3. Welcome To My Gallery
Of War
• Through out centuries humans had the
desire for art and war. In my gallery
you will take a journey through time
and see how art influenced and took
part in creating protective gear for
warriors!
4. Iron Age, 150-50 BC
From the River Thames at Waterloo Bridge, London, England Iron Age, 150-50 BC
Horned helmet
In this peace clearly you can
see the workmanship and the
designs of an artist. Even
though it was stated that this
helmet was not for protection
it was a symbol of importance
and the best way an artist can
show this, was through the
detailed workmanship and
materials used.
Height: 24.200 cm
Circumference: 58.500 cm
Gift of the Port of London Authority
P&EE 1988 10-4 1
Room 50: Britain and Europe
5. • This peace displays the use of
geometric shapes and use of lines to
give this work a rich and powerful
appearance during iron age.
6. Roman, 1st century AD
Roman, 1st century AD
Bronze gladiator's helmet
This helmet was created for
the largest of the
gladiators. At the time
gladiators were
professional athletes. The
helmet is almost like a
sculpture, created to strike
fear in to others and to
protect the gladiator at the
same time.
Height: 46.000 cm
Purchased with the assistance of Miss H.R. Levy
GR 1946.5-14.1
Room 69: Greek and Roman life
7. • The gladiators had to have a
intimidating look. The artist who
created the helmet made sure to include
many geometric and color choices in
order to accomplish the frightening
strong look.
9. • This helmet is interesting due to it’s
many artistic features. One of the many
features is the use of animals on the
helmet as ornaments and to
incorporate them in to the overall
design.
10. 16th century AD
Iron helmet
From Japan
Muromachi period, early 16th century AD
Sujibachi-type
It is just amazing how
the Japanese created
the helmet for
protection and added
the symbols and even
a signature of a school
master. I am assuming
a military school.
Gift of Brigadier W. G. Lang-Anderson
Asia JA 1953.4-17.1
11. • The Japanese helmets had a style to
them that separate them from the rest.
Using lines to strengthen the top of the
helmet and adding ornaments with
insignias of schools or army regiments.
12. 17th century (helmet)
From Japan
17th century
Momoyama period, late 16th century (cuirass and sleeves;
Edo period, 17th century (helmet), 18th-19th century (remainder)
Set of armor
Another Japanese helmet this
one definitely was created to
impress the enemy and scare
them to surrender. The colors
and the insignia is very close
to the 16 Century helmet
from Japan. However with
this one they used more color
and balance. It is very
symmetrical as well to make
both sides look equally
magnificent.
Height: 1.250 m (as mounted)

Rooms 92-94: Japan
13. • This magnificent display of color and
shape on the samurai armor and helmet
shows the creative spirit of the Japanese
people and the artists who create them.
The symmetry throughout this peace
shows the attention to detail and the
society it was created by.
14. Early 20th century AD
Early 20th century AD
Wooden helmet mask
This was an interesting
helmet mask it was designed
for a female not male like all
the other peaces. It was not
used for protection from
harm but as a initiation in to
the society ritual. The girlish
shapes in this peace provide
some insights as to how
women were viewed in
africa among the tribes.
Mende people, Sierra Leone
15. • This peace was created with many
shapes and lines and for the most part it
looks symmetrical. The dark color
makes you wonder what is this mask
what is it used for. At fist glance you
may think it is for a soldier but the
truth is its for a woman during a ritual.
16. • The six peaces I have chosen to display in the gallery utilized many of the principles of
design, all seam to have a focal point. I think the art work on the helmets was meant to get
an advantage over the opponent in battle, the more lavish the designs the more powerful the
person wearing it appeared. The main reason I wanted to use the helmets was to show the
differences in helmets across centuries.
• Originally I was going to create a gallery with paintings and sculptures but when I came
upon the helmets I realized that this is art. If you reflect back to week 1 and the question what
is ART, you realize how much we have learned in this class in such a short time. Even though
we have learned many things I know for my self that I will never have an answer the the
question “what is art” nor do I want to define it. In my opinion Art should be what it is the
unknown something that will always surprise us and shock us, indulge us and make us cry.
Thats why let art be art and not a definition created by webster dictionary and let future
generations define art in their own ways.
