MEET WINIFRED
“I have learned in whatever situation I am to be
content.”
Meet Winifred.
He’s all bent over. What hair he does have,
is grey and as wild as the wind that blows
through it, if it dares. Winifred has a scowl
so large, he has to carry it in a wheel-
barrow in front of him. Winifred is so
cantankerous the dogs run when they see
him wobbling down the sidewalk.
The sidewalk would run too, if it could!
You see, Winifred is a collector. He collects
complaints. He packages comparisons in
pickle jars; contentions in cigar boxes;
criticisms in milk crates. He stores them
on the broken shelves on every level of his
mind. He doesn’t just collect complaints,
he hoards them.
There are only tiny footpaths in his mind
between all the complaint containers.
Throughout his whole life, so far, he “got
this” or “did that”, all in search of
“something better”. These things satisfied
him for a time, but then they quickly
turned into burdens or disappointments.
He has collected so many regrets and
dead-end decisions in his Yesterdays and
worries about his Tomorrows, he trips over
them as he ambles along his Todays.
Winifred did not know this, but the
“something better” he was searching for
was an intangible, something called
contentment. After never reaching
contentment, and collecting only
complaints, Winifred became disillusioned,
One day Winifred got out his big family
dictionary and crossed out the word
“Contentment”.
Winifred doesn’t believe Contentment
exists.
We may not see ourselves as extreme as
Winifred, but we can understand him. We,
too, know how to complain. Like Winifred,
we mortals can fritter away many hours
spinning about what only belongs to the
past: “the good old days” or second-
guessing our decisions and reliving old
events. Equally, we can squander many
hours [and much energy] turning over our
imagination on how things will be better
[or worse] in the future. These thoughts
can paralyze us, and we surrender to
gloom.
We Are Not Alone
Wasting our lives in complaint is an all too
common human theme. It happened in the
first family - look at Cain and Abel. One
was discontent with their circumstances
and wasted his, and his brother’s, life.
Discontentment, often caused by
comparisons, can be wasteful.
Discontentment is defined as “Lack of
contentment; dissatisfaction with one's
circumstances.”
In the 1973 film, Papillon, a man befriends
a fellow criminal as the two of them begin
serving their sentence on a dreadful
prison-island, which inspires the man to
plot his escape. During a dream, Papillon,
played by Steve McQueen, is accused by a
judge of a crime. The selected dialog from
the script is simple.
Our Saviour’s Voice
2. 2
(continued from page 1)
The judge says to Papillon: “I accuse you
of a wasted life!”
Papillon responds: “Guilty... guilty...
guilty...”
When we look deep, this tendency to waste
our lives in compliance is caused by a sin-
sick soul.
Which Do You Pay Attention To –
Burdens or Blessings?
We might feel content one moment and
distressed, anxious or worried the next.
Some would say that their “burdens shout
louder than their blessings”. Similarly, our
focus often is more attracted to what is
wrong than what is right. That brings us
to comparison, depression and perhaps
resignation. That thinking instills the tired
old lie, “I will be [or I was] happy when…”
Might this collection of complaints be
called discontentment?
But What About Contentment?
But what about contentment? Is it
possible? Yes, for the long run.
Remembering that the New Testament was
written in Greek will assist us in mining for
some wisdom here. The Greek word used in
the New Testament for contentment, or being
content, is “Autarky”. That word means “self-
sufficient”, or free “from external
dependencies”, “free internally, even from
external circumstances”. This is the word that
St. Paul uses here…
Philippians 4:11 – “Not that I am
speaking of being in need, for I have
learned in whatever situation I am
to be content [to have autarky, self-
sufficiency, to be free of external
dependencies].”
And Paul goes on to explain this
deeper, in verse 12: “I know how to
be brought low, and I know how to
abound. In any and every
circumstance, I have learned the
secret of facing plenty and hunger,
abundance and need.”
And the secret is revealed, that real
“autarky” is the life centered in Christ. See
verse 13: “I can do all things through him
who strengthens me.”
Simple Advice From The Scriptures
Hebrews 13:5-6 – Keep your life free from
love of money, and be content with what
you have, for he has said, “I will never
leave you nor forsake you.” So we can
confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I
will not fear; what can man do to me?”
I Timothy 6:6-8 - Now there is great gain
in godliness with contentment, for we
brought nothing into the world, and we
cannot take anything out of the world. But
if we have food and clothing, with these we
will be content.
Leaving with Empty Pockets
You may recall, we have spoken of the
early church guys, and especially the men
called “The Desert Fathers”. These are
men who, during the early days for the
faith, often under great duress and
persecution, often in crucible
circumstances, described an inner
contentment not found in external objects
or situations. That is what St. Paul is
talking about, “I have learned the secret of
contentment…”
As we mentioned in the recent article
about the Oregon Trail, some of the early
church folks talk about leaving here with
“Empty Pockets”. They would bury their
loved one in Baptismal garments that had
no pockets. In reality, we leave here with
no pockets at all, “Naked we came into the
world and naked we shall leave…”
3. 3
(continued from page 2)
Living with Empty Pockets
Now, we take that thinking back to the
daily life. Nothing we have is ours, it is
God’s, and it is on loan to us, entrusted to
our care for a time. Our parents and
grandparents could take nothing with
them, neither can we. No matter if we
store up barns full of provisions and
treasures for the future, we are not even
guaranteed the next day. See what Job, a
mighty sufferer said of life with no
pockets…
Job 1:20-21 - Then Job arose and
tore his robe and shaved his head
and fell on the ground and
worshiped. And he said, “Naked I
came from my mother’s womb, and
naked shall I return. The LORD
gave, and the LORD has taken
away; blessed be the name of the
LORD.”
In Philippians chapter 4, St. Paul talks
about being internally content no matter
the external circumstance. That is an
intriguing concept. Winifred would trip
over that one, for sure!
There are key words he uses in those
verses: “Secret”, “Contentment”, “No
matter” and “Circumstance”. Wowsers!
Let’s look for those words…
Philippians 4:11-13 - Not that I am
speaking of being in need, for I have
learned in whatever situation I am
to be content. I know how to be
brought low, and I know how to
abound. In any and every
circumstance, I have learned the
secret of facing plenty and hunger,
abundance and need.”
But there is another key word, “Learned”.
St. Paul, like us, matured in his faith over
time. His hardships [Recall the words,
“Tentatio” and “Anfechtung” = Suffering]
were his instructors. This contentment did
not come instantly for St. Paul. He had to
learn it!
And it does not for us either.
See St. Paul’s use of the word “Learned” in
the same identical text…
Philippians 4:11-13 - Not that I am
speaking of being in need, for I have
learned in whatever situation I am
to be content. I know how to be
brought low, and I know how to
abound. In any and every
circumstance, I have learned the
secret of facing plenty and hunger,
abundance and need.”
Paul tells us that his suffering has been a
teacher, an instructor. We talked about
this in last month’s article that “Suffering
Sharpens”.
It would seem very apparent that Paul’s
“learning the secret of contentment” was
indeed learned, the instruction of the
School of Hard Knocks. We know this
again as Anfechtung and Tentatio
[German and Latin, respectfully] for
suffering. Look how St. Paul describes
sufferings as humbling, faith-producing
experiences…
Romans 5:3-5 - More than that, we
rejoice in our sufferings, knowing
that suffering produces endurance,
and endurance produces character,
and character produces hope, and
hope does not put us to shame,
because God’s love has been poured
into our hearts through the Holy
Spirit who has been given to us.
Ok, so Paul suffered. Everyone does. Well
said. Yet I think we would agree, Paul’s
suffering was extraordinary, exceptional
and excessive. Here what he tells us…
4. 4
(continued from page 3)
2 Corinthians 11:23b-30 – “…with
far greater labors, far more
imprisonments, with countless
beatings, and often near death. Five
times I received at the hands of the
Jews the forty lashes less one. Three
times I was beaten with rods. Once I
was stoned. Three times I was
shipwrecked; a night and a day I
was adrift at sea; on frequent
journeys, in danger from rivers,
danger from robbers, danger from
my own people, danger from
Gentiles, danger in the city, danger
in the wilderness, danger at sea,
danger from false brothers; in toil
and hardship, through many a
sleepless night, in hunger and
thirst, often without food, in cold
and exposure. And, apart from other
things, there is the daily pressure
on me of my anxiety for all the
churches. Who is weak, and I am
not weak? Who is made to fall, and I
am not indignant? If I must boast, I
will boast of the things that show
my weakness.
Does being content come fast to us?
Probably not. Paul tells us in Philippians
4:11-13 that he had to learn it. Wowsers!
That is a revelation!
The bottom line? Know that if you find
yourself discontent and complaining, you
are a mortal. Know that the closer you get
to Christ, by faith, the
more content you will find
yourself. Know that, like
Paul, your struggles can be
used as instructors to
teach you to rely on Christ
and build your faith, and
contentment will follow.
We learn contentment is
not the goal. A deeper
relationship with Christ is
the goal, and contentment
comes as a byproduct.
Struggles keep us humble and that
humility keeps our faith dependent on
Him.
An exercise in learning contentment is to
do what our Lord suggested, go into a
room alone, away from everything and
everyone and pray. In this setting, you are
free from distractions except those your
mind stirs up. To be alone, with nothing,
and focus on deep prayer with Christ, that
is the secret of contentment. Paul, in
prison, had plenty of time to do just this.
Next time we begin to resemble Winifred,
collecting complaints, let’s take those
crates of bitterness to the curb and start
to give thanks in all circumstances. Then
we are trusting Christ, no matter what is
going on around us.

