jointness/Unified Action and Knowing your Enemy

It was during Desert Shield/Storm, the United States had realized the essential need for alliances
combine member s capabilities, and the importance of joint collaboration through an effective

or more precisely Unified Action continues to be debated among scholars and analysts alike.
Regardless of what side you agree with, the United States enjoyed overwhelming resources in
which to apply overwhelming force obtaining favorable results. There was a defined victory;
operations appeared to have gone extraordinarily well and with relatively few casualties. But
behind the scenes, unified action was not prevalent. Mission success, through cooperation and joint
decision making by commanding officers from all participating service branches, appeared to be
working, with mission accomplishment as the primary objective. However, a narrower mission
focus soon surfaced, and was dominated by specific military services senior commander s
personalities and divergent agendas. This lack of focus and distraction from the newly established
joint doctrine had a deleterious effect on cooperation and a joint effort among the services. The
tactical units were willing to work together despite the squabbling among the senior leaders. The

snacks for ourselves or eat in front of the children, and if we have unhealthy food it must be kept
in a cupboard hidden and put away. AC2 Describe with examples ways of encouraging children
and young people: a) to make healthier food options b) to eat the food provided for them There
are many ways to encourage children to eat healthier and keep healthy eating exiting. Such as:
Cooking together with a child Let the child pack a packed lunch Grow own vegetables and fruit
Make a collage on healthy eating Make funny faces on plates out of fruit Show children how to
grow vegetables Take children food shopping Making the child feel more involved in preparing
food and making them feel that their in control they will be more likely to eat the healthy food.
It is important not to use food as a reward as this can have an impact on an emotional relationship
with food. Food shouldn t be used to comfort a child either, but allow them to help prepare where
possible. Making the food look as attractive as possible can attract children to trying something
new, and make dinner time fun. Most families try and eat together, this can be to make sure the
child eats and try and respect the foods the child genuinely doesn t like. Never force

Religious Allegory In The Film The Seventh Seal
Yuniska Castaneda Joann Falcon ENC1102 12/05/17 The Seventh Seal I. What will happen to
us who want to believe, but cannot? A question that can resonate with a copious amount of us.
The fear of the unknown, fear of a death with no afterlife but also a fear of one with a promise of
possible damnation, fear of death in general. Antinous Block (Max von Sydow) the main
protagonist of the film The Seventh Seal faces this internal dilemma throughout the entirety of
the motion picture with no real resolution found for it. A parallel made to those felt in real life,
deliberately done so by director Ingmar Bergman. The seventh seal is a 1957 Swedish film which
brought Bergman into the limelight with its release in the western world. Everything about
Bergman s work in the late nineteen fifties stupefied American moviegoers everywhere, with its
stunning cinematography and disconcerting imagery full of religious allegories. The seventh
seal was considered Bergman s way of exorcising his theoretical demons, his own personal fear
of death. To Bergman s utter delight and joy, he was not alone with those sentiments. The film
was originally written as a screenplay with the title Painting on Wood , it was later performed at
Sweden s Radio Theatre in 1954. Bergman later changed it to the seventh seal, the title was taken
from the Book of Revelations, an appropriate title considering the timeline of the film. The film is
set in the Middle Ages at a time when the Black death was

The Philosophy Of Working Partnership
The philosophy of Working in partnership is vital in health and social care as it embraces
strategy for successful care delivery service for service users and care providers. Local authorities
and health care professionals have the responsibility to provide these services that are able to meet
the social and health care needs of the local population. Their duty can only be carried in
partnership between themselves or with other agencies
According to Glendinning et al. (2002, p. 3) partnership working consist of two or more agencies
working together with the intention to deliver benefits or added values whilst sharing trust ,equality
and responsibilities which cannot be achieved by an individual alone
There are six different philosophies generally acknowledged and aspired to be fulfilled in health
and social care partnership working which are as explained below.
Firstly, Autonomy is conceptualised as self determination in health care ethics, which means if a
person is autonomous, he or she can make own decisions regarding treatment and care
(Widdershoven and Abma, 2012, p. 217). Independence indicates playing self governing roles
around everything to do with oneself (Beales and Platz, 2008). For instance, allowing an elderly
client to perform easy daily tasks on her own and waiting till the completion of task can promote an
independent achievement of the service user.
Secondly , making informed choices implies to making aware of available

