Missouri asked to enter the Union as a slave state.

4. James Tallmadge proposed a constitutional
amendment to ban slavery in Missouri.

5. The Southerner wouldn‘t agree to that
Senator Jesse Thomas introduced an
amendment to forbid slavery north of 36° 30’
– except in Missouri.

6. The Solution
1. Maine was carved from Massachusetts and
made into a free state. That kept the balance
of free and slave states.
2. Missouri was admitted as a slave state.
3. The Compromise restricted slavery to
territories south of the latitude 36°30‘ north.

9. James Monroe supported the Missouri
Compromise because he valued the integrity
of the Union and did not want it to come
apart.

10. The Missouri Compromise lasted for 34 years.
