Dear Mama By Tupac Analysis
Family is an important necessity all throughout childhood into a teenager and eventually into an
adult. In the famous song "Dear Mama", by Tupac Shakur goes in great depth on appreciating your
loved ones. Tupac had many struggles in his childhood, to having no father and having a mother
with a drug addiction. In his use of figurative language and word choice, Tupac addresses the theme
of appreciating loved ones. Tupac uses word choice as a way to express his feelings towards his
mother. His word choice "Dear Mama" proves that he is writing his song to his mother (28). In the
chorus, Tupac states, "you are appreciated", and "place no one above ya, sweet lady," confirms that
he appreciates all hardship that his mother went through in raising

Tupac's Influence On African American Culture
Tupac Shakur is a name that will always be associated with defining the genre of gangra rap. Known
as a lyrical genius and often referred to as a prophet rapper he became "a spokesperson not just for
his own generation but for subsequent ones who continue to face the same struggle for equality"
("Tupac Shakur".) As an advocate for the change of African–American strife through his music, he
often voiced that he was his own worst enemy at times. In the 1993 single "Keep Ya Head Up" off
the sophomore album Strictly 4 my N.I.G.G.A.Z. Shakur establishes verisimilitude with his listeners
by narrating experiences of hardships in life, especially within the black community. In addition, the

African–American people are are said to be very in tune to where their culture and traditions stem
from. First, by stating the fact of an individual who has darker skin may be more in touch with
cultural roots (source of origin) which correlates with a long running argument between
anthropologists about where mankind is derived from. According to National Geographic, South
Africa is the birthplace of the human race in the discovery of fossils found at the dig site dubbed
Cradle of Mankind. Secondly, the lyrics refer to the ancestral ties to slavery and all that Africans
have had to endure for thousands of years because of their skin color. Shakur has been in touch with
his own roots from a very young age; his mother and father who were members of the Black Panther
party paved the path leading Tupac to also join. Biograpghy.com states, "after joining the Black
Panther party, his mother changed his first name to Tupac Amaru, after an 18th–century Peruvian

Analysis Of Tupac Shakur 's Song, Dear Mama
The struggles of a single mother is not something everyone will fully understand. In the late 90's
there was huge poverty and gang violence in Los Angeles, California where Tupac grew up. Many
of his songs reflect on how his experience was in this environment. In Tupac Shakur's song, "Dear
Mama" found in album, Me Against the World, for a single mother to show love for her child takes a
huge struggle, especially when it was a time where gang violence was really high and fathers would
leave their children. Throughout the song Tupac uses imagery to capture the feeling of pain and
struggle and fluently illustrate the moments where he was young, until he grew up and realized the
love his mother gave him. "Dear Mama" is also portrayed as a ... Show more content on

The song implements on the hardships a mother will face for the growth of their son because love is
what keeps them going. The love a mother will have for her son means that even though they don't
have a father figure around to show them how to grow up, they will always have their mothers to
teach them the way of life through a woman's perspective. In the song, "Dear Mama", Tupac
mentions, "For a woman it ain't easy trying to raise a man, you always was committed" and he is
able to foreshadow the hardships his mother had to face while Tupac was growing up without a
father. At the age of seventeen Tupac, was always caught up in drama with his mom. Since Tupac
was young he got involved into the hustle and was left in the streets where he basically had to risk
he life every day. He never realized that being pushed into the streets would make him think about
his mother or even worry about her. Tupac reflects upon the behavior he had during the time and
how much stress he would add on his mother's shoulders, but little did he know that his mother
would be there for him regardless. Tupac Shakur's mom was committed to his son and no matter the
troubles he caused and faced she would be there for him to either help him out or at least hear him
when he was not feeling good. She was a single mother on welfare, but she always tried

Tupac Meaning
Interpretation of "Life Goes On" Tupac Shakur, in some people's opinion, was one of the greatest
rappers that's ever lived. Over a decade ago Tupac wrote an inspirational song named, "Life goes
on." "Life goes on," seems to be about the streets taking people's lives, and how even though you
lose someone, you can't waste time mourning because that not what the victim would want you to
do; the victim would want you to live your life because they are not coming back. The three stanzas
in the song gives the audience the feeling that Tupac has lost friend through death, jail, and soon his
time to die will come but he would not want any sad faces and tears, just happiness, because life
goes on. In verse one, the speaker seems to be describing walking through the hallways of prison for
bail. "Breath Stinking/ in my jaws," implies that the artist had just awaken, was rushed, and didn't
have any time to brush his teeth because it was time for him to leave. After leaving the prison it
seems as if he was surrounded by loud people he knows that's filled with excitement because of his
release from prison. Then, "ring, ring, ring, /quiet yawl/ incoming call," gives the audience ... Show

