Serials Solutions is a vendor who the library pays to maintain a list of all the electronic library subscriptions that provide full-text articles. It can match information about a journal article to this list and provide a link to any full-text that is available to OIT students and staff. If the library does not subscribe to the particular article journal, it offers suggestions on how else to get that article. For those who are interested, this product (Article Linker or 360 Link) is called an Open URL resolver.
Summit is the name of the catalog showing the holdings of 36 university, college, and community college libraries in Oregon and Washington. These libraries have agreed to share their books and some of them even more (videos, journals, etc.) The OIT Library pays for a courier to bring the books directly from these libraries. Though the Summit catalog will show articles in the results list, you cannot get them directly from the libraries like you can the books. You need to request them through Interlibrary Loan.
Interlibrary Loan has been happening for decades in libraries – first through the mail and now online. When the OIT library receives a request for a book or an article, it looks it up and finds out what libraries have it. Then it requests the book or the article from that library. Some libraries will charge to provide material and the OIT Library will absorb up to $20 of these costs. Anything over that and we will ask you to contribute. Books come to the library via the mail and articles are usually via email.
