5. Vision and Outcomes Continuing Education/Corporate Training at Hill College: By being a provider of knowledge and education to all population segments of the district, CE/CT will lead its various communities and its constituents into an ever-changing future.
6. Vision and Outcomes Rather than using the typical SWOT approach, we would reverse that somewhat to an OTSW approach: “This visioning process starts with desired customer value and works backward to the resources needed to achieve that value.” (Establishing Vision Software Strategies, October 2000, Vol. 5, #10)
7. Vision and Outcomes A formal visioning process would be initiated to create a renewed partnership with the various communities: Small Business (farmers, ranchers, machinists, etc.) Retail Corporate (large and small corporations) Education (public school districts and college) Government (city, county, and state officials) Health (medical and hospital officials) Individuals
8. Vision and Outcomes Comprehensive Visioning Process: Large initial group answers three questions: What should Hill College continue doing? What should Hill College start doing? What should Hill College stop doing? Create Steering Team - 6-8 outside members chosen from the group to solve the following tasks: Create a timeline. Begin by determining end results (Stephen Covey). Determine what is success and how to measure it. Determine what disconnects exist and why.
9. Vision and Outcomes Comprehensive Visioning Process – Part II Create Steering Team (continued). Define and focus on successes already in place to build momentum and resources. Examine comprehensive use of business model as opposed to academic model (leads to strong community involvement). Create a decision-making template. Create a format to cover expenses + 40% (investing seed money back into program for growth). Hire faculty. Create programs identified by the “community.” Advertise programs.
10. Vision and Outcomes Comprehensive Visioning Process – Part III Create Steering Team (Continued). Create platform: Create. Teach. Measure (outcomes). Application to work environment. Marketing perspective (longitudinal evaluation – creating a database to measure overall success – as used in Malcolm Baldridge Award). Develop follow-up. Discuss (which leads back to Create) Build a 5-7 year plan.
11. Vision and Outcomes Comprehensive Visioning Process – Part IV Get College involved: Create comprehensive marketing plan (college relations/marketing classes) . Find success stories to help market programs. Determine segmented target markets (leisure learning is discretionary learning – improve quality of life vs. certifications. Business learning is get it done now). Do survey across counties to determine what people/businesses see as needs (institutional effectiveness). Fully examine business model approach (college administration).
12. Vision and Outcomes Comprehensive Visioning Process – Part V Develop consistency (lack of consistency - major reason why businesses go elsewhere for training) Consistency in teaching curriculum (value). Consistency in providing same excellent teachers. Find superstar teachers and keep them. Consistency in knowing and determining customer needs. Market Research. What popular courses already in curriculum. Determine top 10 classes. What popular/needed courses not taught in curriculum. Get community involved. Work with area Chambers of Commerce. Work with area Economic Development Boards. Work with regional TWC Workforce Development Boards.
13. Vision and Outcomes We would incorporate Continuing Education, Corporate Training, the Small Business Development Center, and the Career Opportunity Center with the College’s academic, workforce, and adult education departments and its faculty members with our business, corporate, industrial, and governmental employers and employees, creating an extremely rich base of knowledge and services from which we can establish opportunities for life-long learning.
14. Vision and Outcomes Opportunities for those with available time and resources to devote to leisure and/or learning: The stay-at-home parent The retiree The baby-boomers
15. Vision and Outcomes Children are our future. There need to be opportunities for expanding the cultural, intellectual, and even fun-filled lives of these young people. Summer camps offering sessions in math, science, fine arts, and other academics along with traditional “Kids Camp” activities allow us to invest in our future students.
16. Vision and Outcomes Senior College Program for laid-off employees, baby-boomers, and retired citizens (second career people). These people just want a room that they can call their own. They will gladly meet and tell you what they want and need in terms of courses (programming).
17. Vision and Outcomes Home Schooled Students – new source of students for Dual Credit (both transfer and CTE), but they also want courses in study skills, test-taking, ACT/SAT prep, etc. Area Colleges (share resources and work with each other for mutual benefit)
18. Vision and Outcomes The Hill College mission statement directs us to : “enhance the educational, cultural, and economic development of our service area and to assist both individuals and groups to prepare themselves for a more responsible and productive life.” My vision honors that mission statement commitment and will strive to accomplish it daily.
