A Pivotal moment for AIDS:
June 2011 High-Level Meeting UN Member States
commit to new targets for 2015
   • Halve sexual transmission of HIV

   • Halve HIV transmission among people who use drugs

   • Ensure no children are born with HIV

   • Get 15 million people on ART

   • Reduce TB deaths in people living with HIV by 50%

   • Close the global resource gap for AIDS and increase funding
     to US$ 22-24 billion per year
A Pivotal moment for AIDS: continued
also committed to critical enablers


   • Involve people living with HIV and young people;
   • Eliminate gender inequalities and gender-based violence;
   • Ensure human rights based responses
   • Eliminate remaining HIV-related restrictions on entry, stay and
     residence;
   • Remove obstacles such as laws and policies to provide
     affordable and effective HIV prevention and treatment products
ZERO new HIV infections.
GLOBAL 2011 – new infections declining

Reasons for Stigma & Discrimination – other than “HIV”




 For Filipinos Living with HIV
 • 21% - verbal insult, harassed, threatened
 • 38% - loss job or refused employment
 • 8% - denied health care
 • 8% - physical assault
ZERO AIDS-related deaths.

  1. OVER 7000 new infections a day in 2011 2.5 million new infections in 2011 – a drop of half a million from 2010 about 97% are in low and middle-income countries about 900 are in children less than 15 years of age about 6000 are in adults, 15 years and older, of whom: almost 47% are among women about 41% are among young people (15-24) BUT STILL FAILING KEY POPULATIONS – people who use drugs, men who have sex with men and sex workers.

  3. Three main causes that need to be addressed : Lack of awareness of stigma/discrimination and their harmful effects Fear of acquiring HIV through everyday contact Linking people with HIV to behavior considered improper or immoral
  4. BUT STILL FAILING KEY POPULATIONS – people who use drugs, men who have sex with men and sex workers.
  5. 82% of estimated Filipino adults in need of ART reached 3 new infections for every person enrolled on ART
