ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IN DIGITAL WORLD: AdaProjecT *** T he study and exploration of architecture. ***Architectural design education ***Architecture of the physical world ***Architecture of the virtual world. ***Distance Learning ***Digital design environment ***Virtual Design Studios ***The Architectural Design Arena (AdaProjecT) on the web (www.adaproject.net)
The practice of architecture is employed to fulfill both practical and expressive requirements of civilized people and thus embraces both utilitarian and aesthetic ends. Although these two ends may be distinguished, they cannot be separated, and the relative weight given to each can vary widely. Almost every settled society that possesses the techniques for building, produces architecture. Briefly, a rchitecture is concerned with the creation of the physical environment in order to achieve its integration with human life and human usages. ARCHITECTURE: DEFINITON Architecture (from Latin, architectura and ultimately from Greek, "a master builder", from αρχι- "chiefs, leader" , τέκτων "builder, carpenter") is the art, science and technique of designing buildings and structures.
It is also described as the expression of society or culture in spatial, experiential form. Both of these definitions describe architecture as a concept or idea which has both physical and virtual expressions . So; a definition of architecture is offered which envelopes and relates the fields of physical and virtual architecture. Architecture is defined as the making of a place by the ordering and definition of meaningful space, as developed in response to a need or program. ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IN DIGITAL WORLD: AdaProjecT
It is that which is traditionally studied in schools of architecture and for which designers become licensed professionals. Physical architecture is the embodiment and expression of societal values in physical form (like bricks and mortar). PHYSICAL ARCHITECTURE We witness physical architecture as buildings, parks, plazas, cities, suburbs, and landscapes.
However, virtual architecture is that which embodies and expresses values of society in digital form virtually, ****with polygons, ****vectors, and ****texture maps. Lacking physicality, it does not exist on a geographic site as traditionally understood. Rather, it is accessible via computer and human-interface technology anywhere one has access to the Internet. Like physical architecture, virtual architecture, needs to be designed. The world and the experience that one can have in it must be consciously shaped. VIRTUAL ARCHITECTURE
A church can be seen an an excellent example of physical architecture. A physical building in a specific context, with a well-defined entry off of an urban plaza. EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL ARCHITECTURE outside, ***the plaza Inside *** nave *** numerous icons and symbols *** the architectural elements which serve a structural function. *** apse, a heavenly space as the heart of the building. It is a place for communication with the spiritual, a sacred space.
While there are countless examples of physical architecture which have been designed and built over the millennia, there are far fewer examples of virtual architecture due to the relative youth (decades) of electronic media and computer technology. EXAMPLES OF VIRTUAL ARCHITECTURE Cyberspace has an architecture of its own and, furthermore, can contain architecture The earliest examples of virtual architecture as mediated by networked computers are the text-based environments of MUDs (multi-user domains) and MOOs (MUD, object oriented). In MUDs and MOOs, multiple users to log in to a shared environment on a computer network and interact using text.
Recently, hyperlink technology of the World Wide Web has been combined with three-dimensional modeling languages (like VRML) to offer the potential of a rich experience of virtual environments, interconnected via the Internet EXAMPLES OF VIRTUAL ARCHITECTURE These environments are filled with multiple participants on-line, interacting in interconnected three-dimensional virtual worlds.
Lately, the emergence of Internet-based communication technologies (ICT) has facilitated the rapid growth of distance education (DE) in the world. DISTANCE EDUCATION ****Traditional lecture courses are now routinely supplemented by online resources. ****Each academic year brings new courses and entire degree programs online; ****There are now virtual universities that have operated entirely online long enough to produce several classes of graduates. ****New approaches and new tools allow courses to be offered that were once considered impossible to teach at a distance ****Learning at a distance learning owes its beginning to the Egyptian/Phoenician invention of writing and portable media.
