This slide helps to illustrate the inherent complexity of the typical SMB network. A typical SMB network has between 5-7 different manufacturer’s products, when you account for: firewalling, IDS, routing, switching, wireless and telephony. WHEW! That’s a lot of manufacturers. This scenario burdens the customer with multiple, inconsistent warranties and support contracts, while providing only a basic level of integration.

Welcome to a network where there is a new way of communicating. On the human network, people can converse and collaborate with each other in a new way. Not through the exchange of impersonal voice mails. Or e-mails read after the fact. Now, all communications applications and devices (such as voice, video, data, Web collaboration, and IM) work together. Before you pick up a phone or start to type a message, you know who is available and how best to reach them — on which device – wired or wireless, anywhere, anytime, creating a consistently rich communications experience. It's easier for you to get through to the people you want to connect with, securely, when you want to connect with them. That's Cisco Unified Communications. Many small businesses are now leveraging VoIP, but it is important to realize that VoIP allows only call transport over an IP data network. Cisco Unified Communications, on the other hand, integrates the telephone system securely with data applications like IM, email, and calendars to enable improved efficiency, reliability, and productivity. So the power of UC is in the fact that one converged, secure network is a great solution for any business that may have reached capacity with their existing system, reached end of life, end of lease, or is moving to a new building or expanding and adding new locations. The benefits of a converged network based on IP are not only that you have one secure network to manage, but you can have voice applications working together in ways that can greatly enhance your business, from computer telephony integration with your CRM system, making mobile employees more productive, and bringing collaboration and efficiencies that cannot be found with simple VoIP

In addition to the enormous increase in spam volumes, spammers are also innovating with the type of spam they are sending. Spammers will continue to test new techniques to see what can bypass the spam filters. As recent as 2005, spam was predominantly text based. In 2006, Image spam growth skyrocketed. More recently, several different techniques emerge: PDF spam, Excel spam and MP3 spam and blended malware. Spam is becoming more sophisticated than ever and you need a solution that will accurately separate messages, both good mail and bad.
Let’s talk first about our spam Cisco provides a multi-layer spam defense: The first is a sender-based reputation filtering: What reputation filtering does is look at the internet protocol (IP) address of all incoming messages and assigns each IP address a score between -10 and +10. Based on that number, the filter determines the likelihood of the IP addresses to be sending spam. The second is layer is Cisco About 80% of all spam can be blocked just by looking at the reputation of its IP address. For the messages that need to pass further to the Cisco appliance, each message is opened and hundreds of thousands of different rules are applied to those messages to determine if each of those messages are spam.
Let’s talk in more detail about each of these characteristics: The first characteristic is SenderBase. This is the worlds first, biggest and best email and web traffic monitoring network. SenderBase analyzes traffic patterns and network characteristics of a given sender to determine trustworthiness. SenderBase is unique in the industry (no one has the same data) Cisco has 8 out of the 10 service providers as customers, 40% of the world’s top 100 companies. These customers share data with Cisco about the email traffic coming in and out of their network. Cisco also augments this data with various spam traps and third party information all over the world. One-third of the world’s email traffic flows through this system. This gives Cisco the ability to analyze spam volumes and trends in real-time to protect our customers.
Why should Horus be part of SBCS solution? The key here is that both phases of this combined offering: - Delivers on the Cisco value proposition of leveraging the network and our solutions to deliver additional value - Plays to Cisco being a ‘one-stop-shop’ for small business technology requirements - Gives Commercial and Physical Security sales teams an offering that gets them “in the game” with video and video surveillance (initially IP only, analog support in later phase) - The combined can be built on for other markets opportunities (think DMS) Additional background: Why Cisco Be in this Business and why should ARTG Build It? Cisco has the core technologies in Access Routing Technology and Surveillance. Video Surveillance Market experiencing strong growth IP will overtake CCTV by 2011 Previous barriers such as price, complexity of operating, and installation are being removed Barriers Security customers are traditionally conservative Security distributors and sellers lack IT and networking expertise IT competitors lack security expertise Decision making and buying will become more complex because of coordination between IT and security organizations