"I got tha word as hell/ya blew trial and tha Judge gave you/25 with an L/ time to prepare to do fed

telling his friend that although he's in jail for life, he will be looking out for his responsibilities, kids,
and baby mother. "taken risks, while keeping cheap tricks from getting on her../ like in the hood...
Implies there is risk that could lead to jail or death protecting his family from cheap man who will

Compare and Contrast 2Pac & Saint John the Baptist Essay
Compare and Contrast
2Pac & Saint John the Baptist
Although they lived in very different times, Tupac Shakur and Saint John the Baptist had many
commonalities. Both became extremely famous for expressing what they believed. The media's
portrayal of Tupac Shakur as a tattooed thug has focused public attention on his accused crimes
instead of his music. This rapper, raised in Marin City, California, by a Black Panther mother, is
more complex than his enemies like to admit. Shakur (who performs as 2Pac) was a talented lyricist
with a gift for storytelling and getting his point across to our youth. He continued to grow as a writer
on his hard–hitting album, "All Eyez on Me" which benefits from West Coast–style production by

6. "I Ain't Mad at Cha," All Eyez on Me : Despite the carelessness, or the, as Tupac would say, "f–––

Tupac Dear Mama Analysis
As a child Tupac Shakur and Sylvia Plath has a lot to deal with before becoming the famous people
we know them as today. In the song "Dear Mama" and the poem "Daddy" gives us a glance of the
difficult situations they went through with their parent and how it has shape their lives in different
ways. Tupac Shakur song "Dear Mama" show his love and appreciation for her work and
motherhood during his youth. Being raised by s single mother have a crack addition, living in
poverty, and dealing with different circumstances brought on by society shaped his relationship with
his mom and made him the conscious rapper society knows him as. His relationship with his mom
started off rocky having to deal with a mother who had a crack addition which kept her form
working and caused her to stop raising her kids. This exposed him to the life of drug dealing,
violence, and gang affliction. He began dealing drugs in order to provide for him and his sister. His
life was also shaped by his mom being a part of the Black Panthers Party because she took her
knowledge of society and gave that knowledge to him which he expressed in his music. Being raised
in the ghetto and dealing with racism and prejudice that he had to endure showed in his life and

The clip I have chosen is a news broadcast, talking about the "performance" of Tupac at Coachella
in 2012. His performance was a hologram of him with Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre. The reason I picked
this clip is the fact that Tupac was killed in 1996, yet he is still a presence and talked about in the
music industry. This particular clip goes even further in explaining why he is admired and looked up
after all this time. Tupac was only 25 when he was tragically killed, but had made a name for
himself in his short life. Through music, acting and his overall public persona, Tupac laid out what
would be seen as an everlasting career. Celebrities and marketing go hand in hand, and Tupac is no

different examples of figurative language. For example he says "The tears i cry are bitter &
warm,They flow with life but take no form" and also, "I cry because my heart is torn, I find it
difficult to carry on". Those are an examples of imagery. In my opinion, I feel that he is in pain and

In the music video he is shown stealing, ditching school, behind bars, and selling drugs. Tupac put
his mother through a lot. He admits to his wrongdoings like when he got suspended from school and
recollects all the stress he caused her. As a child it can be difficult to see that your actions have
consequences. When children do things they might think what's the big deal? What could go wrong?
As Tupac grows older he realizes how the things he did have caused a great strain on his mother. An
interesting point Tupac makes is when he says "I needed money of my own so I started slangin I
ain't guilty cause, even though I sell rocks It feels good puttin money in your mailbox" (41–43) he
brings up the fact that he sold drugs to get money and how it does not bother him. Many people look
down upon drugs and think of dealing drugs as a dirty business, but Tupac sees it as a way to get
money. There was not much he could do about it. He enjoyed having money to spend and money to
give to his mother to repay her for the things she has done for him. When someone need money to
eat or provide for a family they are prepared to do whatever they can in order to make sure it
happens and Tupac did just that. He also talks about how the thugs showed him love, which is a
common thing that happens in gangs. Gangs try to make individuals feel like they belong with them

