  1. Career and Technical Education serves students and families across the state of Utah. CTE Introduction is the foundation class for all Utah students in grade 7.
  2. Welcome to your 7 th Grade Student Education Occupation Plan. Many of you had an SEP in elementary school. In 7 th grade we add the O or Occupation aspect to the Student Education Plan and it becomes an SEOP. Students will have an SEOP each year of school, grades 7-12. Some may be with a group; others will be individual. We hope that all parents can attend every SEOP with their student. We will celebrate your student, explore his or her career interests, and learn various tools that your student can access to be successful.
  3. CTE Intro is tool that you have for learning more about your future. Many of the activities that you do in CTE Intro this year help you understand more about yourself and how you can be successful during middle school or junior high school and after high school. Please follow along with your CTE Intro notebook as we review what you have learned this year.
  4. Students, please take out your “Charting Your Future” sheet. While they are getting this out, parents, please note that all CTE Intro Career Development Activities can be found online. The address is in the bottom right hand corner of the back side of the sheet. If your students have any blanks, they can review the lesson online with you. This information sheet is our “table of contents” for our CTE Intro Career Development Activites. It reviews each one of the lessons that you learn.
  5. Please look at the SEOP Glossary. Each student records meanings for different words discussed in the lessons. Some may have been new, Economic Security for example, other words students may already know, perhaps Leisure Time or Talent.
  6. Sometimes adults panic when we talk to younger students about careers. When we talk about careers in CTE Intro we are really following these definitions from Donald Super, Professor Emeritus at Teacher’s College, Columbia University. Using these definitions, we can see that an appropriate Career Decision Making Activity would be to help elementary students transition from 6 th grade to 7 th grade or to help middle school/junior high school students prepare for the choices they will make in high school.

In these terms a graphic presentation of a person’s career might look like the graphic above In this context, the SEOP process when connected with CTE Intro, becomes the ideal means for helping students and their parents or guardians make more meaningful education and career choices. The middle school years are a time of exploration and discovery. Students need experiences that broaden their horizons. Many occupational opportunities are not visible to students in the communities in which they live. Relationships between interests, skills, education, and work possibilities are obscured by students’ limited experience base and the disconnect, either at home or in school or both, in establishing and illustrating linkages. CTE Intro affords students a rich opportunity to develop knowledge and skills, explore and expand on their self-understanding and connect their future plans to this increased awareness and understanding.
  8. There are 19 different career development lessons in CTE Intro. They fall into three categories. The first four lessons create an awareness of the world around your students. The next emphasize self-knowledge. The last focus on career exploration. The lessons in white are taught by the school counselors, the ones in yellow by the CTE Intro teachers. We appreciate the work the CTE Intro teachers do in preparing students for their SEOP.

  11. Let’s review quickly each lesson. This review provides a brief refresher for students and an introduction for parents. Please take time after your SEOP to review with your student the Career Development Activities that are available on the CTE Intro home page. The first activity is called The Dream. Each student looks at what they would like their future lifestyle to be like. What kind of housing, transportation, entertainment and so forth would they have as a part of their life? They also had to estimate how much this would cost per month. On the next page, students write a paragraph to explain how they saw their future when they are 30 years old. Let’s take a minute to read through those. Any volunteer to share? I enjoyed reading what students had to say. One student wrote how he wants to play for the Boston Red Sox. He described the townhouse that he owned in Boston and what his family was like. It was fun to read.
  12. The next lesson is about the world of work. Students are introduced to key career development concepts such as definitions for job, occupation, and career as well as the “Sky-High” messages or life themes: Change is constant Learning is ongoing Focus on the journey Follow your heart Access your allies If you look on their Charting My Future summary sheet you can see which lesson your student relates to most and why it is important to them. Students were also introduced to the Area Pathways Signpost Chart which describes the eight program areas of CTE.
  13. Lesson 3 students learn about inequalities and differences in the work world. They explore how education and occupational choice relate to future lifestyles, including income and leisure time.
  14. Optional form: this school discusses the concept of “pay yourself first” in order to establish retirement, savings, college funds, etc.
  15. During lesson five, students evaluate their use of time and understand how time, focused goals and planning can help them accomplish more.
  16. Lesson 6 is designed to find out how many occupations students could list at this point in their career development list.
  17. The US Department of Labor has identified 1200 occupational titles. These are the occupations that start with the letter A. How many more would you need to complete the list. Is the list ever “really” complete? New occupations are being created everyday. What students today do in the future many not even be invented yet.
  18. During this activity, students learn to define personality. They identify their own personality type (according to Dr. John Holland’s model) and learn to classify some occupations according to these personality types.
  19. Abilities and talents make up an important part of our personalities. During this lesson students assess their talents and abilities and set goals to develop skills.
  20. Using Dr. Howard Gardner’s Seven Multiple Intelligences, students learn more about how they naturally think and learn and how these natural abilities can be used to increase success in school and work.
  21. Knowing what values are important to them, students are better able to develop career plans that will be more satisfying and rewarding.
  22. During lesson 11, students expand their understanding of themselves through a career interest inventory.
  23. Students are introduced to nontraditional occupations (those occupations where 25% or less of the employees are of one gender). By knowing what nontraditional occupations are, students are able to choose a career unrestricted by social or cultural expectations.
  24. Lesson 13 helps students understand the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for future success and how information and skills they are learning in school relate to their lives outside of school.
  25. During lesson 14, students review seven basic skills needed for good teamwork.
  26. During lesson 11, students expand their understanding of themselves through a career interest inventory.
  27. Research indicates that early middle school/junior high school years are critical in helping students commit to staying in school. For instance, students who are going to drop out of school have often made that decision as early as 7 th grade, even if they don't leave school for several more years. The U.S. Department of Education has found that students who commit to post-secondary education by 8 th grade are more likely to pursue it. This activity helps students understand more about options after high school.
  28. Using the new UtahFutures computer program, students locate and evaluate career information through researching occupations.
  29. During this lesson, students learn the process to making good decisions, see the connection between decision making and their future, and review the lessons learned in CTE-Introduction.