Energy Crises in Pakistan
Energy crises is one of the major issues in our country pakistan. According to a survey 8% of the
total revenue generated by a telecom company is lost due to outage of power supplied to BTS.
Although the BTS has back up systems installed which are uninterrupted power supply and
generator. When the main power supply of the BTS fails, it shifts to UPS, if the failure presists
for longer time the BTS shifts to generator. With all the equipments installed to avoid power
failure the BTS power outage is very high. When the BTS power dies out that particular cell is
out of the global communication network. In urban areas this phase is for a short period of
time but in rural far off areas this problem is for long time unless someone comes to fix it. On
observing, the power outage occurs due to lack of power monitoring systems. The system
demands for a continuous monitoring of the power of the BTS so that when any one of the
source dies out the service providers should fix it as soon as possible. In urban areas the revneue
generated is very high and a particular company can afford alot of man power to monitor the BTS
continuously but in rural areas the revenue generated is low and continuous monitoring by man
power isnt possile all of the time. This project BTS power monitoring and alarm system based on
GSM module is an attempt to minimize the issues permanently with least man power for
monitoring the BTS. This system collects the signals from the power sources, step down the

Causality And Casuality
This study does not conclusively establish a positive correlation between high testosterone and anti
social behavior. The researchers concluded from a correlational study that a causal relationship
exists, yet that assumption is faulty. Causality cannot be implicated due to reverse causation or a
third confounding variable. Regardless, there is still merit to this data if high testosteroneis said to
not play a predisposing role to aggressiveness. For example, a third variable, physical activity,
tends to increase testosterone. Therefore, actors and NFL players who are more physically active
than ministers, should have higher levels of testosterone; which does not imply high testosterone
leads individuals to choose more anti social and aggressive

I Carry Your Heart With Me
E. E Cumming s poem [i carry your heart with me(i carry it in] conveys a love poem about how
the persona feels about the one they love. It is not stated whether the speaker is a male or female,
but it is clear how they feel about their lover. Not only does the speaker express his love about the
person, but also about nature. While Cummings expresses himself as a poet who does not seem to
abide by normal poetic routines, he uses trochee, parallelism, syntax, and enjambment for the
strength in this poem.
Cumming s uses trochee and parallelism in each meter. The spaces in each start of a new breath,
the lowercase letters and the parentheses he adds to his poems distinguishes him from other poets.
Another difference between him and other poets is he does use the traditional end rhymes but
syntax. The trochees present in this poem appear as dum da dum da, in the words i go, you go ,
represented in line 3. In lines 8 9 Cummings places ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cummings may seem confusing to the reader as he uses a lot of it is, but it isn t detail. For
example, in lines 3 4 the speaker claims that whatever is done by only him is lover is also doing,
which means nothing is ever truly done by him, but it is and also in lines 5 6 when he says i fear
no fate(for you are my fate, my sweet) meaning that the lover is their fate. Cummings talks about
love in a more foundational and strong way to connect two lovers instead of puppy love and ruby
hair. It is not a typical love poem because Cummings uses imagery and visuals to explain the love
between the two lovers. He does not focus on just getting the other person, but about connecting
and the world as a whole. With his diction and wordplay, Cummings allows the reader to develop a
different meaning and understanding of love. Not the common love that everyone knows about, but
the out of the realm kind of

Descendants come from all around the globe, primarily from Europe. When you think about who is
fighting for you, and who is on your side, you think of the men and women in the uniforms,
chanting Hoorah, you don t think about ethnicity or race, you think about who is there to protect
you when you need help. In the text, it is stated that, Over 300,000 Italian speaking soldiers enlisted
in the American Army, almost 10 percent of our total fighting force. Italians formed about 4 percent
of the population of the United States and they formed 10 percent of the American military force.
Their casualties were 12 percent.. (12). What the author is trying to show the audience is that,
with this bill, there may or may not be an army big enough to suffice the United States. Still after
the war, the men who served were still treated like garbage due to the fact that they were not born
in America. In the speech, Clancy is sure to announce his final feelings on the bill when he
expressed, All that study convinces me that the racial discriminations of this bill are un American,
(23). Those Italians fought for the country that they loved, the land of opportunity and the land of
the free, still, after fighting for what they believed in, they were discriminated and still not
considered an American. Clancy did an excellent job on making sure we knew that more than half
of the Italian population in America fought for us to be free, and that they were more American

