California Native Americans lived in different environments along the coast, in valleys, mountains, and deserts. Coastal people built homes away from the ocean and obtained clothing and food from the sea. Valley people caught fish from rivers and streams and hunted game, berries, and nuts. Mountain people constructed warm, sturdy homes and dried meat, while men hunted. Desert people followed wild foods and grew crops in rich soil during times of scarcity in early spring.