The Truth Project Returns
In the film, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the story begins with Dr. Jones, a well‐known adventurer‐
archeologist, directing his college students to two vastly different classrooms. He says, “Archaeology is the
search for fact... not truth. If it's truth you're looking for, Dr. Tyree's philosophy class is right down the hall. If
you want the facts, follow me.”
Here, we want to focus on Truth.
“What is Truth?”, asked Pontius Pilate to Jesus. And that is the question of most philosophers.
For a world without Christ, truth changes with the winds of opinion, culture and perception. For the Christian,
Christ is Truth and His Word is Truth. Christ brings us unchangeable Truth.
Our Saviour will, once again, offer a special class called The Truth Project. It was created by Focus on the
Family. It is not for everyone, but it may be for you. It is for you if:
You like to learn and you would enjoy some studying at home between classes
You wish to commit to something that can have a deep stretching change in your thought‐life and world
perspective
You long to have a deep discipleship with Christ
You wish to interact with other Christians and build life‐long friendships
We will offer the classes this year on Wednesdays from 6‐8pm. The first class will be on September 11 meeting
weekly thru December 11 (no class on November 27 due to Thanksgiving).
This class is offered to members of Our Saviour and other congregations. If you would like to commit to this
class, enroll today by calling the church office at (920) 468‐4065 or sending an email to info@oslc‐gb.org. If

