Purchase an Energy Star Model. Energy saving models can
save you hundreds of dollars over the life expectancy of the
appliance and can help reduce the temperature of your
house. You can find additional information at their page
about its partners and strategies. When buying a product,
search for the label.

Energy Saving Tips: General


Clean or replace the appliance filter. Clogged filters
impair performance of the unit and makes them
work more. This causes the need for more energy to
run the appliance and also it affects the life
expectancy of the product.

Energy Saving Tips: General


Maintaining the unit appliance helps to
maintain the unit’s effectiveness. This means
that they can work requiring the least amount
of energy input possible.



Periodically inspect the unit.



Replace or refill fluids, lubrication
alignment in order to increase useful life.
Energy Saving Tips: General

or


Periodically check the air vent and hoses for
clogging. Not only does this makes the
appliance run more effectively but it prevents
fire hazards.

Energy Saving Tips: General


Select the right size for the appliance.
Consider the required output that is needed
for the house. An appliance too big for
household necessities will result in a waste of
energy.

Energy Saving Tips: General


Using the maximum load capacity of an
appliance reduces the frequency in which an
appliance is used.

Energy Saving Tips: General


Some appliances such as ranges, ovens,
dryers and heaters can use natural gas. The
appliance might cost some more but natural
gas is less expensive than electricity and
heats faster and more efficiently.

Energy Saving Tips: General
Energy Saving Tips


Cook with small appliances for specialized
jobs if you have an electric range stove helps
save electricity.

Energy Saving Tips: Small Appliances


If you have an electric range or stove, using
the microwave shortens cooking time, which
saves energy.

Energy Saving Tips: Small Appliances


Run cold water for disposal. Not only does it
save heating energy but it solidifies grease,
which makes it easier to run through the
pipes.

Energy Saving Tips: Small Appliances
Energy Saving Tips


Older refrigerators and freezers use two to
three times more electricity than the ones
that are 10 years old or less.

Energy Saving Tips: Refrigerators


Do not set the temperature colder than
necessary. Optimal temperatures range
between 36 to 42 degrees Fahrenheit for
refrigerators and -5 to 6 degrees Fahrenheit
for freezers.

Energy Saving Tips: Refrigerators


Defrost regularly. Excessive frost can lead to the
unit working harder.



Check the seals in the door to prevent the heat to
enter the system and increase temperature. If the
seals are broken, replace or repair.

Energy Saving Tips: Refrigerators


Place the unit away from direct sunlight or other
heat sources.



Do not install the refrigerator near an oven,
radiator, or other heat source, nor in a location
where the temperature will fall below 55°F
(13°C).



Make your height measurement from the lowest
portion of your cupboard down to the floor.
Energy Saving Tips: Refrigerators


Increase proper ventilation on the back of the
refrigerator in order to improve the thermodynamic
refrigeration cycle.



To ensure proper ventilation for your refrigerator,
allow for 1/2" (1.25 CM) space on each side and at the
top. When installing your refrigerator next to a fixed
wall, leave 2" (5.08 CM) minimum on each side
(depending on your model) to allow for the door to
swing open.



If your refrigerator has an ice maker, allow extra space
at the back for the water line connections.
Energy Saving Tips: Refrigerators
Energy Saving Tips


Select the shortest cycle available that
effectively cleans your dishes. Shorter cycles
uses less hot water and electric energy.

Energy Saving Tips: Dishwashers


Skip rinsing the dishes before loading them in the
dishwasher. Rinsing dishes before loading them into
the dishwasher wastes water and energy. If you do
rinse, use cold water.

Energy Saving Tips: Dishwashers
Energy Saving Tips


Reduce the heat. Start in a higher heat
setting until liquid begins to boil. Then, lower
the temperature and simmer the food.



Use retained heat. Turning off the oven a few
minutes before and use retained heat to
finish cooking the food.



Check the oven temperature.
Energy Saving Tips: Ranges and Ovens


Do not peek in the oven to avoid dropping the
temperature inside.



Put a lid on the containers when cooking them to
maximize efficiency.

Energy Saving Tips: Ranges and Ovens


Check the seals in the door to prevent the
heat to escape out the system. If the seals are
broken, replace or repair.

Energy Saving Tips: Ranges and Ovens
Energy Saving Tips


If you have a washer that allows you to control the
water level, adjust the level according to laundry
size.



Wash laundry in warm or cold water. Rinse laundry
in cold water.

Energy Saving Tips: Washers and Dryers


Don’t dry clothes excessively. Drying laundry
excessively uses more energy than is needed,
and is hard on fabrics. If you purchase a dryer,
get one with an electronic sensor that shuts
off the dryer when clothes are dry.

Energy Saving Tips: Washers and Dryers


Place the washer close to the water heater.
Water loses heat as it flows through pipes.
When the washer is located near the water
heater, hot water doesn’t have to travel as far
to reach the washer, and less heat is lost.
Insulating the pipes between the water
heater and washer helps retain heat.