Economics Of The Gold Standard Debate
Economics of Globalization
September 18, 2015
Sydnee Lyman
The Gold Standard Debate
Beginning in 1870, each nation converted their national currencies to their relative worth in gold.
This was called the Gold Standard and it has brought up many arguments between politicians,
businessmen, and organizations with prominent economists on whether or not to return to it.
Although there are multiple reasons why America should not return, there are also many resurfaced
ideas that would make it very profitable for us to do so. The United States abandoned the gold
standard to finance WWI. Shortly after the war was the beginning of the Great Depression. The
Gold Standard constrained governments from helping the financial system and the economy
during this time. The reason we abandoned the Gold Standard was because of the crisis our
country and many others were in. The Gold Standard began in 1870 in Britain, which ironically
was the first country to go off of it in 1931. The United Stated adopted this policy in 1913, this
guaranteed the amount of paper money you had could be returned to the government for the amount
it is worth in gold. This made paper money actually worth something to citizens living in nations
where they were unsure of the value. When gold deposits were mined, the value of currency
dropped. In America, printing money was the cause of hyperinflation. During WWI, many countries
abandoned the Gold Standard to finance the war then returned shortly after. Then in 1929,

A Research Study On The Foster Care
Abstract
This research study will examine whether or not the foster care age out transition process,
including the availability of specific education programs (i.e. banking, home building and
economics, college prep) as well as the availability of resources provided to foster children prior to
aging out of the foster care system, has a direct impact on a perceived successful or non
successful transition to independent living. This research will gather information from three
specific groups of people; current licensed foster parents, foster care social workers and former
foster children that have aged out of the foster care system within the last two years. This study
will be utilizing the nonprobability method of purposive sampling as all research participants will
be selected on the basis of their participation with the foster care system in three different specific
roles. This research will study the perceptions of whether or not there are adequate programs
designed and utilized for the purpose of successful transition. This information will be gathered by
three separate questionnaires specifically designed to address each role of the foster care study.
The information will be utilized for the intent of evaluating the age out process of foster care for
minors transitioning into adults.

Library Access Disadvantages
3.12) According to first amendment every person has a right to express their feelings. Considering
the first amendment, library staff has right to complaint against the library committee to Federal
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission as they were held up with hostile environment.
Library is a public place where various categories of people come to improve their knowledge with
available libraryresources in a peaceful environment. It is very important for library team to take
proper precautions as children of age below eighteen also visit public libraries.
If the libraries don t have filters and limitations on usage of internet access the library resources can
be misused. So, these kinds of conflicts can be avoided by taking proper precautions and safety
measures. Libraries should have filters so that whenever anyone is trying to access unusual sites
in public place it can directly block the site. The systems should be placed in such a way that
library staff can monitor what people are trying to access and if they notice any unwanted stuff is
displayed on screens they can directly block such kind of users. Library printers should not be
accessible by public people. If anyone wants a printout they need to send document to library staff
and only staff system can print documents. In this way library staff will have access to documents
and they can avoid if anyone wants to print unwanted stuff.
Thus, by taking proper precautions and monitoring the library resources above

Similarities Between The Yellow Wallpaper And A Rose For...
In the story, A Yellow Wallpaper the narrator tells her story of her life living with her husband
and she comes off as a distressed, morose wife. In A Rose for Emily Emily is struggling with
keeping a tradition in her family and is also and also distressed. Both women deal with the
struggles of their husbands who do not give them attention or treat them well. They both show
similarities in their qualities of life. In William Faulkner s, A Rose for Emily and Charlotte Perkins
Gilmans The Yellow Wallpaper, both have female characters who have to endure and overcome
struggles of loneliness, isolation, insanity, and depression as the female protagonist.
In A Rose for Emily she grows up with her father who was very controlling over Emily s life. He
controlled all aspects of her life such as any men who were interested in Emily were sent away
by her father. This kept Emily isolated from everyone in the town and she never left her house.
According to Watkins The Structure of A Rose For Emily, The inviolability of Miss Emily s
isolation is maintained in the central division, part three, which no outsider enters her home. In
The Yellow Wallpaper it is shown that the female narrator is desolate and is put in an attic room
away from everyone. It is also revealed that she is not treated fairly or well taken care of when
her husband who is a physician does not help her get better. From Gender in The Yellow Wallpaper