Tupac: The Words of an Inspirational Lyricist Essay
What defines someone as being inspirational to others, do they have to wear a suit and tie, have a
Harvard degree, drive a fancy car and speak of nothing but glory? I beg to differ; it depends on the
person of whom they are trying to inspire that is why I believe Tupac Shakur is an inspirational icon
to underprivileged individuals. Tupac Shakur, through his music, poetry, and political views,
inspires young disadvantaged people to recognize that there is life for them outside of the ghetto,
poverty, drugs and other adversities. He speaks of poverty, teenage pregnancies, single parenting,
self–esteem and an array of other problems that people living in the ghetto are faced with. Despite

Dyson shows an example of the hypocritical behavior implied by Tupac; he states "His eager
embrace of ethical ambivalence came off to critics as mere hypocrisy. After all, how could the same
artist–or, given the unwilling suspension of disbelief, the same man–encourage women to keep their
heads up one moment and then quickly pelt them with harsh epithets"(15). Tupac has done a lot of
mischief during his career that disqualifies him to be considered ideal for people to look up to. He
states in his song "Hit 'Em Up", "Little Ceasar go ask you [your] homie how I'll leave you/ cut your
young ass up see you in pieces now be deceased/ Little Kim, don't fuck around with real G's quick
to snatch your ugly ass, off the streets/ so fuck peace" (Shakur, 1998).The lyrics in this song shows
outrage and negativity of an artist who desires to put harm upon someone. No parents wants their
daughters and sons looking up to a coward who is constantly in trouble with the law, gang banging,
and a sexist. Most inspirational people live a life of decency, honor, glory, simplicity, and obscurity.
Even though Tupac lyrics imply good qualities, his life style and negative actions are looked at with
a side eye, when being considered inspirational. Regardless of the negativity surrounded around
Tupac, his lyrics gives hope and inspiration to deprived, poverty stricken individuals. Through his

His music is described by Eithne Quinn as embodying "toughness and tenderness" that he
outmatched the other "G–Funk" artists from the time. I see the toughness from the environment he
grew up in that was filled with violence, guns, drugs, etc. Tupac lived off of the streets and grew up
with little to no privileges. As a result, he had to look out for himself and the odds were stacked
against him. "Me Against the World" exemplifies this struggle as he felt like it was just him against
the world at times. The word "tenderness" also perfectly describes Tupac's music. The lyrics in this
song sound heartfelt. He expresses how he feels about the world around him by talking about the
issues people outside of the ghetto are unaware of, but people who live in the ghetto are used to
seeing people get shot and the fear of being shot when he steps outside. As Quinn describes it, this
song and album as a whole are different from his previous work because it focuses on his
"individual paranoia." It does not seem like his lyrics are targeted at one specific audience. It sounds
like he is talking to himself at some times and is retelling his experiences, venting his frustrations
with the world, and the chorus is his way of accepting his situation and how the world is by saying,
"It's just me against the world" and "I've got nothing to lose." In the last verse, it sounds like he is

Tupac Dear Mama Essay
From the day you are born your parents have supported, guided and loved you. We take our parents
unconditional love and support for granted in our busy every day lives. We forget to show our
parents that love back and show we appreciate every effort they put towards us. The song Dear
Mama, written by Tupac Shakur was a song dedicated to his mother to show his appreciation for her.
The rapper's music often displayed his stark contradictions, setting misogyny against praise of
strong women, hard–won wisdom against the violence of the "thug life" (Biography). The song Dear
Mama, was heavily influenced by his family struggles, the choices he has made through his life and
the events going on around him as he grew up. Although, most people look at Tupac Shakur as one
of the most influential rappers of all time, the message he conveys throughout the song is to show
appreciation for the people that love you. When Tupac was born he was already in a life of unusual
beginnings. In 1970, Afeni Shakur, Tupac's mother, was arrested along with 20 other New York

Dear Mama was included in the National Recording Registry. When Afeni was asked how she felt

I'm honored they chose Dear Mama in particular. It is a song that spoke not just to me, but every
mother that has been in that situation, and there have been millions of us. Tupac recognized our