Energy Saving Tips: Washers and Dryers
Energy Saving Tips


Install a water softener. Prevent mineral deposits
from coating the elements of the water heater. Not
only does this saves energy and money but it
prolongs the water heater life.

Energy Saving Tips: Water Heater and Water Use


Use low-flow showerheads on all showers
and faucet aerators to reduce the hot water
use.

Energy Saving Tips: Water Heater and Water Use


Reduce deposits and build-ups. Drain water from
the bottom of the water heater once or twice a year
to reduce the mineral deposits and sediment buildup. This increases the efficiency of the heater and
avoids corrosion over time.

Energy Saving Tips: Water Heater and Water Use


Install a heat loop or in-line trap. If you add a new
water heater to your home, consider having a heat
loop or in-line trap installed. These mechanisms can
be inexpensive to install and keep hot water from
moving into the piping system when you are not
using hot water.

Energy Saving Tips: Water Heater and Water Use


Repair dripping faucets promptly. It may not look
like much but one drop a second can waste up to 48
gallons a week. If this water was heated it means
that the energy used to heat the water for your use
is being wasted.

Energy Saving Tips: Water Heater and Water Use


Set the water temperature to 120 degrees
Fahrenheit. This is the temperature required
for most of household needs for hot water.

Energy Saving Tips: Water Heater and Water Use


Install your heater close to the kitchen so it
does not loose heat as it flows through the
water pipes.



Insulate water pipes to help the water flow
around the house without loosing heat.

Energy Saving Tips: Water Heater and Water Use
Energy Saving Tips


Remove moisture with a dehumidifier in
warm, humid months. Less humidity helps
you feel colder. This way you can save money
by not spending electricity on an air
conditioner.



For colder months, using a humidifier to
increase humidity and helps you feel warmer.
This way you can save money by not
spending electricity on a heater.
Energy Saving Tips: Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers
Energy Saving Tips


Not every room needs the same amount of
general light.



Use natural lighting as much as possible.



Position the lights properly. Try to illuminate
the entire activity area without creating
distracting glares or shadows.
Energy Saving Tips: Lighting


Adjust the light level. Use the dimmer when
necessary to adjust the light settings. A
dimmed light consumes less energy.



Control outdoor lighting. To assure only duskto-dawn operation, control your fixtures with
a photocell or timer.



Turn off the lights each time they are not
needed.
Energy Saving Tips: Lighting


Consider LED lighting. Avoid low life
incandescent light bulbs that consumes high
power.



Use a single, high watt bulb rather than
several low watt bulbs on your light fixtures.



Select an energy-efficient central air
conditioner by looking at the SEER (seasonal
energy efficient ratio) rating. The higher the
rating, the more efficient the unit.

Energy Saving Tips: Central Air Conditioners


Keep the thermostat clear of heat.
Positioning heat producing devices could
cause misreading in the thermostat and could
cause excessive cooling and wasted energy.



Keep the air conditioning unit away of the sun
in order for it to work less and consume less
energy.
Energy Saving Tips: Central Air Conditioners


Replace coils. To maximize efficiency, change
the indoor/outdoor compressor coils.



Keep the condenser and filter clean. It is
recommended to clean the filter monthly and
replace it if needed. Keep the unit clean of
debris.

Energy Saving Tips: Central Air Conditioners


Plan the ventilation. Proper ventilation can
help condition the house quicker and more
effectively.

Energy Saving Tips: Central Air Conditioners


Increase the thermostat setting. When at
home, set it a few degrees higher and
increase the value even more (about 78-80
degrees Fahrenheit) when leaving. Cooling
your house costs less than keeping it cool all
the time.



Close blinds, shades and drapes on the sunny
side of the home to decrease sun exposure
and keep the house cooler.
Energy Saving Tips: Central Air Conditioners


If possible, delay chores that produce heat
and moisture until the cooler parts of the day.



Turn off electronics and lights that are not
needed since they generate unwanted heat
to the house.



Use a timer and set it to turn off the unit
when you leave home



Purchase a unit that with variable fan speeds.

Energy Saving Tips: Room Air Conditioners


Seal the air conditioning unit and the room
windows to decrease the rate of heat leaking
in.

Energy Saving Tips: Room Air Conditioners


Setting the thermostat at the coldest setting
does not cool the room faster.

Energy Saving Tips: Room Air Conditioners
Energy Saving Tips


Use fans with your air conditioner. They
reduce energy costs by circulating air and
allowing raising the thermostat temperature
setting and still being comfortable. Also, they
are cheaper than an air conditioning unit.

Energy Saving Tips: Fans


If a ceiling fan exists, use it to blow air down in hot
weather and use it to blow air up in colder weather
to distribute the heat evenly in the room. This is
done by changing the angle of the blade.

Energy Saving Tips: Fans


Use a whole-house fan. Find a high powered
fan and place is such a way that it circulates
air through the whole house. This option is
cheaper than having multiple fans on each
room.