Affirmative Action Definition
Affirmative action was first created in 1961 and was signed by President John F. Kennedy, with
intent to improve the lives of those who tend to suffer from discrimination. Court rulings have
upheld affirmative action policies, we have seen examples of this in court but also in employment
opportunities and school admission processes.
Affirmative action policies have continued to be supported in court rulings. The final rulings of
Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1978) are significant as they allowed race to be
one of the several factors allowed in college admission policies. Allan Bakke, a thirty five year old
white man, applied twice to the University of California Medical School in Davis. Although his

Information Technology Department s Plan Essay
Given that a major goal of the [HISD] Information Technology Department s plan is to ensure that
technology strategies and operations support the overall learning process (HISD, 2012), the
hardware and software to be installed and implemented in the district s standardized computer lab
will serve as a reflection of this goal. The standardized computerlab will support multiple computing
clients, including thin client Chromebooks, a tablet computer cart, and a student workstation with
desktop computers. In their 2016 Standards for Students, the International Society for Technology
in Educationoutlines six domains in which students should demonstrate proficiency so that they can
be prepared to thrive in a constantly evolving technological landscape (ISTE, 2016). Included in
these domains is that of the Creative Communicator, in which students choose the appropriate
platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication (ISTE,
2016). To provide students opportunities to practice creating and collaborating across platforms and
throughout the elementary, middle, high school and adult stages of learning, multiple categories of
computing devices will be selected for installation in the HISD standardized computer lab: thin
clients in the form of Chromebooks, tablet computers, and desktop computers.