Tupac The Man Who Grew From Concrete Analysis
The Man Who Grew From Concrete Tupac was the man who grew from concrete, despite and
surroundings and against all odds. In the rose that grew from concrete, written by Tupac, there were
a select few poems that intrigued me. My favorite being "What of Fame?" Others like: "Life through
my eyes," "Sometimes I cry," "If I Fail," "No win – dream poem,"also stood out to me. All of these
poems have a common theme of "Me vs. the World." Depression is a big motive for Shakur in his
writing, given that his heart is filled with sorrow. He even wrote a song about his heart turning cold.
Shakur consistantly to use metaphors in his writing, along with masculine rhymes. Being a song
artist, it's only natural. Metaphors allow him a creative outlet for his feelings while making his ideas
easier for the reader to grasp onto. It lets the readers mind have something to think about and
admire. The way that Shakur writes, it's very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He often switches between text and the proper spelling as this can be seen in the last passage. He
uses a lot of masculine rhymes and a very steady rhythm, almost as if he is rapping. Given that a lot
of his poetry double as songs, it's clear to see why. It's very common to read his poems to a beat or
at the pace of a beat for me personally, because I viewed all his poems as songs. He's a very simple
writer, not much of a lyricist, and his rhymes are mostly male rhymes. His grammar utilizes text
language, and can be found in nearly every poem in his book. Tupac uses text language to keep it
simple, and to help with the flow his ideas. He has an incredible sense of rhyme and rhythm and
meter. His overall style is one that countless people fall in love with and one that all can understand.
The reason Tupac is as big as he is, is because there's truth to his writing and a message for every
type of person. This makes him a very relatable poet, and people like to feel connected to

Comparing 'Dear Mama And The Song Mother To Son'
Is a mothers conditional love ever fully appreciated?
The song "Dear Mama" by Tupac and the poem "Mother To Son" by Langston Hughes both
proclaim how growing up, people don not fully appreciate their mothers. They do not acknowledge
what they went through to raise them and give them the necessities of life. These two pieces express
how you have to be at your worse to cherish the best. People need to go through a low part in their
life to appreciate the people around them.
It takes a low point in someones life to fully appreciate their mother. In the song "Dear Mama",
Tupac like many people was at a low point in his life. While he was in such a depressed and low
state, that is when he started to think back to his mother ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the poem "Mother To Son", Langston wants the best for her son and buts him before herself.
Throughout the poem its imagery portrays that the mother and son are climbing stairs to get to a
better place. She is encouraging her son and loving him even when she's run down. " I've been a–
climbin' on....So boy, don't you turn back. Don't you set down on the steps." The mother is
motivating him to make sure he lives a better life then she did. She tells her son to not sit down on
the steps which is a metaphor to her not wanting him to give up and make sure he makes it through
this hard time. She wants him to live a better life then she did. Mothers not only want the best for
their children but they will do whatever is needed to make sure their child has the necessities to
grow up. She is living in sad and poor conditions just to give her son the things he needs for a
successful childhood. The sons mother lived at places with no carpet, splinters everywhere and
boards bordered up the walls. Even in such bad conditions she never gave up on her son. "Life for
me ain't been no crystal stair" she repeats to her son throughout the poem which gives the
impression that her son still does not fully understand what his mom went through to raise him.
Langston is trying to explain what she has been through while still encouraging him to keep going.
Because of this dark moment they are in now, the son

At first glance, Tupac may not seem very versatile to a person who has only heard Shakur's battle
rap Hit Em Up. But you should never judge a book by it's cover, because Tupac was one of the most
versatile rappers in the industry. If you trace his career back to his first album, or even before that,
when his name was MC New York, you will notice how many different rap styles he actually had.
Songs like Young Black Male are a far cry from his more popular songs like Dear Mama and
California Love. In the book "How to Rap" by Paul Edwards, many rappers were interviewed to
offer insight into the Hip Hop industry and the aspects of rapping. Up and coming rap star Bishop
Lamont stated that Shakur "mastered every element, every aspect of Hip Hop", while Fredro Starr of

The Hate U Give Little Infants Everybody: Textual Analysis
Tupac Shakur's concept of Thug Life "The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everybody" is an vital
theme in the novel and the source of the book's title. Tupac's acronym clarifies the patterned nature

Starr and Khalil examine the acronym without further ado some time recently Khalil's passing, and
Starr examines Tupac's message with her father afterward on, coming to the conclusion that she

