                                     Simple Present Tense
I sing.
How do we make the Simple Present Tense?
subject + auxiliary verb + main verb
                 do              base
There are two important pieces of information:
1. For positive sentences, we do not normally use the auxiliary.
2. For the verb to be, we do not use an auxiliary, even for questions and negatives.

How do we use the Simple Present Tense?
We use the simple present tense when:
  * the action is general
  * the action happens all the time, or habitually, in the past, present and future
  * the action is not only happening now
  * the statement is always true

Look at these examples:
  * I live in New York.
  * The Moon goes round the Earth.
  * John drives a taxi.
  * He does not drive a bus.
  * We meet every Thursday.
  * We do not work at night.
  * Do you play football?

Note that with the verb to be, we can also use the simple present tense for situations that are
not general. We can use the simple present tense to talk about now. Look at these examples of
the verb "to be" in the simple present tense - some of them are general, some of them are now:
Am I right?
Tara is not at home.
You are happy.

Put the correct forms of the verbs into the gaps. Use the Simple Present in the statements.

1) We ____________ our the her on Sundays. (to call)
2) Emma ____________ at night. (to dream)
3) They ____________ at birds in the morning. (to look)
4) John ____________ home from school. (to come)
5) I ____________ my friends on Tuesday. (to meet)
6) He ____________ the laptop. (to repair)
7) Walter and Frank ____________ hello to us. (to say)
8) The cat ____________ under the tree. (to sit)
9) You ____________ water when you are thirsty. (to drink)
10) She ____________ the lunchbox all the time. (to forget)

Negate the first sentence in each task. Write the negation of the verbs into the correct gaps.
You can use long or short/contracted forms of the auxiliaries.

1) The girls are outside. - The girls _______________________ outside.
2) She knows the answer. - She _______________________ the answer.
3) We live in a small house. - We _______________________ in a small house.
4) I have coffee for breakfast. - I _______________________ coffee for breakfast.
5) Water boils at 90°C. - Water _______________________ at 90°C.
6) My brothers work in a café. - My brothers _______________________ in a café.
7) Marie and Helen do judo. - Marie and Helen _______________________ judo.
8) The dog always barks. - The _______________________ dog.
9) I remember Bill quite well. - I _______________________ Bill quite well.
10) Kate sings alone. - Kate _______________________ alone.