At only 14 years old, Smart was taken from her home, located in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was not found until nine months had passed. Brian David Mitchell broke into the Smart s home and grabbed the youngster from her room that she shared with her sister Mary Katherine. Rewind to around 2 days before her kidnapping, Smart was in her class at church. Her Sunday school teacher had preached a few things that she took to heart. If you will pray to do what God wants you to do, He will change your life, he said. I pressed my dress again, my head down. I was listening carefully to him now. I don t know what it was, but there was something in the way he said it, the intensity of his voice, that made me realize that what he was saying was important. That day after church, Elizabeth went into her closet to escape the loudness of her siblings and prayed. God, I m here, I said. I m only fourteen. I know I m just a little girl. But I ll do whatever it is that you want me to do. I really do want to serve you. But I m not sure that I know how. Elizabeth does not think what transpired was something that God expected. He without a doubt would not have wished the anguish and torment that she was going to experience upon anybody, particularly upon a young girl. But since that time, I have learned an important lesson. Yes, God can make some good come from evil. But even He, in all His majesty, won t make the evil go away. Men are free. He won t control them. There is wickedness in this world. Which left me with this: When faced with pain and evil, we have to make a choice. We can choose to be taken by the evil. Or we can try to embrace the good. • 15. The Count Of Nevilles Analysis This walk explores the beautiful countryside to the north east of Sheriff Hutton, visiting the hamlet of High Stittenham and the secluded valley of Mowthorpe Dale. The extensive views stretch across the Vale of York. The name Sheriff Hutton derives from the Old English words hoh and tun which, when combined mean farm on the spur of land . The prefix of Sheriff originates from its association with Bertram de Bulmer, the Sheriff of York in 1115, who once held title to the estate. Later the Bulmers married into the powerful Neville family. The Nevilles became lords of the manor in 1331 after the Bulmers male lineage failed. Inside the church is a white alabaster effigy of a young boy wearing a long robe and his head, bearing a coronet, rests on a pillow of winged beasts, possibly gryphons. This statue represents Edward of Middleham, Prince of Wales, the son of Richard III, who died in 1484. Furthermore, a small piece of stained glass above the effigy depicts the Sun in Splendour , a symbol used by the House of York. However, Edward s final resting place remains a subject for debate, as the tomb below is empty! Next to the churchyard is the site of Sheriff Hutton s first motte and bailey castle, erected in 1140 by Bertram de Bulmer. This type of fortress had a wooden tower situated on a raised earthwork called a motte, with an enclosed courtВyard, the bailey, surrounded by a ditch and wooden fence. These structures were easy to build, but still formidable defensive strongholds. From the village, we follow the Ebor Way onto the Howardian Hills and join the Centenary Way which leads to High Stittenham. • 17. The Thousand And One Nights It is interesting to see how works of anonymous origin, can have such an impact on the society in which it is created up to the present, while not being deemed as scholarly literature. The human condition of being emotionally, selfish beings is something that is not purely tied with that of serious literature. When scanning the realm of scholarly works The Thousand and One Nights makes an appearance, ironically. To have a such a source of knowledge from many different countries over a long period of timeis a literature goldmine, which demands to be studied. There is a element of surprise when the author or in this case authors create more than just a descriptive narrative. Together they alluded to each other, enhanced each other s works, and created a world that seems to never end. One might simply think that to write a story within a story is simply a device to make a narrative interesting. It is rather a way of teaching the characters and the audience how not to repeat history through an allegorical framework established in the prologue and through the extended anthropomorphism of in The Tale of the Ox and the Donkey. The Prologue is perhaps one of the most daunting stories of The Thousand and One Nights. The depiction of a furious king ending the innocent lives of women he had married and bedded is not exactly comforting. However, it does form a basis for the allegorical framework found within the text. King Shahrayar and his brother, King Shahzaman have a similar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. How Bill Has Breached The Duty With this, the existence of a duty of care has been proven and is now time to see if it has been breached. It is up to Arthur to show Bill has breached the duty . To do so he will need to prove a reasonable man would have not acted in the same way. The test is objective in a sense that Bill s skill would not be considered in favour of those of a man who is presumed to be free both from over apprehension and from over confidence . Bill ignored a warning saying no HGVs should be crossing the bridge, it can be argued that no reasonable personwould do this. Moreover, seeing as Bill is a professional, the case of Maynard could be used to further support Arthur s claim. In this case, it was held that it should also be shown no professional would agree with the conduct of the defendant. In other words, would another policeman agree on letting an HGV pass in such weather? The answer to this would arguably be no. Having proven there is a duty of care and it has been breached, the next step would be to show the breach was what caused damages. Causation has 2 main elements legal and factual. In order to establish legal causation, one must use the but for test. In our case, the test would look something like, But for Bill s negligence, would Arthur s accident have occurred. This test only questions the facts of the case and is relatively straight forward. Thus, ignoring everything else, no, Arthur would not have been in an accident if he had not been on the bridge, which Bill ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Fly By Katherine Mansfield The story The Fly, n by Katherine Mansfield in 1922, paints the picture of an old man who referred to as the boss, who is grieving from some sort of tragic event that happened to him. Continuing to read through the story, the narrator goes on to inform the reader that the boss son was killed in World War I, and that the boss is still reeling from the death of his son. From a little hinted symbolism we can connect that the fly itself represents the grief that the boss is going through, while the inkwell and life are two of the same, and that the ink blots are the boss attempts at trying to fight the grief that has overcome his life due to the tragic event that transpired. When the narrator first talks about the fly, it is at the moment that the boss is looking at the photograph of his son and talking about how he passed away six years earlier. The fly is said to have fallen into his broad ink pot, and was trying feebly but desperately to