Life Through My Eyes is a poem written by Tupac Shakur. Tupac was born in East Harlem,
Manhattan New York and named Lesane Parish Crooks until he later adopted the stage name Tupac

very few friends which moved him to find other sources of entertainment such as writing poetry and

According to the American Psychoanalytic Association transference is "a concept that refers to our

among the black community, Tupac carried through with it in his adult life. If it weren't for his
mother and stepfather teaching him that he should be proud to be black because it is what makes
him who he is, then he probably wouldn't have grown up to fight so hard for equality among
everyone. I also think that growing up in the ghetto and knowing first hand what it was like to

Emotional Rhetorical In Dear Mama By Amaru Shakur
Tupac Amaru Shakur, a renown rapper, actor, a renown rapper, actor, and poet wrote the song "Dear
Mama", to show his mother that through it all, he appreciates everything that his mother has done
for him. The author also praises his mother in the qualities she had, while also praising all the
mothers who go through the same struggles that she did just to take care of their kids. This being
that Tupac and his sister were raised single–handedly for most of their lives by their mother Afeni
Shakur. In addition, at the time Tupac's mother had helped him not lose hope when he was convicted
of a false crime and sentenced to jail. In the song, the main message is a thank you to Tupac's
mother, along with appreciation to all mothers in general, and the three main strategies the author
uses to achieve this message is rhetorical questioning, repetition, and appeals to pathos through
emotional instances/examples. The first technique that Tupac uses to achieve his message is
rhetorical questioning. This can be observed through the lines, "And who'd think in elementary, hey,
I'd see the penitentiary one day?" In these lines, Tupac conveys the idea that although he got in
frequent trouble, his mother was still always there for him. This reflects on the current issue at the
time, that being Tupac's sentence in jail. In addition, the lines had a side meaning of showing the
struggles of dealing with a biased law, which at the time mostly applied to people in Tupac's
situation such as those with a low–income background and being a minority. However, this
technique mainly serves to strengthen the fact that Tupac loves and appreciated his mother, and
giving a general appreciation to any mother who goes through the dedication for their children. The
second technique used by Tupac in the song was repetition. This can be seen through the repeating
of the lines, "Lady, don't you know we love ya? (Dear Mama), Sweet lady, place no one above ya
(you are appreciated), Sweet lady, don't you know we love ya?" These three lines, composed by
Tupac, Reggie Green, & "Sweet Franklin", was repeated in between the verses of the song to help
convey the message that Tupac being appreciative of his mother. It can also be viewed as an

money, sex and alcohol. Because of his socially conscious lyrics, Tupac has been called one of the