Architecture has been recognized as one of the learned professions from the earliest times of recorded history. ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION ****The first professional known to history, Imhotep , is credited with designing the "step pyramid" at Saqqara. ****By introducing the world to its seven built wonders, Herodotus (485-425 BCE), considered the father of (Western) history, can be considered one of the first distance educators in architecture. ****The earliest surviving paper on architecture was written by the Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius (Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, 70-25 BCE), in which he set forth three guiding principles — firmitas (strength), utilitas (function), and venustas (beauty). He had learned from Greek manuscripts, at a distance.
The design studio is the central focus of architectural education in schools worldwide DESIGN STUDIO The term describes not only a place, but a totally -immersive process and a social system . It is where and how students form their attitudes and learn to think, act, draw, write and speak like an architect. *** The design studio is a well-established context for architectural learning. *** Collaborative learning and designing have been demonstrated to support effective learning in architectural design teaching ***Communication of design studio is mostly graphic, and partly oral. ***During assigned class time, the instructor will work his or her way through the studio space, giving will "desk crits" (critiques) to each of the students.
A Virtual Design Studio is distributed across space and time and information is represented electronically. THE INTERNET and THE VIRTUAL DESIGN STUDIOS Since 1993, the year the Internet first became accessible to the public, a few institutions — MIT, University of Oregon, Hong Kong University, and Texas A&M among them—have conducted these virtual design studios, *joining with others around the world to work on collaborative studio projects, *conducting juries, *reviews and even desk crits online with guest experts. ***Different time zones have been used to advantage, permitting the studio project to operate around the clock in North America, Europe and Asia ***Language barriers have presented surprisingly few difficulties for those who are communicating in the language of design.
The concept of a Virtual Design Studio (VDS) refers to a networked design studio. THE INTERNET and THE VIRTUAL DESIGN STUDIOS A conventional design studio is a place in which designers work on drawing boards and/or CAD. The VDS takes this notion and distributes it across space and time. In a VDS: ***the design group is composed of people in various locations ***the design process and designers' communications are computer-mediated and computer-supported ***the information "inside" the studio is handled in electronic form ***the final design documentation is also in electronic form
A conventional design studio is a place in which designers work on drawing boards and/or CAD. The VDS takes this notion and distributes it across space and time. THE INTERNET and THE VIRTUAL DESIGN STUDIOS The technology available for the studios includes ***CAD, ***image processing, ***World Wide Web, ***video conferencing, ***email, ***shared file and file transfer, and ***shared whiteboards. The potential for this technology in a design environment is to reduce the need to physically meet when collaboration is needed.
A RCHITECTURAL D ESIGN A RENA ADA Project ( www.adaproject.net)
A RCHITECTURAL D ESIGN A RENA ADA Project ( http://adaproject.net) (http://www.adaproject.net) AdaProjecT is an arena where architectural design process occurs on the network. This project is developed in the context of a research project and basically it focused on ADA Studio . Architectural design process includes many components, so AdaProjecT is established in a framework that  gives the possibilities to the designer ***to make collaborative and constructive discussions *** to share skillful drawings and creative designs on the web.
A RCHITECTURAL D ESIGN A RENA ADA Project ( www.adaproject.net) There have been a lot of Virtual Design Studio experiences up to today.  AdaProjecT  is a kind of VDS that users can study and participate their knowledge in an on-line, real-time and interactive way. The  design sketches and expressions can be made through uploading images and  drawings with the necessary text explanations. AdaProjecT with its focal point, ADA Studio, enables the designers to share their ideas and in a virtual environment. Ada Studio is structured to constitute certain categories which give the most appropriate possibilities for sharing design ideas. The main subject of this research project is Contemporary Arts and Cultural Center in Nicosia.

This project is developed in the context of a research project and basically it focused on ADA Studio . Architectural design process includes many components, so AdaProjecT is established in a framework that  gives the possibilities to the designer ***to make collaborative and constructive discussions *** to share skillful drawings and creative designs on the web.
