The Montana Center for the Book promotes Montana libraries, literature, and literacy, through the Letters About Literature national writing competition for young people, and through Humanities Montana's OpenBook program, One Book Montana , and the Montana Festival of the Book .
In mid-2007, the Group began reading Booker Prize winning books and has since tackled Dublin-IMPAC Literary Award winners.
Sarah Klassen not only won the 2007 Best Fiction Award, she influenced the program’s evolution. In her acceptance remarks for the award, she urged consideration of an award for poetry, the genre for which she is most known. Her encouragement was one of the factors which led to the creation of a new award for poetry the following year.
Of almost 50 publishers from 3 countries, 4 Canadian provinces, and 11 U.S. states, Coteau Press has been the most successful in the High Plains Book Awards since the program’s inception, except for the University of Oklahoma Press.