  • 7. Analysis Of Tupac Shakur 's Song, Dear Mama The struggles of a single mother is not something everyone will fully understand. In the late 90's there was huge poverty and gang violence in Los Angeles, California where Tupac grew up. Many of his songs reflect on how his experience was in this environment. In Tupac Shakur's song, "Dear Mama" found in album, Me Against the World, for a single mother to show love for her child takes a huge struggle, especially when it was a time where gang violence was really high and fathers would leave their children. • 9. Tupac Meaning Interpretation of "Life Goes On" Tupac Shakur, in some people's opinion, was one of the greatest rappers that's ever lived. Over a decade ago Tupac wrote an inspirational song named, "Life goes on." "Life goes on," seems to be about the streets taking people's lives, and how even though you lose someone, you can't waste time mourning because that not what the victim would want you to do; the victim would want you to live your life because they are not coming back. The three stanzas in the song gives the audience the feeling that Tupac has lost friend through death, jail, and soon his time to die will come but he would not want any sad faces and tears, just happiness, because life goes on. In verse one, the speaker seems to be describing walking through the hallways of prison for bail. "Breath Stinking/ in my jaws," implies that the artist had just awaken, was rushed, and didn't have any time to brush his teeth because it was time for him to leave. After leaving the prison it seems as if he was surrounded by loud people he knows that's filled with excitement because of his release from prison. Compare and Contrast 2Pac & Saint John the Baptist Essay Compare and Contrast 2Pac & Saint John the Baptist Although they lived in very different times, Tupac Shakur and Saint John the Baptist had many commonalities. Both became extremely famous for expressing what they believed. The media's portrayal of Tupac Shakur as a tattooed thug has focused public attention on his accused crimes instead of his music. This rapper, raised in Marin City, California, by a Black Panther mother, is more complex than his enemies like to admit. Shakur (who performs as 2Pac) was a talented lyricist with a gift for storytelling and getting his point across to our youth. Pretty charitable for a guy who's been shot five times. "The bible tells us that all of 'em did this because they suffered.. So much that's what makes them special people. I beg to differ; it depends on the person of whom they are trying to inspire that is why I believe Tupac Shakur is an inspirational icon to underprivileged individuals. Tupac Shakur, through his music, poetry, and political views, inspires young disadvantaged people to recognize that there is life for them outside of the ghetto, poverty, drugs and other adversities. After all, how could the same artist–or, given the unwilling suspension of disbelief, the same man–encourage women to keep their heads up one moment and then quickly pelt them with harsh epithets"(15). Tupac has done a lot of mischief during his career that disqualifies him to be considered ideal for people to look up to. He states in his song "Hit 'Em Up", "Little Ceasar go ask you [your] homie how I'll leave you/ cut your young ass up see you in pieces now be deceased/ Little Kim, don't fuck around with real G's quick to snatch your ugly ass, off the streets/ so fuck peace" (Shakur, 1998).The lyrics in this song shows outrage and negativity of an artist who desires to put harm upon someone. No parents wants their daughters and sons looking up to a coward who is constantly in trouble with the law, gang banging, and a sexist. Most inspirational people live a life of decency, honor, glory, simplicity, and obscurity. Even though Tupac lyrics imply good qualities, his life style and negative actions are looked at with a side eye, when being considered inspirational. I see the toughness from the environment he grew up in that was filled with violence, guns, drugs, etc. Tupac lived off of the streets and grew up with little to no privileges. As a result, he had to look out for himself and the odds were stacked against him. "Me Against the World" exemplifies this struggle as he felt like it was just him against the world at times. The word "tenderness" also perfectly describes Tupac's music. The lyrics in this song sound heartfelt. He expresses how he feels about the world around him by talking about the issues people outside of the ghetto are unaware of, but people who live in the ghetto are used to seeing people get shot and the fear of being shot when he steps outside. As Quinn describes it, this song and album as a whole are different from his previous work because it focuses on his "individual paranoia." It does not seem like his lyrics are targeted at one specific audience. It sounds like he is talking to himself at some times and is retelling his experiences, venting his frustrations with the world, and the chorus is his way of accepting his situation and how the world is by saying, "It's just me against the world" and "I've got nothing to lose." My fighter, Tupac (2pac) Shakur, did die for something. He died for rapping against Racism. Tupac was the first to put thug life anywhere. Tupac was a fighter of the darkness due to his advocacy to black children's pain, popular songs that speak against racism, and being affected by racism. 2pac wrote many lyrics that went against racism, He started thug life by getting it tattooed on his chest. Many people don't know it is an acronym. It means "the hate U give little infants. Forget everybody," I changed a word in there because of colorful language. Some of his most popular songs are Changes, hit me up, and dear Mama. In changes he started talking about racism saying, "I got love for my brother / but we can never go nowhere / unless we share with each other / we gotta start makin' changes / learn to see me as a brother 'stead of two distant strangers." In the beginning he had a hard home life, with a single mother being the only one to raise him. He eventually was discovered as a rapper and then his life started becoming less of a money struggle and more of a power struggle. He fell in and out of love with multiple women and was not able to have the children he wanted. None of this could be proven though, there are also rumors saying that a Las Vegas police officer was paid millions of dollars to keep quiet, and another conspiracy is that he is alive and well and living in Mexico. According to research