Our Saviour Lutheran Launching
Groundbreaking
Bible Reading Campaign
Join Thousands Nationwide Participating in The Story
The Bible is central to our faith, but many people are intimidated by its scope and size. The
Story gives us a way to journey from Genesis to Revelation together in 31 weeks so
everyone understands God’s story and how their story intersects with it.
The Bible is the best-selling book in
history, but how many people are actually
reading it? A Gallup survey reports the
average American household has four
Bibles. However, research by Pew Forum
on Religion and Public Life (2008) found
that only 16 percent of Americans read the
Bible every day.
We are hoping to reverse this trend. Your
pastors believe that The Story, a
Zondervan best-seller, is the right tool to
increase Biblical literacy, helping readers
understand God’s story from Genesis to
Revelation and how their own stories
intersect with God’s. Consisting of 31
chapters of carefully-selected scriptures
sequenced in chronological order, The
Story presents the word of God in an
engaging format, reading like a novel.
We want the people at Our Saviour, as
well as the region around us, to realize the
incredible love God has for them and how
their story is found in His story.
The Story Church Campaign is a unique
program providing up to 31 weeks of
curriculum for children, teen and adult
Sunday school and up to 31 weeks of
corresponding sermons. When
accompanied by reading through the five
age-related books (The Story, The Story:
Teen Edition, The Story for Kids, The
Story for Children, and The Story for Little
Ones), the entire church can be literally on
the same page for 31 weeks.
With thousands of participating churches
nationwide, The Story is becoming a
movement that is
bringing wide-
ranging benefits to
local churches.
Many have
reported increased
community
outreach,
increased Biblical
literacy, congregational growth and a
greater understanding of how God’s story
reveals the reasons for the things that
happen in man’s story.
YOUR INVITATION TO THE STORY
Join us and experience The Story. Come at 7:45am (before the 9:15am service) on Sunday mornings or join us at
9:15am (after the 7:45am service/before the 10:45am service) beginning on Sunday, September 22. Sermons will

With that in mind, please begin saving for next
year’s sale. Remember, all merchandise should
be clean and in good working order. We do not take
clothes, TV’s or computer monitors (except flat
panel), cribs, mattresses or encyclopedias.
Your donations can be brought down to the large
basement storage area. Boxes are available near the
door so that you can box your donations so they are
stackable. This saves room for more items to be
brought in throughout the year. You can also store
it at your home until next summer when we set up
the gym again! The date of the sale will be Saturday,
August, 16th, 2014. Mark your calendars now!

HOW SHOULD WE THEN LIVE?
COMING SOON: How Should We Then Live? classes to be held on Wednesdays at 6pm
and Sundays at 10:30am, beginning January 8.
The idea of the project, How Should We Then Live?, both as a film documentary and as a
book, was conceived in 1974 and completed in 1976. In the Acknowledgements, Francis
Schaeffer writes about the idea behind the project: “Using my study, over the past forty
years, of Western thought and culture as a base, we could attempt to present the flow and
development which have led to twentieth-century thinking and, by so doing, hope to
show the essential answers.” The subtitle to How Should We Then Live? is “The Rise and
Decline of Western Thought and Culture.” Starting from ancient Roman times, tracing
man’s development throughout the Middle Ages, going to the Renaissance, Reformation,
and Enlightenment, he shows the steps which led to the modern era.

the Greatest Christian Writer Thought About the Greatest Book)
Those of you that participated in The Truth Project will find this series to be similarly
thought-provoking as you develop a world-view. This series will expand our
understanding of how we got where we are politically, socially and culturally. No sign up
necessary. Don’t miss it!