clamber out again. The fly is seen as trying to get out of the pot. Very feebly, the boss helps the fly out of the pot with his pen. The fly in this story comes to represent the boss that the grief is going through because no matter how hard the fly tries to get out of the pot by itself, it could not without a little bit of help. Despite the fact that rights for women have been long given, there are still many major social gaps between women and men. I Was a Skinny Tomboy Kid by Alma Luz Villanueva rejects a patriarchal lifestyle and promotes feminism because of it s tone, word choice, and layout. I Was a Skinny Tomboy Kid is told in a very tense tone. Phrases like fists clenched into tight balls , deep darkness of my sleep , and thin, stubborn weed all contribute to a tense and almost enclosed feeling. However, the part that really promotes feminismis where the tone seems to soften, and a kind of childlike innocence is shown. This occurs when the speaker is talking about flying from roof to roof, when they re talking about their mother, and at the end, when they are talking about waking up late at night. The latter two particularly promote femism, because the attention of the reader is drawn to the parts of the poem where the tone changes. I didn t realize the kind of guts it often took for her to just keep standing where she was. This line seems to contradict the speakers earlier words of her mother being helpless. Grasslands cover nearly 50 percent of the land surface of the continent of Africa. While grasslands in general support diverse wildlife, given the lack of hiding places for predators, the African Savannah regions support a much greater diversity in wildlife than do temperate grasslands. The root systems of perennial grasses and forbs form complex mats that hold the soil in place. And the scavengers (vultures and hyenas) are animals which eat the remains of dead animals. A food chain, describe the feeding relationships between species to another within an ecosystem, shows how each living thing gets its food. For example, a simple food chain links the trees and shrubs, the giraffes (that eat trees shrubs), and the lions (that eat the giraffes). Each link in this chain is food for the next link. A food chain always starts with plantlife and ends with an animal. The general structure of an ecosystem is more or less like a pyramid. Each level influences the number of individual in the other levels. Masses of plants (producers) are at the bottom and support the whole structure. If the plants that support the food chain are destroyed, the whole system will collapse. If an animal further up the chain is destroyed, that may cause a population explosion below and disrupt the balance of the ecosystem (ZAP, n.d.). Intense, short duration trampling and dunging by grazing animals is a natural part of how ecosystems function in arid and seasonally dry environments. Removing grazers damages these ecosystems, which depend on disturbance by grazing animals to perform vital functions such as mulching soil and planting seeds. The intense trampling that mimics the effects of wild herds has proven effective at healing environmental damage in grasslands and deserts (Keppel, 2005). Overgrazing has ... Though the brutality continues, Celie still manages to find an escape allowing her to come closer to the line of thriving. For Celie her first notion of Shug comes from her abusive husband s obsession with the singer. Her growing sense of imagination and curiosity began to develop a more nuanced character. The reader is given a new looking at the character; Celie crosses the threshold of survival to thriving only for a few fleeting seconds. Our first encounter of this diminishing joy unfortunately encapsulated a well rounded sense of author s purpose. And then I think about Shug Avery. I know what he doing to be done to Shug Avery and maybe she like it. I put my arm around him (Walker, 12). There are several key elements that the author has intentionally created. The first being the motif of sex, for Celie sex has been a brutal massacring for her body, which resulted in two heartbreaking children. While these children were taken from her and killed, Walker highlights the wedding night sex scene shifting from brutal to sad. The reader can clearly see that the idea of Shug is what allows Celie to escape from her horrid reality. Ryn, in his essay The Ideology of American Empire, America has an ideology of American empire. John Dewey s ideology regarding America is that it should be a democratic society. To say that education is a social function, securing direction and development in the immature through their participation in the life of the group to which they belong, is to say in effect that education will vary with the quality of life which prevails in a group. I agree with Dewey that education is a social function because people learn in the presence of others. I also agree with him regarding variation in education. If a community lives poorly, the education in that community wouldn t be able to be very effective since its people don t have as much to offer through participation. Dewey also said that a society which not only changes but which has the ideal of such changes as will improve it, will have different standards and methods of education from one which aims simply at the perpetuation of its own customs. This makes sense because if a society is changing in order to improve itself, it will have different values than one that just wants to reinforce old customs. They would be setting higher goals for themselves to achieve but the society that is just aiming to keep up with its customs would just keep using the same customs and values repeatedly. This applies to what Dewey says later in his essay. He wrote that a democratic society would be more interested than other communities in having cause to be in deliberate and systematic education. Local authorities and health care professionals have the responsibility to provide these services that are able to meet the social and health care needs of the local population. Economics Of The Gold Standard Debate Economics of Globalization September 18, 2015 Sydnee Lyman The Gold Standard Debate Beginning in 1870, each nation converted their national currencies to their relative worth in gold. This was called the Gold Standard and it has brought up many arguments between politicians, businessmen, and organizations with prominent economists on whether or not to return to it. Although there are multiple reasons why America should not return, there are also many resurfaced ideas that would make it very profitable for us to do so. The United States abandoned the gold standard to finance WWI. Shortly after the war was the beginning of the Great Depression. The Gold Standard constrained governments from helping the financial system and the economy during this time. The reason we abandoned the Gold Standard was because of the crisis our country and many others were in. The Gold Standard began in 1870 in Britain, which ironically was the first country to go off of it in 1931. The United Stated adopted this policy in 1913, this guaranteed the amount of paper money you had could be returned to the government for the amount it is worth in gold. This made paper money actually worth something to citizens living in nations where they were unsure of the value. When gold deposits were mined, the value of currency dropped.
