Surrealism was started in Dada art by Andre Breton, who wrote the Surrealism Manifesto in 1924. The manifesto proposed joining the conscious and unconscious realms of experience so that dreams and fantasies could be part of everyday life. Surrealism was influenced by psychological theories of the time and sought to merge dream and reality in response to World Wars I and II. Notable surrealist artists mentioned include Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Yves Tanguy, Max Ernst, Giorgio De Chirico, Rene Magritte, Kay Sage, and Meret Oppenheim.