and factual evidence all those accusations are false, and Tupac is deceased. After Tupac's death his mother retreated to the family home in Stone mountain Georgia and had to go through a lot of paper work to establish herself as the administrator of all his belongings. Tupac did not leave many belongings, in fact he was technically still found in debt to Death Row Records who had scammed him out of his freedom when he signed that contract. (gill, mark ... • 59. Tupac Attachment Theory For this assignment I have chosen to write about Tupac Shakur. Tupac was a rapper who was born in the ghetto of East Harlem, New York to a mother who was part of the Black Panthers group. As a child he attended many Black Panther meetings and was heavily influenced by what the leaders had to say. Tupac didn't know his father and was raised by a man who was on the America's most wanted list. After Tupac moved to Oakland, California, he hit a breakthrough with his music and finally had a voice that would be heard. Tupac genuinely cared about others. He was constantly standing up for what he believed in. According to the American Psychoanalytic Association transference is "a concept that refers to our natural tendency to respond to certain situations in unique, predetermined ways––predetermined by much earlier, formative experiences usually within the context of the primary attachment relationship" (2018). I think that because he grew up with parents who fought hard for equality among the black community, Tupac carried through with it in his adult life. If it weren't for his mother and stepfather teaching him that he should be proud to be black because it is what makes him who he is, then he probably wouldn't have grown up to fight so hard for equality among everyone. I also think that growing up in the ghetto and knowing first hand what it was like to struggle made him into the man he was. He took his own personal experiences and used it to relate to his audience and discuss how to keep pushing through because it will get better. His relationship with his mother strongly influenced his personality and views as an adult. If it weren't for his mother taking care of him on her own because her husband was constantly on the run, I think that Tupac would have fallen into the trend of degrading women in his ... His music sums up Black oppression to being treated differently and problems that happened back then that are happening to this day. Tupac had a song called "Brenda's got a baby" where he was trying to make a political statement. In the song Tupac said that, number one, when this song came out, no male rappers at all anywhere were talking about the problems that females were having. Number two, it talked about sexual abuse, it talked about child molestation, it talked about families, it talked about families taking advantage of families, it talked about the effects of poverty it talked about how one person's problems ... The music is talking about violence, girls and mostly just saying the "n–word". When my friends asked why white people say the "n–word" I say blame the music because if you listen to your favorite musicians you will sing or rap their music and repeat what they say, which could include the "n–word" and listen to the song on repeat. One time I ask my "white friend" if he ever said the N–word in public, and he said "no". I asked "Do you ever say it alone in the car, while listening to your favorite artist?" he quietly said "yes". • 67. Emotional Rhetorical In Dear Mama By Amaru Shakur Tupac Amaru Shakur, a renown rapper, actor, a renown rapper, actor, and poet wrote the song "Dear Mama", to show his mother that through it all, he appreciates everything that his mother has done for him. The author also praises his mother in the qualities she had, while also praising all the mothers who go through the same struggles that she did just to take care of their kids. This being that Tupac and his sister were raised single–handedly for most of their lives by their mother Afeni Shakur. In addition, at the time Tupac's mother had helped him not lose hope when he was convicted of a false crime and sentenced to jail. In the song, the main message is a thank you to Tupac's mother, along with appreciation to all mothers in general, and the three main strategies the author uses to achieve this message is rhetorical questioning, repetition, and appeals to pathos through emotional instances/examples. The first technique that Tupac uses to achieve his message is rhetorical questioning. This can be observed through the lines, "And who'd think in elementary, hey, I'd see the penitentiary one day?" In these lines, Tupac conveys the idea that although he got in frequent trouble, his mother was still always there for him. This reflects on the current issue at the time, that being Tupac's sentence in jail. In addition, the lines had a side meaning of showing the struggles of dealing with a biased law, which at the time mostly applied to people in Tupac's situation such as those with a low–income background and being a minority. However, this technique mainly serves to strengthen the fact that Tupac loves and appreciated his mother, and giving a general appreciation to any mother who goes through the dedication for their children. The second technique used by Tupac in the song was repetition. This can be seen through the repeating of the lines, "Lady, don't you know we love ya? (Dear Mama), Sweet lady, place no one above ya (you are appreciated), Sweet lady, don't you know we love ya?" These three lines, composed by Tupac, Reggie Green, & "Sweet Franklin", was repeated in between the verses of the song to help convey the message that Tupac being appreciative of his mother. I went to see the movie about Tupac's life, "All Eyez on Me", with my friends, which intrigued me to look into him more as an artist and a person. What I found fascinating about Tupac's songs is that how he is taking a stand in social and cultural issues in his lyrics, in contrast to most rap songs nowadays that revolve around money, sex and alcohol. Because of his socially conscious lyrics, Tupac has been called one of the most influential rappers of all time. In class, we looked into different forms of dialects and slangs and discussed how they form one's identity, which I found very interesting. Tupac was a perfect example of this. Therefore, I wanted to create a column in the magazine Rolling Stone, where I discuss the imagery and language Tupac uses to illustrate the problems in the African–American communities of the United States.
